I never figured out why this thread is called "For Barsky." He may have been tricked to visit this thread once, but I'm willing to bet that he has not been back.

Some of us like spiders but, Mike doesn't.

It seems extremely mean to hassle someone about a phobia. Is it supposed to seem funny?

What am I missing?

Mike wrote me privately and said he'd heard about the thread, hadn't visited it yet but had figured out what was likely in it. He thanked me for a thread especially for him (the thank was in quote, but I'll take what I can get). He said we are still friends. I warned him to never actually visit the thread or he would not want me for a friend anymore. >:D

I still thought it was kinda funny. Maybe I underestimate the severity of his phobia. I have some phobias myself and I find exploring them in relatively safe ways (like horror movies about sharks) to be a nigh irresistible temptation. I guess I'm weird.

I should keep my camera handy near my computer. There's a wolf spider that often visits my office. I wonder if I can get a picture while holding a ruler next to it, so the size is obvious.

We have some ducklings in a box in the corner of the living room, letting them get a bit bigger before we transfer them outside. We keep catching bugs (including spiders) and throwing them into the enclosure. Free food, and the ducklings have fun: they're like kittens, whenever they see a bug to attack.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports that Albion police say the 20-year-old man was sleeping in the buff when he spotted the arachnid Tuesday morning and bolted from his home in the 2,000-resident town in Edwards County.

Sheriff Darby Boewe says the disoriented man apparently ran through a glass storm door during his escape, cutting his arms, legs and a finger. He was treated at a hospital.

Authorities fielded numerous reports of a bloody streaker and later found the man back at his home, where he'd donned some shorts.

I wish I'd gotten pictures at our new house in Lancaster, but the basement was full of spider webs with huge ghostly white spider carcasses. Some kind of mold had obviously grown on them.

Pat K and I were down looking at the furnace, when Daniel bopped in wondered aloud "what these things are made of, anyway." I kind of stared at him. "What... 'things'?" "These fake spiders! Why would anyone go to all this trouble putting up decorations in the basement?"

I just grinned. "Oh god, those are real spiders?" You could see the shiver running up his spine, and he barely managed to haul ass out of the basement without knocking himself out on a floor joist. ;D

While we were gone to the store, he grabbed a broom and the shop vac and took care of business. lol

She sought treatment at an Italian hospital for pain in her ear and swelling on her face, but was unable to find relief.

Once she got back home to The Netherlands, her ear got worse: part of it turned black, meaning the skin and cartilage was dead.

Doctors determined the culprit was a Mediterranean recluse spider, whose bite is known to destroy skin and underlying fat.

Victims are often disfigured for life, but this is the first known case of the recluse spider's venom causing damage to human cartilage.

In this case Dr. Marieke van Wijk was able to reconstruct the ear by removing the dead tissue and recreating the ear with cartilage from the woman's rib cage.

The report appears in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.

The blurb on that picture is wrong. Coconut crabs, while cool, are not the largest crabs. They're the largest land-living crabs. Actually, the largest land-living arthropods (so, larger than any spiders or insects, as well).

Japanese spider crabs are far larger than coconut crabs. Coconut crabs get up to maybe a three-foot legspan, and perhaps 10 pounds. Spider crabs can be twelve feet across, and up to 40 pounds. Lobsters have broken 40 pounds.
