Added a tag feature to try out.  Maybe it'll help people manage info so you can read just what topics interest you.

If you put in a list of tags, I think you need to list them without spaces, just commas between:

curmudgeon,Lloyd,funny

It complained about a tag being longer than thirty characters when I tried to add multiple tags with the comma. No individual tag was over thirty characters, so I think it measured it as a whole.

Should we use title case or only capitalize proper nouns? I see you're using title case, but this ends up with inconsistencies because people can never agree on whether or not prepositions, the, and so on, ought to be capitalized.

And, is singular or plural preferred?

I see that this tagging system fortunately isn't makingusrunwordstogether like some blogs' tag systems do. ;D

Singular or plural? I vote for plural.
And present tense on the verbs.

Makes the forum seem fresh and full of things you are looking for.  Like a well-stocked produce market

Looks like capitalization doesn't matter
Title: Re: Tags
Post by: J’raxis 270145 on November 13, 2007, 12:31 PM NHFT
Seems to be some problems with deleting tags. There are two tags currently still listed that are linked to no articles: "Test" and "Masterdebaters, Unite!". I tried adding "Test" to a random article, then deleting it, but it still won't go away in the tag cloud.
Title: Re: Tags
Post by: Kat Kanning on November 13, 2007, 12:31 PM NHFT
I think they'll eventually drop off the list.
Title: Re: Tags
Post by: J’raxis 270145 on November 13, 2007, 12:39 PM NHFT
Mousing over "Test", it claims "2 things" are in the tag. Then clicking the tag brings up nothing.

When I press tags nothing happens. :-\

I hate seeing how many times I've been smited, it hurts my feelings and makes me wonder what I said wrong.  Is there anyway I can go into my profile to ignore karma?

Look at all my "smites" ... you have more positive points than I got in 2 years

Damn Russell you have been smited a lot, never ever by me though! ;D  I think I smited one person or was going to and just couldn't do it, it was that Matchfork guy, I know I put him on ignore.

What's wrong with Candy Mountain?  Doesn't it take anybody to the magical place it takes me to?

I'll sit here and listen to it, the kids come running in, (well 2 of them), and we just laugh.  I have wondered though if it has some kind of mind control component to it because ever since I started listening to it, I've wanted to run away from home. :-\

Questions on the tags:

What happens when I click on an existing tab (is that like voting for it)?

What happens when I click on the red 'X' (is that voting against it or approving it)?

Title: Re: Tags

When you click on a tag, you should get a list of posts on that topic.  When you click the [X], it's deleting the tag from the post for everyone.

I've been trying to add useful tags myself, so I hope it doesn't go this way. If possible, lock it such that you can only delete tags you added?
Title: Re: Tags
Post by: Kat Kanning on November 14, 2007, 08:23 PM NHFT
Unfortunately, it's not particularly configurable - the only option is to let people manipulate the tags or not.
Title: Re: Tags
Post by: Kat Kanning on November 16, 2007, 08:01 AM NHFT
Judging by the number of tags being put on posts, I'd say the tags were a hit, despite being so buggy.
Title: Re: Tags
Post by: J’raxis 270145 on November 16, 2007, 09:35 AM NHFT
Tags are good. I'm sure the coders will work out the bugs it eventually.

Can you point me to where you got the code/module/whatever it is? I assume it's just PHP+MySQL like the rest of SMF, no? I might be able to take a look at it at some point (i.e., when the projects I'm working on now are done).

Do not put spaces between tags when entering them with commas when creating a new topic, as the spaces are not stripped, and the system treats "word" and " word" as two different tags.
