Title: Humanitarian Relief for Tsunami Victims
Post by: jcpliberty on December 30, 2004, 02:04 AM NHFT
After just finishing up a LONG WINDED ARGUMENT with a socialist about how BENEVOLENT we libertarians really are and about how we shouldn't be relying on tax dollars to aid victims of mother nature, I went a made a donation to the Read Cross. Amazon.com is collecting donations for them. They are the least partisan group I could find giving aid to these people in southeast asia.

P.S. $3,741,512.69 have been donated by this method already. Help give more!

How about donations to the thousands of homeless combat veterans living on our own streets this holiday season?

I don't see anything wrong with voluntary donations to veterans.  No one's being forced to do anything.  Veterans get help, the people donating get the chance to thank the veterans.

Dont mind me, Im just being rhetorical.
My point is Americans should be wary of casting thier eyes (and cash) abroad, when there are those in need right under thier very noses.

Case in point:

"The Iraq War is a little different because there seems to be more support. However, with soldiers coming home and hospitals closing, the same thing could happen again, where we have a lot of soldiers show up with nowhere to go," stated Dorrell.

While I tend to agree and I do in fact donate quite regularly to vets groups, there is a dire threat right now to millions of people in southeast asia. While they both warrant action, this one seems like it is an urgent situation. I just hope that if a tragedy like this ever hit us that we would receive voluntary donations from our human brethren around the globe.

I am not against helping those in SE Asia, but I am saddened by the fact of Americans virtually ignoring those men and women that have served this nation.

I agree. But those of us who are not ignoring them (myself included) are the same ones not ignoring SE Asia.
