Title: Concord 1/26 protest against seatbelt law
Post by: Dave Ridley on January 21, 2005, 12:48 AM NHFT
1/26 WED 12PM I'll be "sign waving" against the proposed seatbelt law.   An hour later the House meets.  I don't know what's on their agenda that day, but they'll be there so I'll be there.

I plan to make a sign and stand at the following location where one can be seen by half the reps as they go in.
To find me and join the fun:

Head to Louden and Main, right in front of the bank....

Map:
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed=Z76Xp.p_0To5YKxER5cVNAeWnk4-&csz=concord+nh&country=us&new=1&name=&qty=

Most of the legislators will drive by me in the left hand turn lane on Louden.     Unfortunately since they are turning not all of them will see but this still seems to be the best spot and one gets seen by thousands of others besides the reps.    Protesting at the capitol itself a block south can be effective too but I'm no expert on that and I think you need a permit.   I think you can get that in the legislature building.

  Sign will probably say

FIGHT THE
SEATBELT
LAW

See you there...or not!

You could even keep track of how many people drive by without seatbelts on. :)

If we wanted to be a little more edgy...we could set up a seatbelt checkpoint at the entrances to the parking structures near the capital. ;D Give the polititians a little feel for our potential future experiences.

That sounds like a fun idea!

We could use a "Kill the Bill" sign.....you could use that one about every day. ;) Just add another sign with a bill#

Just making and useing such a sign and making it obvious that the bill number can be changed sort of, makes its own statement.

"Having worked as a police officer in New Hampshire for a quarter century and now as the New Hampton police chief, Sawyer understands the "Live free or die" mentality. But when it comes to passing laws that will help make all people, state residents and visitors safer, Sawyer believes the motto doesn?t really apply.

"Sometimes you need a little Big Brother," Sawyer said."

What if we were to take Russells idea (above) about following state reps and apply it to Sawyer instead?    i.e. show up at his office 4:30 pm and say hi we're here to check on Chief Sawyer and make sure he puts his seatbelt on when he leaves the station today.

I don't really like the idea of annoying state reps to make this point...since that would alienate people who'd otherwise be supportive.  Even doing this to the state rep who sponosored the bill would be a bad idea since the folks who are voting on it probably consider him colleague or friend.   They'd be alienated by that also.

But Sawyer is  different story.   He represents an organization and job description which is  relentlessly anti-freedom.  You *want* to alienate his kind from time to time.

I like that idea. Visit donut shops around NH and check for cop seatbelt usage....you know it "costs society as a whole when seatbelts are not used"  8)

This is my favorite one!

I also agree with not hassling the legislators regarding their seatbelt use or lack there of. It's definitely a funny idea though!

Russell I *don't* like the idea of hassling rank and file cops over their seatbelt use (although I recognize you could just be pulling our legs LOL)  But anyway the reason for that is many of them are supportiive if you don't alienate them.  Same thing with teachers.

Talk down the leaders not the employees...

Could get pictures of any cops on their way to the meeting who don't wear seat belts. The Supreme Court has ruled that if someone is outside, they are implicitly giving their permission to be photgraphed :D

cancelling this  ...I'm fighting a cold as of this morning :(   Also Don Gorman told me yesterday he thinks this kind of lonewolf protest at that location may do more harm than good, so it didn't seem like deepening my cold over.   Do plan to be at Hampton Thursday however.

Hi,

I am sorry you don't feel well.  All this nasty weather got you down?  :-[  The cold give you one?

You have been such a trooper to be out in the freezing weather so much it was bound to knock you about for a bit.  I hope that you got some rest today and stayed warm.  It would have been a NASTY day to be outside!  Make sure you drink plenty of liquids and don't think you are all better in a day.   ;)  You aren't superman...  Or are you?  LOL  Maybe you all are superheros, that's how you have been able to keep going at such a great pace and it takes kryptonite to get you down.

Have a great nite.  See you in cyberspace... until reality hits.
