Title: Burning Porcupine Festival
Post by: Kat Kanning on November 06, 2007, 07:35 PM NHFT
Burning Porcupine Festival:  July 14th-25th 2008
The 12 Days of Freedom
What happens in Grafton stays in Grafton
See Freestaters at their Wildest!

Anarchic campout in Free Town Grafton NH

There will be drinking, burning things, sitting around BSing, bands, toilets and showers in the woods, talking about the revolution, and of course a giant burning rodent :)  It'll be one big party.  Lloyd is going to do a naked fire dance.  Tim Condon is going to prance in a gorilla suit to do:  a circle of liberty, poetry reading, lead a Scrabble tournament, readings of patriotic documents, MC a magic show, a libertarian play.  Wookie skydiving is on the schedule.  There's a possibility of warm-weather jello wrestling.  Get your nails done by illegal nail buffers:  an unlicensed Buff-In.  Sumo-wrestling to settle any endless debates - noisemeter from the crowd to arbitrate.  Shooting and golf - with extra points for shooting golf balls out of the air.  Libertarian karaoke - full spray with firehose if you're really bad - instead of the hook aka Gong Show.  Logging competition.  Burning Porcupine moving-making contest.  Poker tournament with ounces of silver.  Fireworks illegal in most states - IED exhibition.  Burning President William.  An FSP Roast - a few minutes for each freestater notable (submit your nominations for people to be roasted) - cardboard cutouts for roasting those in absentia.  Live video from the event.  Nightly UN flag burning.

If any of these events don't actually happen:  sue us.
Blame Burning Porc planning on these irresponsibles:  Tim Condon, Bob Hull, Lloyd Danforth, the Kannings, Rich Angell

I'd like to get local farmers involved, if possible. I've found most of them open to the idea of liberty, e.g., getting the government off their back. Perhaps I can convince them to come with their wares, for sale or for sample. Oh, and while we're at it, why not homemade beer & wine? How about foraging for wild edibles? The more we learn to identify and use what we've got growing naturally, the more independent we can be. It goes without saying that I'll have my guitar and harmonicas...and I hope others will join me in jamming.

What's the Free Town Project?

Several years ago a gentleman named Zachary Bass tried to get a group of Free Staters to move into Grafton, NH, take over the town government, and turn the place into a libertarian paradise. His vision included whorehouses, etc. The townspeople got wind of the idea and it was quite a scandal... the commotion was all over the NH papers for a while.

That is one explanation of the FTP.

Well if there is some alternate explanation then please share it with us! I've always been willing to admit that my memory is not perfect.

A number of people were behind the FTP as a practical idea to move to a town that was already a good place to live and keep it that way and possibly improve it.  Bass, who never planned on moving took the idea to extremes.

Yeah right.... we all know the truth, Russell...

#1 - The first rule of Free Town Project is, you do not talk about Free Town Project.

#2 - The second rule of Free Town Project is, you DO NOT talk about Free Town Project.

#3 - If someone says "Show your ID", fails to go limp when arrested, or the beer is tapped out, the Free Town Project is over.

#4 - Two guys for every woman present. (Free Town Project needs women!)

#5 - One Free Town Project at a time.

#6 - No shirts, no shoes, no id.  Pitchforks and Strawhats are acceptable.

#7 - Free Town Project will go on as long as they have to, until they have Liberty in their Lifetime, Live Free or Die.

#8 - If this is your first night at Free Town Project, you have to attend the Circle of Liberty.

BTW, for those still unaware: Russell is the non-violent Tyler Durden.  We're still not sure who his alterego is... Some say Shorty Dawkins, some say a nameless accountant, some say Jason Sorens' good twin.  Project Mayhem, aka the FSP, is in full swing.

Should that workshop include firing up an oil burner in the open air?  You know, just to demostrate what the flame looks like, outside of a combustion chamber...

Perhaps, for environmental reasons, and to demonstrate alternative fuels, we should fire it with straight vegetable oil instead of fuel oil.  Being able to roast hot dogs near it would be an interesting possibility generated by that combination, although I expect they would cook quickly, and finding the "sweet spot" distance to hold them away from the flame might require a large crowd of gawkers to give useful suggestions...

Ah, the invisible hand at work.  Free market economics at work, indeed.

Yes, if the invisible hand moves in the correct manner, as it always does, I'm sure there will be plenty of single men who find themselves satisfied in other ways.  Remember - government doesn't create jobs or help people - the only true source is invisible hand jobs.

everyone think of something you can do to ensure this event *benefits* locals who just happen to live there.
we could start by doing no harm :)
people can enjoy music and we can give local bands a stage

if there is a fee for participation, maybe we could waive the fee for locals , i.e. folks that can prove grafton residency?
residency? .... those of us in Hobbiton welcome our brothers from every place regardless of what government currently oppresses them

If you do, I have a PDF I can send you that will be more suited for printing. That pic is a low res JPEG.
I'd buy one, but I am partial b/c it is my design.  ;D

Also, in case the gradient of the flames is too much for the printers I can change that also.

If Weird Ernie ever makes his way over to this thread ;), he will be a welcome addition to Burning Porcupine!

WE is a budding local musician, and a very good one at that.  It is my understanding that he has a pretty decent sound system which he would be willing to furnish, depending on the size of the event :)

I was raised in the southern Missouri ozarks.  Now that's hillbilly country!  They still have moonshine stills in them hills.

That was probably the coolest place I've ever been.  Everyone there was laid back and down to earth, and the place was teeming with a variety of lush plants, animals and birds.

Nah, that's in the secret private collection in the safe deposit box, along with the various recordings of the porc orgies (or as we call them, porc-gies  ) .  What happens in ManchVegas stays in ManchVegas, and The Scene in Keene stays mainly on the Screen.  The rumors about how Russel lost his other l are entirely without basis.

Hey the event is what the participants make it.

Hey Lloyd "Master of Facilities" count me and the Pres in on helping build infrastructure for this event and future events.

One activitiy we can help with prior to the event is using my Alaskan Mill to make planks and such to build cool stuff. :icon_pirat:

Probably be a good idea if somebody asked the land owner if it's still a go, so
I'll try to stop by in the next few days and ask Bob, LLoyd et al if this is still a happening thing and if they need some help.  Still alot of snow up here in the hinterlands so getting outside stuff done will have to wait until the ground makes an appearance.

I believe one of my musician friends has an excellent PA system. He is Weird Ernie on the forum. I introduced him to the forum because of his expressed interest in Burning Porcupine Festival.

I had started to dismiss BPF as sort of a "nonevent", because of the general "we're just gonna let it happen rather than plan anything" attitude of the organizers. Now that there is some actual planning underway again, I'll pitch in to help as much as possible (not with the planning, but helping to implement the plans) :)

I'll also remind Weird Ernie that this is still in the works.

That's one thing I used to excel at- hitting high notes. I don't know if I still can. Taps is usually played on a bugle which has a very limited range of notes since it has no keys. In fact, I'm not 100% certain, but I believe taps makes use of every note that a bugle can hit. We can put a constitution on the burning porcupine and I'll give taps a try.  ;D

Some have said that.  I prefer to refer to them as gender non-specific.  A simple park like table screwed and bolted like the image here, but, the tops on mine are wider than most, and made of wider, thinner boards, rounded.

We need a nickname for the farm location for Burning Porcupine.

Slab City Nursery
or some such .... maybe we can find out the name of the family that started it up.

There are nice open grassy areas, a creek, fruit trees, a few old foundations, a hill full of trees, and an older farmhouse.

I heard all about Burning Porcupine Festival from Dalebert's website. It really does sound too good to be true. About how you would read patriotic documents every night, and burn the UN flag every night, and roast stuff and eat it, and burn a giant porcupine, and everything like that.

Luke,  I intend to burn an old American flag. You DID know that the original old glory was made from HEMP cloth? You might want to stand back a bit from the smoke...Second hand smoke and all that.  ;)

I believe it's a reference to the "Burning Man" festival, which, as far as I can tell, has never been experienced first-hand by anyone on this forum.

The hedge-hog was named Spiny Norman. At the end of the sketch the hedge-hog is looking around and calling for "Dinsdaaaaale!".

From Russell:

QuoteWhat has happened so far:

March 2008 - Bob Hull supplied the location:
Hoyt Road, Grafton, NH

It has a farm house, a party field, a creek and lots
of trees.

Directions:
In Grafton ... follow the signs to Burning Porcupine
To get to Grafton ... get on US 4
To get to US 4 from the West ... get to West Lebanon,
NH
To get to US 4 from the East ... get to Concord, NH

Directions for the Walk for Liberty folks:
In Seaside, OR ... walk East for approximately one
year to Grafton, NH ... follow signs to Burning
Porcupine 2009

In April 2008 a group of people (Jay and Silent Bob,
Lloyd, Mark, Jim, Lauren, Roger, and Russell) visited
the farm and declared it to be:
"The perfect location for Burning Porcupine"

other comments included:
"Look at all that grass, you could play golf here."
"These fields will be great."

May 11th 2008 - Jim Johnson and Lauren Canario
finished a Burning Porcupine firebox and tested it
with 3 other participants (Kira, Russell, and Kat)

May 22nd, 2008 - Website started

If you want to be a part of Burning Porcupine 2008,
let someone involved know that you would like to join
the party. Your contributions can be added to this
list. :)

Perhaps there could be a hiking trip at a near-by mountain.  I certainly noticed this mountain when I was in Grafton in 2005.

Mount Cardigan - Canaan
Round-trip distance: 3 miles / Round-trip time: 2.5 hrs / Elevation: 3121'
This hike is a moderate hike well worth the effort in summer or fall. The trails from the Canaan side are the easiest route to the summit. Reach this trail by traveling to Canaan on Route 4. Turn north on Route 118 and take a right on the road to Orange. Travel straight over a bridge, and then take a right at a fork in the road. This is Grafton Road and you'll stay on this road for about a mile, when at another fork in the road, you'll turn left to the entrance for Cardigan State Park. A mile road leads to the parking and picnic areas.

The marked West Ridge Trail starts just past the picnic table area and you'll ascend at an easy pace. You'll pass two springs, and after these, keep left past the South Ridge Trail to a side climb with outlooks to the right. Soon, you'll rejoin the West Ridge Trail, and pass the Skyline Trail. Stay on the West Ridge Trail and pass a footbridge, two branch trails, and a shelter area. The route leads to beautiful views of the surrounding area.

A comment posted on my Burning Porcupine comic strip:

QuoteIs this an actual festival, or is this just a running joke, sort of like "snipe hunting?"  I don't think it would be one bit funny to drive all the way up there to find out it was a joke on "newbs" who were gullible enough to think this was real.  The comments at NHUnderground confused me, as people were questioning whether this was a joke or not in the first few pages of the thread.  I don't care of the events listed were just a gag... I just care if people will actually be there when I spend 5 hours driving up.

Some of the events are indeed jokes. The first night many crazy ideas were thrown about. But, unless we are all in jail, somebody will be at Burning Porcupine for the 12 days of freedom. :)

Some very doable events will also not happen because noone actually makes them happen. Tim mentioned a scrabble tournament ... a woman has shown interest, but if neither of them organizes it ... it just might go by the wayside.

Other events are popping up. Lex is working up a backwoods tri-quad-hept-athalon that he might actually lay out the first couple of days of Burning Porcupine. He could have pole jumping, shooting, logging, swimming ....

I believe it's a reference to the "Burning Man" festival, which, as far as I can tell, has never been experienced first-hand by anyone on this forum.

Hey guys.
yup, I plan to be up there early if needed to help out before going off to D.C. with the FSP (11th-13th) and coming back for the "Burn".  Don't leave too large of a mess since I told Bob I would stay to clean up everything

Anyone planning on going up for a few days?  Need a ride, will pay for ride.     :)

I'll give you a ride for free.  Now, just please come.  I missed you at Porcfest.

Anytime from July 14, 2008 - July 22, 2008 is great for me.  I'll be in NH that entire time and any excuse to go to Keene is good news to me.  I don't work but I have in the past.  Best to request that time off ASAP.

I think it's too late now. People will just end up walking in fertilizer. I would do it right after burning porc so that it would be ready for next time.

A Hurricane could make this memorable. The 1938 Huricane  did damage  as far as Goffstown.  I don't know if it got any further inland.

isn't that the one that knocked down all sorts of trees in Keene?
I also saw a map in the city hall showing the flooded areas from that storm today.

Turkey Pond in Concord was used to store some of those downed trees.

do you follow any signs you see that say Mobil?

One way or another the coffin will make it there. It was very handy for holding the constitution.

Five Seven campers have arrived today. We're still working on the shower.  Russell and Zim pulled the shelter out of the trees and we might be able to straighten the bent pipes out, and get it back up.

Don't they sell camping showers at Walmart? They're like bags attached to shower heads that you fill with water and hang from a tree limb or something.

overall Burning Porcupine went pretty well

We had more campers at the beginning and at the end (and still going) ... then I expected. But we had less daily commuters on Saturday and Sunday then I expected. Maybe it was the weather.

The event attracted Grafton locals, NHunderground folks, and porcupines who like to camp. We didn't have many random city folks venture out ... or too many families with kids. Now that people have a feel for what will happen next year, I would bet we get more children out there.

It turned out to be a good way to have fun and promote the idea of joining us in Grafton.

Rumor has it there will be a "fall Liberty Apple Fest" sometime in late Sept. perhaps a weekend thing, apple picking, cider making etc. This is only a rumor  I'm trying to start.  Not sure if Lloyd will be wearing wool sox for naked fire dance or not...fall nights are cool in Grafton.
