Title: Those damn daddy long leg spiders are back!
Post by: Raineyrocks on August 09, 2008, 01:45 PM NHFT
I don't know if any of you remember when I posted about them being all over the doors and in the house last year but here I go again!  So far Rick and Jon have carried out over 11 of them in 2 weeks! :o

I was just going pee and I saw one on the wall!  I always check the toilet, seat, and lid before I sit down because of them and plus those stories I've read of snakes in people's toilets.   :o

I'm going to freak out if one of them puts a long leg on me to climb on me, I'm so scared right now! :help:

11 in 2 weeks! That's less than 1 a day! At those dams I worked in up there we had to carry a stick to clear the webs out as we went - every day!

Bring them to me, although I prefer to eat them live! :tiphat:

Eeeww!  I'm not traveling in a car with them! :o  At least I hope they didn't make it into my van yet.

On a serious note, I was at the produce place today and as I was picking out some peaches this big daddy long leg came crawling up but he/she had a different color face, I guess that's what their round part is called.  It was black with white stripes on it, are some of these poisonious?   I never saw one that looked like that yet.

I have never heard of anyone being bitten or poisoned by one.  They are harmless.  I like them, (not to eat though) because they don't look quite like normal bugs.  They have that neat little pod shaped body.  I believe they eat insects, so you want them in/near any gardens you have.

If it makes you feel any better, Mythbusters busted the myth that they're extremely poisonous. Thy myth seems to come from the fact that they're just not very aggressive at all and are very unlikely to bite you so it's easy to scare people who don't know of anyone who was ever actually bitten by one to be able to know what would happen. They went to a great deal of effort using LOTS of them to get some bites and the bites were extremely minor; hardly even comparable to a mosquito bite if I recall.

That's why I need all the long leg spiders I can get my mouth on! There are just not enough of them in Grafton.

The doors and windows are covered!  :o  3 of them dropped down on my daughter's foot today, yuk!  We don't kill them though but I don't like them.  One was climbing up the dining room wall a few minutes ago towards my favorite spider and his/her web, do they eat spiders?  My son put it outside.  I don't want them to kill my little spiders that have webs in the corners because they have tons of gnats and stuff in their webs.

See as long as spiders stay away from me I like them but not when they are plastered all over the doors that I need to use and try to drop down on my body.

Thanks Dalebert, it makes me feel a little better! :)   Eeew. so they do bite, yuk!  I hate mosquito bites too but in my mind I picture daddy long legs to have gigantic fangs, it's just a mental imagery problem I have.  I have the same images with wasps, bees, ect. :o

Last night my daughter and I fell asleep on the couch and in the middle of the night she got up and screamed.  A daddy long leg spider ran across her face, for real!  We found him crawling up the wall after she quick got up, then she said to me, "Eeeew mom, you sleep with your mouth open."   Yuk, I hope it wasn't crawling on me! :o

Don't worry too much. Those spiders are tiny, can you imagine how long it will take one of them to eat you from the inside? A looong ass time! Besides, it doesn't hurt that much except for when it starts eating your brain but you've got a few years to live before they make it all the way up there.

Although sleeping with your mouth closed won't help because they can just get in through your nose. They are like cats when it comes to squeezing through small spaces. Their legs are actually telescoping and they can retract them when they need to get in somewhere. Human anatomy is required course in daddy long leg spider school so they are pretty knowledgeable about all of our entry points.  :P

Hehe.  ;)

Lauren and I where cutting firewood over at Whip's place.  Lauren comes up to me with her hands together, in a sideways praying position.  She motions for me to look at her hands.  I thought she had a big frog, she likes to show me the big animals she finds.  She opened her hands... she had a spider as big as the palm of her hand, not a daddy-long-legs, it looked like a mouse with eight legs.

She let it go and the spider sat on a log near where I was working for two days.  I says, "Go head and look, I'm the one with the chain saw, steel towed boots and a helmet."

Oh my gosh Lex!  I wouldn't want you around me as paranoid as I am in an emergency! ;D   Oh crap, aren't you an EMT anyways?  I forgot if you were or not when I was writing with you last year about my son joining the firehouse as a volunteer.

On a serious note, does this mean that daddy long legs can get in windows even if they are closed?  I mean just the seam of a window because I've seen them just sitting there on the sides of windows and it looks like they are trying to get in that way.

Holy Shit!  I was just sitting here at my desk, minding my own friggin' business and my daughter comes into the room and says, "Mom, don't move!"    So I asked why and all she said, "Daddy long leg!"  So I looked down and the damn spider was coming toward my legs, I screamed and threw my chair across the room so I could quickly get the heck out of there and the spider started coming toward me quicker!   Yes, that's right the spider was aggresively trying to get to me!  Why?  Is this normal?

I can't believe this, they are back already!  I thought they came out in August/September!  I am so freaked out right now and there is a reason I quoted this post, wait until you read why!

So I wake up and I'm not expecting them to be out so I didn't check the toilet seat.  I also kind of got over the snake thing so I just sat on the toilet without a care in the world except for the fact that I got up real late and felt like a loser.    Well, I got up from the toilet seat and turned around to flush the toilet and at a quick glance I saw this long black thing that looked like a mutated pubic hair.  I said to myself, this can't be mine, it's long and the wrong color so I took a second look.   Yup, attached to this long black thing are two other black things and a head, a damn flattened daddy long leg!

He/she must have been under the rim and it must have looked like a big tornado cloud about to come down on it so I guess it tried to make it's way out of the toilet, well too late the funnel cloud called my fat ass sat on it without even knowing.  :o I'm am so extra, extra paranoid right now, I mean where the hell am I going to be safe?

Now for the questions:

1.  Is it normal for them to hang out in toilets?
2.  Are they suppose to be out this early?
3.  How do I exterminate them completely so I don't have to worry about any crawling out of toilets, dropping down on head from door frames, ect. ?

Apologize for necro-ing, but this issue was resurrected for me recently.  I heard again about the myth that daddy longlegs are extremely poisonous.  Actually the correct word is venemous.  "Poisonous" technically means touching can cause a reaction like poisonous tree frogs, but she used that word.

When I told her about the Mythbusters episode, she held firm and said they can bite you but the venom can't penetrate your skin deeply enough which is the only reason you don't die instantly!  I promised her I would look it up and I did.

http://www.nanowrimo.org/ (http://www.nanowrimo.org/)

So there is NO evidence EVER to support this made-up myth.  No one's ever suffered a bite with any consequences beyond a very tiny almost unnoticeable bump and no one's ever extracted their venom and injected it into so much as a mouse, much less a person, to see what might happen.  You can just as easily say that a lady bug is venomous and it would make as much sense as this myth.  In fact, a brown recluse has fangs just like a daddy longlegs spider and CAN inflict its venom upon people with very unpleasant consequences, so that actually makes this totally arbitrary myth not only completely without evidence but extremely unlikely.

That said, I'm very tempted to make some kind of movie where this myth is fictionally true and exploited for dramatic possibilities.   >:D

They are not even poisonous!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones#Misconception (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones#Misconception)

btw, I think they are cute, them and lady bugs are the only insects I have intentionally picked up with my hands.  I think bees are cute too, but I wouldn't intentionally try to pick one up, if they sting me they will die.  Twice, I have had bees land on my arm and set there for a minute, then fly off.  One of those times I slowly brought my arm close to my face and was able to watch it clean itself in great detail.  That was a neat experience.   :D
