FYI, if you buy the Flobots CD at Newbury Comics, they'll give you a 45" of this song for free (I'll bet some of you whippersnappers don't even know what that means :-\ ).

Does it have to be a "song"? The Doll's Girl Anachronism (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO5APfKnR50), if it must, but if not it's hard to beat Ed Alleyne-Johnson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvv0lzjQQ8s), and I think I'll go with that regardless. A distant second would be Emilie Autumn in one of her violin solos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8fmI66-Bho).
I'd sell both my adoptive and biological mothers to see Ed Johnson and Les Claypool get together for one night of wicked improv.

been a busy 5 minutes for ya then huh? ;)
cool change
Eh, five minutes, five days, or five years? Ed and Emilie are all time favorites, but I was listening to the Dolls when I spotted this. Amanda leads me to think of Emilie, and Emilie on her violin to think of Ed, and Ed's skill on the electric violin to think of Claypool's must-have-made-a-deal-with-the-devil level of ability on the bass.
I failed to mention Buckethead, though he was in my thoughts as well. It's fun to spend five minutes attempting to imagine the vomit-inducing dissonant harmony that would ensue when such talents are pooled, and I can't even begin to imagine what kind of stage show they'd come up with. Hallucinogens would be made obsolete. :o
The last five minutes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI9D4q8pLuw&feature=related), brought to you by the "mind" of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEuKiqnnOPM) creature.

And how, man. I'm tellin' ya, Claypool is a gods damned genius on that Thompson four stringer. He plays like a man who loves his instrument, and whose instrument truly loves him in return. Speaking of symmetric groovage, did they happen to play Damn Blue Collar Tweakers at any of those shows? If you're not in it, and I was after about ten seconds of watching the crowd's reaction, and hanging at the back, the only thing you can see is a sea of human bodies, heads and arms wall to wall, all rollin' in perfect harmony with that man's thunder.
I'm half deaf from all the concerts I've attended, and theirs are always the most memorable. Primus fuckin' sucks, man. ;D

I don't care for glitzy things or a fancy neighborhood
Glamour games or plastic fame or the king of Hollywood
I don't need flamboyant things or a top hat on my head
Modeling for magazines and to be a debonair

I saw someone mention the song Elenor Rigby. As a HUGE Beatle fanatic that song is truely a masterpiece of great classical music. Listen to the composition of the strings and the complex melodies. Hell, that has Beetoven/Bach written all over it.
It was after hearing that song that I started exploring classical music (Mozart, Bach etc) and a whole other side of artistry came into my world.
There will never be a musical band that can compare to The Beatles. Their contributions to music and art and their personal dedications to improving and freeing the world are like none other. I only wish John Lennon was still alive as he would be leading the masses against our tyrannical government.

Oasis fans would disagree! *Cowers behind his rotten tomato shield* ;D
Though sad to disagree, the Beatles success was largely due to corporate profiteering. Genius was recognized where so often it is not, and was exploited. Something was said, but it was lost in corporate translation. What positivity did the Beatles contribute that Dylan did not?

I am not familiar with Oasis and I am unsure that they started a trend that drove and dictated a certain style of music or thathey changed a billion peoples minds or if they initiated the fashion world of clothing, haircuts. glasses etc. John Lennon alone and his work was the major reason why the Vietnam war ended. I do not know any other musical band that had a WORLDWIDE effect such as they had. And sure Dylan did a great bunch of work as did many other artists of those times. Lennon even admitted Dylan inspired his writings and Dylan said The Beatles inspired his. This was a era that was different than today where now there is such a huge melting pot of musical artists. Now it is almost impossible for one band to take the topdog position. Today there are a lot of very good bands but there is such a large diversity that its scattered all over the place. Back then, it was a bit more funneled down and distilled and the message was distinct and clear for the entire world to see. Everyone knew of The Beatles.
Corporate profiteering? I have to disagree as The Beatles were attacked most often by the corporate media and Big Gov. They devised a "stamp out the Beatles" propaganda after John declared that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. They labeled it a British Invasion and announced that "rock and roll must go". Big Gov was all over John Lennon and wanted him deported because of his political activism and ability to rally the younger generation. The media continually attacked Yoko Ono vicously and they busted both John and Paul on seperate weed charges. Yes the Beatles were a money machine for profiteers but that wasn't why they were popular. The Beatles needed no one to get to the top of the top. And like all good artists The Beatles would have done their work even without all the riches. Hell they stopped touring because they hated it. Do you know much money they truned down from not touring? John did free benefit concerts as did George Harrison when he went to Bangladesh. They didnt need promoters and corporate whores to send their message and continue doing great work.

I watched the vid you posted and heres my thoughts. A lot of music today has the tone of being very angry. The lyrics, the scorning voice synthesizers, the repetitous drowning beat, even the dress attire, and the colors and the stage presentation. Now compare that to the sixties. whoa huh?
Musical art should always be a reflection of the time and era. I see that same type of angryness in rap and although I dislike it I have to respect it for what it is....and that is that young black kids are angry and frustrated and need to scream about it. The blacks have been shit on for years and it still continues (and its getting worse) and IMO that is how black music evolved into rap. Hell, rock and roll was started by the black slavery and their displeasure with their white masters. But really, what I see is today is that they are all frightened. Its a natural human response to being backed into a corner with little if any options. In the sixties it was completley a 360 as the opposite approach was tried. IMO neither did much good because we are still in the same damn boat, maybe worse than ever.

I love this band. This particular song reminds me of my housemates and me, known as the "Albany Terrorists" when we lived at party central on Albany Terrace north of Berkeley. We got a note of 30 days notice, in the middle of a semester, and got the ol' heave ho. I had to give up my puppy, which was one of the most heart-breaking experiences of my life. I swore I'd never have another dog until I was in a position where no one could ever take it away from me, and I haven't had one since. This is actually my primary motivation for wanting to buy a house. Maybe I'll get a puppy for Christmas. :love4:

Staind - Raining Again
Side note pertaining to Staind and my "buy that CD" policy. I'm opposed to DRM and like having physical product in my hand for many reasons. I tend to download a LOT of songs online, and if any album has 3 songs on it that I like, I purchase the album to justify the download and aim to see a concert to support the artist.
With that policy in mind, Staind's latest CD has two songs on it that I like, and an acoustic version of one of their most famous songs. I'm torn if I should drop the eleven bucks on the CD or not. :P

OK, I'm violating my own "not before Thanksgiving" rule, since they already broadcast Steven Colbert's Xmas special and it was freakin' hilarious. If they show it again, try to catch it (unless you don't have the ability to laugh at Christianity and Judaism, in which case, I suggest you skip it ;) ). I'm probably going to buy it on DVD.

holy smokes! Mojo Nixon is the band I was talking about in the 'favorite songs' thread (I couldn't remember the band's name, but that's them!) They don't have one of my favorite songs, but it's weird to find that exact band in here right after I was trying to figure out the name of it... freaky!
I guess my favorite song of the last five minutes (haven't checked the rest of the thread to see if anyone posted this one yet as their favorite) is this Christmas song - was talking to my son about this xmas song after we heard the 12 Pains of Christmas:

East Bound and Down
U-Haul wheels a-rollin'
And we're gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go
And a short time to git there
I'm eastbound, now
Watch this Porcupine run!
It's New Hampshire or bust
California can eat my dust
Let it all hang out
Cuz we got a run to make.
This ol' government is abusive
And sweet liberty seems elusive
But we'll get it back
No matter what it takes....
East Bound and Down
U-Haul wheels a-rollin'
And we're gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go
And a short time to git there
I'm eastbound, now
Watch this Porcupine run!
I posted this one a week before I left California.

Quote
Couldn't improve on this if I tried (and yes, as a matter of fact, I WAS born in Rhode Island)
-----------------------------------------
The Last Resort
She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea
She heard about a place people were smilin'
They spoke about the red man's way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide
Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can't wait to tell you all,
what it's like up there
And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high
Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do
Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought them
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea
You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign:"Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name
of God
And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
Stand up and sing about
What it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

La Campanella (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Campanella) (meaning "The Little Bell") is the nickname given to the final movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, because the tune was reinforced by a little handbell.
Blind Japanese Pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii plays La Campanella at Cliburn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9MlN-ZudKo#)
Franz Liszt used the tune and wrote various pieces based on it, the most famous of which is the third of six Grandes Etudes de Paganini ("Grand Paganini Etudes"), S. 141, of 1851,known also as La Campanella. (This piece is a revision of an earlier version from 1838, when the set was called Études d'exécution transcendante d'après Paganini, S. 140). The later set is a revision of the earlier set, and every piece in the set is based on themes by Niccolò Paganini.
The etude is played at a brisk pace and studies right hand jumping between intervals larger than one octave, sometimes even stretching for two whole octaves within the time of a sixteenth note, at Allegretto tempo. As a whole, the etude can be practised to increase dexterity and accuracy at large jumps on the piano, along with agility of the weaker fingers of the hand. The largest intervals reached by the right hand are fifteenths (two octaves) and sixteenths (two octaves and a second). Sixteenth notes are played between the two notes and the same note is played two octaves or two octaves and a second higher with no rest. No time is provided for the pianist to move the hand, thus forcing the pianist to avoid tension within the muscles. Fifteenth intervals are quite common in the beginning of the etude, while the sixteenth intervals appear twice, at the thirtieth and thirty-second measures.
However, the left hand studies about four extremely large intervals, larger than the right hand. For example, after the Più mosso, at the seventh measure, the left hand makes a sixteenth-note jump of just a whole-tone above three octaves. The etude also involves other technical difficulties, e.g. trills with the fourth and fifth fingers. The pianist will normally try to limit trills with the fourth and fifth, for easier endurance.
Video sucks but the music has a really cool vibe...

The Ballad of Bill Hubbard ........ Roger Waters
Quote"Two things that have haunted me most are the days when I had to collect the paybooks; and when I left Bill Hubbard in no-man's-land."
"I was picked up and taken into their trench. And I'd no sooner taken two or three steps down the trench when I heard a call,
'Hello Razz, I'm glad to see you. This is my second night here,' and he said
'I'm feeling bad,' and it was Bill Hubbard, one of the men we'd trained in England, one of the original battalion. I had a look at his wound, rolled him over; I could see it was probably a fatal wound. You could imagine what pain he was in, he was dripping with sweat; and after I'd gone about three shellholes, traversed that, had it been...had there been a path or a road I could have done better.
He pummeled me, 'Put me down, put me down, I'd rather die, I'd rather die, put me down.' I was hoping he would faint. He said 'I can't go any further, let me die.' I said 'If I leave you here Bill you won't be found, let's have another go.' He said 'All right then.' And the same thing happened; he couldn't stand it any more, and I had to leave him there, in no-man's-land."

Gregg Yows - "Revolution Is You"
You pull yourself up
But they keep ...bringin you down
Are they gonna bail you out?
Or just, run you a-round
They said you should have a house
It's the – 'merican way
Dollar down, a dollar a month
And you'll never have to pay
But there's a better way to do this
Let me show you a better way!
You don't have to be,
another face In the crowd,
You don't have to live the way they
want you to,
Make your own way,
and the others will follow
The revolution is you...
It's in our food these days, you know it's on our TV,
Sometimes we forget that we are what we eat
I don't know the answer,
it's like there's nothin' I can do
It's the price we pay, I guess, if we follow all the rules
Someday day we'll real-ize our children just can't pay,
And nobody up there cares, they're livin' for today
You don't have to be,
another face In the crowd,
You don't have to live the way they
want you to,
Make your own way,
and the others will follow
The revolution is you...

Childhood's End ?? Pink Floyd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myhsnvKFsvQ#ws)
You shout in your sleep.
Perhaps the price is just too steep.
Is your conscience at rest if once put to the test?
You awake with a start to just the beating of your heart.
Just one man beneath the sky,
Just two ears, just two eyes.
You set sail across the sea of longpast thoughts and memories.
Childhood's end,
Your fantasies merge with harsh realities.
And then as the sail is hoist,
You find your eyes are growing moist.
All the fears never voiced say you have to make your final choice.
Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why?
Some are born;
Some men die beneath one infinite sky.
There'll be war, there'll be peace.
But everything one day will cease.
All the iron turned to rust;
All the proud men turned to dust.
And so all things, time will mend.
So this song will end.

Mary accidentally discovered "our song" a few nights ago while watching Graham Norton. (We're coming up on our 9th anniversary, it's about time we had a song!)
The song is "Better" by "Boyzone", an Irish boy band that got back together after a decade apart. I like their video, but this is an almost musically identical version by Tom Baxter, and the video uses real couples instead of actors.

"Once, in Royal David's City, stood a lowly cattle shed
where a mother laid her baby
You'd do well to remember the things He later said.
When you're stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties,
you'll laugh when I tell you to take a running jump.
You're missing the point I'm sure does not need making:
that Christmas spirit is not what you drink.
So how can you laugh when your own mother's hungry
and how can you smile when your reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I just messed up your thoughtless pleasures,
remember if you wish, this is just a Christmas song.

By googling snippets of the lyrics, I found two of the songs that really caught my ear were by the same guy, Jason Aldean. Not really country, musically speaking, but good stuff.
This one in particular reminds me of Lou, Josh, and Cooper. I can easily imagine Rumors of War doing this one. Let's hope they can get together again someday.

Green Grass & High Tides-Lyrics:
In a place you only dream of
Where your soul is always free
Silver stages, golden curtains
Filled my head, plain as can be
As a rainbow grew round the sun
All the stars I've love who died
They come from somewhere beyond the scene you see
These lovely people played just for me
Now if I let you see this place
Where stories all ring true
Will you let me past your face
To see what's really you
It's not for me I ask these questions
As though I were a king
For you have to love, believe and feel
Before the burst of tambourines take you there
Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone soul and glory
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you
Those who don't believe me
Find your souls and set them free
Those who do, believe and love
As time will be your key
Time and time again I've thanked them
For a piece of mind
They helped me find myself
Amongst the music and the rhyme
That enchants you there
Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone soul and glory
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you
Yeah, they play just for you

Jimi Hendrix - 1983 (A merman I should turn to be)
Hurray, I awake from yesterday
Alive, but the war is here to stay
So, my love Catherina and me
Decide to take our last walk
Through the noise to the sea
Not to die, but to be re-born
Away from land so battered and torn....
Forever...
Oh, say can you see, its really such a mess
Every inch of earth is a fighting nest
Giant pencil and lipstick-tube-shaped things
Continue to rain and cause screamin' pain
And the arctic stains
From silver blue to bloody red
As our feet find the sand and the sea...
Is straight ahead
Straight ahead.....
Well, its too bad
That our friends Can't be with us today
(Well, that's too bad)
The machine that we built
Would never save us
That's what they'd say
(That's why they ain't coming with us today)
And they also said "Its impossible
for man to live and breath underwater
forever" was their main complaint
(yeah)
And they also threw this in my face:
They said "Anyway, you know good well
it would be beyond the will of God -
and the grace of the King"
Grace of the King...
(yeah, yeah)
So my darling and I make love in the sand
To salute the last moment ever on dry land
Our machine has done its work, played its part well
Without a scratch on our body
Come and bid it farewell
Starfish and giant flumes greet us with a smile
Before our heads go under, we take a last look
At the killing noise...
OF THE OUT OF STYLE!
THE OUT OF STYLE.... OUT OF STYLE!
From my new favorite artist-I-never-heard-of-before, Paul Thorn, comes "Pimps and Preachers". He gives a brief background in the intro to this song, but there's more detail in his bio (http://www.paulthorn.com/bio/index.html).
"One taught me how to love, one taught me how to fight" is quite literal: his uncle (the pimp) was Thorn's corner man and manager when he went six full rounds against Roberto Duran. He cut Duran pretty badly, but Duran cut him worse; the ring doctor stopped the fight because blood was pouring into both eyes, and his upper lip looked like he'd been hit in the face with an axe.

I was aware of Shooter Jennings' career (son of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter), and that he was more outlaw rock than outlaw country, but I've never listened to his music.
Last night I stumbled onto this video from his 2010 album Black Ribbons. It's a 77 minute concept album about a new imposition of police state rules, and Stephen King plays the part of the radio announcer leading up to the midnight deadline before radio is outlawed.
The best thing I can do is parrot a reviewer who called it, "Allman brothers meets Pink Floyd". It's very The Wall-esque. I mean that as high praise.
SHOOTER JENNINGS SUMMER OF RAGE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqjG5Z-NqNY#ws)
Summer of Rage lyrics:
Chaos is hangin' around
Put your ear to the ground
And shudder from the sound
The death machine ain't slowin' down
It's gainin' pound for pound
A gas mask is the couture in the summer of rage
They're building mass graves within the states
You and I, they'll vaccinate
They're preparin' us for an all out Police State
--
CHORUS
Hush, hush, little child,
your world is goin' wild
Can't trust nothin' but the love in your momma's eyes
Hush hush, little child,
Salvation's in your smile
Just wish I could be alive
To see the whole river rise
--
Our only weapon's total defiance
Let our love for our neighbors guide us
Speak loud when they try to silence
Withhold when try to fight us

And this cat is nine

But that stone just keeps on rolling
Bringing me some real bad news
Takers get the honey
Givers sing the blues
Too many cooks yeah spoil such a good thing
I know I laughed out loud but that was then
Ain't it funny, a fool and his money
Always seemed to find was those real good friends
That stone just keeps on rolling
Bringing me some real bad news

Well that stone keeps on rolling
Bringing me some real bad news
The takers get the honey
The givers sing the blues
A stitch in time, helps to unfold me
Circus starts at eight so don't be late
Please be so kind not to wake me
I think I'll just sit this one out
Well I'm too rolling stoned

Watched a documentary on NetFlix called "Give Me the Banjo" featured Steve Martin, very accomplished player... but we were very impressed and inspired by the history and music contained. Learned of some really bad ass Blues/Folk/Blue Grass/Mountain Music players... very cool stuff.
Pete Seeger, good player, kind of commie and a bit of a carpet bagger that turned the southern art form to his northern/socialist agenda... although we can thank him for a whole new wave of players like Bela Fleck etc.
Highly recommend. Really like the music of Gus Cannon, shame was Pete Seeger was making money off his tunes while Gus was freezing in his shack... so much for socialists looking out for the little guy.

I can remember hearing it in the 1980s and thinking, "That guy sounds like Darrell Hall, but with a deeper voice." Then I would hear it in the 1990s and think, "That guy sounds like Michael Bolton, but with a smoother voice". Then, when I heard it around 2005, I thought, "A couple of bars near the end have a Tom Jones-ish flourish", but otherwise, it didn't sound at all like Tom Jones, so I researched it and found out what an unlikely history that song and that artist's career have had.

I only recently learned that MTV stopped playing music videos... about twenty years ago. Back when cable boxes only went up to channel 36, I used to watch VH1, MTV and C-Span. Once cable upgraded to 54 channel systems, those channels lost out on their "default" viewers, like me.

Try and judge me only by my time and changes
And not mistaken words, for I say many
Listen only to my song and watch my eyes
There's not much time to spill, there's hardly any
Well, look at all the children living in the streets
And they're looking, not afraid to touch each other
They're not afraid to be themselves or someone else
[Incomprehensible]
Never treat a brother like a passing stranger
Honey, won't you always try to keep the love light burning
Sing a song of love and open up your heart
For you might be the prince of peace returning
Yeah, you might be the prince of peace returning
Oh, the love the blind and wounded as that you would yourself
And the businessmen in cells collecting pennies
Judge their wealth by coins that they give away
And not the ones that they keep for themselves for spending
Oh, never be impatient with the ones who love you
It might be yourself that you're burning
Sing a song of love and open up your heart
For you might be the prince of peace returning
Never treat a brother like a passing stranger
Honey, won't you always try to keep the love light burning
Sing a song of love and open up your heart
For you might be the prince of peace returning
For you might be the prince of peace returning
Oh, if I pay me, if I pay you
If I pray to your Jesus then you gonna tell us what you're about to do?
What if I pay me and I might pay you
Who's got the money? Who's got the money?
Who's got the money for, sing the song

I usually don't think you should try to classify and rank artists as the best or whatever... but, I'll break that tradition and say that Jeff Beck, if not the best guitarist in the world, is certainly the most innovative and distinctive. The bass player, Tal Wilkenfeld, is an incredible player, cute and infectiously endearing as well.

Williams' 'Happy' makes history as the first song to top as many as six Billboard radio format charts
Call Pharrell Williams the crossover king.
The singer/writer/producer's smash "Happy" becomes the first song to crown as many as six singular-format Nielsen BDS-based Billboard airplay charts, achieving the feat by rising 3-1 on Adult Contemporary. "Happy" rules Adult Pop Songs and Adult R&B Songs for a fifth week each. It first topped Pop Songs for four weeks, Rhythmic Songs for two and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop (viewable on Billboardbiz) for one.

I've been in many pew-jumping holy-rollin' services. I did pick right up on a point of theological contention in their lyrics, though: "There is only one God, and Jesus is His name."
That tells me they're "Oneness" Pentecostals, not "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost". What's the difference? I suppose it matters to some people whether the Godhead is one triune God existing eternally in three distinct persons, or one God who has existed at different times as three different persons, or one God who has existed as two different persons, with the Holy Spirit as a slightly lesser messenger of sorts.
Meh.
The further along the tree the branch splits, the sharper the divide.
Good story telling, gives me a chill...

Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm,
I know; it's been comin' for some time.
When it's over, so they say, it'll rain a sunny day,
I know; shinin' down like water.
[Chorus]
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day?
Yesterday, and days before, sun is cold and rain is hard,
I know; been that way for all my time.
'Til forever, on it goes through the circle, fast and slow,
I know; it can't stop, I wonder.
[Chorus]
Yeah!

We used to have a forum that covered the Texarkana and regional music scenes. One guy had a music store in West Helena, Arkansas, and was just minding his own business when this scruffy old dude wandered in, looked around, and sat down and started playing guitar.
It was just Robert Plant out and about touring the American South by himself, hanging out in a local guitar shop for about four hours.

You call it the law, we call it apartheid, internment,
Conscription, partition and silence.
It's the law that they make to keep you and me where
They think we belong.
The hide behind steel and bullet-proof glass, machine
Guns and spies,
And tell us who suffer the tear gas and the torture
That we're in the wrong.
CHORUS
No time for love if they come in the morning,
No time to show tears or for fears in the morning,
No time for goodbye, no time to ask why,
And the sound of the siren's the cry of the morning.
They suffered the torture they rotted in cells, went
Crazy, wrote letters and died.
The limits of pain they endured - the loneliness got
Them instead.
And the courts gave them justice as justice is given by
Well-mannered thugs.
Sometimes they fought for the will to survive but more
Times they just wished they were dead.
CHORUS
They took away Sacco, Vanzetti, Connolly and Pearce in
Their time.
They came for Newton and Seal, Bobby Sands and some of
His friends.
In Boston, Chicago, Saigon, Santiago, Warsaw and
Belfast,
And places that never make headlines, the list never
Ends.
CHORUS
The boys in blue are only a few of the everyday cops on
The beat,
The C.I.D., Branchmen, informers and spies do their
Jobs just as well;
Behind them the men who tap phones, take photos,
Program computers and files,
And the man who tells them when to come and take you to
Your cell.
CHORUS
All of you people who give to your sisters and brothers
The will to fight on,
They say you can get used to a war, that doesn't mean
That the war isn't on.
The fish need the sea to survive, just like your people
Need you.
And the death squad can only get through to them if
First they can get through to you.
A long time activist/lawyer that fought and championed an issue we share in common recently quit practicing law... "There is no justice." he said sadly.

Inside of me
I want to see you
I want to free you
I want to be you
Inside of me
Love me 50,000 miles beneath my brain
Love me 50,000 times and then again
Can you love me with a thousand eyes?
Can you see right through my bones?
Can you kiss me with a thousand lips?
Can you melt a solid stone?
Can you hear me from a thousand miles
When you're screaming at the stars?
Can you pull me up to Jupiter
When I'm all hung up on Mars?
Burn my eyes with your flame
Let your world spin free
Let it go, baby
I'll do the same
All depends on me
Let it go
It's all the same
What with jewels that you can't see
Love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, babe
Bring it on home to me...

Ten Years After – 50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain Lyrics
I want to know you
I want to show you
I want to grow you
Inside of me
I want to see you
I want to free you
I want to be you
Inside of me
Love me 50,000 miles beneath my brain
Love me 50,000 times and then again
Can you love me with a thousand eyes?
Can you see right through my bones?
Can you kiss me with a thousand lips?
Can you melt a solid stone?
Can you hear me from a thousand miles
When you're screaming at the stars?
Can you pull me up to Jupiter
When I'm all hung up on Mars?
Burn my eyes with your flame
Let your world spin free
Let it go, baby
I'll do the same
All depends on me
Let it go
It's all the same
What with jewels that you can't see
Love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, babe
Bring it on home to me...

"Don't wanna judge nobody, don't wanna be judged,
Don't wanna touch nobody, don't wanna be touched.
Don't wanna hurt nobody, don't wanna be hurt,
Don't wanna treat nobody like they was dirt.
...
Don't wanna shoot nobody, don't wanna be shot,
Don't wanna buy nobody, don't wanna be bought.
Don't wanna bury nobody, don't wanna be buried,
Don't wanna marry nobody if they're already married.

Don't wanna burn nobody, don't wanna be burned,
Don't wanna learn from nobody what I gotta unlearn.
Don't wanna cheat nobody, don't wanna be cheated,
Don't wanna defeat nobody if they already been defeated.
...
Don't wanna wink at nobody, don't wanna be winked at,
Don't wanna be used by nobody for a doormat.
Don't wanna confuse nobody, don't wanna be confused,
Don't wanna amuse nobody, don't wanna be amused.
...
Don't wanna betray nobody, don't wanna be betrayed,
Don't wanna play with nobody, don't wanna be waylaid.
Don't wanna miss nobody, don't wanna be missed,
Don't put my faith in nobody, not even a scientist.
But if you do right to me, baby,
I'll do right to you, too.
Ya got to do unto others
Like you'd have them, like you'd have them, do unto you."

This Bob Dylan song, Saving Grace, covered by Aaron Neville really cooks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c6b59kXx88
If You find it in Your heart, can I be forgiven?
Guess I owe You some kind of apology.
I've escaped death so many times, I know I'm only living
By the Saving Grace that's over me.
By this time I'd-a thought I would be sleeping
In a pine box for all eternity.
My faith keeps me alive, but I still be weeping
For the Saving Grace that's over me.
Well, the death of life, then come the resurrection,
Wherever I am welcome is where I'll be.
I put all my confidencei n Him, my sole protection
Is the Saving Grace that's over me.
Well, the devil's shining light, it can be most blinding,
But to search for love, that ain't no more than vanity.
As I look around this world all that I'm finding
Is the Saving Grace that's over me.
The wicked know no peace and you just can't fake it,
There's only one road and it leads to Calvary.
It gets discouraging at times, but I know I'll make it
By the Saving Grace that's over

"Wake Up!"
They say good fences
Make good neighbors
For you my friend
This might be true
But you still gotta put
The boards on the windows
To the soul inside of you
That t.v. in the corner
That's their greatest tool
They poison you mind
When you're a child
With their fear
And their guilt
And their rules
They teach you that you're just a number
As they program you in school
So by the time you're out
In their world on your own
You've been trained not to bite
The hand of the cruel
Wake up!
Don't believe that the system is failing
Don't believe that the planet is dead
They'll keep all the food for their fat fucking bellies
And the starving will kill or be fed
And they'll try to turn me against you
So divided,we'll turn to them
Because anything strong cannot be conquered from without
Before first being conquered from within.
Don't let them get you down.
Don't let them get you down.
Don't let them get you down.
Don't let them get you down.
Don't let them get you down.
Don't let them get you down.

Don't let them edit you out.

"Dreaming in the night I saw a land, Where no man had to fight "
"Walking all the day, near tall towers, Where falcons build their nests, Silver winged they fly, They know the call of freedom in their breasts...
"Talking all the day with true friends, Who try to make you stay, Telling jokes and news, Singing songs to pass the night away... "
"Waking in your dawn, I saw you crying in the morning light
Lying where the falcons fly, They twist and turn all in you e'er blue sky ..."
Yeah, I've got a few friends like this: "true friends, Who try to make you stay."

One of my all time favorites, "Once We Were Anarchists" by Frank Turner (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyl-YJHgVQs)
The demonstrations got boring –
Well it was obvious that the government was ignoring us.
It's hard to drag yourself through empty streets
On an empty stomach and no sleep.
The shortcomings got clearer,
As the price we paid got dearer and dearer.
It's supposed to be a case of give and take –
Well I was feeling the give and making a mistake.
And I've heard it said that the unexamined life
Isn't much worth living, and I'm sure they're right.
But it's hard to keep on fighting the good fight
When no one else seems bothered, yeah,
When no one's on your side.
I've got friends who are bankers,
And it's an easy rhyme to call them wankers,
But I must say I envy the way that they live
In a style that's all take and no give,
While I'm playing the Lone Ranger,
Riding to the rescue of six billion strangers,
Armed with only unoriginal songs
And a sense that something's wrong.
And I must admit that I'm tired of saying "no" all the time.
But I must admit that I don't really know what would be right.
And if politics is helping all the people then my political career is pretty fucked,
Because the truth is I don't like people all that much.
The times they aren't a-changing –
Yeah, England's still shit and it's still raining,
And everybody's jaded and tired and bored
And no one lifts a finger because
It's just not in our culture.
Our culture is carrion and we're all vultures,
And no one seems bothered by this state of play –
It seems that the stench is with us to stay.
So I had a go, I tried examining life.
It wasn't much worth living – I guess they're right.
And I'm tired of fighting a fight that's not my fight.
But so is everybody else – we're all on the same side.
I'm young enough to be all pissed off
But I'm old enough to be jaded.
I'm of the age where I want things to change
But with age my hopes have faded.
I'm young and bored of being young and bored –
If I was old I could say I'd seen it all before.
In short, I'm tired, and in short I'm probably fired.
If the revolution doesn't want me I don't give a shit.

They've been around for almost 20 years, now. And have been relatively-famous since 2000. Plenty of "old folks" are familiar with Disturbed. Generally, whether or not someone is familiar with them will have more to do with that individual's taste in music than that individual's age.

Oh yeah! Great times. I've got just a few stories... :)
Went with a date to one. She was a tough lacrosse player.
We sat comfortably in the balcony of the old Boston Garden and enjoyed the opening act, Fleetwood Mac, which was my choice.
She wanted to "get to the front" for the next band. I thought it looked too crazy. She said something like, "Don't worry, I'll lead the way." :)

They recognize that war is a big business, not something done to help the people, and that the media works hand-in-hand with the warmongers to make it happen by brainwashing the mases. They also recognize that resistance is necessary - it's not a problem that will fix itself, or be fixed by the government. They choose to create an image of that resistance coming from an avenging angel, which is where we differ on the path we take. But they're facing in the right direction (ie, away from war), so that's a start; those who face war see only the paths that lead to war. Some percentage of their fans will turn to face that same direction, but will look more closely at the paths that lead that way, and choose the peaceful one.

RUSH is very popular in Brazil. The song Tom Sawyer is used for the theme music to the TV show McGyver there.
The DVD RUSH in Rio was pretty cool to see 40,000 people singing along to all their songs. RUSH didn't even know how popular they were there.

He has purposely turned away from the big business path that most artists try to go down. He seems to prefer the control when it's him in his bus traveling around, makes his own recordings. So give me a peak of your areola out of your Hanes
Cause she got thighs on her, Look at the size on her
Big ol' shake like she need fries on her
Wanna see ya in ya boustia (Swoop ya)
See ya in a group and say, 'Hey!'
Areola, Stick 'em out
Don't know what I'm talkin 'bout
That circle around the skittle
In the middle you put in your mouth
But I love ya, baby (Hell naw!)
Titties, If they big or small
That's what I'm talkin 'bout
Now turn around and pull them out your bra
[Chorus]
Oooh (Areola!), Oooh (Areola!), Oooh (Areola!)
That shirt came off and showed a...
Oooh (Areola!), Oooh (Areola!), Oooh (Areola!)
That shirt came off, That bra came off that... Oooh

Seen her lookin prettier than Vogue
Tooken over by an unadulterated player
Way to get up in the middle
Till I pan up at them jugs
Now I'm thinkin about the little bitty circles
Decorated all around the nipple
With that badonk, It come with those tig ol' big o's
You see your firm breasticles
I got a big ol' buddy inside of my skimmies, You need
Just thought that I would let you know
So if you want to
I can give you what you need
Just as long as you let me
Suck and touch on those titties, baby
I think that I am in love
With what's with on these features

Baby girl, I wanna see with the top off
Take the Vickie shit off
You know it popped off her
Now I know she ready to get it knocked off
Kissed the areola and she said that It's gon' cost ya
I aint givin up the money, You know it
I'm a certified playa and I'm sumthin like a pimp
Ask ya mama,
She could tell ya that Tecca N9na's a bonafide layer
Get ya walkin with a limp
And you know it got tore owa-owa up
Tecca N9na hit and it swole owa-owa up
Never owa dove for the owa-owa butt
Owa Yo, Don't you know I'm a owa-owa nut?
I made a song about your areola
Go on and let ya bra fall right off ya shoulders
If you aint got no titties, baby
You better hold up
(What is an areola?)
[Makzilla]
It's the area around the nipple
Ya boy Makzilla made this official
Boy don't trip, Don't pull your pistol
Know what I'm sayin? Uh huh

"Call To Arms"
I done Syria, Afghanistan,Iraq and Iran
North Korea, tell me where does it end
Well the bodies keep piling up with everyday
How many more of them they're gonna send
Well they sent their sons and daughters off to die
for some war to control the heroin
Well, son I hope you don't grow up
Believin' that you've got to be a puppet to be a man
Well they cut off your hair and put a badge on your arm
Strip you off your identity
Tell you to keep your mouth shut boy and get in the line
Meet your maker overseas
Wearin' that Kim Jong-il hat while your grandma is selling pills stat
Meanwhile I'm wearing 'can't pay my fucking bills' hat

Becky got us tickets to see Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys which features his grand son. Saw them at the Iron Horse in Northampton Mass. Sat right up front. Good show, although Ralph Stanley didn't play banjo, late eighties probably the last chance to see him sing. Particularly poignant when he sang Oh Death. Well the extra cool part was Becky won a guitar and the band autographed it!
Some nice folks we met took some pictures for us.

I usually think of Steve Winwood as a keyboardist...
He was a great guitarist as well. Cool Gibson Firebird he is playing.
Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
Please don't be sad if it was a straight mind you had
We wouldn't have known you all these years

Lyrics: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/sturgillsimpson/calltoarms.html
Nobody is lookin' up to care about a drone

I just hope that was a solid state keyboard in a Hammond case, and they didn't actually destroy a B-3 on stage.

I had a buddy who got a B3 from Army surplus auction. It included the instructions on how to destroy it to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. ;D
Lately I find most of my favorite music via NPR.
This one doesn't have pretty visuals, but the sound is amazing. St. Paul and the Broken Bones: it's like Susan Boyle had a younger brother into Alabama Soul.

I used to have dreams that I hadn't really graduated Boot Camp, that it was just a dream I had. But, honestly, I have had more psychological repercussions from video post production.... PPTSD, Post Production Traumatic Stress Disorder. ;D I dream I'm back in the edit suite working 24 hours straight and the mastering deck eats the master tape right before we duplicate 50 tapes to send out to TV stations to air that evening. ;D :o :'(

Rory Gallagher with Jack Bruce - Politician (https://youtu.be/DXk--eL5-kQ)
https://youtu.be/DXk--eL5-kQ
Rory didn't even know the tune until he was hummed it as they walked on stage.
Rory Gallagher (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Gallagher) one of the most gifted guitarists, certainly the best Irish one, jams with Jack Bruce (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Bruce), Scotland's most famous rock performer. The joyful look on Jack Bruce's face...
When asked how it felt to be the best rock guitarist in the world Jimi Hendrix said "I don't know you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher."
Rory was kind of bloated looking from his chronic, deteriorating health issues. He had particularly acidic skin that ate the finish off his guitar. The first Fender Stratocaster imported into Ireland.
A working musician till the end, he never sold out and played for the joy of it. To think an Irishman could channel the soul of a Mississippi Delta Blues black man. He played authentic style slide etc with his own Irish influenced flavor added in.

John Prine 'Christmas In Prison'
https://youtu.be/00Ig33jctXs
It was Christmas in prison and the food was real good
We has turkey and pistols carved out of wood
I dream of her always even when I don't dream
Her name's on my tongue and her blood's in my strings
Wait a while eternity
Old Mother Nature's got nothin' on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me now
I'm rollin' my sweetheart
I'm flowin' by God
She reminds me of a chess game with someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain after a prairie fire
Her heart is as big as this whole goddamn jail
And she's sweeter than saccharine at a drug store sale
Wait a while eternity
Old Mother Nature's got nothin' on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me now
I'm rollin' my sweetheart
I'm flowin' by God
The search light in the big yard turns 'round with the gun
And spotlights the snowflakes like the dust in the sun
It's Christmas in prison there'll be music tonight
I'll probably get homesick, I love you, Good night
Wait a while eternity
Old Mother Nature's got nothin' on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me now
I'm rollin' my sweetheart
I'm flowin' by God

This is a great reaction video to YYZ, by two guys who have never heard Rush. It's funny how they think this is very early Prog, and that it sounds like Michael Jackson (two years before Thriller was released).

I have no authority... but I'll allow it.
Most historians concur that the Johnsonite empire was forced to cede authority over their eastern empire to the Mongols in 1257 after the cardboard scimitar was proven ineffectual against a cavalry of archers .
