Title: LSF Video Promo
Post by: Tom Sawyer on December 11, 2012, 06:35 PM NHFT
Been thinking lately (again) about a video to help the children... you want to help the children don't you? It's for the children for goodness sake!

Seriously, a short video piece to promote the idea of "independent learning"... and to serve as a Liberty Scholarship Fund outreach.

Haven't you done enough?  ;D

Well, actually you have!  8)

I haven't really gelled anything much in my mind really; but a short piece that conveys the benefits of helping the next generation "learn" as opposed to being "educated". Perhaps featuring some folks that have been awarded a scholarship.

Independent learning sounds better than unschooling :-)

At this point I am withdrawing my offer to do a promotional video.

I'm mad as a hornet.

William is officially off limits for use in this realm.

My wife and I have and will retain control of the use of William's content. Ridley needs to learn how to listen to direct orders from my wife.

Are you mad at the LSF?  What happened?  Did Ridley use some of your William video?

Russell says:  I commissioned an ad from Ridley a while back.   Last message we got back from Ridley was that he wasn't allowed to any of Roger's footage, and that he hasn't actually made the ad yet.  That's all Russell knows.

This got started before you suggested doing an LSF video....don't know if that was the problem....

Hi Kat.  :)

Just to give a quick rundown.

I was away on business with the promise to talk to Russell when I got back regarding a LSF video and his supporting WatchWilliamTV with an ad buy (kind offer, made the boy smile). I had done some initial research on purchasing some pro produced graphic elements to animate a logo/tag at the end of LSF video pieces.

While away I often get little time to connect with home, when I did take the time in the middle of my work to check in and get a dose of home... E told me that Dave had sent an e-mail saying that Russell wanted him to promote my LSF video. So I was a little blindsided that I was going to be collaborating with him. I figured well when I get home I guess I'll have to spend time I don't really have to hash out what this would entail. Kind of was aggravating to have this thrust on me... but I tried to calm myself by think "Well Dave is often pretty good about spreading the word." Although this all meant in the middle of the things I was doing I had one more thing that was demanding my attention. Kind of ruined my call home and I was unsettled, something I can little afford.

He was asking to use footage from WatchWilliamTV and even acknowledged that it was a separate thing from any other work.
E said she would tell Dave to hold off doing anything, that I was out of town till the end of the week, which would give me time to get home, help William celebrate her birthday and in the middle of every other thing this time of year and the holiday season demands of me take time I don't have to deal with Dave who does not speak my language.

Well to Dave the end of the week comes on Tuesday...
He had sent a couple of e-mails that seemed to show he understood... then on Tuesday sends an e-mail that tells us he is running his video on Wednesday unless I get back to him. That is what I consider an ultimatum.

To top it off his video is just repackaging WatchWilliamTV content with an ambush interview, his narration and you handing a family their scholarship. The ambush interview is some unpleasant legislator refusing to talk to him. It is clear that Dave does not understand the mission and tone of the LSF. Whatever he wants to do is his business and yours, but I will not have anything to do with, or include William in any of the partisan political fight.

I have no time for unnecessary BS which would include teaching the zombie aesthetics, social interaction etc.

I have not produced a LSF video to be promoted yet, the Firewood Pirates piece is William's and I am keeping it separate and distant from as much of the socially retarded efforts I have had to watch go down. I had been reluctant to even post a link on the Underground because I have lost faith in the judgement of many. The last thing I want is to harm William and my efforts to reach a wider audience and do anything that will further marginalize him among family, friends etc.

I could get more personal in opinions of Dave and his work, but I've been trying to have a live and let live attitude. But, I will have to take a Howard Roark stand when it comes to the style and approach that I take to my work and my activism.

And nothing makes me meaner than advancing on my child and wife when someone is told to back off.

Thanks for your efforts Kat, sorry to be a temperamental artist type, but subtlety was not working. In addition William and E deserve to not have me angry and agitated over things that are unnecessary for me to be mixed up in.

Well, I can't claim to really understand, but I'm sorry you're upset.    Russell says he just wanted to help you promote the William videos, which are really cool.  He thought you wanted help promoting them.

 :)

This is a thread for a LSF video promo I was proposing to produce. Ridley had to suddenly try to beat me to the punch with my own footage.  ;D Used in a way I am actively opposed to.

Dave is often moving forward without thinking. He is often involved in "misunderstandings". In this case he was told to STOP by E and he continued, even being demanding about it.

Dave has on several occasions caused us potential trouble with his Les Nessman view of these situations. Please tell Russell to never point him in our direction again. I have no faith in his judgement... William's interests are best served without any involvement with Ridley.

Dave thinks everyone's footage is his... I have talked with others that have had him be demanding in this regard. The tone and style of his work is the opposite end of the spectrum from mine. I don't want his editorial opinion pasted on top of William or my work.

The mere fact that I have had to take any time away from the important things I need to do to deal with his nonsense is a problem.

I end up looking like the complaining jerk through no fault of my own.

If you someday do something for the LSFund, I am sure it will turn out great.
If you want to make a logo or something to post on your content, hopefully I can pay some to get it aired.
I am doing small ads with ridley for the lsfund. I came up with the idea of maybe comparing kids doing fun stuff with random bureaucrats. I cannot an official with the lsfund, but just try to help. Ridley asked for their blessing on the ad and asked for your content. When you guys said no he went forward with his video with his content. Hopefully the only harm done is now over.:-)

Take the time to read the LSF pdf brochure (http://lsfund.org/Brochure2012.pdf)

The mission and tone of the organization, presented in the brochure, is clearly different than a confrontational/politically tinged approach.

We were willing to put something promoting the LSF in front of Home Schoolers from across the political spectrum... the confrontational/politically style would be a huge mistake. Turned us off, what will it do to others?

This is the reason Ad agencies and other professionals are commissioned to represent organizations... it's a powerful emotive medium. Subtlety and nuance are the key to tailoring a message.

I was listening to an ad on the radio for a Christian group that sends Christmas presents to children of prisoners (in the dad's name). Wow, what a touching and moving ad... made you tear up. That is what gets people motivated to help.

I did work for the whole spectrum of charities... loved working with the film guys, beautiful, emotional images... carefully chosen words and music. About as far from a news style piece as it gets.

I am sure if you ever make something for the lsfund it will be very helpful.
I have never had any official connections with the org partially because I knew many people would be afraid of any connections with a clumsy radical like myself.:-)
I have never had any good ideas for the group, just done silly stuph like sitting at a table in front of Walmart in Keene with the cool sign roger of Maine made for us.

How many people outside the FSP see Ridley ads?
