Not sure when or where, but wouldn't it be cool to be there with welcome signs and banners and stuff? I think we could swing it...take a little coordination though.
Preliminary details:
Sunday December 14th, 11 am
Rte 9 @ Brattleboro/NH border pedestrian bridge
Oh, wouldn't it be cool to have a huge group walking with them from the NH border? :D
That does sound like fun. Of course I don't expect most people are going to manage the walk from Brattleboro all the way to Keene that this guy can probably knock out in half the day now.
I was thinking of walking with him through Keene, but I'd be up for this idea too.

Hey, we can ride bikes alongside if he's so fast. I say if Will can walk all the way from Oregon, I can walk 19.5 miles. I'm planning to join in the high fives at the border and if necessary take a blister for the team.
People could walk with him however far they wanted...like Ian could just walk through Keene. Is that where he's headed?
Sounds like a hell of an idea. 8)
As cool as walking with him would be, and it would be, I think the original idea is already better. I love the idea of a bunch of porcs standing just over the border right by the "Welcome to NH" sign and getting his reaction on film. Any chance of keeping him in the dark about the plans or does he frequent this forum?
You know, there's a kind of symbolism to it too that could make for a great write-up in NH Free Press or something. Up to the border, he's walking alone, but the moment he crosses the border into NH, he's walking with a huge crowd of supporters. Brings a tear to my eye. :)
a computer geek, who reads off his GPS coordinates constantly, kept in the dark about an internet convo? don't bet on it
How about a freedom finish line, packed to the gills with porcs right there in portsmouth?

Awesome idea, though I think the ribbon makes more sense at the VT/NH border. He's walking to NH; anywhere he goes when he gets here is just touring.
excellent

No offense to Portsmouth, but that's not the finish line into NH, it's the exit out of NH into the Atlantic!
If he could arrive on a Saturday we could have a big crowd waiting on the NH side of the border, ribbon and all. I love that idea.
Lauren was going to walk with him ... now she will be hearing of his progress from our letters.
I really like the ribbon idea by the big green pedestrian bridge by Brattleboro vt.
The seacoast guys could do something else when he hits the ocean too. :)

I'm getting this mental image of Bill walking into the water and disappearing dramatically like the creature from the black lagoon.
Yeah, he's got to ge out to the Isles of Shoals.
The Isles of Shoals (http://www.seacoastnh.com/Places_&_Events/Isles_of_Shoals/The_Isles_of_Shoals/)
TEN MILES OUT
These nine rocky islands are divided along the border of New Hampshire and Maine. The Isles were a key destination for European fisherman before the Pilgrims landed. Today they are surrounded in misty legends made famous by island poet Celia Thaxter.
I was picturing meeting him at the border with signs/banner and then walking with him.
I'll be there. Good ideas.
I also think this is an excellent idea, and depending on the day/time, I will be there. The FSP should also send out a press release. If someone took an informal count ahead of time as to how many people will greet Will at the border of NH, the press release could be written ahead of time and include that figure (for example, "'dozens' of FSP movers came to greet the Walker for Liberty".
Let's just hope he doesn't pull a Forrest Gump and turn right around and walk back! ;D
Well, he is awfully good at this walking thing now...
I bet he will say ...
"I'm kinda tired ..."
why Portsmouth? He should walk right down 286 and land in the Ocean in Seabrook!
either way, it'll be a beautiful thing to see him walk ocean to ocean. Fantastic!
Well he could walk across the bottom of the ocean if he had that curse like the Pirates of the Caribbean.
But anyhoo, I like that idea of coordinating his arrival so it can be on the weekend so more people would be able to be at the border greeting him.
I guess we need to get his route into and across NH.
It should be available on his website: walkforliberty.com/map (http://walkforliberty.com/map)
Many thank yous :)

It it is not. It looks like he just drew a line across NH. The 1/2 half of it may be correct, but after Nashua it seems to be just a straight line (not following any roads) and ends up in MA.
Seems a reasonable guess that he's coming in on Rt. 9.
Anyway, that works for Ian ;D
It's just a little hard tracking via youtube but it looks like he should be entering NY. I'd like to meet up with him for a bit. Anyone have contact info?
Mike (central NY :-[ )

Thanks Kat, I got a youtube comment from Will saying he just entered NY.

There is a huge pedestrian bridge at Brattleboro on Rte 9. It would work great for banners and the marathon ribbon across your path (now a necessary item! :D ).
I like the idea of having bikes along with the walkers too.
There's also a covered bridge over the Connecticut River. It's at Windsor, VT and Cornish, NH. It doesn't have a direct path east from there though. It'd be great for photos though!
The route 9 bridge is huge ... and only for pedestrians, since they built a new one
the covered bridge is cool ... but maybe not on a great route

Bikes would be good, as long as there is plenty of room for them on whatever roads I'm walking on. I don't want anyone getting hit!

Russell realized that covered bridges are no good for photography/filming - they're dark inside.
hehe that Russell is a smart fella!
I'm going to play with a map this evening, see if I can come up with anything.
the one on route 9 is easy to see from a distance and you can film people walking across it

some ideas
we could have people walk with you every step in NH ... even if we have to tag team it or pass a baton between walkers. If you had 10 companions they could each walk 2 miles with you from the border to Keene. They could be doing quick litter pickup as they go.
Should we have your favorite song playing as you cross the bridge and break the tape?
How about the Rocky running music?
If the walking companion carried a music player with you ... the filming would be more fun and already have a soundtrack.
So where are you planning on entering NH and then where do you go from there?
You started at a natural setting ... maybe go for a natural ending.
I always pictured going from the Santa Monica pier to some lighthouse in NH. :)

Seabrook Beach is nice but the Hampton Beach part is a little nicer.
New Castle has a couple nice light houses. For those that don't know, New Castle is an island town off of Portsmouth. It contains Ft. Constitution which used to be Ft. William and Mary. A skirmish happened there years before the American Revolution which led to a few other skirmishes in NH before the American Revolution and New Hampshire being freed from England before the Declaration of Independence was even written.

Can you walk on 101 from Manchester to Hampton? I think it is consider an interstate or controlled highway. The government removes signs near the road, for example. Will has been smartly avoiding the interstate.
Only a couple of miles around Amherst and Milford would be a potential problem walking. But I see people bicycling that stretch all the time, so perhaps not.
I fixed the website, Varrin is indeed President but thinks he might be working (ie, someplace other than NH) at the start of December. He'll know that later this month.
The finish line ribbon with FSP logos and Walk For Liberty would be about $140. So if anyone wants to chip in to get it, let me know.
I still say red tape would be better :) And we already have W4L and FSP banners for the cameras at the event to see. Are you sure you want to spend this $140.
No, I was trying to get other people to pitch in for it :D
I think we're going to make a finish line ribbon instead of buying one.
Will: do you want to set a time for coming across the border? (What time will this party start? ;D )

My route after Keene is actually up in the air. I'm open to suggestions on that as well, as to the best path to take.
QuoteBrattleboro (clothing once optional) VT is part of the Shire and would be a great last stopping place before you step into the "Free State" on a brisk morning in December.
Not sure what you mean by Brattleboro is part of the Shire?
You could head right on across 101 from Keene to the ocean. :)
The Shire expanded over to Brattleboro a couple of years ago.
Brattleboro got assimilated?

Would a 9 am start time work?
At current rate, approximately 18 days to Brattleboro, VT, Dec. 4th.
At current rate, that would put Will in Dover on the day of Lauren's release, Dec. 10th.
Her release should be the 9th. They count the first day as a full day. Unless they give her extra time for being uncooperative again.

I've been thinking a bit more about this and perhaps a bit later...I don't know how far away people will be driving from but I wouldn't want them to have to get up too early. How about 11am?
.
11:00 sounds great :)
Just an FYI on the 101 idea. What is currently 27 used to be 101. 27 parallels and criss-crosses 101 all the way from Manch to Hampton. I used to drive it all the time between Hampton and Raymond(/Deerfield) while building my house, because its a prettier drive.
So, he could walk all the way from Manch to Hampton on 27. He'd be passing probably less than a mile from the Travis place in Candia if he did.
If I were walking, I'd probably prefer 27 over 101.
cool
I used to love the 'old 101' with all the crosses, high speeds, and no median. I remember having to count all the crosses where people died on the way up to Camp Onway

Cool, looks like you will be walking through Texaco Town today. Maybe they have a refinery there you can video.
Lake effects snow in NY can be interesting, with wind in a steady direction the snow can pile up in a rather small area. Last year one town piled up 3-5 feet with nearby areas getting very little.
I don't know if I'm too late to the Party but there's a great big house to have an "end of the road" party for Will on the Seacoast (Seabrook), 2 miles from the water that can be available if it could happen on a Fri. eve or better on Saturday (all day/night).

Once you get going you hardly notice. You may even get so warm you have to take off layers. When I was out hiking earlier this year I'd be down to my base layer (thin polypro shirt) as low as 35 degrees.
I just picked up a warm scarf at Wal-mart for $5. It's nice for protecting your face from wind and stuph. They also have long-sleeve t-shirts for like $8 that you can layer with other stuph or thermal shirts for $10. Fancier thermal shirts from from about $15 to $17. The $17 ones are like for skiing and crap in really cold weather. They're probably overkill for most people just in it for an hour or two at a time, but for walking all day long in New England weather, might be useful.
Met with Will yesterday, cool but just a little snow. Ended the day in Elbridge, NY. 6 degrees here last night.

I have some bad news....our RV is worse than we first had thought. It turns out that our transmission is completely shot (apparently due to a shoddy job by whomever had replaced the engine in it before we bought it). So we need a new (rebuilt) one, but unfortunately it won't come in till this next Monday, Dec 1.
After much consideration, we've decided to push back our arrival date to Saturday, Dec 13. All the other details to remain the same.
I'm really sorry about this. I hope this doesn't screw up any plans for anyone.
I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone though, but am bummed that it's going to be a week later!
Will
That sucks, but mainly because of the expense. One more week won't kill you - the extra anticipation will just sweeten the reward!
I'm still in for walking with you the full distance on Dec 13. I'll see you at the border.
I should still be able to be there.
Lauren will be happy. :)
She'll be sad that you had to replace your transmission... and that you'll be delayed... but she will be happy that she will get to be at your arrival. She was looking froward to it.

On the road again... :D
Actually we had a bit of a scare this morning. We started driving to where I last left off walking, and Brooke noticed that the RPMs on the RV were really high and that it didn't seem to be shifting into high gear. Also, the engine temp
appeared to be extremely high (we later concluded that that may have been a false reading). We pulled over and consulted over the phone with her dad Roy (who is a mechanic) and he had her check several things, including tightening the vacuum hose between the engine and radiator. We tried it out again, and the problem seemed to be fixed, but no sooner had we concluded that than BAM - the engine just died. The engine wouldn't restart again. We were literally stuck with a dead RV in the middle of the road.
We started to evaluate our options, when a few minutes later a Sheriff pulled up. He ended up being very hands-off, didn't get in our face the whole time, but instead pretty much kept out of our hair till we got the situation taken care of (thankfully).
We met a very nice gentleman who lived nearby who pulled our RV with his tractor to an empty lot which was on the corner. We started going thru the possible problems with Roy, and discovered that the wires going into the distributor cap were unplugged. We plugged them back in and taped them in place, and the RV then started like a charm. Brooke drove it cautiously for the next few miles, but all seemed to be well again.
So to sum it up - I didn't end up walking any today as planned, but I'll start again bright and early tomorrow morning. We still have a couple days buffer to get to NH by the 13th.
Whew, glad it worked out :)
Sigh. I may need to be elsewhere in the mid day on the 13th. Varrin can't commit to being there yet either as he is on call.
Is Jason still in NH? :)
Will has got to be within driving distance of New Hampshire now. Anyone interested in a road trip to meet him? By the way the chip in widget on http://www.walkforliberty.com/ expired, and is not accepting any more donations.
Jason should be in NH on the 13, and Jon has nothing better to do than to be there. Last I heard (Sunday) Jason was in NC visiting family but that should change before the 13th.

In Amsterdam, NY tonight.
Does anyone know of a place we can plug in our RV, or perhaps even short-term rent after we reach NH, and while I finish walking to the seacoast? Ideally a couple places, around Keene, and then perhaps around Manchester, to use as bases for when I'm walking near those areas.
Thanks.
Today in Schenectady, NY. Supposed to get down to 10 deg. tonight. Although we looked around several places (and even offered a motel $25 just to plug in to electric!) we couldn't find a place to plug in.
Hopefully we'll be around by the morning.

Is it a diesel? Is the battery OK?
It's an old gas engine. An '85 Chevy 454 engine. It has a carburetor though so that's part of the difficulty in starting it.
The battery seemed to be fine at first (it was turning over ok) but since we've been trying to start it so much the battery is almost dead now.
Using starting fluid saves cranking
For the future: What about just keeping the engine running all night?
Get a drop light on an extension cord and keep a 60W light bulb light in the engine compartment overnight.

What about just keeping the engine running all night?
That works for a diesel, but takes too much gas for a gasoline engine. It sounds like it was cranking fine at first and just needed a shot of starter fluid before the battery ran down. The good news is the weather is getting warmer tomorrow. The drop light version of a dipstick heater works but a dipstick heater is more reliable and safer, but both require your finding a place to plug in over night. I can see that it will pay to check the weather forecast each night.
Thanks for all the suggestions! We got the battery charged back up but then flooded it. Finally after waiting a while we were able to get it started and keep going (although I only got in 9 miles). Stopped in Colonie, NY.
Schenectady News (http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2008/dec/09/1209_walkers/) and as a bonus a poll on the auto bailout on the same page; 65% say no.
Keeping some dry gas in the tank seems to help start things when it's cold. Glad to hear you got it started. Is the plugging in at night for lights only? If so you could use a deep cell 12 volt battery, a cheap inverter and a low wattage CFL bulb in a cheapo lamp. If you could possibly hook up something under the hood you could be alternately charging your car battery and your "light" battery while driving off your alternator. Just a thought.

A weird situation happened last night. I had stopped by a Sunoco station asking if we could pay to plug in overnight. The manager said he would have to ask the owner who would be coming back shortly, so he said to come back in a bit. We came by about 45 minutes later, after my walk was done. He said it was ok, and there was no need to pay.
It was fine until about 10:30 last night when the power went off. I assumed we had tripped a breaker, so I went outside to check it out. Our cord was unplugged. I thought maybe it was some kid who had come by and noticed it and was just messing around, so I plugged it back in. Then about an hour later, it happened again. I went outside again, and the night employee confronted me accusing me of stealing other people's electricity without permission. I explained the situation, and he said he talked to the owner who he said didn't know anything at all about it, and that we weren't to plug back in again. I said again that we were still willing to pay for the electricity, but that didn't seem to matter.
So I put the cord back away and no one else bothered us the rest of the night.
Very strange.
Stopped last night in Pittstown, NY.
We read that there is a winter storm watch for where we'll be tomorrow (Thursday): winter storm watch (http://www.weather.com/weather/alerts/localalerts/USVT0017?phenomena=WS&significance=A&areaid=VTZ013&office=KALY&etn=0012)
Would anyone like to volunteer to help us out? Brooke is concerned about driving the RV in those conditions if that storm actually happens.
Would anyone be willing to drive out tomorrow to help out as a support driver? We'll be starting from around Bennington, VT. Ideally we'd need help from 8am-5pm. If you can't do that long, from noon-4:30pm would still be a great help.
Alternatively if you can't stay the day but don't need your car that day, Brooke could drive you back and then pick you up again in the evening.
Another possibility is if someone could drive out our Subaru already, Brooke could then drive them back.
We would pay for gas in all the above situations.
Any amount of help would be greatly appreciated.
Will

Thats why it's so important to get names. If you had said 'I spoke with XXXXX, and he called the owner YYYYY and he said it was ok." If the person is still rude then say "I am sorry if this is has been a misunderstanding, I will clear it up with the owner tomorrow, can I get your name please?" Normally people will know that your not pulling a fast one if you can mention names of who you talked with and when.

Would it make sense for you to drive the RV to Winchester today in the rain and then just have people drive you in a car to your "walking location" for the day and then come back to the base camp each day?

I think we've figured out what we'll do. Today I'll walk as far as I can and then we'll stop in Bennington. Tomorrow it's expected just to be snow most of the day, not ice, so we should be fine then. I'll get up as early as possible and then walk till about 3, then we'll drive on to Brattleboro and stay there. We'll rent a car for Friday.
I definitely don't want to go into NH again till I walk there. ;D And after some reflection, I like what Ian said when I called in to FTL last night about the symbolism of us being by ourselves until we reach NH, and then all of a sudden we're surrounded by friends.
So anyway, we'll be ok. :)

Will Buchannan: will@willbuchanan.com
It all started with a simple question. What can one person do to spread the message of Liberty? After 8 months, 3100 miles and 7 pairs of shoes Will Buchanan has found the answer. Will started the Walk for Liberty on April 14 from Cannon Beach, Oregon and will be crossing his last state line into New Hampshire Saturday Dec. 13th. The Walk for Liberty is a quest to let as many people as possible know about the loss of freedoms in the United States of America .
Each day Will has made a video of his trip. These videos are available on his blog at http://walkforliberty.com. If you want a primer on libertarianism and its interaction with the real world, watch these videos. As an added bonus, you can enjoy the stunning scenery – America on foot.
Even a activity as peaceful as going for a walk will get you hassled by police in today's America. On day 163 of his walk, Will was detained by Whiting, Indiana police, who intimidated Will into deleting his footage of an oil refinery. More recently on day 198, Will was detained in Seneca Falls, NY when apparently some woman called the police to report the suspicious activity of a white guy walking. Police demanded ID and all sorts of personal information. The officer was polite until Will began questioning. Some woman being uncomfortable about a guy walking down the road is now "just cause" to detain a person who was admittedly doing nothing wrong.
The Walk For Liberty is fast approaching New Hampshire. Will has, for the most part, walked the whole of America by himself. It is symbolic of the Free State Project that once Will enters New Hampshire, he will no longer be walking on his own – he'll be joined by Freestaters on the last leg of his journey to the Atlantic Ocean. There will be a welcoming party to meet The Walk For Liberty at the New Hampshire border. This is scheduled to occur December 13th at 11:00am on Route 9, at the border between Brattleboro, VT and NH. Volunteers from the crowd will then walk with Will to Keene, and later, to the seacoast.
Interview with Will Buchannan
What made you decide to walk across the country?
Brooke and I were going to be moving to NH from Hawaii anyway. Brooke had the idea, "why not walk to get there?"
What was the biggest highlight of your trip?
As of this writing, I'm still anticipating it. I think it will be the welcome we receive at the border once we arrive at our new home of New Hampshire.
What was the biggest hardship with this journey?
Trying to get up in the morning when the temperature in the RV is in the 40's.
Do you feel like you accomplished your purpose for the trip?
Many people have told me that this is the most outside media attention the FSP has garnered in quite some time, so I'd say that's pretty good. And yes I will be accomplishing my main purpose, which is walking to move to NH.
Your wife helped you on your walk. Was all this tough on your family life?
Brooke has helped tremendously. We've experienced some growing pains in our relationship, but I think we've emerged stronger for it.
How did you first hear about the Free State Project? What made you decide to join?
I'm pretty sure it was from Walter Williams' website back in early 2003, after hearing him as a guest host when I had been listening to Rush Limbaugh at the time. Once I heard about it, it was a no-brainer.
Do you have a message for people thinking about moving to NH with the FSP?
What trigger would need to happen for you to decide to move to NH?
What do you plan to do once you get settled in New Hampshire?
I'm looking forward to getting to know lots of people and getting active. I intend to find work I can do which advances the liberty movement.
How did people along the way react to your trek?
One of the biggest surprises I've had is how supportive most people have been, and receptive to the message that government has gotten to big and too intrusive in our lives.
What's the top message you'd like to communicate to readers?
If you have something you'd like to accomplish, don't hesitate, just do it!
Any wisdom you've learned from this trip you'd like to share?
Live your life the way you want to, and don't try to satisfy everyone else's expectations of you.
Sent to the Free Keene news list which re-hit some of the above as well as WKBK and "Talkback". Also posted to Free Keene.

What? No one in NH has a car that can come pick you up? I can I know. Scratch that. I guess you are on your own until you get to the bridge. As soon as you reach the river you are already in NH.
How's that banner coming? Are we stretching it across the new bridge or the old one?

Is the current plan for Will to cross the border sometime around 11:00a? Or is the plan for us to gather at 11:00a and wait until he gets there? Or some other time? Or some other plan?
I'm hoping the he's so close that vehicle difficulties won't postpone his arrival, but we'll see.
I think we should gather before 11 am and he'd walk across the border at precisely 11. :)

When I was driving out to pick him up, my wipers kept icing up and the joints couldn't keep it flat on my windshield so there were huge gaps with puddles of water on my windshield. I pulled over and manually de-iced them about half a dozen times there and back.
Holy crap! This winter thing is pretty harsh!
Good Job Dale! ;D
I hope you guys know what you're in for. Walking 15 miles is not for the faint of heart. I'm not even sure I'm physically up to it, and I spent months this year out hiking mountains.
I was planning on shuttling people around, so if someone got too tired, could do a rescue.

To be honest, it really wasn't that bad. The windshield wiper thing was just really odd. I think it must take a very specific combination of conditions, like being just barely above freezing so the rain comes down liquid but somehow it gets cold enough on the metal to freeze it. *shrug* Weird.

I'm planning on parking my car at the border and walking with Will for as long as I hold up - maybe 8 or 10 miles, maybe slightly farther, and will need a ride back to the border. I thought of bringing a bicycle, but really don't like the idea of riding on ice (it is supposed to be clear and cold on Saturday).

Welcome to "freezing rain", which is pretty much the only kind of winter precipitation from central Texas up through the Mid-South.
I can't wait for that to be a rarity, instead of typical. Gimmee snow over ice, any day!

When else would I cross other than precisely at 11am? ;)
Hey, and I've already lived in Massachusetts -- for 5 years!
Stopped last night a few miles out of Wilmington, VT. If I can do 20 miles today, then I'll have 5 miles to do Saturday morning.
With our RV possibly dead (and additionally because the furnace doesn't seem to work any more), we might need a place to rent short-term, until we can find a mid-term place to rent. :) Does anyone have any leads?
Saturday - walk as far as we can toward Keene
Sunday - Not planning on walking any this day.
I think Ian mentioned there's a Monadnock Social Sunday? Where and when is that? I might go to that.
Go to the 2nd Thanksgiving dinner as well.
However, at some point we need to get our (possibly broken down) RV from VT, as well as return our rental car. Not sure when that will take place.
Would anyone want to volunteer to film for me with my camera at the border? My idea is to hold my camera up to the crowd, and then hand it off. Feel free to go crazy and film as much as you want - you can just keep it rolling.
Thanks in advance!

You should bring it over to Lauren's and my place here in Winchester.
There is room to keep it and if I can't fix it at least I'll know what's wrong with it.
There is also a place to plug it in here.
I feel horrible about this, but unfortunately we're going to have to push the arrival back. We set out this morning from Brattleboro on Rte 9 to go back to the last place where I had stopped, and came across a police barricade. The highway was closed due to one or more downed trees from the ice storm. So we started to take an alternate route, and passed several vehicles coming from the other direction, the driver of one of whom told us that the road was blocked off ahead as well due to downed trees. After talking to a nice local in a convenience store, we tried a third way, and finally found a downed tree blocking the road ahead of us. On our way there a big chunk of ice felt from a tree overhead and really freaked out Brooke. When we started to drive back another tree fell right behind us. That was realistically the last way to get back to where I had left off (we already had to loop back a lot to go that way). And with the projection for when Rte 9 is supposed to be opened again, I wouldn't have enough time today to get the miles in I need to in order to get there by Saturday at 11am.
I'm trying to decide whether to try to still do some miles today and then do a lot of miles Saturday morning, and then get there sometime Saturday afternoon, or push the whole thing back another day to Sunday at 11am.
My thinking is probably more people would still be able to show up if it were Saturday afternoon - many sounded like they were going to hang around then anyway. Plus it seems there are several activities on Sunday already (churches, social sunday, 2nd thanksgiving).
However, perhaps more press might be likely to show up if it were Sunday at 11am. Another thing about Saturday is I wouldn't know for sure exactly what time to schedule it for since it might depend on how many miles I can get in today. And that uncertainty might make it even less likely press would show up.
Anyway that's what I'm thinking about at the moment. I probably should decide definitively soon, so I'll post back again, but just wanted to give you a heads-up. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
I'll be there whenever you choose.

Announced on Free Keene
For Wil and Brooke:
1st, there is a room available here at Little Minnesota. It is a fairly large bedroom with a built in bookshelf and closet, next to a bathroom.
2nd, we are trying to work out the logistics of getting your car to you. Tomorrow (Saturday) Carl and one of his GFs are going over to Keene, and can bring it over there. They just need to know where to deliver it. Carl figures it can be dropped off at Jim-n-Lauren's or Mark Edge's or Dawn Lincoln's or something like that. If anyone can pick it up somewhere in that area, please let me know.
Is there any way to add a notice at the bottom of http://www.newhampshirefreepress.com/NHFreePress/?q=node/281 that the arrival is delayed one day?
In retrospect I'm thinking it was not such a good idea to not be more willing to reach out to help people as they are enroute to NH. Will is within spitting distance of the border now.
Rt 9 from Wilmington to Brattleboro is expected to remain closed all night, and I would plan on it not being open in the morning either. I would think that the friendly gestapo would let Brooke through to drop Will off where ever he left off today. If not, the road is closed for maybe 15 miles, but if you go north on Rt 100 from Wilmington you can go through Dover and get back to Rt 9 and go either direction. From Brattleboro take Rt 30 north. The roads are very icy, though. It took me about an hour and a half to drive from Wilmington to Brattleboro by going around.

Yeah we are frustratingly close. Well it was definitely the right decision to delay till Sunday Dec 14. I hope I'll be able to get my walking in today so that we can still make that arrival deadline.

Would anyone want to volunteer to film for me with my camera at the border? My idea is to hold my camera up to the crowd, and then hand it off. Feel free to go crazy and film as much as you want - you can just keep it rolling.
Thanks in advance!
Sure, I can do this.
Thanks! Would you still be able to do this Sunday (assuming the road opens and I can get my miles in)?

Saturday - walk as far as we can toward Keene
Sunday - Not planning on walking any this day.
I think Ian mentioned there's a Monadnock Social Sunday? Where and when is that? I might go to that.
Go to the 2nd Thanksgiving dinner as well.
However, at some point we need to get our (possibly broken down) RV from VT, as well as return our rental car. Not sure when that will take place.
Social Sundays, 4pm at Vendetta, details:

Thanks, and for announcing on FreeKeene.

With our RV possibly dead (and additionally because the furnace doesn't seem to work any more), we might need a place to rent short-term, until we can find a mid-term place to rent. :) Does anyone have any leads?
You should bring it over to Lauren's and my place here in Winchester.
There is room to keep it and if I can't fix it at least I'll know what's wrong with it.
There is also a place to plug it in here.
Thanks, we'll do that! Whenever we'll be able to get back to it. :)

Thanks, Ron, on both counts! I'm sure somebody could give us a ride to it wherever it is over there.
I'm in Keene right now, but am on the way over to meet you with a cup of hot chocolate. It's cold today. If Rt 9 is open I should get there by 10 I would guess. Probably sooner.
Wil, are your ears burning? Make sure you check out the latest AIYH comic when you get a chance.

Is there a time/place to meet in Keene from which we'll all caravan towards the border?
I've sent Adam a deposit to move onto Porc Row in Manch. Of course, I'll be looking for and follow (or create) tempting opportunities when I get to NH.

There's a good possibility that I won't make it since I seem to have strained a muscle and won't be able to do much (if any) walking. I'll see how I feel in the morning. If I don't make it then I'll walk with you through Manchester, assuming you pass this way.
The most important thing to have is LOTS of people right at the border, even if you only walk 100 ft. The best photo-op for the FSP ever! Great for videos, showing Will walking by himself right up to the border and then we all start walking with him. It will be very moving.

Does anyone know of a reasonable priced (and available!) motel in the Keene area where we could stay tonight?
There ain't no such thing :-\ But I'd guess you'd be able to get a couch :D
Hotel rooms can be hard to come by sometimes and they aren't cheap. Though, not sure how much the Valley Green costs. I'd be a little scared to stay there.
Will on Augur Hole Rd (I suspect that someone didn't know how to spell Auger). He had to walk around the road crews by taking Lake Raponda Rd to Higley Hill Rd, which is why he had to walk so far today. The second photo is Town Hill Rd, which would have saved less than a mile, but would probably have added an hour to the walk. I was told that it was passable, but I turned around instead of forcing my way through the trees ahead. The Camry would not have made it this far as it was very steep and the road was covered with snow and ice.

The Red Roof Inn had rooms. There is also a hostel in VT somewhere, I forget where. I did an internet search for rooms not too long ago, didn't find anything really cheap. I'm having a hard time figuring out how anyone justifies $150 a night for a motel. I guess the privilege of not having anyone else staying in the motel and having the pool and exercise room all to yourself? I mean does anyone really think it costs $100 to vacuum a floor really good? Admittedly in the cheap motels poorly cleaned rooms are commonplace, but there really is no excuse for that.
Truth be told, Will and Brooke have been looking across to NH for the last couple of days and I know they would much rather stay in NH once they cross that bridge at 11 am today.
For people coming in from out of Keene, I suggested Panera Bread as a meeting place. As far as I know, there is not other chosen place.
My first Porc 411 seems to be cut off so I called back and left this there as well.

How long do you think it takes to get to the state line? I was thinking we should arrive at least 15 mins early. We want as many people there as possible for the video and photo op the moment he arrives.
Actually, I'd go ahead and head over as soon as you can. I'm just getting shoes on and crap and then I'm outta here. Got the dough in the machine to get it ready for rolls later.

Very nice video's I was waiting all yesterday for someone to post a video since I couldn't be there. I am glad will had a good turn out, and that he is finally in NH after 8 months of walking, that is some dedication.
You really got to respect Will for putting his mind to something that most people wouldn't think about, and that even most of those that would even think about it for a moment would never go about it, or finish if they did.
I think it really shows something about not only Will and Brooke but also all the people who have made the move even in more conventional means by car, plane, or boat. While the other people might not be talking for 8 months to get there, the changes that are required in there life typically take more than 8 months to setup, and could potentially have long and heavy influence in there life thereafter. Of course most of those influences due to the hard work, and excellent community in NH seem to be on the good side, which makes this movement so special in my opinion.
Here (http://gallery.me.com/mike.barskey#100378) are my pix from Will's arrival.
I'll be posting pix from Thanksgiving II later today.

And I'm working on it right now.
What's up with the last Free State Project news release coming out almost a year ago? http://www.freestateproject.org/news/releases I was reading it and thought that this was January (because it was so cold) and was trying to sort out how many days ago it was referring to, then realized it was still December. I know Will said he wanted to find work in NH having something to do with liberty - how about hiring him to work for the Free State Project?
I don't think the FSP is anywhere near the budget to hire full-time employees... yet.

Where is Will? I wanted to walk with him part of today or tomorrow as he passes through the Manchester area (and give him some shortcuts and road condition updates).
I don't know where he is, but, I doubt if he get as far as Manchester today or tomorrow.
I have been recovering a bit, having great conversations with new FSP friends, and in general not getting much work done. :) I didn't walk any yesterday (Monday) and am not planning on walking today. I'll walk again tomorrow if anyone is interested in walking with me. I might be walking through Manchester this coming Sunday.
We're planning on attending Taproom Tuesday at Murphy's Taproom tonight to discuss this week's walking plans.
Here is our YouTube video of the event:

We'll see you tonight, then!

There are a lot of people who are going to be saying that. Instead of doing Where's Waldo, a This is Will's Schedule would be nice.
I'll be walking thru Keene tomorrow (Wednesday).
I'll be walking along rte 9 tomorrow from where we left off (near west chesterfield) until Keene, where we'll then go on Arch St to West St then down Main St to Rte 101. I'll start at about 9am, and get to Keene probably around 2pm. If you'd like to join us and get updates about where we are you can talk to me at 603x852x5589.

Sounds good! Are you walking today?
If I really get my butt in gear on today's full-page comic, I might be able to meet you and the Keeniacs for lunch.
If anyone wants to walk or meet us for lunch or whatever, please don't hesitate to call me (number listed in last post on the previous page).
It sounds like there will be a lunch group at Panera and Will is going to put out a Porc 411 when he has a better idea of his ETA.
In case you didn't get the 411, ETA at Panera is about 2pm.
A little song for Will (Yeah, I know--now I think of it!):
I walked across the USA
Upon a freedom quest,
And as I roamed, I'd loudly say,
My Porc shirt on my chest:
Liberty!
Libertas!
Libertas!
And the government can kiss my
Liberty!
Libertas!
My Porc shirt on my chest!

:) Walked just past Keene today. Part of the way with Varrin before Panera, and then with 3 others after Panera. Great crowd at Panera - 10 total if I counted right. And thanks to Julia for our lunch!

Apparently. I called yesterday and told them I'd be walking thru Keene. They said they'd received a press release on it. I gave them my cell number but they never called back after that.
maybe a hundred calls to the sentinel would do the trick.

Their website was down (for me), the newsroom is 352-1234 x1400 or or 800-765-9994 (in NH or VT), but I usually don't like to dial 800 numbers, because they use ANI, automatic number identification, which is sort of like caller id, except that it is impossible to block, because they are paying for the call.
So Will told me at Taproom Tuesday that he wanted to be in Manchester by Sunday. Will, are you still planning on being in Manchester by Sunday? If so, is there an event or party planned around this? Thanks Will.

Because of taking off yesterday, I don't think we'll be able to make Manchester by this Sunday. I'll see how far I'm able to make today due to the forecasted storm.
For anyone interested, I'll be continuing to walk today from just past Keene to as far as I get toward Petersborough on Rte 101.
I hope Will found shelter before it started snowing.
Yesterday walked about 12.3 miles to the Dublin General Store.
Today I'll be walking thru Peterborough and then on further (but off Rte 101 at that point). We're getting a video ready to post this morning (I'm a bit behind ) so we'll be getting started a little late. I'll be walking through Peterborough at approximately 1pm, and we'll take a photo op at the FSP support-your-local-gang-highway sign. :)
As always feel free to give me a call if you want to join me and get an update on where we are.
Anyone want to join us for Taproom Tuesday? My plan for walking through Manchester is to do it on Tuesday, and time it to walk right up to Murphy's at the end of my walk, at 4pm. If you want to walk with us in Manchester let me know and Brooke can shuttle you back and forth.

The weather looks good for Monday and Tuesday as of now (no snow) so I should be able to walk for part of Manchvegas. I'll call Brooke on Monday when I know more about the weather.
However, I'm not buying your food this time at TT (not that it wasn't an honor to buy your food, I just think other people would like to share in the honor) so it is time for someone else at TT to step-up and try to prevent you from starving to death. You still look like you are a few days away from death.
I walked a short distance through Peterborough with Will yesterday. :) We stopped to take a photo at the FSP highway adoption sign. Trudging through snow is a bit like walking on sand at the beach. Downhill is fun too...

About 30 miles to Manchester, and I'll be walking at least 1/2 of those today (starting at just outside of Greenfield).

I ended up not going. It's going to set me back one shot, but I just didn't have it in me to drive all the way out just for my shot and then have to drive back super early tomorrow morning for my flight. Too much driving all in one 24 hour period. I just have to make an extra trip or two to Manch in the next month to catch up on my shots.
Sam, I like your thinking! After walking 12 miles, certainly he won't mind another 1-2 in search of the perfect pour. Murphy's is near the Beer-muda Triangle of Strange Brew, Shaskeen, and the Wild Rover. Milly's Tavern is another local legend. It would be fun to hit all of them before returning to Murphy's, which doesn't get too busy with the libeertarians until 6:30-7:00 anyway. Be sure to say hello, Sam, since I don't know who you are.

error, was there a reason you had the route going north of Glen Lake at Goffstown?
It was like that when I found it. Was definitely not intentional on my part.
Actually the bridge was out when I went through there a week or two ago and you didn't have any choice but to walk around.
Brooke has shirts that everyone walking can wear over their jacket that look something like this front and back. These are shirts that you can buy, with the printing just on the front.
Latest fashion trend in NH: The WFL tee shirt, personally autographed by Will Buchanan. This is the hottest collectible since Ron Paul criss-crossed the Granite State visiting his supporters. I'll sell my signed shirt (still unwashed) for $150, but you can get one yourself for $20 -- if you can catch Will and Brooke before they reach the coast.
Wow, the strangest thing but compared to you and with all those clothes on, Will doesn't look thin in that picture. Anywho, the back of Mark's shirt also looks great (because Will signed it too).

However, the shirts were washed in cold water to keep them from running. See previous photo.
What happens when they reach the coast? Try walking to Europe?
Nice pic!
Will and I chatted for awhile, very nice fellow. It was great to meet him 8)
Bump. Any end date and time?
I'm planning to walk some on Sunday Dec 28. I'll be starting from Murphy's as I haven't walked since Tuesday.
I'm tentatively planning to end the walk at the coast on Dec 31.
Ok, here's the plan. :) I have about 40 miles to go from Murphy's Taproom (where I last left off) to the coast. There are 4 days between now and the end of the year. So, employing some highly complicated, sophisticated math, I have determined that I'll walk approximately 10 miles a day for the next 4 days, finishing on New Year's Eve.
I encourage anyone who wants the chance to walk part of the Walk For Liberty to join us while it's still going on. Time is running out!
Here is the approximate route: map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=murphy%27s+taproom,+manchester,+nh&daddr=Auburn+St+to:Langford+Rd+to:hampton+beach,+nh&hl=en&geocode=FZ_mjwIdVo-9-yEm0taCxC1asA%3BFVDmjwId4Ji9-w%3BFS3dkAId2NLA-w%3B&mra=ls&via=1,2&dirflg=w&sll=42.984684,-71.471987&sspn=0.051738,0.054417&ie=UTF8&z=10)
Since that may chance, and since I don't necessarily know ahead of time what time of day I'll be walkking, the best way to meet up with us if you want to walk though, is to contact me on my cell phone, the number for which you can find in the last post at the bottom of page 25 of this thread (http://nhunderground.com/forum/index.php?topic=15993.msg277141#msg277141). I'm also flexible with times of day if you want to walk and there is a time which is better for you. Again, call me. :)
Almost there!
Will, you linked back to this thread! Please post your cell number again. Do you know what time you'll be leaving Murphy's today?

Is this confirmed, Mr. Keith? He is walking to Hampton on his mapped route. If he will change it to Seabrook, then Max could double-bill his party as a New-Year's/ Will celebration and actually get a sizable crowd there.
Can you/Max/Will make this happen? If so I'll bring (their)presents and extra provisions!
...and showgirls!!
anyway, I think that's when Malena and I will walk with him, too.

Coast-to-coast walk nears an end
By MICHAEL CLEVELAND
New Hampshire Union Leader
MANCHESTER – Sometime this morning, Will Buchanan will start walking toward the Seacoast. It's not too far now, and it's a heck of a lot shorter journey than when he started in April from Oregon.
Buchanan, 35, a supporter of the Free State Project, decided to walk to New Hampshire -- and make the state his new home -- to make a statement and start a new life.
According to the movement's mission statement, in part, "the Free State Project is an agreement among 20,000 pro-liberty activists to move to New Hampshire, where they will exert the fullest practical effort toward the creation of a society in which the maximum role of government is the protection of life, liberty and property."
Buchanan arrived in New Hampshire with his wife, Brooke, on Dec. 14. The two have rented part of a house in Henniker, which is serving as their home base. Brooke, 29, has been his support driver, following along in their vehicle as he walked.
"I guess it's kind of a transitional period in my life," Buchanan said in a telephone interview, as he walked along Bridge Street after calling the New Hampshire Union Leader on his cell phone late yesterday morning.
"I was working as a computer programmer writing programs for advertising agencies and I realized this wasn't the way I wanted to spend the rest of my life," he said. "It didn't seem really purposeful. So this is kind of a transition to a new life and moving liberty forward."
The couple had moved from Boston back to Brooke's home state of Hawaii, but knew they wanted to live in New Hampshire. When his wife suggested that he walk, Will jumped on the idea and decided to start in Oregon.
The goal for Buchanan is the Seacoast, in part because he started his walk from the Oregon seacoast town of Cannon Beach on April 14.
His plan was to walk 10 miles yesterday, sleep in Henniker, then return to the spot where he stopped on Sunday and start again. That spot, he said late yesterday afternoon, is a Getty station at the fork in the road where Main Street and Candia Road split.
He intends to reach the Seacoast on New Year's Day, but hasn't decided upon which beach his journey will end.

Will's after party will be at Max's. Seabrook Beach is only a little closer to Max's and Hampton Beach is better and easier for Will to reach so I still recommend it. It's up to Will.
You don't have to bring showgirls (but don't let that discourage you), as long as you show up and do some karaoke for us, I'll be happy.

I hope you can still make it, Cynthia and Malena!
If the Buchanans will be there, so will I, and Malena, and I'm bringing reinforcements(my back-up singers to drown me out!)
I will close the shop at some point on Wednesday to drive over to Hampton to walk an hour or so to finish your journey.(I'll call you tomorrow evening.)
Will there be other people meeting Will at his final destination, like at the NH bridge? Keith, will you being doing you polar swim as you promised? Really? You don't remember promising that? I have the audio around here somewhere...

I think Mark W is planning something. Mark was able to set-up like 7 other people walking with Will when he walked into Manchester and Taproom Tuesday. Look for him to post something about walking with Will to the Ocean.
Unless you join me, I'll not doing the polar swim on Wednesday. However, I will be doing it in Feb at the scheduled Meet-up event.

Unless a paper covers the end of Will's walk in Hampton Beach, this may be the last mainstream press coverage of the Walk For Liberty.

John C asked me to post that the fine article that was quoted above actually had a leader on the front page of the Union Leader (in case you didn't see the actual paper).

Hampton Beach has historical significance, as it was the location of the famous 1964 Hampton Beach riot. http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us/hampton/history/police/riots/fosters1999.htm

Another storm coming in tomorrow - you may want to walk 20 miles today and none tomorrow.
Leave your supporters some mileage to walk with you tomorrow! But w3 is right, tomorrow is supposed to be colder and snowier than today. Perhaps it can be just a mile or 2. :-) We'll look for your post tonight to confirm tomorrow's route and time schedule.

Will was calling the local Boston media today as I walked with him and he told the media that he would reach Hampton Beach at 3pm.
Folks, Will's Walk For Liberty was made popular on Digg 6 hours ago, chances are 1000s of pro-freedom folks have seen it. If there is anyway (without cheating) you can thing of to get it even more Diggs, please do it.

So 3pm is the arrival of the end. When do the festivs start? Where and what time does the day's walk start. Also what is the exact location?
Ok, here's the official scoop.
I'm planning to end the Walk For Liberty (http://walkforliberty.com) at Hampton Beach and get there at 3pm tomorrow (New Years Eve). It will be at the music shell / lifeguard station / info booth, which are pretty much the only structures on the beach, and are more or less centrally located north-south on the beach. They're across from D Street.
There might be several people walking with me at various points tomorrow. I'm starting from about 8.2 miles from the beach, at about 11:30am. Here is the map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Hampton+Rd%2FRT-101C%2FRT-111%2FRT-27&daddr=Ocean+Blvd%2FRT-1A&hl=en&geocode=FcTJjwIdhuXF-w%3BFfXBjgIdC4TH-w&mra=mr&mrcr=0&dirflg=w&sll=42.933301,-70.835638&sspn=0.021869,0.055275&ie=UTF8&z=12). If you want to walk with me, give me a ring at 603x852x5589.
If you want to see me finish the Walk For Liberty tomorrow and take a plunge into the ocean, don't be late!
Oh, and when we're done there we'll be heading over to Max's for the after-party.
Here's the forum thread about it:
http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=16509
See you tomorrow!
Will has 8 miles to go. He is due to arrive at Hampton Beach at 3:00 sharp, so he'll be departing on the walk about 11:30 a.m. to noon.
You can meet up with him anytime and anywhere along the route and walk a portion or the rest of the way to the beach. I'm planning on walking from 1:00 on, about 5 miles. Call Will's cell (somewhere in this thread) when you are near the coast, and he or Brooke will work out a place to meet.
I'm not sure of the exact route, but there aren't too many ways to Hampton Beach from 8 miles out, so just get close and they'll direct you to the trail. You can leave your car en route and then rides will be available to shuttle walkers back to their cars from the beach.
Then we go start the end-of-walk and end-of-year celebrations with champagne and Manchester Brewing suds!
PM me for phone numbers for Will and Brooke.
Mark
I think I hear an echo. ;D
despite the snow today, all systems are go! we'll be a little late getting to my starting point today - noon, or maybe a bit later. but I should still be able to get to the beach by 3pm.
Teri and I will definitely be there. If we run into problems (e.g., car accident, road blockage) we'll call you to let you know not to wait. Otherwise, I *really* want to do the Polar Plunge with y'all, so give me a call if I'm not there by 3:00p and I'll let you know how far away I am and you can decide if it's worth waiting. Thanks, and see you soon.
