Title: AltExpo#3 at LF09
Post by: jaqeboy on February 16, 2009, 11:25 PM NHFT
Well, in case you were wondering, we're going to do it again, and bigger and more interesting than ever:

The Alternatives Expo will have a presence on the 2nd floor of the hotel during the Liberty Forum!

If you haven't heard of us before, we present a variety of alternatives to the mainstream that you can join in on when you come to New-Hampshire - you can meet the people who are the leaders in their alt. area in New Hamps. so you can jump right in with them and hit the ground running when you get here.

Subject to finalization, we'll have presenters on:
Alternative money systems, both metal and on-line hours based,
Alternative transportaion, pedal and electric-powered,
Computer security (as an alternative to just letting the whole world read your email and HD),
Alt. building techniques,
Alt. power generation methods,
Alt. history ("he who controls the past, controls the future"),
Alt. medicine (featuring an iridology demonstration),
Alt. libertarian philosophy - getting back to our roots and our principles in action,
Alt. citizenship,
Alt. commerce methods,
Alt. living communities (eco-villages and autonomous self-governance),
Alt. education methods (featuring flash animation videos)

A whole lot more stuff - all to be posted soon.

If you've seen our site, you know we need serious web site design help, so volunteer needed there.

We'll have a suite of 3 rooms for 3 nites, so welcome your visits to the hospitality room, the presentation room and the Alt. video theater room.

We could use volunteers in some areas, so if you'd like to help, please write to volunteer@AltExpo.org!

It's going to be a great year, and remember: "Quit protesting your lack of freedom and just take it back."

That's awesome Jack!  Looks like you're got a nice set up for your Alt. Expo and it's great to see you'll be featuring it at the Liberty Forum!

Did I mention that I've been part of Alt Expo before (and may be again)?
Oh shucks --- if you missed it, we missed you!

Maybe you've actually been at an Alt Expo event and did not even know it.  Alt Expo has been at many of the events that you've loved! ... Liberty Forum . . . Porcupine Freedom Fest .... & the Burning Porcupine Party in Grafton.

If you missed it before, please don't miss it again. Please be a part of/help create the peaceful future.

I'm thinking of riding my trike to it, but would need to find a place to sleep.  While I think I could probably ride all the way to Nashua in one day, I think it would be better to find a place to sleep somewhere along the way (perhaps between Epping and Derry).  I can't afford to rent a room, but would consider some kind of barter for a place to sleep.  I've made some nice upgrades to my trike since last year.  It now has fenders, headlights, a taillight, a cargo basket, a bell, an air horn and an improved drivetrain.  I would also like to work out some kind of free or cheap sleeping arrangement during LF09.  If you would be willing to share some space with me, please send me a message.  I can cook breakfast or do something else (negotiable) for whomever shares their space with me.  Jack asked me if I would be willing to give a presentation on human powered transportation alternatives.  I would like to do that, and figured that it would be best if I went there under my own power.

It looks like I will probably be able to get transportation for me and my trike to Nashua on Friday if the weather isn't cooperating on Wednesday or Thursday.

Excellent stuff.

Thanks, Puke - we've got some topics and presenters you'll really dig. We're starting to implement the follow on all-day sessions -- each 1 hour topic at the Alt Expo at LF will just be a teaser for something that could go all day, so we'll be scheduling all day things as follow-ons with really detailed how-to, as interest warrants. We've pegged several venues around the state to hold these sessions in. Each presenter can promote his enterprise, too. For example, one of the alt. health presenters gives trainings at his office in Nashua, so you can learn about those trainings from his handout. If energy is your thing, we'll point you to the Sustainable Energy Association, which has workshops and Alt Expo has already held all-day community currency workshops back in December.

Presently, we'll be in rooms 202, 204 & 206, unless we upgrade to a larger suite that may be available (we'll know in a day or two). Anyway, it'd be cool if anyone wants to get their rooms across the hall to expand the party space.

We'll be having a hospitality service, featuring all New-Hampshire/Porcupine-made beverages and a Porcupine bartender!

Thank you John for the plug on Free Talk Live - also good vibes from Ian, Mark and Sam (http://cdn2.libsyn.com/ftl/FTL2009-02-18.mp3?nvb=20090219183100&nva=20090220184100&t=0c5c5ed25625bf3ef627d)! (about 90% of the way along)

I'll call in tonight to explain the philosophy of the event and mention some of the speakers. It's all about "what are you going to do with your freedom?", or to steal barterer's old tagline: "Stop complaining about your loss of freedom and just take it back!"

Aw!!  Man!!!  I was gonna go to your presentation, but, you know.............what with you not getting there on your own power and all...... :P
I rode my trike to and from work this Tuesday, and while it wasn't too bad going to work, heading home after 11pm was miserable  My shifter cables froze up so I couldn't downshift, making going up hills really difficult.  My hands were in extreme pain from the cold, and a solid chunk of ice formed on my face.  If the weather cooperates, I will probably leave by trike on Wednesday or Thursday.  If it's too cold out on Wednesday and Thursday, I will probably cycle part way (about 12 miles) on Friday and catch a ride the rest of the way.  There are ways of remedying the problems I had in the cold, but they require upgrades that cost more money than I can come up with at this time.  So the weather will determine whether I go all the way under my own power or only part way under my own power.

Jaqueboy, will there be a video projector available (and perhaps a computer which I can plug my flash drive into) if I want to give a video enhanced presentation?

Yes, we'll have one or more projectors and screens and a dedicated computer for presentations. Just contact Dan Stuart at dan@stuartsit.com and tell him what you need and he'll make sure it's in place.

Kevin Innes, the silver guy from Asheville, North Carolina is coming up and presenting in both the Liberty Forum and the Alt Expo. He'll also have a booth at LF and will have materials available and videos being shown upstairs in the Alt Expo rooms.

We'll have workshops for the public on Thursday evening in Room 202 of the hotel and Monday, 9 March in Manchester at the Great Buffet (in the party room). These workshops are to tell folks about the opportunity to purchase silver in bulk in our pool to get the lowest prices, how to get involved as a silver trader yourself to make some money at it, and how to promote use of silver as a local currency in the community.

Kevin just sent this in:

QuoteWhile the Liberty Forum is going on I would like to get some activity going in Nashua.  I can train and organize groups of activists to go out and talk to businesses while we are there. Weather permitting.  I'm going to challenge people to do more than just talk - how about putting their talking into action by talking to people and businesses in the community about Honest Money.

From these events we will get more people to canvas the area on Monday March 9 and also Tuesay March 10.  Let's get the ball rolling and show people how much excitement we can create in a short time about Real, Honest Money in NH!

We should hear later today if we can get Mark Weissflog, the biggest installer of solar systems in New Hampshire to fit in a one hour talk. It turns out there is a home show the same weekend that he has a booth in. We hope to get him in at 11AM Friday or 10AM Saturday, so he can stop in with us for an hour on his way to the home show while his partners open up the booth there.

His company is KW Management (http://www.kwmanagement.com/) in Nashua. They're a commercial electrical contractor and their Clean Energy Technologies (http://www.kwmanagement.com/Clean_Energy/index.htm) division does the alt. energy installations. Hope he can fit us in. Oh, yeah, he's also on the Board of the New Hampshire Sustainable Energy Association, nhsea.org (http://nhsea.org).

Excellent, just got the call that Mark Weissflog of Clean Energy Technologies will present for an hour at 11AM Friday on "Energy Alternatives in New-Hampshire".

Mark is on the Board of NHSEA and on the State Building Code Review Board, so if you have any questions about renewable energy systems and how they can be implemented in homes or businesses here (and meet codes), he is the #1 guy to talk to.

Things are shaping up - I'll try to have the speakers roster posted to AltExpo.org tonight.

Kevin Innes will be presenting Saturday on "The Power of Honest Money; Reclaiming Community Economics." He is recruiting folks to form Consumer Action Networks, or CANs all over the country.

Still massaging the schedule, but he's holding workshops open to the public Thursday before LF and Monday after, as well as having a timeslot in the main Liberty Forum program.

Looks like Mike Barskey and Kat are going to conduct another PiMP my activism session. I'm giving up my 4PM Friday slot to include them in. This will be great! Everyone remember that we do have computers, projectors and a screen if you have A/V material. Also, handouts, business cards, any other material to leave with people is good!

Anton, sorry to not be clear, so here's the official invite: "Come on up to the Alt Expo!" - There's no charge (though we'll mercilessly beg for donations after every talk and at every other opportunity until we get the rooms paid for! And, since it's a co-operatively created thang, we could use your help spreading the word, and if you've got a topic you'd like to share with the Porcupine community, bring it on! We'll find a time slot and place for it somehow. We've got 3 rooms that we have to fill with fun, free-speech and friendship, so jump in and join us!

We got word about an hour ago that Ed Hale of Plains Radio (plainsradio.com) will be having ChasEric and Dan hosting the radio show Friday and Saturday night from Room 206 at the AltExpo. More on this as time goes on. I know they want to do 5 minute interviews with everyone they can snag, so come prepared with your story and your perspective on why you plan to come to New-Hampshire (or why you moved here, if you're already here).

OK, Kevin Innes, the Silver Man has arrived. If anyone is interested in meeting with him for dinner tonight, call me at 233-1058. He's going to be going over how to promote use of silver money as community currency by establishing Community Action Networks, or CANs. This looks like an exciting new way to work with the community and promote metal money and all survive all this financial crash mess. Give a call - we're in Nashua right now.

He and Kevin Innes will be eating dinner at Bertucci's in Nashua (406 Amherst St. (http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=406+Amherst+St,+Nashua,+NH+03063+(Bertucci's+Brick+Oven+Restaurant)&geocode=CZapslB8JFDvFVPdjAIddNK8-yH_uaA_KdAhdQ&dirflg=&saddr=4+Martin+St,+Derry,+NH+03038&f=d&dq=bertucci's+loc:+nashua,+nh&sll=42.786131,-71.511436&sspn=0.062383,0.104573&cid=8440256052248754687&ie=UTF8&z=12)) at 7:00p tonight (Wednesday, March 4).

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join them (and me) for dinner and casual talk about CANs (Community Action Networks - trading in silver).

If me makes it there, I will test/PUSH the sustainability of alternative notes! I have in hand 4 1/10 & 1 full "Expo Hours."
That/our Micro-economy did extraordinarily well at the most recent PorcFest and, methinks these will continue to be accepted.

BTW - There are still several "collectors edition" Alt-Expo t-shirts available!

Much of what we do is actually for our children's (and grandchilden's) sake. RIGHT?
So, while you still have the chance, why not buy one of the Alt-Expo shirts for your (daughter or) granddaughter? . . .

I just met barterer in real life today, as well as his wife and daughter - all very cool people. He told me he's preparing a really thorough presentation so people will really get a good lesson from the master on how to trade in Shire Hours!

cool!

Iaian is volunteering to help at the AltExpo, so he'll get the email address Iain@AltExpo.org, so you can write him there, Kat@AltExpo.org!

By the way, Iain, Kevin, Janice and I think a couple of others are starting up a Nashua Community Action Network today! by leafletting local businesses about creating a sustainable economy by encouraging circulation of silver money. If anyone wants to join in and get some on-the-street training from Kevin, the master at this, call him at: 828-582-7637. (Warm socks and shoes suggested!)

The AltExpo 3   at the last minute has had an upgrade. It will not be held on the 2nd floor. We got a suite on the 3rd floor room 353. Much more usable space. There will be signs to direct you.

I can't speak for the Liberty Forum, only for myself.  However, my response turned into such a rant, much of which isn't necessarily directed at AltExpo, that I'm going to post it in a different thread so as not to hijack this one.

The Energy Alternatives talk this morning had about 25 attenders and Mark did a great job covering all the bases.

Russell just finished his Welcome to the Shire and computer security is the next topic.

If you want to view the talks live on the web, go to http://qik.com/yadravoat

It's dead silence here without your guitar!

Well, actually, we've had to close the door to keep the joyfull noise down. We're down at the end of a long hall, but apparently the sound shoots all the way down the hall  :-[ oops.

Today's sessions went great and Tim was awesome with his trike and videos. He brought the trike into our show-and-tell area and just an hour ago was seen trying to see how much speed he could get up going down the parking ramp!

Mark Weissflog gave a breathless tour through the energy alternatives in New-Hampshire. Not good prospects for cost-effective wind power, though...

J'raxis gave a great overview of computer security issues and has committed to do a full day session before too long where you bring your own computer and he'll guide you through upgrading your own software to make your computing more safe and secure.

The PiMP was here! They busted out the walls with people wanting to observe and participate in being "stopped by the cops".

Good day was had by all.

Another full day tomorrow!

Thanks, Lloyd, it was great seeing you there at the talks and the parties!  ;)

I know you were there in spirit! But, I think we are building a brand, ie, people are beginning to see that we'll search out and invite a bunch of the folk that they want to hear. In fact, we invited Stefan before, but due to budget constraints, ie zero budget, he declined.

And, In case you haven't had enough....

The indefatigable Kevin Innes invites you to meet him at Murphy's at 3:30 PM today to join him in a Community Action Network on-the-street training - How to promote use of "community acting currency" among the merchant community. We'll show them that if they want more customers, we'll steer people from our network their way, as long as they're using honest money (usu. silver, copper, gold, Shire Hours, etc.)

Kevin's an awesome trainer, and this session will be well worth anyone's while to observe the master at work.

Also, we're promoting attendance by these same people at a workshop this evening at the Great Buffet on South Willow Street at 7PM - come at least a half hour earlier to get your buffet dinner. We'll be in the party room to the left of the lobby. (I'll start a separate thread for these efforts).

disclaimer to any of my friends ... I found Kevin Innes to be semi-interesting, but also very pushy/annoying. But maybe you might love him. :)

I really liked the Shire Hours talk. PiMP was enjoyed by the packed crowd.

Jack did a good job of hosting. I look  forward to the altexpo activities at burning porcupine, where we will lots of room. ;)

Yeah, the wide open spaces at the farm would be nice after all the crowded conditions at the AltExpo suite this past weekend. Our 30 foot tent took a big load of water and collapsed  at PorcFest, bending a bunch of the poles. The canvases are all good, still, but in the spring, I'm going to see if I can make the pole system work again with some substitutes.
