Title: I kinda like Keene!
Post by: Mellamo on May 01, 2008, 08:25 PM NHFT
Hi, I'm a 19 year old freestater from SD. And guess what? I'm in NH right now!! I'm traveling to Manchester and I'm planning on staying in Porc Central, but I spent the day in Keene today and I think I like it. I'd consider myself to be a voluntaryist/freemarketeer/ancap and politics doesn't interest me very much, so it seems like Keene is the place to be for me, philosophically at least.

Of course I'm going to check out Manchester before I make any decisions, but Keene is very interesting.

Well, I don't have much else to say... Just thought I'd say "hi"!

Oh, and I ate at Panera Bread today, in my FTL T-shirt of course.  8) Too bad Julia wasn't there. Oh well, I enjoyed the sandwich anyway.

Why do you like Keene in comparison to other cities?

Well, it's the first place I've been in NH... so I have nothing to compare it to. I'm just saying that I like it. It also seems to be a good place for nonpolitical people, from what I've been reading.

I've been to the other places, and Keene is the best!  Best place, best people!

Julia was there till 4p today, FYI.

So, are you just visiting?

You should have let Ian and I know you were coming. We try to make time for listeners who visit for the FSP. Especially AMPers ;D

You should come to the MVP gathering this Saturday, May 3rd in Manchester at Murphy's Taproom.  Your rommates at 412 Central will know about it.  Come on out and meet some fellow Free Staters.  We look forward to seeing you there.  11:00 a.m., 494 Elm St.

Yeah, we're on our way to Manchester and we just took a break in Keene today. Maybe I'll be back, though. I'd just need to find a place to stay.

This Saturday I'll be attending my aunt's friend's wedding, so I'll have to catch the next one. I might go to the Social Sunday thing in Keene this week though.

Yeah, I traveled here with my aunt, so I'm hanging out with her for the next week or so. Since I'm with her I'm taking it easy with the FSP stuff for the moment, but she seems to be down with it. She's open-minded and rational, but she just hasn't heard of libertarianism before. We had a very nice discussion in the car.  :)

But when I'm with her I'm kind of in tourist mode.

Welcome Home.
Keene is a pretty, relatively quiet city.  Bigger than most towns, but has most of the big city amenities.  It is the smallest city I have ever lived in.  I liked Manchvegas, and landed there at porc central initially.  Moved because the activism here was more my cup of tea.
If you are concerned about interupting anyones schedule, I wouldn't worry too much.  Many of us meet every sunday at Vendetta in downtown Keene.  Even if you are visiting, make a new topic announcing it, and those that have the time off may try to meet you.  I didn't have to start getting ready for work till about 3pm, so I would have been happy to meet up with you.   :)

...wait until Antarctica melts, plenty of seafood in Colorado then.  ;D

FYI - Keene is on the lower west corner of NH, maybe a short couple of hours from the ocean.
It's a state college town and seems pretty nice, never lived there but I'd imagine jobs are easier to come by there then say up here in the hills of GRAFTON.  We Graftonites sometimes hook up the mule team and venture down to the flat lands of NH for provisions sich as beans, bacon, flour and store bought foofarah.
Anywhere in NH is pretty close to other parts of NH, relatively speaking and it's all good.
The more liberty minded people we get...cool.

I like Keene alot!

My first impression with the people was seeing a dad walk into Friendly's with two kids, a boy and a girl (have I mentioned I HATE kids?). They walked over to a vending machine with an "Out of order" sign on it and the girl asked what it meant. The dad read the words off, and she said something politely to "I understand the words, but what does it mean?". The father explained what it meant and the son said "What a rip off!" and they all laughed.

A person (a dad, at that!) actually explaining something to their kid? Wow. Around here the only explanation is "Don't touch that!" and when asked why "Cuz I said so".

On my way into Price Choppers I noticed a license plate that said +GUNS+.

I've been in Maryland for two and a half years and I've still not found two things I like... Keene did it twice in a few hours.

I love Keene. It's small but has plenty of places to shop and eat. Not much in the way of clubs, but I don't do that anyway.
The theater sucks, but there is a great video store.

I'd call the town very Norman Rockwell-esque.

I've heard The Colonial is very nice.  The Key Road Cinemas are nothing to write home about.  Brattleboro's Kipling Cinemas is nicer.

The movie theater sucks?
I grew up with that place having small, broken, slippery chairs. The recent (past 2 years) seat renovation made it great. :)  Poor me has nothing for comparison.

As far as strip bars, the zoning rules apparently say it has to be X distance from schools, playgrounds ,etc etc, and that it's not financially viable for any adult joints to open up because of the rules.

Actually my friend and his dad built a theater in their attic about 4 years ago. Complete with a remote controlled screen, LCD projector, old theater seats, a couch, a massaging chair, and a refrigerator.

My response exactly.  When I was living in New York City, there was a video store that started showing classic movies in their back room at night.  They picked really fantastic movies and drew enough of an audience to expand.  Soon they stopped using a VCR and started actually projecting films.  As the popularity increased they made enough money to install a bigger screen, real theater seating, and eventually they had a sweet little indie movie theater operation going.

Nowadays with blueray technology, doing something like this would be even more feasible.

If I had my own theater I'd ban kids and sell booze.
I'd also have a strict noise policy.
That's basically why theaters suck, too many assholes.

You mean like they have in Germany?

I first saw "Red Dawn" in a theater in Germany. They had a bar in the back, and the seats in front of you had a shelf where you could put your drinks. [and Red Dawn was so simple I didn't need sub-titles  ;D]

Awe man. I'd love a good Cinema and Drafthouse. They have Chunky's in Nashua and I've enjoyed it both times I went there. First time was when I just drove by while exploring Nashua after Porcfest and it caught my attention. I wandered in and saw Shrek, still a new release for $7, and had a couple beers served to me while sitting in a comfy leather rocking chair.

Not even when it was created. Whenever these themes or characters are Re-popularized on TV or in theaters there is a resurgence in interest in them.
I remember thinking that Wizard Of Oz and all of those nifty Disney Cartoons were made just for tykes like my self, but, they were made for my parents generation. Disney rolled them out every five years or so to snag a new bunch of kids.
