So this is to start helping us single liberal converting guys get some input from the women folke on talking and spending time with someone not quite so male...

give good advice, we know all the listen and look in her EYES stuff (i hope)  but some great ideas on the REAL things guys have done and said that got you thinking about them when they were not around would be great.

Here is my first one, don't be a wimp, and dont call her the same night you get her number you just come off as needy

If you don't mind an oldster piping up here. I've had some good first dates. I went for the coffee option, but here is some more input. I assume the eyes meeting across the room has already occurred. And also that this date is for more than just fun. Fun doesn't require a lot of talking and there are plenty of those options.

I like the idea of getting to know someone, without others around and in the light of day with a clear head as a first date. If she isn't impressed, you haven't wasted a lot of time or money. If she doesn't see you as potentially exciting partner, you may have more chances.

Now, to make that good impression, choose the atmosphere.  Lunch might even be better than coffee. As long as it isn't burger, pizza, KFC. Casual, not stuffy. Go for a sandwich/salad/soup place and make it leisurely. Avoid the topics of government, politics, and only skim through the family stuff. Maybe talk about the food. Or travel or animals or nature.

Dinner and a movie.
Dinner gives you time to chit-chat and get to know the person, plus it gives both parties lots of flexibility about how topical or intimate the discussion goes. Then the movie, which gives you the option of something to talk about afterward.

Coffee and chit-chat, or walk and chit-chat, with no other distraction, is good for the SECOND date (and subsequent).

I voted for "something else," it depends on the people involved, but I suppose dinner and a movie must be a good catchall for everyone consdering it's popularity.

Having never been on a first date, I'm not entirely sure what the ideal first date would be. The first time my now-husband and I chatted was extremely painful and I spent a lot of the time pm-ing friends asking them for potential subjects of discussion

Okay, so I just asked my husband what he would consider the best first date and here was his reply:

i still dont get the american dating thing
if he would be in finland it would be easy:
1) get her quite drunk
2) get yourself really drunk
3) ask her to sleep with you
4) next week ask her to move in
5) repeate to separate girls if first try fails

I'm glad we met online...

The fun route is the easiest. Charge up the chemistry and let it take it's course. But it can be the costliest. The fun part will carry you a year or more and if you know there isn't long term potential, extricating at that point hurts all the way around.

I voted for dinner and a movie.  In my experience, the modern American dating scene is frought with uncertainty and ambivalence.  So many guys play it SO casual that I'm left wondering what it is they're really thinking.  Does he like me? Are we just friends? What the hell is going on?!  Coffee is fine if it's a blind date, or someone you barely know, but it's a bit vague if you definitely like someone and are attempting to express romantic interest, IMHO.

Also, scheduling in advance makes a difference.  There's a substantive difference between calling a woman and saying "Will you have dinner with me this weekend" and "Hey, I'm at Murphy's having a beer, why don't you come over and join me?"

And I have to say:  if the magic is there, you don't seem like a wimp or needy if you call right away...  you seem romantic and just as taken with her as she is with you...

Don't do it.  Don't listen to a girl about this.  Don't call the same day.  Almost never call the next day, either.  Rarely call the 2nd day, either.  The only reason to call super early is if you are in town for a short amount of time or just wanna have sex, and yes, those are the same reason (and both signs that you are not going to have an actual relationship with the person).

Rule number one in dating.  Forget the rule book.

Women don't really like men who play games, and men suck at it so they shouldn't even try. Personally, I think the whole rules nonsense (don't call until day whatever) was invented by women to test which men are dumb enough to fall for it.

If you want to call a woman the next day, go for it.

This is a tough one.  I picked Bill up While we were both Boy Scout Explores.  I took him to a nice polish restaurant a round the corner from me for lunch and then went to a party at one of my friends house.  It worked out really well.  As far as advice for the single guy here it goes.

I would try to find out some of the things she is into.  You should spend some time talking to her before you ask her out.

Dinner and a movie is alright first date but then you need to find a movie that doesn't suck that she will also want to watch.

Small live concerts will impress her if you know she will enjoy the type of music.  It doesn't matter if she has heard of the band just if it is a genre she listens to.

I love going to parks or festivals,  These are inexpensive and you can have dinner after.

If you meet her at a club she will want to go dancing.  That is why women go to clubs they want to get drunk and dance.  They dress up to look better than the other women at the club to prove they are more in style.  If you don't like to dance don't go looking at clubs for women.

Ice skating is always fun.  It is even better if one or both of you don't know what you are doing.

Museums are good only if you know she likes them or there is a good exhibit that you would both be good at.

Craft shows are fun if she is artsy because you can enjoy or critique the exhibitors.  Juried shows then to have better art and crafts.

Hiking is good if she likes to hike.  Choose very good weather and don't pick a tough trail or very long trail.  You want to talk and take time to look at the scenery.  I also don't recommend catching snakes and other small creatures this could freak her out.  Pack a nice picnic lunch. Bring the food and drinks in backpack and don't let her carry it.  Pack a blanket, and put the lunch in nice looking containers.

If she has a cause that she supports find out if they are having an event and suggest going to it.  You may not like the politics of the event but be polite and what till another day to make suggestions.

Flowers are very good anytime.  Random occasions and deliveries are best.  Never give flowers as an apology they will go right in the trash.   Home grown and store bought are great but recycled from another event are in bad taste.

Find out if she has food allergies and what types of food she does or doesn't eat before you try to feed her.

me and dans first date and i quote from mister romantic "I dont date, I am not looking for a relationship"  I was crushed, and said to myself, FUCK THAT, he WILL date me!

2 weeks later he was "seeing" someone, so i drove Dan nuts, and drove the other chick far far away!!  HAH!

i am so evil!

good first dates i think, are places where there are people around having fun, and you can chat.  I hate going to a movie on a "blind" date, just sitting there, next to someone you hardly know.  Unless he does the bag O' Popcorn trick, HAH!  (kidding)

I met Rick at a bar during a friend of mine's birthday party.  Me and my friend were dancing and she told me some guy was staring at my butt I turn around and voila there's Rick! ::)   We ended up having a great time, we even danced in the parking lot.  I was moving at the time so I told him to call me in a couple of weeks but he called the next day and I liked that actually. :)
So anyways we talked on the phone for about 3 weeks before we went on our first date and we went to a bar, talked a lot, danced, got drunk, and passed out at my apartment.
I loved our 2nd date: It was at the park and I made falafel mix, (dried chickpea powder and water), so when we put them on the grill they fell into the fire.  I lost my apartment keys and a biker helped me break into my car to see if the keys were there, nope they weren't there so then we walked back to my apt. and my neighbor used a ladder to climb into my window, (I lived on the 3rd floor).  We got a flashlight and went back to the park looking in trash cans and everywhere I finally found them on the ground somewhere.  It was fun believe it or not.  I have all kinds of hilarious dating stories with me and Rick but I won't hog the thread. ;D

see the reason i like the coffee date is that it is maybe 30-45 min. and it is more of a screening process then anything else.  its hard to flirt on the phone, and face to face it is easier to see if they are nuts.  then if they pas (because both people should be making sure the other is good enough) then you go on a longer date that is some kind of fun adventure.  My dad told me never to do dinner and a movie before the third date... it was the only advice i ever got from my dad about anything, other then that the movie should always come before dinner that way you have more of a built in toppic.  Thanks for all the thoughts, this is great.

As far as calling her the day after go for it.  Just don't call her 3 times a day to find out why she hasn't called you.  Women like attention.  We don't like clingy/creepy.

If you do a nice dinner and a movie on the first date you set yourself up for a lot of costly dates.

Coffee or lunch is good if you haven't meet face to face before.  If you did meet and talk previously than something more interesting is called for.

Also if you are going to bring her to your place clean it.  I'm talking the whole place not just your room.  Gross bathrooms and dirty kitchens are a turnoff.

Really I can't stand clingy/creepy!  I remember this one guy I met at a keg party when I was 15 or 16  and I was drunk; he was looking good so I figured, what the hell?  Little did I know he was a virgin, and he followed me around offering me jewelry for weeks.  ::)

Good point about a costly 1st date, do women still expect men to pay or is "dutch" the in thing?

I'm gathering that your ready for a serious dating relationship, right?  Finding the "right" girl?  How come no one has mentioned taking a girl out for a few drinks?  Maybe you don't drink, I don't know but sometimes a couple of drinks can make people feel at ease and then all of the worrying goes away, right?
I've known a lot of people that have met or gone to a bar on the 1st date and it's turned into a great relationship.   :)

Ladies,
Guys can't guess what you like to do.  If you don't mind talking to them, suggest an event.  If they listen, that's a good sign.
Best first date for me, a volksmarch.  A big group of people take walk in the country.  There are many people, but it's quiet so you can talk, if the guy scares or offends you, ignore him and walk/talk with someone else.

If the guy is oh so interesting and friendly, go to the best second date: UFO hunting.  Take a walk in the country at night, with a big piece of sheet metal so you can "call the UFOs" by wobbling the sheet back and forth making a cool noise.  Silly, sure, but hey, it worked for Jim and I.

Heh-heh.

I will share one concept I acquired in the south.  If you're naked, that means you're not wearing any clothes.  However, if you're nekkid, that means you're up to something.

Therefore, if you aren't wearing any clothes, and it's your first date, there's no point in trying to say y'all ain't nekkid.

I don't buy that.  Most of the single guys up here are looking for a girl who has her act together and has a clue about liberty and responsibility.  If a guy doesn't come across as having his act together she can easily find someone who does.  Attention to details and creativity are going to work better at attracting someone that could be open to liberty and anti government ideas.

This is a great idea but not for the first date.

You want to be somewhere she feels safe until she knows you well enough to know that you aren't going to turn into some monster that will harm her.

Besides finding the self-thinking-anti-gov-hippie-chick who loves animals is the hard part.  There aren't many of us.  Most of the women I know that fit this description are in solid relationships.  The idea of this thread is to give the guys ideas on how to attract a woman open to these ideas and weed out the rest.

Our first date was dinner and an indoor soccer game. Set the wayback machine to February 12, 1982, Chicago Stadium (now torn down), Chicago Sting (now defunct).

I don't like movies for first dates because you don't talk and rarely can find a movie that you both will really enjoy.

Non-major sporting events are nice, because it's in a public place, but the crowd is more laid back, and you can talk without upsetting folks.

P.S. Big plug for M: she saved the ticket stub all these years and framed it for me as a 20th wedding anniversary present. I'm looking at it right now... Maybe I should go home early...

But don't clean too much.  Women like to help guys.  If your house if perfect, you seem too smart, or you have everything together you may not be as fun in her eyes.  More importantly, she might feel bad (because chances are her place is not really clean) or even worse, she might expect you too keep your place super clean.

If she hit the road because there was nothing to fix i would say THANK YOU!!! i dont want to spend my time with a chick that wants to be my mom

I like a comfy quiet peaceful atmosphere at her or my house, fireplace burning, a few candles and shoes kicked off. I need the mental stimulation with good conversation. She has to be a self-thinking-anti-gov- hippie-chick who loves animals.

Kola

This is a great idea but not for the first date.

You want to be somewhere she feels safe until she knows you well enough to know that you aren't going to turn into some monster that will harm her.

Besides finding the self-thinking-anti-gov-hippie-chick who loves animals is the hard part.  There aren't many of us.  Most of the women I know that fit this description are in solid relationships.  The idea of this thread is to give the guys ideas on how to attract a woman open to these ideas and weed out the rest.

OH.  :-\
someplace safe? umm..I do not know any safe places other than my "love-shack"..lol

maybe I can run an ad: need good hippy-chick with a brain and Ron Paul stickers on her VW bus.

of course if you get the right girl, those rape fantasies are... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Actually rape fantasies rank in the top ten most common fantasies (so says the sex bible)  i thought this was strange as well, but apparently it has to do with wanting to have guilt free sex, and other fantasies in which one is dominated.  It has less to do with the actuality of being raped then it does submission.  Perhaps there is something in our genetic programing that really longs for the good old just club them days...

Pat, Pat, Pat...that's so pas'e.

A couple days before I started going out with Lauren, we were playing a game of Hearts with some of the Army officers.  We were teamed together.  Lauren was picking a card and looked at me, I winked at her.  She paused for a moment and then kept on playing.  That evening I was looking out of a third story barracks window, actually hoping to see her, and there she was, sitting all by her self on a picnic table in the middle of the commons between our buildings.  I rushed down stairs and sort of ambled over to see her.  She was reading the very first issue of Heavy Metal magazine.   I sat down beside her.  She was sitting on the table not the bench.  We talked about the magazine and other things.
Later, some of our other friends came by and suggested going to a movie.  We where all piling into a '62 Thunderbird when Maxwell, one of these likable guys who is unaware of the rest of the world, barged in and took the last seat in the car before Lauren.  Lauren begged off being crammed in a car with 4 guys and 2 other girls.
I remember feeling disappointed.  I remember thinking that I could just get out of the car and we could go do something else.  I remember just having had my heart torn out and sliced in to little pieces, baked at 350 deg. for an hour and served to me cold by some bitch not more than a year earlier...so the movie sucked.

I think it was the next day that I asked her if she was going to walk in the 10K Volksmarch.

I suppose Mary and I had our first "date" on our wedding date.

I was on a date when I met her, at a gathering of mutual friends. I ditched my date, and we spent that weekend --and every weekend until we were married-- together. We lived 80 miles apart, and spent every possible moment together. We met July 28, and wed February 14.

Wait... I guess we did have one "date" before we got married. On her birthday, I drove down to take her to lunch, then drove back because I had to be at work at 4. That was two weeks to the day before we married.  :)

I don't like movies for first dates because you don't talk and rarely can find a movie that you both will really enjoy.

Dinner and a movie is the WORST idea.
1. cliche
2. can't talk in a movie
3.  dinner can have all sorts of pitfalls.

"Dating" seems like it's just some rote exercise; the whole premise of dating just seems so rigid, structured and defined; and IMO, doesn't really seem much different than applying for employment. Whatever happened to serendipity or just going with the flow?

Spending quality time, getting to know someone, is all good. Dating; I'll pass, thank you.

One of the best things about being married, is not having to deal with all the "dating" crap anymore.

Now I can just go to dinner and a movie(*) with my very best friend (assuming we got a babysitter) and the "afterwards" is a sure thing  ;)

* = "movie" here is a generic term that encompasses "theater", "concert", "comedy show" and "getting plastered at the restaurant and barely being able to stumble home afterwards"
Title: Re: best first date
Post by: KBCraig on October 13, 2007, 09:26 PM NHFT
I never did really "date". I "courted" instead, although that was never really my plan. I pretty much went from one long-term girlfriend to the next, usually with a long break in between.

I never even asked Mary out. From the moment we met, we knew it was something special, and we married 6-1/2 months later.

Hip clicking sounds too much like something senior citizens would do.

Personally I like giving women the option of going back to my place and doing the things I'll tell my friends we did anyway.  That's always a good start to the date.  Sitting home alone and mowing down the old bone by yourself just doesn't cut it.

Best First Date:

March 18th, 1966

---

Or perhaps scenic drive in an open top car.  Down to a cafe on the coast for an afternoon coffee/tea or maybe a balconied restaurant/bistro in the mountains with a great view. Just talk and get to know each other, etc. And then I'll pop the inevitable "oh, btw, I'm married"

Same here.

I think another factor being, the sound/audio equipment of most drive-ins was pretty archaic, so as most drive-ins were not capable of generating large profits they could not keep up withe quality compared to indoor theaters. The last movie I saw at a drive-in was E.T. so perhaps my reference is a bit dated.  ;D

Theres def. a nostalgic feeling associated with drive-ins for me, but for actually watching a movie, I prefer indoor theaters.

When I was a kid we were within a 5 mile drive to about 4 drive-ins.  One night every few weeks my parents, with us 3 kids in pajamas in the back seat, with thermoses  of coffee and milk and apple turnovers from the local bakery would go to a drive-in. Usually the first film was family faire, followed by a cartoon.  The second movie was often not family faire.  The theory was that we would be asleep by them, but, I saw 'night of the Hunter' from the back seat at about 8 years old. It scared the Hell out of me! I was a little older when I saw the 'risque'  'Anatomy of a Murder'.
