Yer a newbie. :D
newbie... :D
They covered the cement forms with hay bails and a tarp while running a 150,000 btu heater under the tarp.
Not to mention, curing concrete generates heat of its own.
They won't pour concrete in Texas when it's below freezing, but winter doesn't stop construction in NH. I'm sure there's some lower limit, but they seem to pour concrete no matter how cold it gets.

I think they add glycol or something to the cement mix.

Nice! Is that cantilevered deck a keeper, or just as scaffolding for installing the sheathing?
What's the finished square footage going to be?
I wish I'd made it. I enjoy activities like this with other porcs, but I have done so much driving since I moved to Stratham and I'm just that much further away from Keene now. I just didn't have it in me to get up bright and early and endure that drive. I should have spent the weekend in Keene and gone to Karaoke Friday night. I won't mind the drive as much if I stay there a couple days.

Hey Mark,
I don't know what kind of Audio Visual wiring your planning, but I can advise you on anything you might want to do. It's so easy to install while framing. I have speakers wired up to my PC with volume controls in each room. I can listen to music, a new audio book, or FTL while wandering from room to room, taking a shower, cooking dinner, or working on projects in the garage or backyard. It's one of the things I love about my house, and hate to give up for the move. :)
Let me know if you need any advise in setting up audio video or computer cabling.

Crazy is as crazy does, sir. ;D
Hey, it was a typical Shire winter day. Cold, clear, not wind and sunny. Actually pretty pleasant.
Although Jesus Johnson went nuts going on about how his shirt matched his overalls and then cut a big hole in the floor and cut the main beam in half. Boy is Mark gonna be pissed off. ;D
Hey... It's what the plans called for, OK... I can't see why everyone's shirt don't match their overalls.
And work boots don't forget to match your work boots to the outfit.
Ya, right Pat... Gaydar... Bweep, Bweep, Bweep!

I'll have the week of March 23rd off. If you're still working out there I'll be happy to stop by and help out on Wednesday or Thursday (I'd do both, but I'd need a place to stay and I've got cats that need to eat).

what if your metal roof was basically insulated from the ground?
lightning strikes, house burns down
if it is perfectly insulated from everything else ... the lightning would not be attracted to it
Question: Do I need lightning rods on my metal roof?
Answer: Lightning should be analyzed concerning the probability and the consequence of the strike. No measures are known that will lessen the probability of a strike, short of moving the structure to a different location. Buildings located on the top of a mountain or hill will increase the probability of a strike over those that are not. Also, the size and height of a structure will increase this probability when compared to surrounding structures, as will a building's proximity compared to smaller or shorter ones. Metal roof panels do not attract lightning more or less than any other roof covering. Two direct quotes are from MCA Technical Bulletin 1040, "the probabilities of a strike to a metal roofed structure are no more or less than any other kind of structure, as these probabilities have to do with height and size of the structure and its surroundings, rather than its construction materials."
Metal roofs do not attract lightning. The consequence of a lightning strike on a structure can be minimized if materials are electrically conductive, thus minimizing fire and explosion damage to the building and occupants. "Because metal roofing is both an electrical conductor, and a noncombustible material, the risks associated with its use and behavior during a lightning event make it the most desirable construction material available." The closing paragraph of the technical bulletin states that, "it may, in some cases, be prudent to consider lightning protection. A lightning protection system provides for a continuous conductor from earth to sky (and visa versa) so that the electrical charge is furnished an obvious path through which to flow, thereby reducing the risk to (electrically) resistive construction materials and human life."
if we had some metal leading from the roof around the house to the ground ... we would almost have one of those cages :)

Roger slipped on the ice and wrenched his neck.
I slipped on the ice and hit my head.
Dug the trench for the water line.
While laying the water line a 12" rock grazed my head, Russell saved me from the direct hit.
Roger is working on a case of trench foot, caused by a poor trash pump rented from Home Depot.
The water line is in and back filled.
Well not having a neck, I cant have sympathy for Roger.

A motorcyclist broke six ribs and a shoulder blade yesterday when a wild turkey flew into him, knocking him off his bike, according to police and the man's family.
State police said the turkey flew of the woods and struck the biker, Frank Grimes, as he cruised up Route 12 in Westmoreland. Grimes, 62, of Keene, was flown by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, where he was listed in "satisfactory" condition last night.
"From what he told me, that he remembers, he was hit on the right-hand side. He didn't know by what," said his daughter, Michelle Grimes, of West Lebanon. "He had no idea until somebody told him."
Police said they suspected Grimes suffered a head injury in the crash. His daughter said she was concerned about that possibility. She was still waiting for a radiologist to see him last night.
The turkey did not survive, according to Lu Farnsworth, who passed the bird on her way to work early yesterday afternoon. Farnsworth works at Mac's Market on Route 12 in Westmoreland.
"He was big, and he was on the side of the road with his tail feathers out," Farnsworth said. "He was a good size. Probably 30 pounds."
Grimes works for the city of Keene's water department, his daughter said. His title is backflow prevention director.
Investigators said Grimes was heading north on Route 12, toward the village of Westmoreland. The turkey zoomed out from the woods to the west side of the road, they said.
Grimes was reportedly conscious when the police arrived at the scene at 11:41 a.m. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
Michelle Grimes said her father is an experienced rider. In addition to the helmet, she said, he was wearing gloves, boots and a motorcycle jacket.
"We were surprised," she said, "because my dad's been riding motorcycles since he was 10."
Turkeys rarely fly into traffic in New Hampshire, according to Ted Walski, a New Hampshire Fish and Game biologist who specializes in wild turkeys. It's been 33 years since the state stepped in to restore the wild turkey population, and Walski said he could remember just one accident in all that time: a 1999 crash that killed a motorcyclist on Route 9 in Nelson.
Officials estimate there are more than 36,000 wild turkeys in New Hampshire. A typical adult hen weighs between 9 and 11 pounds, according to Walski. Adult male turkeys may weigh 17 to 20 pounds.
They tend to fly slowly, Walski said.
"I think most people are safe from the turkeys," he said. "Mostly, they're crossing the road on the ground. You might get a glancing blow on the bumper or something like that."

In response, Rep. Kjellman quickly began to put together her new bill, requiring turkeys to be fitted with helmets, and safety vests. Mass education camps to teach turkeys what 'right of way' is will begin as soon as the bill is signed into law. Gov. Lynch had no comment, though his wife, Dr. Susan Lynch was seen eating a turkey sandwich at lunch.
I am dancing the happy dance this evening.

I've been away from the house a little while, it was good to get back to it today.
Floor looks nice :) Now I'm working in my socks so as not to scratch it. ;D
Lauren has become a pro at the electrical stuff. 8)
Got most of the trim up, while Jim worked on the hydronic heat system. Russell made big boards into small boards most of the day, thanks.
Thanks to Jim and Lauren for driving over to take me to the job today. Above and beyond the call of duty. 8)

I wonder how deep the mud is today?
The van will disappear. :-\ ;D
ark building tomorrow
The stain and sealer have been delivered.
Anyone who wants to help with finish work is welcome.
We are also doing plumbing and sewer drains, if you have any expertice in those areas.
The house now has hot water. ;D
Tomarrow the heating system will be done.
Jim put together the pumps, valves and controls for hydronic heating... 8)
Russell and I are inhaling sawdust as we smooth all the interior surfaces for finishing.
Mark's mom came by to see the house. :)
It doesn't leak! :)
I hear you'll be able to leak there soon.
Prostate problems?
Not me, I haven't got one.

Ew! If that's what I think it is, I want that. How hard is it to add that to an existing wood stove in a house? I'm looking at houses now and I'll prolly want to make some mods once I find something.
The Most Valuable Player Award goes to Jim Johnson.
Without Jim this show would be nowhere.
Of course, it was really nice that he got another orbital sander and vacuum so I don't end up with beige lung from breathing sawdust. ;D
But, of course, he got the bigger model with a longer hose... bastard, is always makin' me feel inferior. :( ;D
Thanks Jim.

You would be looking for a house that needs new flooring. When you put in hydronic heat you get to put in new subfloor.

Heating the baseboard is baseboard heating (cold feet).
Heating air and blowing it around is forced air heating (cold feet).
Heating the floor, that's nice, that's hydronic heating (warm feet). ;)
Yeah, I know, but I'm just wondering about that gutter thing I had when I was in Boston. It seemed pretty good. Seems like it won't dry the air as badly and it also seems like a good way to distribute heat from a fire and use the heat more efficiently rather than send most of it up the chimney.

Don't worry. It's not contagious. ;D
No anyway, I'm just saying that porc manor had a nice wood stove but it only heated one area of the house and I've heard of liquid systems that pump the heat around the house. I think the idea is to distribute it evenly and also grab a lot more of the heat before it goes up the chimney so it's more efficient. Liquid distribution seems like it's better than blowing hot air around, both in terms of working better because liquid heats up so readily and also because I suspect it doesn't dry out the air so badly. There was a sort of gutter type baseboard with a slit in the top in my Boston apt when I lived there a little while and apparently it had some pipe where hot liquid flowed through it. The gutter was just there presumably so you don't touch the pipe with a bare foot and burn yourself.

They're not that effective when you're being sprayed in the face with the stuff. They're really just designed for when the dust's floating about in the air.
hmmm taking heat from fire with water and distributing it throughout the building ... that is a new concept .... I wonder if PatK or PatMc know anything about that ;)

Don't tell Jim that, then he wouldn't buy me a cool gadget to play with!
But seriously, the vacuum pulls air through holes in the sandpaper and virtually no dust in the air and all over everything including us. Probably have dump 10 gallons of sawdust from the vacuums. No more eyes, lungs and sinuses full of irritant.
Alot less clean up after also.

i know noone here gives a shit less for my input, but...
hydronic heating is ANY heat transmission via hot water...baseboard or radiant
RADIANT floor heating can be done w/ elec. or hot water..or as the romans w/ flue gas from wood or coal fires channeled through floor cavities....hydronic radiant heat can be installed in walls & ceilings as well
fyi
