Title: Keene Freedom Fest: Spring 2008 - 4/19, Noon-3p, Railroad Sq.
Post by: FTL_Ian on March 03, 2008, 03:51 PM NHFT
Free Minds TV and FreeKeene.com present the Spring 2008 edition of Keene Freedom Fest!  Join us for an afternoon of pro-Liberty outreach, socializing, and gambling!

4/19, Noon-3p, Railroad Square in Keene (the small park adjacent to 82 Main St.)

Food and drinks will be available via nearby vendors like Armadillo's Burritos, King's Garden Chinese, and Amicci's Pizza.

The following organizations/people are confirmed to be attending the event:

The following liberty oriented groups are being approached to be included in the event:
Liberty Scholarship Fund, Marijuana Policy Project, Fully Informed Jury Association

These groups are unavailable this time:  Students for Sensible Drug Policy, Law Enforcement against Prohibition, Keene Citizens Government Review

Can you think of any other organizations that should be invited?

Unlike last year, this time the event will not be requesting permission from the government people.  From what I understand, as long as we are not obstructing people's ability to move through the park, no one should be arrested.  Those who are gambling will obviously be at risk, however.

FYI:  We do have four feet of table space available for those who do not have their own table space.

I'm thinking that instead of doing Operation Politically Homeless this time I'm going to try striking the root by using Marc Stevens' "World's Shortest Political Quiz":

"Should a service or product be provided at the threat of violence?"

I am thinking about having a white board with hashmarks to tally how many people answered what way.

I will also have hundreds of these on hand to give away:

If Free Minds TV begins promoting this event immediately, that should help get people to turn out.  Once all of the attending organizations are ironed out, I will send a news release out to my Keene media list.  I can always call "Talkback" the morning of and get a free plug.  Gardner Goldsmith has offered to interview me.

How else can we promote?  On Keene State College campus?  Is school in session that week?

Is there a side thread having to do with the gambling game? Who is organizing that? What game is being played? Do you have or need poker chips, or do you want it to look more "underground" like by having federal money being thrown out onto the table?

I will go there to talk about it. Seems like they are not discussing specifics. Either they don't think they need to yet, or don't think they need to at all.

Nah, I was thinking maybe games, food, stuff of that nature.  Possibly a fund raiser for the Liberty Scholarship Fund.

Well, we know there will be games (gambling).  If someone wants to sell food, that would be fine, however they will be in competition with the nearby food outlets that I mentioned.

As far as I know, Keene State College is in session that week. It wouldn't hurt to make flyers for billboards not only at KSC, but also around town.

If anyone has a good idea for a promo to be run on Cheshire TV that couldn't hurt either.

Since you are looking for something to be delegated to you, would you like to take charge of the fliers and then perhaps ask Sean to cobble together a quick 15 second promo from last year's footage?

Puke has design experience.  Perhaps he would be willing to build the flyer and we could go around and put them up.  It would be useful to create a database of possible flyer locations, for future use as well.

I suppose that it will be printed in B&W. If that's the case I'll hold back the color.

Perhaps add Saturday to the date, so people don't have to check their calendars.

Also, we plan to do three of these per year so I don't know if "second annual" is correct in that case.

Maybe add each exhibiting group's URL somewhere close to their name (under in small font would work). That way people could still access some resources, even if they don't go.

OK, added 'Saturday' and changed the annual thing to 'Spring 2008'.

I don't want to put URL's on there. That would be a cluster-fuck of information. It's best to keep it simple.

I've seen some flyers and ad's that are just crammed with text. A person is going to make a decision to look at the flyer in the first couple seconds. It has to be readable at a glance as they walk by. Too much text and the info gets lost in the forest of letters.

I like it.  :)

I like that it is half a page. The full page size ends up getting tossed on the ground, often. Something that fits in your pocket is idea.

If you were interested in printing both sides the backside could have the text that you don't want to "busy up" the front with.

We did palm cards once that had info on what to do in a pullover/protect your rights on the reverse and our message on the front. Made it small enough to fit in a pocket and folks would keep it for a reference.

Anyway, nice job Sir Puke.  8)

Elizabeth just noticed that attendees is misspelled.  :)

Personally I would rather it say "games" than "gambling." Maybe it's me, but I'm trying to act like what we're doing should be completely, unquestionably free from regulation, and the word "gambling" has a bit of negative ring to it in society. It isn't a big deal though. Thoughts?

I don't know what's more likely to attract people. When people see "gambling", I think they will show up expecting to be betting lots of money on wheel spins or something. "Games" means that there will be games to play, and if a penny changes hands, it's part of the game.

Someone asked on FTL if we could live broadcast this event. It's not impossible. Downtown Keene is supplied with wireless internet. It might be able to reach to railroad square. If that's the case, all you need is a portable computer and a camera, and maybe power to keep it running past battery life. Should I look into this? I don't mind using my equipment, which could probably broadcast for about 90 minutes if the connection was strong enough before batteries ran out. As long as someone was there to pick it up for me if I was for some reason unable to return home.

If you want to do so, I doubt there will be enough viewers to justify it.  There also won't be much of interest to broadcast.  Makes more sense to tape some footage and edit a package for FMTV / Youtube.

Railroad Square in Keene has both wireless access, and electrical outlets -- so you wouldn't need to rely on a battery.

I like the idea of a live broadcast, especially with the potential for a civdis arrest(s) happening... if we plan to live broadcast the event, and spread the word in advance, we could greatly increase our audience.

As long as someone was there to pick it up for me if I was for some reason unable to return home.

Railroad Square in Keene has both wireless access, and electrical outlets -- so you wouldn't need to rely on a battery.

I once heard that while there's outlets, the power isn't turned on unless someone has signed up for an event in the area, which we haven't. I will try to test my setup this weekend, and will post a link in this thread if I feel like a live feed is viable. Maybe we could even have 2 cams, but that's getting a bit overboard. One step at a time coco.

Hmm... I used the outlets a number of times last summer and fall, before the weather turned cold. My laptop battery is so far gone that it only lasts for a minute or so without auxiliary power, and I never had a problem accessing the electricity at Railroad Square.

Tell you what... you plan the live broadcast, and I will bring an alternative power source just to be sure :icon_pirat: 8)

Ian, you understand and appreciate the difference between "argumentation" and "discussion" -- and the importance of avoiding the former if the intent is to win hearts and minds.

I am therefore glad that the gaming will not be intentionally an act of Civ Dis. For the vast majority of the general population -- even those who score in the top quadrant of the Nolan Chart -- if they see the police arresting someone, their first impression is that the person must be doing something "bad"

Civ Dis has its place.
That place is not at a festival intended to introduce people to the freedom-loving community.

While I certainly wouldn't prevent anyone from broadcasting live, I will once again reiterate that I believe that an event where people will primarily be standing around talking with one another will not make for very interesting live broadcast content.

People watch some pretty boring things online since Justin.tv came out.

Anyway, I was talking to a few guys I may or may not play poker with each week, and at least one of them says he plans to be there to play for pennies. It's getting down to the time when we should be making sure we have tables and chairs, and decide exactly what is going on. As I have said before, I will come prepared with everything necessary to play a poker game, besides a table unless I need to find one, and all anyone else has to do is come with 2 quarters to buy a roll of pennies.

The same building Cheshire TV is in? The new Masonic Hall is a different building on upper Washington Street I think. But CTV sure has a lot of spare chairs in racks there. I don't know the process of borrowing some. Should I ask Lee, if he is around when I stop by the studio tomorrow?

I spoke with L. Perkins today. He is not authorized to lend those chairs; they belong to the library. A woman at the library named Nancy is in charge of them, but he guessed that there's no reason she would let them be taken out. I don't think we want to go the renting route, since there should be other solutions.

I will keep thinking on it, unless someone else can commit to bringing seating.

I'm with you Ian -- that's a tough call. On the one hand, there would certainly be a ready made audience; otoh, it has a strong potential to make us come off as parasitic (mooching off another event), not to mention disruptive, if arrests are made.

I'm inclined to think this is a case where the potential negativity of the publicity outweighs the publicity itself. Too bad the scheduling conflict wasn't discovered sooner.

Ian, if you still plan on calling the event organizer to work out a deal, may I suggest that you are completely candid with her regarding the planned illegal gambling table as an act of civ dis, along with the possibility of a minor scene arising out of activists being arrested, and the arrests being filmed. That way, there are no surprises -- and if a deal can be arranged with that understanding, the potential for negative publicity is nipped in the bud.

I will also have access to a few more chairs if we need. I hope to come around 10:30 - 11, see if I can cover a picnic table with a poker top. If not, I can come home and get a table. Two non-freestaters have told me they will come and play. Players can buy pennies on the spot, and blinds (for anyone who knows poker) will be .01/.02 No Limit. We can double that later in the day if the situation calls for it, but with each person starting at around 50 cents, 1/2 would be standard.

Should I bring my camera? I'm leaning toward yes, but I'm trying to carry as little as possible on my person. Also, who might be available to hold player's keys and possibly temporarily take care of their cars in a worst case scenario?

The Fest was mentioned tonight on Keene No-Spin. Not too much. They just made a note that we won't have a permit while the earth day folks do. Rumor is that the police are already aware of what's going on, and they don't care: they don't want conflict. Perfect as far as I'm concerned.

There was no incident. An officer actually was engaged with Ian in conversation about the "products at the threat of violence." He first said that he agrees that everyone should live their lives how they want without harming anyone, and then called LEAP ridiculous. He said he's against prohibition and that drugs should be illegal (He didn't know what prohibition meant?) Once we clarified he made it perfectly clear that he is against drug legalization.

Anyway, that same cop was at the festival all day. There was a much bigger Earth Day fest going on at the same time. He was most definitely in the area while we played poker. In fact, another man at the park was arrested by him on an outstanding warrant, but the cop didn't even come close to that poker table while the game was going on.

Interested in what way? In playing, or just the fact that we were there? I would have loved to keep playing but people were getting sunburned and about half the players left to do other things.

I have a good one (not Wal-mart crap) that I'll be taking to Porcfest.  I could leave it with someone in NH b/t Porcfest and Burning Porcupine if you are going to do another Freedom Fest b/t the two events.

Hello Kat.  I took it that you were replying to my comment in this thread (http://nhunderground.com/forum/index.php?topic=13743.0 ), though I may be wrong.  You likely know of this stuff already.  I'll post it for those not in the loop.

Reasonable people can disagree but I think a place that offers poker, craps, blackjack, roulette, horse betting, dog betting, has restaurants and is owned by a gaming company can be called a casino.

You don't need much sun to get it and Vitamin D can be obtained from other sources. Even if you never get cancer, the sun damages and ages your skin. Most people don't realize their skin has taken damage unless they get a painful sunburn, but any amount of tan is the result of some degree of sun damage. Of course, a lot of sun at once resulting in a burn, increases the risk of cancer. That's particularly true if it happens in youth when your skin is still growing. That's one of the highest risk factors for skin cancer- repeated sunburn in your youth. Some people have more melanin in their skin naturally and the damage is slower, but it's true to a varying extent for everyone. Fair-skinned people are particularly vulnerable to it. People always comment about how I look young for my age. I avoid sun exposure and when I absolutely must be in it, I take a shower in sunscreen.

I need to point out a gratitude I believe to Coconut.  It seems you organized the gaming even though I think it was Ians' idea.  You got some people involved that I had not seen before.  Good networking.  Congratulations.
A while back Zaphar asked if it was okay for natives to NH to NHfree.  I was surprized by the question at first, then got to thinkin' that maybe we/I have not done a good job getting the natives involved.  But your networking is exactly the reason we need as many involved as possible.  This cannot be just a movement by a bunch of former outsiders.   :)

While I realize the penny ante poker violates the law it would have been a better example to have larger denominations bet.  The NH charity gambling laws place a $2 limit on any single bet so the police would be a lot less likely to turn a blind eye to a gambling event that exceeds that limit.  The current businesses that operate the poker and gambling franchises in this state would also be a lot more likely to pressure the police into action since the demonstration would offer better "action" to participants.

Still, job well done, especially to those people willing to put their buts in the seats with the police standing there.

I appreciate the credit. I think it was Puke's idea to begin with, but I sorta took it upon myself to organize gameplay since I have experience in it. I certainly couldn't have done anything without everyone else who was willing to play though. Menno, Puke, a traveler named Mike, and the two guys I invited, Benn and Duard. Tim was willing but we sorta lost players by that point.

That was just a buyin. People would exchange their dollars for pennies. We can talk about in the future using nickels instead, though the higher we go, the more I feel we need to have committed to doing it.

Yeah, speaking of that, both your salads and Ian's Chinese food looked more appetizing than the burrito I got at Armadillo's. It wasn't horrible, but it was kind of dry and boring and that place has been really slow both times I've gone there. Next time I'll know better. I'm giving Armadillo's a thumbs down. Dale! How DARE you berate my favorite burrito joint??! :o     ... ;D

Seriously though, I absolutely love their steak burrito... though I have noticed that it is considerably tastier when certain employees make it, than others. Unfortunately, the "good" ones were not on duty last Saturday. And of course they were slow -- they were coping with an endless line of hungry folks from the two coinciding festivals taking place right outside their door.

...and don't forget, Armadillos is the only restaurant in town that displays a large NHfree poster in the men's room! :)

Therefore, I hereby cancel out your thumbs down with my own thumbs up... as a happy repeat customer of Armadillos! ;D 8)
