Title: war is the new social activity

I played a lot of 'Combat' and 'Cowboy vs Indian' when I was young; that's where I learned that you and your friends will die in combat.

When we got our first color TV set, to tweak my mom my dad got us kids excited and us saying "Now we get to see the blood in Combat in color!"

Boys of course gravitate to the "power symbols" of weapons... sharpened sticks, M-16s or fighter aircraft, killing is just a game until the reality of it is realized.

Of course you could have the servants hold umbrellas for your party...

when did they do this .... was it the beginning of the civil war?

There is a Revolutionary War painting of the Battle of Bunker Hill where people are 'enjoying a nice day out'.

It was very dangerous to watch a Civil War Battle, but the TV didn't work yet, and it was better than watching the paint dry, and the horses would still be in heat when we got home... kind of like 'Jersey Shore' but with better looking animals.

That's just because you haven't been properly trained (desensitized) to become a "...highly motivated, truly dedicated, little green amphibious monster!"

Of course these young men will be haunted by what they've seen and done. Everyone calling them heroes, while on the inside they are ashamed and confused by their experiences, with no one to talk to that can relate to them. So they'll drink and drug the pain away. It's a Marine Corps tradition!

Quote"They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad," Palin said. "Oh, but you can't offend them, can't make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists."
That is so offensive on several different levels. Holy war, forced baptisms, hey torture is A OK!

Where is the outrage directed at her from the Republicans? Oh they can't be too pissed they secretly agree with her. Not shouting down this BS is the first step down that awful road the Germans ended up on.

"Nobody wins in a food fight", is very poignant.
Modern wars are meant to be fought, not won.

It is weird how remote killing on the one hand detaches the person from the killing while, at the same time, making it much more intimate than dropping bombs used to be.

I read an article that talked about all the PTSD the civilian populations in Pakistan suffer, never knowing when and where the drones will strike.

They created alot of subliminal stress for us as children 50 years ago during the cold war with the Russians.   We never knew if or when we could get fried by an atomic blast.   Looks like they're bringing that one back for an upgrade now.

"I no longer prefer blue skies," said 13-year-old Zubair, whose leg was injured with shrapnel from the attack.  "In fact, I now prefer gray skies.  The drones do not fly when the skies are gray."

GRAY SKIES  ("Blue Skies"—Irving Berlin)
COPYRIGHT MR 2015 by Sam A. Robrin.  Creative Commons, blah, blah, woof, woof.   Go ahead and use it (hey, I lifted the melody), but if you make a little money on it, I want some!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INPm4Jf5t_g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INPm4Jf5t_g)

Skies were gray, and I'd be dreading the rains,
Till we started hearing the sounds of planes.
Pilots fly only when the skies are clear;
Now blue skies make me feel blue from the fear.

Gray skies
Make me secure.
I prefer gray skies
Since the war.

Graveyards
Call to be filled:
"Come to the graveyards
When you're killed."

No one's safe when drones fly overhead
No one knows who might end up dead
You can't see your marks, high in the air:
   Grandmothers, kids—What do you care?

Great days—
Clouds dim the eye.
When we have gray days
Drones don't fly.
