Title: Topics where someone was convinced of voluntaryism?
Post by: memenode on September 22, 2009, 09:53 AM NHFT
Hi, I was wondering.. I've never yet been able to convince someone of voluntaryism on a forum, probably because I don't post that much and when I do it's mostly on pro-libertarian forums. So I find it hard to imagine how that could ever happen...

So I was wondering if anyone could link to forum topics from any non-libertarian or non-voluntaryist/anarchist forum where someone who held a firm socialist belief was actually convinced? I mean there's got to be honest people online who will give in once their contradictions and flawed logic is shown to them plainly.

I'd like as many links as possible. :) Thanks

If I didn't have work tomorrow I could start a new fake myspace profile, find an appropriate forum, and troll the fake profile into voluntaryism for the sake of apologetics perfected.  But alas.  It'd probably jump pretty quickly into ad hominems anyway.

Are you specifically looking for contradictions in statism, which if you're a voluntaryist kinda...don't you already know that stuff?  Or the right things to say to someone to convince them?

I watched the convincing of voluntaryism on myself through unrelated things I read in history, so I can't really admit to knowing what it would even look like on an internet forum.

I've never seen this happen in over 30 years of  Proselytizing libertarian philosophy.

I had people inform me on a few occasions that my webcomic site was at least a significant factor in pushing them off the fence. Now, as for converting a socialist, well... you gotta walk before you can run.

Yes. Mostly they become convinced the other people are idiots.  ;D

I credit internet forums for "converting" me though no single post did. I can show a span of posts on three different sites within a 10 day period though.

Repetition is very powerful. Tell someone that they saw something a few times and they "remember" it without ever being there. How many exposures before someone gets it? How many exposures to liberty has someone had already. Are contra principles still being fed at the same time?

I think reason and logic have very little to do with conversions. They are useful, though for justification after emotion has pushed us to a position.

Lots of people on this forum have moved from libertarian or minarchist in philosophy, to anarchism/voluntaryism.

I was socialist once, for the good of everyone.  Then I realized over a long period of time that the good for everyone was letting them do as they please.

I've seen it happen at least once on Twitter and once on Facebook. My twitter history is 10K posts long tho so the posts will be hard to find. The two folks who evolved are Liberty Snippet and Joel L. The former is on fr33 agents if you want to look her up. She was already into liberty but evolved to anarchism. The latter was a solid statist Obama supporter who had an epiphany but has gotten scared about all the ramifications and backed off a little. In fact, although we have known each other since high school, he no longer associates with me due to my habit of open carry. He's frightened he'll come up on a search of known associates at police HQ. LOL.

I have a third prospect I'm actively working on as well.
