Title: I got a job (for 5 weeks)
Post by: Raineyrocks on August 30, 2012, 09:17 AM NHFT
I'm going to be cleaning the bathrooms at a campground, very cool.  :D

I'm really scared because Daddy Long Leg spiders are out again  :o and I also get to drive a golf cart but I just have a feeling something bad is going to happen.  I'm really accident prone and I've never operated a golf cart before.  :P

This sucks, knowing Lloyd isn't going to comment on this post.  :'(

Is it really a campground, or is it an RV park?

My family camped at Swain's Lake in Barrington in the 1960s.  For three years, we stayed at Swain's Lake Park, where we paid $85 for the whole season.  There was no electricity and no on-site running water.  The only amenities of sorts were that there were a couple of bathhouses with flush toilets, and there was a small store.  We followed the Red Sox on shirt pocket, transistor radios and read by our Coleman lanterns at night.

The owner of that campground, Myron "Barney" Peabody, sold it to a young man named Spin Hemingway, but about a dozen families had falling outs with him and so they arranged to lease undeveloped lots from Barney on other land he owned across the lake.  The campground purchaser went broke and defaulted on the mortgage shortly thereafter, and last I knew, which was about 30 years ago, that campground was being operated under the name Len-Kay(e?).

Little known NH trivia: Brad Whitford, who would later become a guitarist and base player for Aerosmith, camped there in the early 1960s.

A more famous, and infamous campground nearby was Cedar Waters, with which I am sure many of you are familiar.

I don't know.  I've seen some bathrooms on campgrounds that were really nasty.  Having to clean them is anything but what I would call "cool".

Yup, it's a campground.  :)

That sounds like fun and the price is better than now that's for sure.

That's neat, (trivia)!

We used to rent a little cabin in Maryland for $30 a night on weekends and it was neat but I didn't stay there all night because you had to walk to the bathrooms and I was afraid of frogs and anything else that might be around.  I tried peeing in a plastic Solo cup but my cup over-floweth, (word?), too many times, ha, ha. :-\

Oh my gosh, me too!  It's like they are just waiting to attack me ! :o

I am afraid of frogs jumping on my feet and hopping up my leg so one time I was brave enough to "barefoot" it in Florida at night and damn if this huge frog didn't jump out of a bush and land on my freaking foot!

Ummm, okay but I think any job that I don't have to do a piss test for is very cool.  8)  I looked at the bathrooms anyway before I said I'd take the job and they aren't that bad at all.  I'm just afraid of snakes and spiders going into them.  Aren't snakes a possibility?  The entire campground will hear my scream if that happens. :o

Wow, what a paranoia day yesterday, holy crap, there were daddy long legs all over the entire bathroom facility yesterday!

I am so scared to go back.....but I will.   I took a broom and carefully got them off the walls and out of the sinks and then I used the broom to block them from coming at me so I didn't kill any thank goodness.  :)

I did a search about daddy long legs and campgrounds and here's a story I found, I feel sorry for this girl and hope she found out what the heck was wrong.

Geesh, I really screwed up this time.  :BangHead: ::)  I accidentally closed the padlock on a toilet paper bar to the up position and now the key can't fit in between the keyhole and the toilet paper bar.  ::)

Rick is going to try to bend the key so it will fit in there and open it up but if that doesn't work I don't know what else can be done except to take the "walk of shame" to my boss and tell him what I did.

Wow, I can't believe this, we went back up to the campground and Rick's plan to bend the key didn't work and then to make everything worse we checked the other 3 bathrooms and I did the same thing to the other padlocks on those toilet paper roll bars.

Does anyone have any idea of what else can be done, please?

You can leave little stacks of napkins on top of the toilet tanks, just like they do at McDonald's when they can't replace the secured toilet paper rolls there.   ;D

Maybe the guys at the camp ground have done that before and they have an easy fix for it.
Can you give us a picture so we know what the problem is?

I thought about that and it's an excellent idea temporarily so that people can wipe themselves, but I pretty much ruined the campground owner's toilet paper roll holders in multiple bathrooms and I owe him for what I've done.

I just found out today because I haven't had to put new toilet paper on the rolls for a few days now and while Rick was there with me he said, "Who was dumb enough to put the locks upside down?"  :'(

It's a big silver bar that holds 4 rolls of toilet paper and then has a lock on it.  I asked the owner why he locks the toilet paper and he said people steal the toilet paper if he doesn't keep the bar locked.  :-\   I asked him that question before I knew what I did and messed up everything, I figure there may be 3 days max before new toilet paper has to be put on the bars.  :P

According to Rick, he doesn't think anyone has ever done something like this so I don't know.  If Rick can't fix them I am going to have to tell the owner what I've done, I'm scared though.  The padlocks have, Master written on them and Rick said that I should've never put the word Master upside down.

I can try to draw you a mental picture of the problem.  :)   It's a long silver bar that holds 4 rolls of toilet paper and then there are 2 holes on the end of each of the bars, so the padlock goes through these 2 holes and then the hook of the padlock goes into the other end of the lock to lock the lock.  Lock, lock, lock, I know, I'm sorry I just don't know how else to explain it. :-[

So when I replace empty toilet paper rolls I unlock the padlock and slide the bar out, put the new rolls of toilet paper on and that's where I messed up by putting the padlock upside down.   Now there's no room to fit a key in the top of the padlock keyhole because it's too close to the top of the silver bar.

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be no.   I could always ask the owner but I'm trying to avoid this and hopefully Rick can fix it but I'm just not sure how.

Rick was thinking of cutting the part of the silver bars where the locks are and then drilling 2 new holes but I'd definitely have to ask the owner before altering any thing of his.

I'm trying my best to figure something out so the owner doesn't have to know how dumb I am.  What's your idea with the keys?  Maybe I could have duplicates made, I'm not sure.

Get a duplicate key... have one made.
Cut the key so that a little bit of the key sticks out of the keyhole.
Insert that part of the key into the lock and turn it with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Do the padlocks have 3 digit numbers on the bottoms, next to the key holes?  Master used to send out bulk quantities of "keyed alike" locks for low security applications, and used the same numbers so often that you usually could just go into a store and find one and buy it to get the key.  The instructions with the lock said to erase it, but for that matter, the number should be on the key.  I remember 216 and 150 were the two most common key numbers for their smallest padlocks.

When you say you went to places that copied keys, nowadays those are nearly all "home centers".  I'm sure a for-really-real locksmith could copy one, but not for the $1.89 or whatever that Home Depot charges.

If you want a key to cut and file, you can buy a replacement one here: http://www.padlockoutlet.com/Keys/

And here is the FAQ page on Master Lock's own site regarding key replacement:

You could also, if need be, cut the lock off and then replace it...  And, as was noted, if you can find locks with the same key, then that won't even be an issue.

Also, I've gotten MasterLock keys cut at Home Depot and a number of hardware stores.  Not sure why they'd be having an issue with that.

If it's this key, no one makes a duplicate except Master Lock.

But there should be two keys for every padlock.

Thank you so much everyone that posted!  :)  I am giving you guys all karma every chance I get on here :)

The campground owner was awesome, totally understanding and I'm so sappy I started crying, I don't even know why.  Brandie calls me an emotional toolbag, ha, ha!

Rick used a grinder to grind the slot from the edge to the keyhole on 1 side allowing the lock to slide to the other side of the bar and then remove it.  Then he drilled 2 90 degree holes from the original holes and removed the sharp edges.  (Rick dictated this because I asked him to, I really don't understand it; but it worked)

I will never forget to put the locks on the right way again, I swear!  :)

Oh boy, now there's a bat in the cleaning supply room! :o

A few days ago as I was unlocking the supply room I heard something moving in there so I quickly jumped over to the side when I opened the door.  I didn't see anything so I figured maybe it was a mouse and then the mouse hid somewhere, so as I was getting the supplies I needed I looked up about 2ft in front of me and there it was, hanging there; a bat!  A big bat!

I already had the broom, paper towels, and cleaner, so I quickly closed the door and locked it.  I ran with all this stuff in my hands to the campground office and I told my boss there was a bat in there, he started laughing.  Brandie's description of me, 'emotional toolbag', came into my head and I could see why he was laughing.  Anyways, he told me bats are great for eating bugs and I knew that so I totally agreed with him that it's good to leave the bat alone but I was terrified to go back.

Everytime I went in the room I kept looking to make sure the bat wasn't getting ready to fly at me but it was morning time so I knew I was kind of safe because they only come out at dusk, right?  I took my sons with me last night around 4:30 p.m. and it looked like the bats hanging nest, (?), was empty.  Is it normal for bats to go out at that time?

Ha, ha Pat !  ;D   Actually I have to do "the walk of the shame", it's not a bat.  :P  I went to the campground with my 2 sons, (Jon and Lil' Ricky), they both said that it wasn't a bat.  I didn't believe them but Rick went up with me the next day and said it's a gigantic spider web.

So I did some research on bats and I can't find one that looks like the webby bat shaped thing that I saw, bats just wrap themselves with their wings they don't make a web around themselves, I guess.  Now, I'm out 200 million dollars on the bet I made with my sons that it's a bat.

Oh well this is my last week of working at the campground.  I have enjoyed this job somewhat except for the spiders, it was nice doing something and earning some money.

Now I guess I will keep looking for a job with flexible hours and no drug testing, ( I feel this violates my personal liberty), preferrably paying cash too so no money is taken out for taxes. :)
