A cash for clunkers plan for old woodstoves?!? Thats HORRIBLE! It would be a huge disservice to the community for these old woodstoves to be removed from the market.

How about the city stop taxing the shit out of all of us and then people could afford a new wood stove!

Because then you wouldn't buy the "right" kind of woodstove, Puke! And Mark tells me it's a really crappy woodstove they're trying to make people buy.

illegal to retail new... most now are smaller and have catalytic converters. I was in a million dollar home and they had bought one of these used to install.

Not the same type as in a car, since it's catalyzing different gasses, so it's not quite as expensive as a vehicular unit.

However, unlike those in a car, these wear out regularly, so it's not just the initial expense; it's the ongoing replacement cost.  And, of course, many remove and just don't bother to replace them when they wear out which, because the stove was designed to operate with the catalytic element in place, decreases the efficiency and increases creosote production.  So now we have stoves that burn more wood, produce more smoke, and create greater risk of chimney fires.

Because, if something's not broke, you haven't involved the government enough!

Isn't there one on 101 in Marlboro?  Check it out. Maybe you'll find the Mayor of Keene behind the counter.

uh oh, on the verge of being a 9-11 thread...

Really, Russell? I was under the impression that the majority of the steel from the WTCs went to China to become new I-beams for THEIR skyscrapers. (someone tell em that steel buildings cant survive office fires, they may want to build out of something safer...like bamboo).

I just bought a new woodstove without a catalytic converter in it.  It's legal everywhere except California and Washington.  It cost less than 1,000$.  I wish I lived in Keene, I could trade in my old stove and make money buying a new one.

Ours doesn't have one either. It is EPA certified to 1990 standards. Size might have something to do with it. We needed a small one.

From what I understand, they are not giving out checks for old woodstoves. They are giving out checks for the purchase of a NEW woodstove (probably more than $1000), so you wont be making any money.
