Title: Write In "Poll" What is your favorite "Restaurant/Food" in New Hampshire?
Post by: Peacemaker on December 09, 2008, 11:03 PM NHFT
What is your favorite "Restaurant" (any Place you buy prepared food/eat in or out) in New Hampshire?  Also please mention your favorite food (s) from the respective place.

I had a nice Steak at The Common Man Restaurant located in Merrimack.  I liked the floor plan too, similar to an old house, lots of small rooms spread out downstairs and then a big open bar upstairs.  I guess the word Memorable would be a better fit in this case as I've only eaten there once.

I understand the owner is Pro Liberty and I know he has a few Common Man Restaurants in the New England area.

In Keene, I would have say my favorite was the large Pizza Slices you can get at the "place" on the main drag there..can't remember the name, but you can't miss it (same side as RailRoad Square).  Good Pizza and cheap too.

In Dover, it's Pizza again for me at the same location of the Dover Meet up (Seacoast)   La Festa Wood Fired Pizza.  Best Pizza I've had in NH so far (Large Pepp. slice for $2.40).

In Manchester, it's Roast Beef for me at Giovanni's.  They also do some Beef Tip Salads with marinated Beef or Chicken that are pretty tasty too.  It's an over the counter (eat in/out) no tipping establishment.

One of their locations is off S. Willow next to Shaws.

The Tilt'n Diner http://www.thecman.com/restaurants/tilton-diner/ (http://www.thecman.com/restaurants/tilton-diner/)
is nice. I have liked every thing I have had there.

Their chicken fried steak with sausage gravy was really good.

The little Pizza place down the road from Gunstock has the
best tasting pizza I have had so far in NH.

Russell's grill makes fine hamburgers, formally in Keene.
But I believe it has located father north.

Jim's wood fired barbecue chicken in Winchester is very good,
you would be willing to fall off a ladder to get some!

The owner of the common man restaurants (including Tilton Diner) set up a program where he was training kids about the restaurant business.  The state came down on him about it, and he had to stop.  :-\

I like Murphy's Taproom in Manchester.  I really enjoy the location and the beer specials.  I often get chicken strips.  The burgers and fish n chips are also above average.

Dollar for dollar, I find the Wendy's in Seabrook is great.  The 10cent jr. frostys cannot be beat.

Pizza is great (considering the cost) at the Costco in Nashua.  I like the meat lovers pizza.

Rick's Ice Cream in Keene has good ice cream and the folks are real nice there.

All of the Dunkin Donuts are good because fresh donuts are amazing.

I only get the Turkey. I'm a big guy, and I get the Jumbo turkey plate - I eat at Hart's then have lunch for a day or two. We actually had them cater our wedding they are that good.

And the owners are good folk.

I'm not too big on paying extra for food I can prepare myself, but Otis is a huge fan of Taco Bell. I usually get him a softshell taco, but have recently switched over to the Cheesy Double Beef Burrito, which is 10 cents cheaper and doesn't have any nasty vegetables.  :P

My selection of New Hampshire prepared food is limited, but so far it would have to go to Vendetta, but that's unfair because the most remarkable thing about them is that they carry Ephemere which is a beer very VERY few places carry. It's not theirs though. :(

I like the Woodstock Inn in Lincoln.

I love their spicy sweet potato ravioli and their stuffed veggie thing, it has a flaky crust, asparagus and other veggies with a cream sauce inside.  They make strong Alabama Slammers too!  :)

My experience is limited and two years out of date, but I have to say the meatball grinders at Lancaster Pizza were incredibly awesome!

The Chinese/American place across the street was great too, but it closed last year. Oh, and New England Cattle Company had great steaks, and eating out on the deck next to the Israel's River was just a beautiful experience. A big goofy Golden Retriever (pardon the redundancy) was playing in the river, then came up on the deck and begged fries from us. We checked his tags, and the waitress called the owners, and three teenage boys soon walked over and took him home.

Damn, I'm homesick.  :'(

Pub: Harlows in Peterborough (http://www.harlowspub.com/harlow%27s-pub-menu.html)
Their Thai Chicken Salad is delish. Their Burritos and Quesadillas are awesome. Bangers and Mash are tasty too.

Indian: Shalimar in Portsmouth (http://www.shalimarindia.com/menu.html)
It's all good ;)

Chinese and Sushi: Lee and Mt Fuji's in Peterborough (http://www.leeandmtfujiatboilerhouse.com/chinese_cuisine.html)
Great menu, large selection, fresh food. And a huge picture window view of Noone Falls in an old, restored boiler house.

Thai: Still looking for Thai food that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. No, the place in Keene does not do it.

more to come...

FYI, during lunch (11:30 - 2:30, according to the website), they have the "burrito cart" (can't recall the actual name).  Very low-cost.  The super-burrito is about $6, including tax.  That's enough burrito for a meal for me, or like two folks with ordinary metabolisms.

The common man in ashland you can play checkers and eat es cargo, which are raised fresh right there in ashland.

Patrick's pub if you like bit O the Irish, owned by former chefs of the business, meaning they bought it off the Irish guy Walter Kellaher who originally started it, real home grown small business shit.

The owners of Christmas Island use to be involved in a cocaine ring, Laconia's got the hells angels and a huge drug market, though I liked working for them, but if you're interested on who's business you support FYI

Hart's Turkey Farm is owned by Jehovah Witnesses and the Naswa originally got their money from suing the pants off Grace Matallias who exposed a family member who was a lawyer in the classic novel Peyton place.

For a real treat go to Boston Bombay India, that place is the shiznit! All your food and sauces come out on bronze plates and sauces in bronze bowls....Hands DOWN the best place I have ever eat'n, sec to Spain and New Orleans.

Yeah, that's an incredible pic. Nature gave you the sky and put you in the right place at the right time, but you saw it, thought to capture it, framed and composed it, and maybe even post-processed it. Nice job.

Oh and for the best redneck hole in the wall chinease restaraunt like off the boat, biker friendly with a beautiful view of Alton bay
JP CHINA Alton bay
you can still smoke here non smoking prolifers need not come ^-^, ummm it's really redneck but I love the charm, sometimes I'd run into a nerdy book store owner and we would talk about antiquated books and history, other times there might be some testosterone driven tension, but at least it was real passionate and full of real human life not what those corporate chains offer more canned philosophy with phony canned jazz piped into the speakers corporate crap ya know.
Alton bay is NHs best kept secret, you can hike mountmajor, swim in the lake, take a ride motor bike or foot powered bike, speed boat or paddle boat and it's the home of Boston Bruins Steven Leech and Bobby Carpenter. Okay thats my plug spent many a wonderful night there, great for the summer.

sounds like nemoslaw is a native  maybe youll run into the ring leader from christmas (cocaine) island im sure hed love to hear what your saying on the forum his name is tony and if you hang out at the chinese restaurant in alton you know him his name is tony.

Tamarak in the summer makes the best lobter rolls bar none

patricks is great if you wanna hang out with cops  and yaucht yuppies

soda shop in laconia has a great inexpensive lunch  corn chowder is great

the corner house in sandwich is real good too

bobbys girl diner and the diner in rumney are both great diner food

alex ray who is the owner of tilton diner and all the common mans also has his hands in most of the restaurants in meredith such as the lakehouse , lago, and more so does john cook
in my opinion ive eaten at tilton diner alot never had one bad breakfast or one good lunch i will never eat lunch or dinner there again. but the common man is a nice comfortable place to relax dine and have a great dinner. playing games upstairs with cocktails and crackers and cheese has always been a favorite after skiing up north.

I have known the Harts  all my life and and worked there a few times as far as i know they are not affiliated with any religeous organization  but their turkey nuggets are the best and harts makes all their own stuff right down to their carrot relish

I worked for Tony, he was a good employer and definitely has character, I don't think that he would care what I said, everyone knows anyway and it has never deterred business probably increased it if anything. Patrick's has other attractions besides cops but it is Irish kinda goes with the territory.
I am an ex local, after shoveling out thousands of dollars for propane heating I jumped ship. I will always miss NH the local flavor etc. certainly harbors the real salt of the earth.
As for gastronomy there is a wonderful seafood stand in Alton right near JP China great fried clams in the summer, and there is a Japanese restaurant in concord by Boarders thats good as well. There are more eateries worthy of mention. I had time to explore these places, being in NH forever allows you to find all the hidden nuances of local flavor. Post more later.

my family owns christmas island and i worked there from 93-2001 running the back kitchen i still stop in to give free stater stuff to hang up in the bar the rumors are very exaggerated i know for a fact ya tony likes to party but is nothing but a cashual user he is also a good friend of mine and it would bother him   however you are a good critic of the area restaurants and i agree with most of your posts . I'm a 47 year old native from Concord. All my life I have heard about Harts Turkey farm in Meredith,so the wife and my daughter and I tried it last summer. We thought it was awful! The turkey seemed to have come out of a can and the veggies were no better. We left before finishing. The waitress was very nice so we tipped well but we won't go back.

Sounds like a bad turkey... did you complain to the management?  I've had the best turkey there more than once... they cook a great and tender turkey IMHO.  I still have to try the one in Manchester, but I have no reason to expect anything other than a good meal.

thats too bad about your harts experience nothing worse than going out expecting a good meal and having it suck. now i havent worked at harts in 20 years but when i worked there i can say honestly everthing was made fresh daily things change but i still eat there take out once a month and its always consistent but i always get the same thing turkey nuggets. I suggest going back explaining about your previous experience and i bet they take good care of you they dont serve 2,000 meals a day in the summer for no reason. we used to strip 36 turkeys every day in the summer and that was in the 1980's. The restaurant is now run by all the grand kids but i still see the main hart family when i go in.

I wasn't sure what to put for this, and it feels premature right now because I've only eaten there a couple of times, but I'm beginning to think that Pedraza's in Keene's Central Square will become my favorite restaurant.

I've been to the Airport diner once..and loved it.had the buffalo burger, sweet potato fries, onion rings  :D
love the interior, fun to stand or sit in the bathroom and read all the writing on the walls..
must say the waitress we had was very cheerful.i like what they do with the white hats.putting their names on them and leaving them at the table is a good idea at helping customers remember their waitresses names..

I don't think I mentioned this one in my first post on this subject.

It's in Campton or Thornton and it's named The Sugar Shack.   It's only opened on the weekend I think, and they serve the food on sturdy paper plates with plastic spoons/forks/knives, it is so good!    They have tons on their menu and plus you get tons of food for your order.

It's just a breakfast place.  Rick found it one time when he stayed at a motel, (we had a fight and needed a night away from each other), so he ate there the next morning.  :)

Concord: Sal's Pizza, get extra cheese.

Tio Juan's Margarita's used to be good, but they lobbied for the smoking ban, so they're dead to me.

Pizzaria Uno's, go during the snack hour thing, $3 dishes.

Applebees, during half off appetizer's hours only. Boneless buffalo wings.

And I personally think the Barley House downtown is way overrated, BUT the Dublin Burger there is no doubt a tasty burger. If you like burgers, give em a try some time.

And I'm an Olive Garden enthusiast, but I imagine they're good everywhere.

Hey Dale, can you tell me, Is Pedraza's Italian food and where is it located? :) (is it the restaurant that you have to enter via a long hallway, then upon entry, it opens up to a street view, not far from the library?)

Yeah, I like breakfast all day too!  This place is only open until 2 pm though.

Remember Howard Johnsons?  Are they still open?    My girlfriend and I ate there early after going to a bar and these creepy guys kept bugging us, we turned down their offer to buy our breakfast and sit with us.  So we came out of Howies and her tires were slashed, creeps!  >:(

"The Pickety place" is an excellent dining experience for a mothers day treat, however has a pre selected menu and requires reservations, but good for a special day!

sidenote;) I don't understand why all these corporate places are being mentioned (KFC, applebees), you can get that in any state outside of NH, but I guess we all have to be employed some how.

"The Italian Farmhouse" takes you to the old country. I had the Duck, first time eating duck wasn't bad. Italian is piped through the bathrooms, so you can do your business and learn to speak Italiano at the same time. They also have a delectable bread bar with fresh olive oil for dipping, to please the senses with combinations of rosemary! I have to go now I'm hungry.

I second the motion for The "Red Arrow" diner in Manch, I love the coffee, the kitchen and wait staff are friendly make ya feel right at home. The restroom is in the kitchen, so you can talk to the cooks while yur waiting;} Oh and they have the best coconut cream pie!

Another fun place in Manch where you can get a great artichoke dip and watch a blues jam is "Strange Brew", lots of good bikers hang there, so I guess you could say hogs are welcome. I ride so I am partial.

Ate at The Fish Shanty (http://www.thefishshanty.com/) (in downtown Dover) last night.

Too expensive for everyday dining, but the quality and service were great, so they're substantially less than they could get away with, making it a good value.

I had a tuna fillet sandwich, and had them cook it rare.  If they can do rare fish and have it taste good, then they are obviously using high quality (sushi-grade) fish.  We were out with the kids and both sets of grandparents.  The owner personally came out to help distract the kids while we were all getting settled, and supplied real crayons (not the junk pseudo-crayons that big chains give away) for them to play with.

Bathrooms were clean, even.  I was impressed, and it's rare that a restaurant impresses me by anything other than low prices.

Joe
