Title: When should we hold Burning Porcupine 2009?
Post by: Russell Kanning on November 11, 2008, 06:02 PM NHFT
Here is a place for us to discuss when we should hold Burning Porcupine 2009.
Anyone that helped make Burning Porcupine 2008 happen and/or plans on participating this year should throw in their preferences.
I will set up a poll as we go along.
If you know people that don't frequent this forum, please add their input here also.
I think we should decide pretty soon, so people can plan.

I liked holding it during summer last year and right up to the full moon worked well.
Our solar showers also work better in the heat. :)

Anytime in July or August sounds good to me.  The full moon was fantastic when it wasn't cloudy as you could walk around in the dark without a light.

I was wondering why we hadn't chosen the date yet.

Sept 4 is the start of Labor Day weekend, which allows more porcs to fit it into their work/school schedules.
And the weather  was pretty nice this year at that time.
Russel, what's the sky forecast  for that weekend?

http://www.seasky.org/astronomy/astronomy_calendar_2009.html

the most interesting stuph from this site is an evening lunar eclipse on 8/6 and a meteor shower on 8/12,13,14 after the moon sets

it could also rain every day like last time :(

I like the September idea also, since the weather is nice and there are already some red trees, but July and August have some virtues.

Is it better to be on a holiday or not?
Title: Re: When should we hold Burning Porcupine 2009?
Post by: jerry on November 12, 2008, 02:21 AM NHFT
I think the holiday weekend has some advantage for those folks still doing that 9 to 5 thing.

The 8/6 eclipse might be disappointing , but I agree that a full moon is nice.
"Most penumbral eclipses are pretty uninteresting, since the Moon is still quite brightly lit, except in the most advanced stages. Still, in a deep penumbral eclipse, sharp-eyed observers should see a subtle but distinct shading across the Moon at maximum eclipse. This will be quite obvious in a total penumbral eclipse. "  (This one won't be total)

C'mon now, there were SEVERAL days without precipitation last time.  ;D

Title: Re: When should we hold Burning Porcupine 2009?
Post by: dalebert on November 12, 2008, 07:04 AM NHFT
You know, during Porcfest shouldn't necessarily be looked at as "sticking it to them". Grafton isn't very far of a drive from Gunstock and it's probably not that hard to do some of both. One could camp at Hoyt and enjoy the fun tent and just commute to Gunstock for certain events that primarily fall during the day on the weekends.

Title: Re: When should we hold Burning Porcupine 2009?
Post by: dalebert on November 12, 2008, 11:41 PM NHFT
I was just thinking today that we should have events going on at Hoyt farm during Porcfest and it should just be thought of as an extension of Porcfest rather than a competition. Think about it. It's not that far from Gunstock. People could easily camp at Hoyt farm for free and party at the Fun Tent and carpool over to Gunstock for speakers or other events that they're interested in. Most of the stuph is during the day on the weekend. People who are doing the bus tours could camp at PF during the week and then either move over to Hoyt for the weekend or just stay at Gunstock if they don't wanna pack up, and commute to Hoyt to party with us. This is kind of a no brainer, really. Sounds easy enough to do.

Whatcha think?
Title: Re: When should we hold Burning Porcupine 2009?
Post by: Russell Kanning on November 13, 2008, 02:09 AM NHFT
decent people are welcome to camp here next summer, including during Porcfest, they just need to get in touch with us ahead of time
If you would like to organize, or help with some events during that time, that would be great.

I've given it some thought.  It might be nice to have the showers running, a porta potty or two and some amenities for visitors and campers just before, during and just after Porcfest, and have an open  invitation to the folks attending PF to come and hang out in Grafton.

You know, you could seriously undercut the cost of campsites in Gunstock and put that money into a fund to enhance the facilities on the farm for future events, starting with some sort of permanent toilets and showers.

A Free Town Fest in June would give the bus tour from Porcfest somewhere to go TO.
I heard the bus tour to Grafton last year was a bit of a disappointment.
It would be a good opportunity to encourage settling in Grafton to incoming porcs.

I agree.
We could send the bus to all of the best locations in Grafton ... we could get them lost on the back roads long enough that the entire busload would just have to buy land and start living in the town. ;)

that sounds like a great idea russell just have them use a navigation system and their bound to end up on some back woods dead end road or class 6 non maintained rd. land prices will probably be cheaper by then id bet .grafton is a nice county in my opinion as a native all counties north of merrimack are woodsy and quaint small towns i think manchester has more pople than all of coos county which i believe has the most land than any county in NH. and is beautiful land .although i think grafton county is just as nice ive just always been a hermit and the more spread out my neighbors are the better i like them.but some need the bright lights of the city. i'll take a bonfire over city lights and ordinances any day especially without a permit.no matter what county you choose just get to NH. We need you and all liberty lovers..so come live free or die

I'm posting this here as well (just in case anyone missed it on that other burning porc post)

My children will be missing PorcFest this year due to the early dates. They will be flying out on June 15th (or soon after) and flying back July 27th.
I really want them to be exposed, as much as possible, to the liberty movement while they are with me.
They were extremely disappointed when I informed them they couldn't attend PorcFest. I think they might enjoy Burning Porc more anyway  :icon_pirat:

I'm just throwing that out for consideration and I realize I am only one voice in the wilderness :P

A couple of benefits of having it after PF, that I can think of:

1) It should be warmer
2) We can promote it AT Porcfest
3) Gives a little more time to improve the facilities

Sounds great!  :)

I'm just nervous about sleeping outside in a tent and I'm really afraid of frogs and toads. Usually I don't go out after dark during the spring and summer because of frogs.   I don't want to go home though because I'll miss out on a lot of fun.  Any suggestions?   I guess I could bring a flashlight to see if there are any frogs around, huh?

Rainey Rainey Rainey

I spent about 12 days up at Burning Porc
last year in a tent and was unscathed.
I was never attacked by frogs or toads
or dinosaurs. Your only worry should be not
tenting to close to me as I snore loud.
Flash lights are a good idea. These type are good cause
your hands are free to fight off werewolfs and stuff.  ;D

Yeah and I'm pretty sure your not going to jump out of the blades of grass and land on my foot.  :)   It has happened to me before, that's not why I'm scared, I was scared before that incident.   Now I just know it will happen to me if I'm out in the spring/summer in the dark when I can't see them.  :o

Thanks Pat!  I just can't stand the feeling or impending feeling of a slimy frog/toad on my skin, I know they don't hurt people.  Perhaps a cheap pop up camper or something would be better than a tent, then I can just stay in a certain perimeter, (sp?).  What do you think of that idea Pat?
I snore too sometimes and anyways nothing keeps me awake except fear which I will medicate myself for in the wilderness.  :D

Reading about shyfrogs kids kinda made me think that maybe we should market this towards the younger crowd, ya know? Early June makes it difficult not just for the younger grade school kids and their families, but for the high school students that are excited to get here as well. If we do try and promote this on a large scale, I think pointing out that it'll be ideal for the younger crowd.

If the full moon is on July 7th, my birthday falls two days later. I want Mark to make some more of those yummy beer sausages and bring them so we can have a party on my birthday and call it a sausage fest.  >:D
