Title: Freedom activism in the Lebanon/Dartmouth area.
Post by: Porcupine_in_MA on October 25, 2007, 11:35 AM NHFT
I figured it would be good to start a thread where folk can discuss freedom activism in this area because there doesn't seem to be one already. *IS* there any going on? All I seem to hear and see is from Keene, Concord and Manchester areas.

That, and NHLA flyers too.

NHLA tri-folds (http://nhliberty.org/files/NHLA%20Trifold%20Brochure.pdf) couldn't hurt, I suppose, but:
1) they only "work" for people who are already basically libertarian, and
2) Dartmouth kids generally need deprogramming from the Socialism they've been hoodwinked on

FTL is excellent at #2

I took some copies of the Keene Free Press to Dartmouth last year and they got taken within a day... I agree though, FTL fliers are a good idea.

At least the graduate students there seem to be receptive to freedom-oriented ideas.  Ron Paul came to give a talk about health care at the med school and it was very well attended by med students, grad students, and those from the engineering and business schools.  I saw two videographers but so far I unfortunately haven't found it on YouTube.  Granted they also had some hacks from the Hillary and Obama campaigns talking about health care policies too - but I think those drew much smaller crowds.

Yea, you're right though Porcupine - this area is sadly lacking in the civil disobedience area.

Maybe we can brainstorm in person at the next Dartmouth Area monthly meeting.

This is an article about it in The Dartmouth Review.    http://dartreview.com/archives/2007/10/14/ron_paul_md_speaks_on_health_care.php

Fantastic article. Not negative or sarcastic at all. Thanks for posting it. I'm hoping more Porcs are moving to the Lebanon area, so we get some activism and energy moving up there..especially with the college.

I heard that some people just moved to Croydon.

There is a Ron Paul meetup in that area and those people 'think like us'.

Hi Kat,
Sorry for the long lag... next Dartmouth Area Meeting I will bring a map of Dartmouth's campus and show you the best spots to deliver papers.  That would be awesome!  I think there are definitely more freedom-friendly folks at Dartmouth than one might expect. :)

And totally off-topic, Lauren is free, yay!!  :jailbird:

Ever heard of Ed and Elaine Brown from Plainfield, NH?  ;)

Granted it's pretty much over now but I'd say that was some pretty serious civil disobedience.

I agree with Liberty Belle, good choice for a name and it should have an big-time appeal to college kids with the word "underground" in there. Hey, Liberty Belle are there any libertarian groups active at Dartmouth?

I don't know of any, Porcupine.  However I am a med student and not an undergrad, so it's possible that there is some kind of undergrad group and I just don't know about it.  There are certainly none in the med school or grad school.  I do monitor some of the undergrad bulletins (including college R's and D's) and I've never seen anything about libertarians :-(.  Ron Paul did come and talk to the college R's though.

I bet if Telomerase gets a job at Dartmouth we could start a grad student libertarian/free stater group of some kind.

I really like that idea. We do need to know where to put the papers. We are also thinking that Kira will start taking a class there and we need to check out museums and such if they have them. :)

CROYDON who else moved to CROYDON?  Love Ron Paul but disagree on his foreign policies and foreign policy is important to me.  If he would change his foreign policy stance I could support him.  I agree with him on everything else.

Collis is a pretty good place to leave papers.  Another good place might be the libraries.  There are drop boxes for other papers (Dartmouth student papers, the Valley News) there.  If you approach the libraries and a receptionist is in view, go in and say that you publish an underground newspaper and ask if you can leave some copies for students to take if they would like.  I'm sure they would not have a problem with that.  It's always good to keep someone appraised about what you are doing so that they don't do something unwarranted like call campus security.

Anyway, Kat, would you still be interested in taking a little tour of Dartmouth campus and downtown Hanover on Sat. after lunch?  We can strategize about the best places to leave papers.

Both Keene State and Franklin Pierce have been cool with our papers.
Touring would be perfect. People could tag along and check things out. :)

So, I just got a piece of mail that said Lebanon wants to build a new junior hs... at the expense of every homeowner here.  I feel like it's inevitable that every city employee and PTA mom is going to come out and make sure this gets voted in.  Even the flier was an advertisement to come out and vote *for* the school, sent by the city of course.

Anybody who lives in Leb want to brainstorm some activism-type ideas that we could use to fight against this?  I'm definitely still too scared to withold my property taxes, but before long it will be tough to afford them.  :-\

Move to Grafton, or, at least consider buying  property and eventually settling here. It is not ideal, taxwise, but, it is more manageable as far as changing the government than Lebanon will ever be.

Are the Grafton locals, traditional Yankees? E.g. Stay out of my business and I'll stay out of yours? I know because I am one and come from a long line of them...where I moved to in Exeter its too big-city nosey, and big government for my taste, for the most part. I'm guessing since Grafton is small, than thats the case. I like what I've seen so far of it, one store...blink or you'll miss it...reminds me of the part of Mass I'm from which is the western end, which is all woods and farms mostly.
