Title: Grafton Apple Festival 2013
Post by: Kat Kanning on July 23, 2013, 04:15 PM NHFT
Sunday 9/29/13

We were thinking....since that Johnson guy volunteered to lead the parade...how about a movable contraptions competition?  It could be anything from kids on bikes to special contraptions that people build.  We could have prizes and stuff for different categories.  We were thinking in could go on the rail trail, or we could get permission to shut down main st. or some such thing.  What say you?  I think Johnson would have to do the baton twirling.

My vote would be for the rail trail.  Have to contact the owners, but something on a private road would be cooler than something on a State-run road.

I was thinking around the town green so everyone could watch from the church.
And/or from the rec field down the rail trail to the church.
And/or down the road away from the church and down by the river. It is nice and flat there. Or back from the beach around the back to the green. :-)

I was thinking we could start the prize packages by putting in a little cash for each prize and maybe we could buy pies off Becky to add. :-)

The Applefest occurs on the last Sunday in September

My bike is all tuned up and ready to go.

After all the back-and-forth about which was better, we settled on - always - the last Sunday in September.
This way folks can always know, from year to year, when it will happen.

And if ever there is weather so extremely bad that we have to postpone, we'd still have the equally-as-good-Sunday left for the "rain date."  8)

cool
I love the idea of some sort of bike thing.
So Jerry can you plan some event? I would be willing to start the prize money gathering. I am thinking like a $100 prize for kids, older kids, overall, and best theme. What do you guys think?
Also I will throw in the first $100 for the apple food contest.

Maybe down the road we could do a crazy race with the big machines that jim and lauren make and ride.

Jerry declines.  He doesn't have a clue (and can't afford to buy one) as to how to organize a bike event.
I nominate Pastor John as chief organizer of the cat herd.

If the path is not muddy we could go up the rail trail to the park .... Then race back down.

Yes.

I think last year we did noon (with some folks coming early to do last minute set up) until 5 (with some folks staying late to help clean up), which worked quite well.

Perhaps a bonfire at Hoyt (at 7) might also be planned again...

Every time I turn on a CB, I'm treated to an endless string of profanity that would make Doug Stanhope blush, plus challenges to pull over and fight it out, etc.

It's a long way from the '70s, for sure.

We don't use the cb because of what KB said
They talk that way on trucker call in shows and in person. :-)

Dang Rubber Ducky has a potty mouth?!  :-\  ;D

My brother and I were big time into CBs back in the late 70's. Peak of the sunspot activities... we would "shoot skip" to "The Gold Coast" California on 4 watts. Then there was the illegal linear amp, our voice got stronger, key up the D104 power mic and turn on the amp... talked to Guam etc. The best was with the military aircraft HF radio... I badgered them to send me to school on it just so I could play with it. Tuned properly I could get 2k watts out of it for short periods before it would burn up the tube... not to worry they had lots of money to waste. When I keyed that thing up on 11 meter (CB freq.) single side band... I had the voice of god... everyone wanted to talk to me.  ;D

Too bad the trucker aren't as friendly as they used to be... Heard on my radio late one night in the middle of nowhere VA. "Yeah you got a four wheeler in the hammer lane with a Smokey on his ass... Hey the bear can't seem to keep up." Looked up to see the blue lights receding behind me.  ;D

I keep a CB walkie-talkie just to hear what's going on if there's a sudden traffic jam, and decide whether to exit and find a way around it.

Quote... I had the voice of god... everyone wanted to talk to me.  ;D

Yeah, but if they were driving 4 Watt rigs, they could hear you but they couldn't talk back. If they were close enough to talk back, you were probably melting their radios. ;D

So:  Grafton Apple Festival is the last Sunday of every September, at Peaceful Assembly Church from... roughly what time to what time?  And what's the exact address? And the backup date in the event of terrible weather?   Where would a postponement announcement, if any, appear?  I'm making an ad for it and want to make sure there are no errors in it.

The idea of a transportation-devices-contest on a private road sounds fairly powerful and visual....if that's going to really happen I'd like to know before Sept. 2, by which time the ad will need to be finished and running.  I guess post the answers here if you know them....  and thanks in advance!

We could do the race next to the rec field.
We can
They have those but covers all over the place quite menacing.we don't. What is your proposed distance oh diminutive one?
860 main st or just Grafton Center on Google maps.:-)

How does this sound for the ad?

"Did you know that the Grafton Apple Festival is now on the same day every year? It runs basicaly all afternoon the last Sunday in September.... Their *may* be a "bizarre vehicle race."   And you can make some cider with their antique...uh... cider thing!  Either way...it's your chance to experience the freest town in the freest state.  See the video descrip for a link with details.  Jingle:  Grafton Apple Festival's great... it's the last September sunday date."

Here are the summarized details regarding September 2013's Grafton Apple Festival.  This is the post I will link to from the video descrip:

Grafton Apple Festival 2013

When: September 29, 2013...roughly 12p-5p.
Where: 860 Main St. aka Grafton Center aka Peaceful Assembly Church.  Grafton, NH
What:  Make apple cider with an antique apple press, participate in a possible "bizarre vehicle race."
Who:  Who knows?  But liberty luminary and civil disobedience ace Russel Kanning is expected to be there to provide the world's second most entertaining conversation.  A wookiee is expected to appear and provide no conversation.  And I think the creators of the first memorial to freedom martyrs will be there...as well as the memorial!   Last year there were multiple musicians, and I assume you can tour the very interesting church.
Why:  Experience the freest town in the freest state during New Hampshire's glorious autumn.

definitely going to be some sort of bike show and race.
How about an award for best in show and best in speed?

We can do my bobtailed volvo with 375 horses against the kid with 1 horsepower legs.
You can decide the distance and how fast we have to stop.

Cool  8) on John for posting the Tour de Shire, Exploring the Free State, New Hampshire, Grafton Apple Festival 2012 video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfdrTaRpYog) promoting another good time.

William and I were looking at google earth and thinking the small street on the other side of the green might work for Man vs Machine. Google view of green and church http://goo.gl/maps/JxbpC
The straight part of the street is 100+ feet long.

Also we were trying to decide what time for the race to happen? Later in the day to allow folks to have arrived?

We also were looking at the rail trail and wondering if Barksey's place, which is .69 miles from the church might be a good leisurely distance to ride for fun on the trail.

I like that. The offices are closed, but we could do something to show we support the church.

What?
I would think anything less than an hour long documentary is doing the church a disservice.

Plus, for consideration:
Lots of parking around the green during this festival ... and, Sunday is dump day here in Grafton and "everyone" uses the circle as the turn around ... so lots of traffic around green on Sunday...

Rail trail toward town offices includes underpass right near Peaceful Assembly Church. Good acoustics...

Well now, I have to tell the story.

It true, that cows are a lot harder to tip over than folks say.
But we all know that Jim is freakishly large and one frightening night
Jim rushed a cow standing side ways on a particular steep slope part of a farm on a hill above town. Well that cow tipped right over! Jim gave out a squeal of joy! But then to his horror the cow kept rolling down the hill! It had rained a lot that year and the soil was wet and loose and as the cow tumbled parts of the hill broke away and came loose, sliding down towards town! That's right and it drug every thing in it's path with it! Others cows , rocks ,tree's all heading right down main street! It was just luck that was the commercial end of Town and they rolled up the streets early there, but the slide took out the feed store, hardware store and caused an explosion at the gas station that was seen and heard in the near and far. That's why Johnson had leave, Hell his name really isn't Johnson, it's Houlderjurgen, he had to change it because they still call this the "Houlderjurgen Disaster" back there.

Speaking strictly as a "citizen" and not as one of the race judges.  I have several concerns and may request an internal review of the judging. To be fair and provide the best justice, the judges will review themselves...until then my concerns are:

The results of the steroid tests haven't come back yet.  Those bikers looked exceptionally well muscled.

The truck seemed sluggish and may have been slipped a mickey, by "race fixing profiteers".

The guy driving the truck looked like Russell, but how can we really know it was him?

What about building 7 huh, HUH?? ...oh okay, not that one...this time.

If anybody else saw any suspicious behavior please call 1-800-racejudges to anonymously report what you saw. Together we can fight street crime!

The woman from Concord who was at Applefest (her name, like many names, escapes me) asked me for the recipe for Apple Stilton Soup.  I am posting it here, if anyone sees her or knows how to contact her, please let her know.

3 Granny Smith apples
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
4 shallots, thinly sliced
3-5 cloves garlic, smashed (being Jerry's wife, I left these out)
2 Tbs. butter
6 sprigs each: thyme and savory
2 bay leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
6 cups chicken stock
1/4 -1/2 cup Stilton cheese
1/2 C cream
1 Tbs lemon juice

Peel, core and chop apples.  Over medium heat, saute apples and vegetables in butter until tender.  Season with salt and pepper.  Wrap herbs in cheesecloth and tie closed.  Pour stock over mixture and herb bouquet; boil, reduce to simmer until mixture is cooked through.  Remove herbs. Stir in cheese and cream.  Puree in batches. Add salt, pepper, lemon juice and more Stilton to taste.  Enjoy.

The woman from Concord who was at Applefest (her name, like many names, escapes me) asked me for the recipe for Apple Stilton Soup.  I am posting it here, if anyone sees her or knows how to contact her, please let her know.

3 Granny Smith apples
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
4 shallots, thinly sliced
3-5 cloves garlic, smashed (being Jerry's wife, I left these out)
2 Tbs. butter
6 sprigs each: thyme and savory
2 bay leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
6 cups chicken stock
1/4 -1/2 cup Stilton cheese
1/2 C cream
1 Tbs lemon juice

Peel, core and chop apples.  Over medium heat, saute apples and vegetables in butter until tender.  Season with salt and pepper.  Wrap herbs in cheesecloth and tie closed.  Pour stock over mixture and herb bouquet; boil, reduce to simmer until mixture is cooked through.  Remove herbs. The soup was good.   :D

Although a little highfalutin'... I mean shallots, only rich folks can have shallots. We are living off wild onions out of the lawn.  ;D

Wow, I don't believe I have been called highfalutin' before.  Hmmm.  I bet wild onions would be just fine in it, even if a little lowfalutin'  :)

Yeah, the first piece of music is Led Zeppelin's "How Many More Times".
How about the second piece of music?  Kind of surprising especially with the string section at the end.  ;)
