Title: PiMP My Activism: activism role-playing seminar
Post by: Mike Barskey on January 19, 2009, 06:57 PM NHFT
I've started organizing the first PiMP My Activism (http://pimpmyactivism.info)seminar. PMP stands for "Practice Makes Perfect," and our goal will be to practice activism to perfect/improve our real-life performances. This is the realization of the role-playing idea (http://nhunderground.com/forum/index.php?topic=16676.msg280014#msg280014) I had.

Please check out the website (http://pimpmyactivism.info) for details. I'll update it continually as information changes, but since I've just thrown up a simple, static web page for now, we should use this forum thread to discuss and plan the event.

The residents of the Animal Farm in Grafton have graciously volunteered their house for a location, and I will be providing lunch for the event. I know Grafton is a little far for some of you, but hopefully the free food will entice you into coming if the activism practice doesn't. :) Also, it's gorgeous there!

Please post here or PM or email me if you're interested in attending.

Which of the following dates work best for you?
Thanks for your interest!

Note:  Feb. 21st was chosen.  KK

I wanted to host one seminar before the Liberty Forum so that if we also held a session at the Liberty Forum I'd know what I was doing a little bit - I'd have one seminar under my belt. However, I don't know how far in advance the Liberty Forum planners need a commitment, and I don't know if there's a fee to have a session/booth/room/whatever.

Feel free to take the ball and roll with this, or to help me with it when I'm ready.

I agree, though, that it would be awesome to have a 30- or 60-minute session of liberty-activism role-playing at the Liberty Forum where participants (people potentially considering moving to NH) could participate. Also, we could have a bunch of sessions at PorcFest 09.

Awesome, Mike! Thanks for picking up the ball on this one. I will definitely make an appearance at some of these. All dates work for me as I'm still unemployed. Also, I would be happy to help out with any preparations.

PiMP My Activism, nice idea Mike.
Sort of along the same theater lines Lloyd and I were discussing something similar just yesterday except we had a vision of "The Grafton Players" . A yet to be formed play acting group that would bring out the actor in activists / liberty loving folks.  We figured Grafton doesn't have a movie theater so we'd do satirical (comedy?) plays that "educate the masses" about freedom etc.
Having solved that problem we went onto world peace and by the end of our ride I think we had solved world hunger too... oh wait a minute we just stopped and got something to eat...never mind.  ;D

I think the acting, theater type things could be a powerful attractor for people.

Entertainment gets people to relax their resistance and open to accepting things. Satire can be a powerful weapon to lampoon.

Brad Jardis, as y'all probably know, is a cop in Epping, NH who is friendly to the liberty movement. I have not met him in person, so I will not vouch for him, but some people I do trust have spoken highly of him.

I communicated with him tonight about PiMP My Activism and he would love to participate. He said:
QuoteI would be more than happy to help people learn how to better interact with my species!
...
It would be benefitial for both the liberty movement crowd and police!  I'd be happy to do it!

What do y'all think about having Brad, a current cop, attend and participate? I think it should be unanimous: everyone attending should be alright with Brad attending, otherwise I won't invite him. Feel free to PM me your responses instead of posting them here. I am not asking for reasons; a simple "yes, let him attend" or "no, don't let him attend" is adequate.

It is also possible that, if we don't invite him to this first PiMP MY Activism seminar, we could invite him to future ones, like perhaps at the Liberty Forum (if we have a session there).

brad's reputation is pretty golden around the liberty movement in new hampshire....  obviously some of the outside-the-system folks want him to quit tho.

I thought it might be, but I thought it might be easy to simply add another session on short notice. I don't want to contact Dreepa until I'm sure this event will be popular or will even be worth doing. Hell, I may not even be around during the Liberty Forum and I don't want to commit to something under those conditions. If we miss it, no big deal: we can do it next time. Thanks for the info.

*The tail end of the pull over experience*

Cop: I'm just going to issue you a warning this time.
You: (Thank goodness, maybe this guy isn't so bad after all)

Cop: Do you have any drugs, weapons or large sums of currency in your vehicle?
You: No
(*fear* I know I have something to hide.)

Cop: So you wouldn't object to a search, would you?
You:  (Well, he has not been really aggressive, maybe if I go along he'll just do a quick look see around the drivers area... don't want to get him mad at me, could lead him to finding my contraband.)

Cop: It is for my and your safety, you understand.
You: Well, I don't know.

Cop: If you have nothing to hide, what's the problem. Look I don't want to make this hard on you, but I can you know.
You: Ok.

By now another cruiser shows up with a K-9 and they tell you to sit over to the side out of the way. Proceeding to completely comb the car, including the trunk.

Cop: Well, what do we have here. Put your hands on the hood of the car, you are under arrest.
You:  :'(

I'd try to make Feb 21 if that's the day.  Concerning a cop being there, never met him so I can't comment on him personally. Maybe he's a nice guy and all that but does he know the super secret password?  Rules are rules. The secret password rule is inviolate right? Would he agree to be blindfolded and strip searched before entering the confines of the secret lair? You know, for his own good?  ;D

it's too bad Mr. Jardis has a shiny piece of tin on his chest, from what I've heard of him he seems like a nice guy.  However, I didn't attend Porcfest because I was told that any 'liberty loving' police would arrest me if I smoked marijuana in front of them.   I could have gone to the Tent and got obliterated (I don't drink). . . but those doobies are just not allowed.

it's too bad, it would be nice to get an 'insiders' perspective into what thugs might do.  Unfortunately, it's not a chance I'd like to take to see first hand what a thug might do.  No offense intended of course.

Back on topic... sort of...

Anton you need to go about this stuff in the right order... invest 20 years of the good fight to change the laws, then you won't be kidnapped for enjoying a few moments of serenity. Of course maybe the powers that be will do just what they have been doing and lie, cheat and prevent the democratic process from achieving the results they do not want. And folks like Mr. Jardis will continue to do their job and be an enforcer for these same morally bankrupt monsters. Right now as we speak someone is being processed through the system for not harming anyone, including arguably themselves.

I'm going to attend Stuffmeister (of course I haven't really asked permission or anything, so if this is not cool someone can pm me). . . if you're interested in going I'd be willing to haul you up there.  Hence you won't have to drive uphill both ways in 6 feet of snow. . . but if we get stuck somewhere you might have to push.   I promise not to drive Masshole style. . . at least when we get out in the boonies.

No need, Stuffing! I've got a bunch of six-packs of my first batch of brew that I need disposed of. We can actually drink the beer and then have real open containers!

Jack might be doing Alt-Expo, which has a more flexible schedule.

Sorry, but I didn't catch this thread earlier - The AltExpo has a 3 room suite and we'd be open to the use of one of the rooms for this. PM me, Mike for details. We usually just ask for donations of the attenders as the rooms do cost us.

Also, I am waayyy behind on publicizing the AltExpo because of various things and I will be going to Texas next week for my brother's memorial service, so please talk up the AltExpo (and I'll get presenters list posted soon) and consider us in your partying plans, your room-crashing plans and your side sessions room needs! If someone has a topic and they need a space, we've got it. Plus we'll have a variety of A/V equipment available for presentations.

We'll have an open snack buffet, too, and just ask everyone bring something, go to the store and buy something or contribute cash so we can send someone to the store to buy something for snackin on.

Jaqeboy, did you have in mind having a PiMP session on one day, or one on each day of the conference? Or multiple sessions per day? The most I am interested in moderating myself is once per day, and even that seems like a lot - maybe just one session on Friday and one on Saturday.

However, I don't have to be there. Kat said she's willing to moderate a session, and perhaps others are as well.

Essentially, we offer a one hour segment for a quick intro session to any alternative-type topic - it's like speed-dating, only with freedom-related topics. Then, people can adjourn elsewhere for follow-on work. This year we have 3 rooms, so folks could use the 3rd room for longer follow-on sessions. That room will also be the video presentation room, and some other sessions are being held there. We'd entertain the one-hour session, then you're free to choose to do other work as available space permits - we'll try to firm up the schedule for the 3rd room, too. Tonight I'm going to work on the presenters' matrix. If you want to do a one-hour, just let me know what times you can't do it to give me the flexibility to fit you into one of a few time slots.

This is gonna be fun!

I had a lot of fun but will continue to feel each situation out act as pleasant as I can and try to drive away. Most of the time I get stopped in in Mass, anyway.
I don't see how being pleasant, in order to drive away ... and Mass stops, don't fit with the seminar. Some people will want to practice those sorts of situations.

Get a grip!  I didn't tell you to stop!

People who attended:  Could you sum up how you felt about the seminar?  Was it useful?  Do you think it will help you in future interactions with the thugs?  Did you have fun?

Thanks for the comments, Lloyd and Russell.  :D Anyone else care to add something?

Thanks Mike. Sandwiches were thoughtful.  I would have been a better cop if you'd have had a chocolate cruller there, but I made do with egg salad.  ;D

Knowing what you hope to accomplish is a good thing. For instance maybe you simply want the interaction to end asap or there may be times when you will be more assertive with your rights or trying to prove a point. In  cases that you  envision yourself as a freedom fighter, the cop may simply see you as a royal pain in the ass and may act accordingly. Not every situation has the same elements therefore some of our "answers" are more like guidelines and you have to decide which ones to use depending on the variables. There are no pat answers.

It would be helpful to me to know what "legal triggers" the cop can invoke to claim probable cause or to detain the driver.  A better general understanding of "the law" would help me to ask or answer questions from a cop.  For instance how can we "legally" walk away or end an interaction? Which laws require us to answer questions or provide I.D. etc.   Some of us may see things from a moral standpoint, yet we will be judged from a "legal" standpoint. Knowing the law wouldn't hurt and might come in handy if you are inclined to use their system against them.  Knowing the law isn't the same as agreeing with the law.

Also it should be pointed out how cops phrase questions to gain your "consent".  Body language and voice inflection are methods used to intimidate / coerce you.
This classic cop question catches alot of fish... "You don't have anything illegal in the car DO YOU? No? Then you DON'T MIND if I look in the back do you?"   I'm curious which answer(s) to use here.

Damn, you're so pushy, Kat!!  ;D I was going to wait until I got back from my walk, but here goes.

I thought it was very informative, and very helpful to observe the differences in responses. Free Libertarian was scary as a cop because he was so realistic. Tackle the World, and Facilitator to the Icon were also great as cops. Really, everyone who participated was just awesome. Geez, you'd almost think we'd all had real experience with this kind of thing. The critiquing was perfect as it allowed different viewpoints and suggestions to be discussed. Also, getting at the core, deciding what one's true intent in the situation was, made a difference is how each person handled their scene.

I really benefited from the question/answer portion that we engaged in with those that have gone to jail. Having at least some foreknowledge about the various situations I might find myself in some day took the edge off the fear of the unknown. Also, everyone's honesty about what they felt, fear, despair, etc., was very inspiring.

I think this was well worth the time and effort that everyone put in, and would appreciate doing it again. Kudos to Mike for putting this together, and mahalo for providing lunch for everyone as well.

Kat posted a link to the New England Nonviolent Trainers Network (http://www.nonviolencetraining.org/). There is a lot to read there, but I have found a lot of it to be helpful and thought-provoking.

A number of you might be especially interested in a section talking about nonviolent activists' experiences in jails (their site does not give an easy way to link directly to the article, so click the "Legal Issues" link on the left and then click the "Serving Time in Jail" link near the top of the page on the right).

I will also be posting a video soon of the questions and answers about jail experiences that occurred during PiMP.

I've always thought that the best answers to all of these questions were a variation of this:
"Let's see, I've got my lawyer's business card here - let me just call him and present the questions to him and I'll proceed according to his advice."

Then if you do call his office and there's no answer, just say, "gee, I can't really answer any questions until I speak to him. He really doesn't like it if I start on some legal thing without consulting him first, sorry."

Evan Nappen has a bright orange plastic wallet card with a "What to do if you're arrested" step-by-step basic advice guide on the back. I know you can pick those up at his office in Concord, 280 Pleasant Street, whether he's there or not. They'll give you a few, so you can distribute them to others.

The real trick here is to be armed with as much knowledge of the law as possible, to be able to invoke it where needed, and then to develop an acute ability to "think on your feet."  That last probably has more possible moves than a chess game, but there must be a way to teach the basics of it.

BTW, you can show video at AltExpo - we'll have a dedicated computer for presentations, with a projector and screen. May have a setup for videos in a second room, too. Just email Dan@AltExpo.org to let him know what your needs are.

We thought about a segment at AltExpo that we'd call "Jail Tales" just so people could hear what it's like to be inside, in case that helps allay peoples' fears.

Practicing was really helpful, and everyone's comments even more so. I've been rehearsing in my brain ever since, but it's not quite the same. I need to keep practicing in real life and out loud, and so I look forward to the next PiMP seminar.

When it's warmer, I'd like to rehearse a real car scene. I'll play a cop next time, although it will be difficult because I hate to be a mean guy.

I don't think you could practice what you did out loud.

Well, I wasn't completely silent, but I already mentioned that I took your guys' critiques under advisement. Next time I will practice articulating why I won't divulge information to the cop.

After the first PiMP session on February 21, 2009, Lauren, Kat, Russell, and I talked about our experiences in jail so others could ask questions and, hopefully, be a little less afraid when/if they face jail in the future; the unknown is always scary.

Here's (http://www.vimeo.com/3419416) the "Jail Talk" video. It's about 30 minutes.

I completely disagree.
I am not interested in learning their language and using it.
I don't look at life as a chess match.
When you beat a cop in a debate ... they might just start hurting you. If you are lucky they will say they are "just doing their job"

it is funny to think of all the various responses our friends will give the cops in pullovers, courtrooms, in jail, and on the street .... they are not very comfortable.

Hey, PiMP My Activism folks. Help promote your own event AND the AltExpo in general. The latest schedule is posted at http://AltExpo.org - click on tab that says AltExpo#3.

It's an all volunteer, co-operatively created event, so please help promote it so we get lots of folks on board! Please post on other forums, send out emails to your lists, etc.

We're also giving you a web page on the site so you can post info on your segment, either before or after or long after the event. I'll send Mike and Kat the info on that.

PiMP My Activism has a new website (http://pimpmyactivism.info)! It's the same URL (PiMPMyActivism.info) but is completely redesigned. It's now functional instead of just static and informational.

The new site has a calendar to notify of future PiMP events. It also has categorized videos of PiMP scenes so those who were unable to participate in the PiMP session (as well as those who did participate!) can view the practice sessions. And each video has a threaded discussion so you can comment on the scene and discuss what went well and what might be done differently, just like we do at the live PiMP events. The site also has RSS and email notifications of new videos and/or comments.

I hope this spreads the benefits of practicing activism to people everywhere. The goals are to make the practice sessions available as an archive/resource, and to create another forum for discussing the practice sessions.
