I'm a young person, and I have concentration issues. I used to be on RX meds for ADD in HS, but no longer take them as of several years ago due to cost and the fact that I'd rather not be amped up on artificial chemicals if I can avoid it. Long story short, I'm much better at dealing with distractions than I used to be, but it's still very hard to focus on tasks I don't like for more than a few minutes at a time. A friend of mine is now selling a product called Brite Life (http://www.britecash.com/), but it seems a bit hypetastic to me. Does anyone know of any reliable sources of information on such things? I'd rather use natural remedies and therapeutic practices than RX drugs if at all possible.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
I don't know if this would be helpful...

Caffeine. ;)
Homeopathic remedies for memory improvement/clarity include Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng ( Asian, American & Siberian) & Rosemary.
Might I suggest you take an in depth evaluation of your lifestyle to see if modifications could be made there first. Proper rest, nutrition and mindset will dramatically improve any homeopathic remedies effectiveness as well, IME. Perhaps a detox would be beneficial as well.
If you are seriously considering going the homeopathic route I strongly advise you to visit a homeopathic physician. There are likely to be many unique individual variables related to your body chemistry that may have a serious bearing on ones ability to effectively & safely self-medicate.
Green Tea has been reported to assist as well and can be used fairly safely ( if one has any modicum of "common sense") without needing to see a professional.
Hope that helps. 8)
Last year, I ran across a whole food product that makes all the difference in the world for me. Whenever I include this product in my diet consistently, not only does it heighten my ability to concentrate, but it keeps my mood evenly elevated (normally, I experience low-level depression), and gives me sustained energy without any stimulants.

You might try getting involved in some form of martial art that teaches meditation techniques. I would look at the Japanese martial arts. They may not be the most practical/realistic when it comes to fighting but you can definitely learn to slow down and step outside your own body a bit.
I had ADD when I was a kid. I did the Ritalin thing and all that. It sucked. I got involved in martial arts and that helped quite a bit.

Excellent suggestion. Also consider the Chinese "internal" arts; Chi-Kung & Tai Chi Chaun.

I'll look into that. High doses of caffeine used to work but now I'm immune :\ For better or worse, my body chemistry is such that I can become highly tolerant of various chemicals. For example, I take melatonin as a sleep aid (I have moderate insomnia). When I first started taking it, 1mg worked. Now I take 6mg.

There is a mnemonic device for the physiological effects of datura/atropine intoxication: "blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as hell, dry as a bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone." Another rhyme describing its effects is, "Can't see, can't spit, can't pee, can't shit." Regarding Datura, among the Navajo is the folk admonition, 'Eat a little, and go to sleep. Eat some more, and have a dream. Eat some more, and don't wake up.'

I've been told that there are 2 types of "ADD". One is with hyperactivity and the other is without. A neurologist told me years ago that caffeine works good for people who have "ADD without hyperactivity". I saw a news piece a while back where a Dr. in CA suggested that people with "ADHD" would benefit from eating a small amount of marijuana as it would calm them down and help them to focus.
What's concentation? :P

A good colon cleanse purifies the blood. Our brain function ons glucose. Clean blood is like clean gasoline. Your brain will work more efficiently with fresh and clean, fully oxygenated blood.
and this relates back to my coffee enema philosophy and the Gerson diet.
It is said that many diseases originate in the colon. ie "Leaky Gut Syndrome" is nothing more than rotten fecal matter eating away at intestional tissues. Then fecal matter is asborbed by the body and circulated systemically. Instead of absorbing nutrients the body is now absorbing good old american shit. Talk about "toxic conditions?"
I also liked Rangers proposal of practicing martial arts and involving the mind, body and spirit. There is much be gained from yoga, Tai Chee, meditation, etc.
again, there are no magic bullets in alternative healing. We have been conditioned by the pharm boys that we can take a pill or potion and expect instant results AND continue with our nasty habits. So the guy eat cheesefries all, a 12 pak of diet coke and twinkies will not really benefit from chugging down some ginko biloba and ginger root.

Do you have any sources for your claims? This was on Penn and Teller's Bullshit and they made the interesting and more believable hypothesis that any shit that came out from the cleaning would simply be defecated at a later point.
yeah, I guess you believe penn and teller are xperts?
What i am discussing is just basic anatomy and physiology. When the corporate gov and pharm industry control traditional western modern medicine, do you really expect to see peer review medical studies on alternative health? Eastern medicine, Indian medicine and NA Indian medicine all recognize the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and bowel function as vital components in the elimination of waste.

St Johns Wort. 750mg before bed every night. Skin turns white, a bit sleepy after taking it, that's the only side effect.

:biglaugh: I love it, your so right! In my kid's old school in Maryland they eliminated recess around 5th grade, the kids had to earn at the most 2 periods of recess a week via good behavior. I'm so glad I pulled them out. I remember having recess/outside time in 10th grade in Connecticut.

No, but theirs is a much, much more evolutionarily acceptable hypothesis. Why on earth would a creature evolve that absorbed toxins from its own shit?
Then again, I don't know. That's the whole point of science - to figure out what's true.

Yes, definitely. And I'd expect that the more reliable and scientific the study was, the less of an effect the alternative methods would have, until the best studies showed no effect.

Do you know and understand what happens to the digestive tract when things become abnormal?
Do you really want to put your faith in two comedians? ..if so this is the problem in this country. People see it on TV and believe it. Powerful brainwasher that boob tube is.

mble digit: Then again, I don't know. That's the whole point of science - to figure out what's true.
Yes, REAL science and not psuedo-science which there is quite a bit of the latter floating around with big pharm and their corporate powers, lobbying powers and their ability to do their own research. It seems to be pretty hard to get the real truth from anyone. Google " medical research, conflicts of interest".

digitmble: It sounds like you're arguing that common sense trumps science.
umm...Anatomy and physiology IS science. OTOH, if something works I could give a rats ass if science proves it or not. ie : gravity existed before it was "proven" or explained...the sun existed and made all life possible but we didn't need scientists to explain us the details and prove it existed.

Why would a pharm company want to do a study on food? Whats to gain? As far as your statement regarding alternative methods, it appears you are just stating your opinion... AND, the first lesson in REAL research is to have the individuals unbiased. You bad. lol.

mobile digit But what does science say?
Science says a lot about these organs being vital elimination organs.,, and science says alot about what happens when we do not eliminate. The science says we die. Its called bowel obstruction, blood septis..which means we poison our blood with our own waste. I am sure you know that because the experts Penn and Teller probally explained all this...oh no wait they were just there to make some shits and giggles for sheeple but their agenda was to attack alternative heathcare.
mobiledigit:Just because people used to believe that the world was flat does not mean that it was, just as people believing that this alternative medicine works does not make it so.
I agree. Your point? ..but I would like to add that the power of the mind (and believing) in a very important
aspect in good health and happiness. I wish there was more Western medicine" research into this realm. This is where easterm medicine rocks. (yoga, Tai Chei, Kung fu etc)
Imobiledigit if it does work though, I am all for integrating it into other scientific medical techniques.
If it works who cares? If I have a machine with blinking lights and spinning gizmos and it cures 500 people with terminal cancer would you come for treatment if you had cancer? or would you wait until the science was proven? I am a truthseeker and I would love to see real unbiases science. But it is a shame it is very very difficult to find any truth encompassing almost any topic. Money runs the show. People sell their souls when money is waved in their greedy drooling little faces. As long as people stay sick and alive, pharm companies and all the conventional doctoids will continue to reap profits. A dead patient and a healthy patient makes them no money, Just keep them sick and pretend you are lookinf for "cures"...yeah, yeah thats the ticket. cha ching.
The cool thing is...no matter what...the truth always reveals itself.
