what do people in your area call that portion of the Shire?
Riversbend or Riverside?
That is so cool! Why the goggles? Maybe I haven't been teaching my little Ricky good safety measures?
I was target shooting the other day with my 19 yr. old son and his friend, it was funny because I was freakin because I couldn't find my ear thingys. So they were making fun of me because I didn't want to shoot without the ear things. Well you could tell these 2 clowns never shot a real gun before, when it was their turn they started complaining like little sissies because there ears hurt, ooohh and they were ringing and it wouldn't stop. ::)

Mary can explain why (http://so.verycontrary.com/2006/04/03/i-need-this-like-i-need-a-hole-in-the-head--oh-wait.aspx) you should never shoot without eye protection.

"huh?"I'm lucky that my hearing wasn't damaged earlier in life, but all the shooting we did then was with .22 rifles. I still have exceptionally good hearing across all frequencies for my age (44), and I jealously guard that. I don't even mow without hearing protection, much less shoot.

I wish my husband would use ear protection, I really think he wants to go deaf so he doesn't have to hear me anymore. I've got a plan up my sleeve for him though, I have tons of blank papers to write him stuff I want to say. :D
You know I think when some people are young they take things like eyesight and hearing for granted and then regret it when it's too late.
I remember I posted awhile back about how shooting my gun was hurting my ears and a lot of you guys told me to get ear protection and I listened.
When I asked Rick if I needed it when I began shooting my .38 he said, no. ::)
Your .38 is even worse for your hearing than a semi-auto, because revolver has a gap between the cylinder and barrel. A lot of gas (and noise!) escapes through that gap. And if it's a typical .38 with a 2-3" barrel, it's much louder than an equivalent caliber in a semi-auto with a 4" barrel.
Well if folks don't want to wear hearing
protection, they can do what I do.

Forgive me. I hope no one gets in trouble for this, I was just practicing adding animations to video. I thought the video was cute, I didn't know it was a felony. I had some footage of William doing fun stuff - you know getting tied to a chair and escaping. It was cute! It wasn't meant to.. I mean no one should be put in prison for it... :-X
Anyway I made another animation, one for Mark's "Keene Eye On The News" TV segment, and I put it on a DVD. But there was a lot of room on the disc, so I also put the cute William getting tied up footage on the DVD. :duh:
Well, I put the DVD in a paper bag and wrote on the bag "Keene eye on the news". I didn't mean for Mark to get the William in bondage video, I was going to give it to Tom Sawyer. ... :'( ... BUT ... I LEFT the paper bag in the control room of Cheshire TV and WHEN I LOOKED FOR THE DISC -- IT WAS GONE! :faint:
Someone gets to see "William the Amazing Escape Artist" working on his routine. :)

I occasionally indulge myself in fantasies about sudden wealth, and what I'd do if a winning Powerball ticket fell into my lap. I always "do" the expected things, like pay off all debt, establish a fund for charities I favor, make sure my various "favorite people" were blessed with some financial security, etc., etc.
One of my frequent dream themes is establishing a freedom activism multimedia studio with lots of loaner equipment, and oodles of production stations for audio/video/stills/printing. Think of it as a lending library for equipment and production, sort of a liberty version of Ken Burns' studios (ironically located in Cheshire County).
Sometimes I go back and forth about buying a bunch of stuff, versus just giving the money to people who know better than I how to spend it effectively. I ponder gift certificates to various vendors, and the risk of those who would take advantage.
Every single time I come back to trusting someone who knows what he's doing, whether it's charity or paid work. I always come back to that hairy hillbilly on his hilltop.
If the numbers line up, Tom Sawyer is getting a very fun shopping trip. ;D

The wood is free, except the labor. Actually easier to mill the thicker timbers, 1/2 an inch off doesn't matter much when it's 3 1/2 inches thick. It looks cooler than the 1 1/2 inch store bought lumber and stacks to make a sturdy structure with no fasteners.
At one time I had a logger assess the timber I have and was shocked that a large pine tree would only net me about 30 bucks.

It works pretty well. Sometimes really big and knotty logs are too much for it... the cycle time is slower than a gas one. On the plus side, quieter, not breathing stinky exhaust and gas fumes, zero maintenance, less expensive.

Yeah, flywheels are very useful devices. Much of the horsepower rating on many types of equipment is not anything that's necessary for the actual operation, but just to prevent stalling when it's first loaded. A much-smaller engine with a large flywheel can accomplish the same tasks, with less fuel consumption, because the flywheel takes up the first surge of load.

Flywheels are great. Many of the old low-speed engines never made more than 1-3 HP, but they did work that would take a modern 18-20 horse engine. Like Joe said, most of that is wasted under no-load conditions.
I like this one. It's a pretty conventional hydraulic, except it takes advantage of the double action cylinder and splits both directions. No wasted strokes, and a fast cycle.

No kidding. It's hard for me to accept that Sarah isn't a kid anymore, and she's 23.
Last time they were together, Sarah was 16 and I think Kira was 15, and Dawn's daughters were about 12-14.
No I don't know any band camp references. She was at church camp.

I guess they didn't play that in your homeland of Baja Canada.
"Tackle the Kid with the Ball Tag" is not nearly as elegant as saying "Smear the Queer". I remembering when playing with the girls became a little extra fun... I guess around William's age.
The best games had an element of danger involved... they tried to ban us playing "Greek Dodge" because we would really wallop the other kids with the ball. Now-a-days they want little Johnny and Susie dressed like the Michelin Man just to walk outside. ;D

They didn't teach you the game because they were afraid of you. I mean who's gonna take on Paul Bunyan.
It's funny, but I don't think we really thought about it being "Kill the Homosexual". It was just what the game was called and it was fun to say.
When I was in junior high, they banned marbles, "because it's gambling." So we came up with a more wholesome game called, "throw rocks at each other." I think the content of that one is self-explanatory. It was much better than "gambling" for little bits of glass, I'm sure...

Because "queer" didn't always mean that. It just meant "different." It generally had negative connotations, and was often used in reference to sexual "deviation," but that use was by no means exclusive - someone could "queer the deal" in a business transaction by revealing information that would make the buyer less interested, for example. Getting into the '80's, it became more strongly an anti-gay epithet, but until gay rights supporters "took over" the word, it was still used for many purposes - after that happened, it became essentially a synonym for "not heterosexual."

William the Emu wrangler, followed him through the woods for over an hour and tried to bring him back home so we could get him back to his owners. We've learned that much like libertarians, Emu's are hard to tell what to do. William had to finally leave him and come home.
The Wild Mountain Emu is the travailing companion of Sasquatch and The Abominable Snowman.
I don't know why they call him abominable, he doesn't inspire moral revulsion in me.

Rail trivia for William: rail is sized in pounds per yard.
There are some light duty branch lines that might use 90 pound rail, but when I worked on a section gang in 1981-'82, all the main line was being upgraded from 127 pound, to 136, and soon after to 148.
Before continuous welded rail ("ribbon rail") became ubiquitous in the early-mid 1980s, all track was made from 13 yard long rails that were bolted together.
New creosote-soaked hardwood crossties are heavy mofos.
When the air temperature is already 110F and you're unloading new ties out of a gondola car, the creosote fumes turn you redder than your worst sunburn.

BTW, any spike marked "HC" (high carbon) make great knives. It takes considerable drawing out, but there is plenty of metal there. Just google "railroad spike knife" and you'll see dozens of pics and videos.

Spikes not marked HC may or may not have enough carbon to be hardenable, but they're still good for practice.
Yeah, we've watched a lot of Youtube videos... there is even a TV show called Forged in Fire, where three contestants compete to forge knives or swords.

I had the good fortune to grow up and spend the majority of my life within 40 miles of Old Washington, Arkansas, home of the American Bladesmithing Society's Jim Moran School of Bladesmithing (conducted through Texarkana College).
Dad subscribed to the Popular Science Book Club, so we got Alex Bealer's "The Art of Blacksmithing" when I was 12 or 13. My first forge was a hole in the ground, with an inflatable boat foot bellows attached. ;D I later upgraded to an old cast iron sink lined with concrete, air supplied via my big sister's cast-off hairdryer.
I was also a member of a local blacksmith's group, even though my main interest has always been bladesmithing. Being able to go to local hammer-ins, and even the ABS national hammer-in, gave me the chance to meet probably a dozen Master Bladesmiths, and many dozens of Journeymen who do Master-level work.
My anvil is sitting on the floor about 10 feet away. I

William was the hardest working man in show business at the gig in Baltimore. Hauling heavy gear, running cables and hustling from 6 am to midnight for 4 straight days.
I looked over from shooting and realized he was the person giving the presenters their 5 minute warning... I was laughing on the inside that he was now running the show. ;D
Lots of little adventures dealing with folks in the city. Cool old architecture, it used to be a really happening place back in the day. I hope that Baltimore can complete the turnaround that it seems to have happening.
He came home more of a man than when he left.

Well the boy young man William has achieved (yet another) milestone.
I'm posting this message from the computer he built.
He researched all the components, purchased them with money he earned (thanks to Lauren for the Bitcoin conversion to facilitate some of the purchases).
Installed/assembled the components. Dealt with a few minor issues that had to be researched and troubleshot.
The daunting task of figuring out how to get the OS downloaded on my Mac and burn a boot Flash drive. Only to have to troubleshoot many unknowns and between our two heads we finally realized the biggest issue was a graphics card driver issue.
Re-install an earlier, more trustworthy version of the OS, and entirely on his own he ventured into the unknown of going into the guts of the OS via terminal and manually installed a driver that works.
So William is now well on his path to understanding Ubuntu (Linux).
Very proud of his perseverance. Good man William!
And then, apparently, you took possession of all his hard work for your own purposes! A fine method of demonstrating to him how the state works! :P
;D  >:(
Dang... I'll come back after I recover from the direct hit.
As the father of the former President of the New Hampshire Underground...
I'm just lucky he gives me the gig of being his driver, security, PR man. ;D
Nice job William.

Yeah, when he came to me and said he wanted to build a computer, we had been considering going in together on a new iMac for him, it was almost like "Son why are you leaving the faith" ;D
We decided that Windows was definitely out, I told him I didn't want to have to become the Microsoft security expert. That OS scares the crap out of me. But, when he proposed Linux I thought that would be a good learning experience for him and it's basically the core of the Mac OS, and I wasn't afraid of the security aspect.
He is already learning things I don't know. He will be my go to tech guy soon enough. 8)
It was great to see the pride on his face when we overcame the considerable hurdles.
and the possibilities are endless with open source stuff. You can go in any direction and you don't hit as many artificial walls ... and if you do ... there are all these people trying to climb them tunnel under are knock them down. :)
He will start growing a beard and start talking like the Seth lord or our other buddies :)

Yes it's concrete, to make a flat surface for the coal to sit on around the fire pot. You rake the coal into the fire pot as needed. The thick steel of the brake drum should take the heat. Concrete wouldn't stand up to the heat of direct contact. The concrete is only touching the fire pot along the outer edge of the brake drum.
William worked on a railroad spike from the fire in the aluminum furnace we made, But it was a small hot spot and he couldn't heat up very much of the steel at one time. He made a small blade shaped thing.
Not sure what we will make. a knife probably. It's just cool to be able to get the metal glowing hot and shape it... with lots of sparks and such.
The coolest looking stuff is the pattern welded or as many call it the damascus steel.

Welding temps are much lower than with ferrous metals, plus there's the difference in how non-ferrous metals anneal, compared to ferrous.
To anneal ferrous metals, you heat above the first critical temperature and then cool very slowly. To anneal non-ferrous metals like copper, brass, silver, etc., you heat above the critical temperature and then quench in water for rapid cooling.

People who reload rifle brass know to anneal the necks after every 2-3 loads. Just set the brass on a board over a bucket of water, use a torch to heat the neck, then dump it in the water.

I've used everything from 12V blowers to furnace blowers to hair dryers to the outlet of vacuum cleaners. And then I did finally acquire a proper hand-cranked blower, but sold it when we moved here. The first forge I ever made (when I was 11) was a hole in the ground with the inflatable raft foot pump as a bellows.
While you can buy nut-sized coal for home heating, it doesn't have the specs you want for blacksmithing. It wouldn't hurt for him to learn to make his own charcoal, either (the main difference in the two fuels is that coal will go out without an air supply, but charcoal keeps burning).

Yeah, we are going to seek out some different coal. We had a bucket left from the furnace project that one of the Free Stater families gave us. Lauren made charcoal, and William and I are talking about that as well.
Cool that you had blacksmithing as a hobby. That looks like a good website, but so far we are getting by on the cheap. Everything except the pipe and fittings has been free. We saw a simple forge setup they wanted 1200 bucks for.
Kind of fun to figure some of these things out by just trying it. Instead.of "painting but numbers" and following someone else's plan.
It's good just to see him trying something new. With each of these things, I notice a change, a step forward in him becoming a man. It is something in the set of his shoulders, his confidence. Ever since he was just a little guy pretending to be a man, copying my mannerisms (heaven help him).

It depends on how much mass is hot and how the heat gets wicked away by the anvil, hammer etc. About two minutes it's lost the bright color. But, even when it is dark red you can move it. It just gets stiffer. The difficult part is to not over heat the thinner edge because it will actually burn like a sparkler.
Yes, he is trying to shape a knife. Mostly he is just learning the techniques. I am trying to not give too much input and allow him to make mistakes and figure it out.
We are making the progress of building the tooling and having fun along the way. It's still pretty neat just making steel move. We poked a clear glass bottle into the center of the super hot coals as a viewing port... Super bright heat, then the bottle melted away. Lol

I had my head down looking in the viewfinder and felt a heat on my skin... it was a fire breather 75 feet away blowing huge fire balls into the air.
William's first time as "Technical Director"... operating the switcher. Worked out pretty well considering it was the first attempt of this crew working together. The switching started off a little slow because they were using the same computer to run some of the lighting and they were having an issue with that software. But, once he had uninterrupted use, he did a pretty damn good job.

That Douglas Fir does have a nice looking grain. It's heavy as heck as well, doesn't move around when he's planing and such. I'm really proud of him... he bought the materials and learned a lot in the process... the end result, he has a bench that will last a couple of lifetimes.
Youtube sure is a good resource. He knows more about some of the woodworking techniques than I ever knew.

Quote from: Tom Sawyer on December 30, 2018, 09:16 AM NHFT
Youtube sure is a good resource. He knows more about some of the woodworking techniques than I ever knew.
YouTube has devalued the stature of being "the smart guy". I used to be "the smart guy" or the "go-to" guy. If a bunch of us had a problem surface that none of us knew well enough to handle expertly, we'd inventory our applicable experience and knowledge and the one with the most - most often, me - would become the point person and begin to steer the ship. But now, they don't need me. They can ask google or watch YouTube.
A lot of technical repair charges, like a lot of automotive repairs, are for work that is really rudimentary, and so the do-it-yourselfers do save their employers a lot of $200 service calls that we used to make just because we knew the reset regimen, the master password, and the location of the hidden fuses and circuit breakers, and only we could procure the proprietary parts. Now, our monopoly on that knowledge is broken.
Unfortunately for me, when I am called to repair complex electronic systems that commonly fail, if I give the customer bad news - which is to say, there will not be a cheap solution - they can say, "Oh yeah? Well I googled and there are all these other people who know just as much as you and they say we should do this and that", and with YouTube, they can actually see someone just like them do this and that, and when that happens, I am out the door.
it happens
A mechanic buddy of mine, was saying that often the YouTube guy glosses over the difficulty or the potential things that are likely to go wrong with the repair.
What you say reminds me of video work, in that anyone can own a camera these days. I have had potential clients say, "My brother has a camera, I'll get him to do it." I tell them, "It takes more than a camera to produce a TV show or a movie. Look at all the names in the credits. I pride myself on my ability to wear those different hats and create a video project with a professional look on a shoe string budget."
With clients that are inexperienced it is difficult. I have had to let them find out the hard way these things.
Sometimes I lament for the days when even photography was a magical thing. We have billions of photos taken now... Kind of has diluted the value. Many people think the tool does the work, it's just a tool. The difference is the mind of the person using the tool.

I pride myself on my ability to wear those different hats and create a video project with a professional look on a shoe string budget."
My father was a professional photographer, running a portrait and wedding studio on the side of his his main job, which was all three shifts, six days a week.
In the days of Polaroids and 110 Instamatics, he was frequently asked to "just come over and take a few snapshots", because "your camera takes better pictures".
His camera was a Hasselblad 500c, and he spent decades perfecting his craft.
The musical version of that is, "We'll let you play here for free, so that you can get exposure."
Back in the 1950s, an uncle of mine had an 8 millimeter Bell and Howell camera, and that made him our family "movie guy". A lot of families had one. At our annual family gatherings, we'd eventually get to the point where he'd show us the film of his most recent vacation. Basically, those were about as creative as slide shows. When he went to New York City we'd see the film of them standing in front of the Empire State Building. Then the the camera would scroll up and back down, and then there would be a brief stutter, after which the same group of people would be in the same places, except that my uncle was now in the picture and we'd get to figure out who was now missing, and holding the camera. I'm pretty sure I saw someone on the Ed Sullivan Show do a comedy routing like that, but we did it first.
I have a Bell and Howell 8mm wind up camera. It used 16 mm film that you had to flip over and after they developed it they rip cut it down the middle.
My brother and I made Horror Movies when we were kids. Lost them when my parents split up. Boy I would love to have those films.
isn't the "Kid" already horrified enough with present day you?

William is restoring this saw I bought at a consignment shop for $2.

How do you plug it in ?
Okay, so you don't plug a hand saw in. To recondition it, you sharpen it and oil it ?

He took it apart, polished the brass hardware... Cleaned and refinished the handle. Apparently the little logo/badge is worth 12 bucks alone.
He didn't even have to sharpen the teeth. He says that this is a pretty desirable saw. I chose it because it was different than the others and it was still sharp.
He is up on such things. I wish I had bought all of the saws they had at 2 dollars each. I bet they thought people would buy them to hang on the wall as decoration.
I have one of those two man cross cut saws with the long handles on either end. It's the kind you see on tavern walls where they serve expensive micro brews etc. Saw a similar one on e-bay for $59.
It's the kind of thing you can't throw away, so it sits in the shed waiting for the apocalypse to become important again.

Funny you should say that, because no one is as young as they used to be... I mean it stand to reason! ;D
But, I must say that is a pretty dang awesome beard!
I just know I could grow a manly beard, but I'm not allowed to.
She won't let me. :icon_cat: :glasses1: :whip2:
Jim fixed up a nice 1 or 2 person saw that we used a bunch in Grafton. It must still be there somewhere. I got that for $2 too.
We also bought a new 2 person saw that John and I loved to use for the final cut on a tree so we could hear the wind blowing and whatever sound the tree was making. And when you run away you don't have a running chain saw your hands. :)
Jim gave William this lathe for his birthday. He recently bought some nifty antique turning tools for it. This is his first turning with it.
Thanks Jim. I especially like the mount and everything you built for it. He was able to take it outside to make the mess.

William and I designed, built, delivered, and assembled the shelf storage for a Free Stater's garage.
He did the majority of the fabrication. Turned out well and the client is super pleased. :glasses1: ;)

Yeah, he is old school... antique chisels and planes. He is reinvesting his earnings in tools and has really organized tools kits for our projects. I am now asking him his opinion and knowledge on some of these subjects. Youtube has been a valuable resource.
His youthful enthusiasm combined with my old dude wisdom lol.

Supposed to be stronger than wood.
Much quicker turn around on the growth compared to trees too.
Plus birds love the hemp seeds. Pot in every chicken is my apropos political slogan of the day!

That's the traditional finish for Lee-Enfield rifles, which many call a "BLO-job". The trick is rubbing your wood with oil until it gets hot. ;D
Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, once a year forever.

I friend who was big into sailing had the same saying.
I almost made a "this is my rifle, this is my gun" joke, but I couldn't come up with it.
Should I ask my doctor if "linseed oil might be right for me" ?

Speaking of Lee-Enfield rifles...
I was in Navy Junior ROTC in High School. We used to be able to use the indoor .22 rifle range at the National Guard Armory... Until this dumb ass kid brought in his .303 and shot a hole through the backstop. ;D
William made this box as a gift.
Ash he milled himself from a tree on our property. Sapele Mahogany and Rosewood from an exotic wood place.

Cool technique. Pretty difficult to do that, especially at that time. German TV had some great live music shows. Beat Club is a good one because at that same time frame US TV was doing lip sync performances.
Have a strong connection to that song. I have a vivid memory of driving down the road in NC in 78 listening to that song. A sort of wistful melancholy,,,
I could see that song being that for many people
