Title: A Mathematician's Lament
Post by: Vitruvian on March 09, 2008, 10:30 AM NHFT
In this article, Paul Lockhart, once a professional mathematician and now a school teacher, eulogizes the love of mathematics in children and adults alike and hopes for its resurrection:

The author of A Mathematician's Lament has a (much shorter) follow-up in response to some of the criticism he received:

Lockhart's Lament - The Sequel (http://www.maa.org/devlin/devlin_05_08.html)

The original piece is long but I believe a "must-read" for homeschool parents and educators.  Thanks V for posting that original link.  It is a great analysis of what's wrong in the standard math curriculum and ideas for alternatives.  Lockhart seems to advocate approaching math more like art with a focus on discovery and beauty.

Reading the first link reminded me of this piece I read on teaching science.
