Title: Stolen Bike
Post by: Coconut on May 20, 2008, 10:31 PM NHFT
My beloved bicycle was swiped today from my parent's garage. It a red GT Aggressor, says "Aggressor" down the side. Unique features to mine (listed in order from least modifiable):

Metal studed pedals, not the plastic ones it comes with when bought - aka it has hard plastic, with small shiny studs on each side.
The rear reflector is an LED light (even if the perp took this off, then it would be missing a rear reflector)
The handlebars have a mount for a headlight. No light is attached, just the small mount, with electrical tape underneath to help it hold on.
There was a cable and lock around the seat, but that could be easily removed by the perp.

It was taken from Pine Street, which is off Washington St fairly close to downtown. Let me know if you see an abandoned bike or something that matches the description that I should check out. 603-313-4421

I'll keep an eye out.  That sucks  :-\

An abandoned bike might get taken to the green bikes on Keene State campus.  You might ask them.

Then they'll paint it green  :o
I think they might be closed for the summer anyway.

Should I report it to police? That probably gives me the best chance of getting it back, but it's unregistered, and I can see the office e-mail now: "CopWatcher asks our help to find his bike."

Bikes prolly get stolen all the time.  This is a bike friendly town, and it would be hard to find your bike under ideal conditions.  I may be better to buy another one.  Yard sales are out.  Andys will be happy to sell you a new one.  (go on the weekdays, hes not as busy).
Curious, how did you lock it up.  I send my cable through both wheels, and through the frame in one spot.  The only thing they can steal is my brake cables, and my seat, and my lights.

This one was from Andy's, and if I need a new one, that's where I'm going. I just hate to go through the problems again of a new bike (Things coming loose, needing adjustments every week). As well as getting a speech from Mr. Anderson about proper locking methods.

And yes, it was unlocked in my parents garage. It looks like the door was open and it was in plain sight, but this is the same place I've kept my bike since I was 7. Doors open or closed: never has it been taken. It just wasn't something I worried about.

If you want the police involved. I wouldn't, but you might.

You could do a ride along and search for your bike while eating donuts. :)

You think it's an organized group shipping bikes out of the area for resale? Possible. Anyone smart would get it out of here as quick as possible.

In my experience in Keene, most bike thefts are opportunistic "I'm too lazy to walk from A to B but here's a free bike" things.  These bikes usually end up tossed by the side of the street, or in a yard, or in a river.

Next common are bike choppers.  They steal bikes and cannibalize them, either to sell the parts or upgrade their own ride.  They usually sell the parts to friends or acquaintances, I haven't encountered any organized bike chopping "rings."  You may be walking down the street and see a bike with your front fork and shocks driving by, or your custom seat or whatever.

Possible, but not that economical, someone took it to flip it for drugs.

I believe bikes are "required" to be registered in Keene, but many (most?) are not...it's free and the ONLY thing we've ever used bike registrations for is to return found / chopped bikes to their owners.  I do not recall, ever, anyone getting any kind of ticket for not having a bike registered.  Just makes it easier for us to return it (or some of it!) to you.

Ironically, I just printed Keene Police bike registration labels 2 months or so ago. I work in a label factory and KPD ordered some.

When I did a background check on myself, the only thing that appeared from my youth was my "required" bike registration.  :(

You'd be shocked what a crackhead will do for another rock.  It may not be economical, but they aren't too concerned with that.  They will steal stuff and either pawn it or give it to the dealer, and in return will get a low trade-in value of drugs in return.

Common ways to pay for drugs absent cash include trading your own stuff (PS3s, etc), theft, robbery, and providing sex to the dealer & his friends.

More likely than coke.  Maybe meth or crack.

The best I'd be able to do is get a picture of the same model from the bike store. As far as I know, I took no pictures.
