LightScribe drives are überkool. I just installed one in my old B&W Mac, and I was amazed at how fast it is.

I bought a 20x HP dvd1040i for $47 at Wal-Mart as an impulse buy; probably could have gotten it for $10-12 cheaper if I'd shopped online. I think it's a rebranded LiteOn, so I might have gotten it cheaper than that. But, I had an .iso I needed to burn that required dual layer media, and my Panasonic 107 wouldn't cut it.

Since I bought the drive on impulse, I stopped in at (*gag*) BestBuy and bought a 5-pack of dual layer LightScribe media, and a 50-spindle of single layer LightScribe media. I won't admit what I paid, even with the spindle on sale.

And as it turns out, I could have just waited. The computer I was going to install that .iso on was dead, an apparent motherboard failure from our last power outage. Wish my daughter had mentioned it in passing. There are only a handful of replacement Socket 478 ATX mobos out there, and none of them are on sale. Lots of microATX, though. I'll be money ahead to just buy a 1-2 year old used system for less than the price of fixing this one.  :-\

I've never built a homebrew system, but my DIY gene is starting to stir. Russell's $200 price point is iffy for something brand new, but a $250 ITX system is very doable.

Oh, lord. I'm starting to sound like a geek.
