I rode the bus up to the Alta ski resort here in Salt Lake. It was 47 degrees up there. It reminded me of that spring day with the manmade snow at Sunapee.

I remember that guy. ;D He was definitely a crowd favourite. He was blessing everyone on his way down the slope. :D
I'm really looking forward to the race this year. We had a blast at the last one.
Hey Jim I thought I should check with carpet stores for some heavy gauge cardboard tubes for structural use.
We could use some heavy cardboard tubes.
It made me feel all Grandfatherly inspired seeing this.
Very cool the nice Pirates are going to help the kids out. Thanks Pirates!
Made contact with a place in Keene that is more than happy to help. We just need Johnson Trucking to do a pickup, due to the tubes being 12 feet long. Also he is setting aside large pieces of cardboard as well. 8)

That's a cool logo. 8)
Great. Grown-ups making cardboard sleds. That reminds me of the grown-ups making the commercial looking Pinewood Derby racecars in Cub Scouts.
A cardboard sled is what the poor kids in my neighborhood used because they couldn't afford real sleds. They used to go to Sundeen's appliance store and take refrigerator boxes out of their trash and tear off a side and use that. Four sleds to a box.
So, you're going to be there? ...or help finance the outing?

Not really... we are trying to show kids how much fun they could have if they came and joined us in the Shire. :D

I haven't paid much attention lately as my kids are all grown, but are there still the old school wood and metal blade sleds around ?
When I was a kid we used to see who could make the most sparks on a sled course we made in the woods. There was a rock out cropping we intentionally exposed a few inches of.
If you got going fast enough you could make a few sparks and live dangerously. This was before we discovered girls and other things, so B.B. guns, climbing trees and making sparks were all the rage. We never put anybody's eye out either.

Man I had a Flexible Flyer that was probably 20 years old when I got it. It was heavy gauge and the fastest sled on our hill. Kids and adults would come from all around to sled our steep street.
One winter we blocked the road with a snow boulders soaked in water barricade with an opening just large enough for a sled to pass. The next morning one of the kids sounded the alert that the plow crew was trying to breach the wall. We counter-attacked with snowballs and drove off the invaders. :icon_pirat:
Off course that was MD we didn't have as consistently reliable snows like you New Englanders.
yep they still have them
I have always been a tube man myself.
We could really make a metal runner sled fly on the snowpacked roads in Wyoming.

William won't give any consideration to being Gilligan.
I said, "Come on "Little Buddy".
He said, "That would make you the skipper."
I pouted, "I'm not that fat, yet." :'(
As to the sled, you ain't gonna believe it when it's done. The Johnson/Canario Team, well they set their sights high... once they built a Space Shuttle bigger than a Subaru Brat. They built the "Fountainhead" as a float, you guessed it, on a Subaru Brat. Their stuph was so outrageous, they inacted laws to try and stop them. I mean a guy can't make this stuph up.

This isn't the first time we've achieved positive notice for the FSP/Freedom Movement to the wider community.
Television? Is that one of those little boxes with the talking people inside? ;D

What's the North Woods equivalent of a Southern Hillbilly? I know there are Swamp Yankees. So what's the opposite of a Flatlander?
a hillbilly is a hillbilly. You don't need to distinguish between northern or southern.

I knew a guy from rural Ohio that used the term Hilligan.

Robo-Porcupine Conquers Mt. Sunapee
Mt. Sunapee Resort - Newbury, NH
SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 2015

2015 ANNUAL INTRAGALACTIC CARDBOARD SLED RACE was held at the Mount Sunapee Resort (http://www.mountsunapee.com/mtsunapeewinter/onthemountain/events/eventdetails/sledrace.asp)
The porcupine, mascot of the Free State Project (https://freestateproject.org), is a peaceful animal that can use its quills in self-defense. The Robo-Porcupine cardboard sled was designed and engineered by Free State Project early movers Jim Johnson and Lauren Canario as a homeschooling project. Under their guidance the kids, along with recent mover Ethan Glover, got together once a week to help make their concept a reality. Using only cardboard, duct tape, paint, and wax, the team under the guidance of Jim the Master Craftsman, transformed Creature Creator Lauren's design sketches into an amazing sled.

WMUR's show New Hampshire Chronicle (http://www.wmur.com/new-hampshire-chronicle) videotaped the event and interviewed participants. Their coverage will air on Thursday, April 16th at 7:00 p.m.
This isn't the first victory for the dynamic duo. As 2009 Cardboard Sled Race Champions (http://nhunderground.com/forum/index.php?topic=17481.msg293934#msg293934) they created the awesome Pirate Ship, Griffin, for the event at Mt. Sunapee also winning the Most Creative category.
In the past they honed their skills as internationally acclaimed Kinetic Sculpture racing World Champions. Winning the grueling pedal powered championship race in their artistic creation got them invited to travel to Australia for an exciting build and ride event there.
They came to New Hampshire from Nevada via New London, Connecticut where they helped the brave holdouts in Fort Trumbull in resisting the abusive Eminent Domain taking of their homes. Fort Trumbull is the neighborhood made famous in the landmark Kelo Supreme Court ruling. Lauren was arrested and imprisoned for three months.

Since moving to New Hampshire in 2006, they have not only helped build and repair homes for Free Staters to settle into, they are also major contributors to the fun factor in the Porcupine Community.

It was faster than we thought it would be. Robo-porcupine lost it's head, so it must have gone faster than it thought it would too.
Some talked of hearing a sonic boom.
very cool
it is funny to see how each sled actually goes down the hill

That's a relief. I thought the giant porcupine may have gotten indigestion from eating cardboard corn.

He's a porcupine... they eat plywood for goodness sake. His digestion can handle some cardboard.
I thought the great country philospher would know these things. ;D
Sometimes country philosophers like to be corny.
for a porcupine .... cardboard might be junkfood
well here is the ski report from where we almost had to drive though

this is what we avoided

this is where we came from

Kat drove through snow in Vail
we got though pretty well .... only cars were wrecked on I-70 no big rigs.

Free Grafton needs an Emperor. The former Emperor, Evan the 1st, is out doing the manifest destiny thing...
You're tanned and rested, how do you feel about kissing babies ? ;D
So true. If I can ever make it back there, I will have to run as the next Emperor. Is Evan officially the Emperor in his new territory or has Free Grafton started violent annexations.

goofy fun?
I think I can speak for the hardworking teammembers of team roboporcupine that they are insulted at the mere thought of this being "fun" their blood sweat tears and wax? went into this think. Anything less that total victory would be unthinkable.
as soon as they retract their statement and apologize to my clients I will call off the the cardboard missiles that are trained on their position.
Can't buy that kind of PR. Largest TV station in the state, aired during primetime. Now to live on in the web version.
Instead of anti-whatever folks annoying people the Free Staters can add to the Cultural Tapestry. Iconic imagery, the Porcupine. Lots of smiles and pleasant conversations.
But, I agree that we should perhaps build more of the Cardboard Defense Missile System... Walk goofy and carry a big cardboard sword is our motto.
Mister President, we can not allow a card board missile gap!

I think Iran is amassing cardboard boxes in an obvious attempt to build their own bomb. Don't let them tell you those boxes are for storing books and stuff in the attic. We need a coalition of the willing to monitor them. ::UN_Burn::
Isn't your new motto Jim
Talk softly but wear a big hat.
Well Solar Powered Bob .... I guess us Grafton folk just couldn't keep up with the arms race with those wild eyed free staters from Winchestershire on the Ashuelot. We needed a cardboard Graffy to crash down the slope in.

If we can figure out a way to keep Graffy's blow hole wet without damaging the cardboard it could be done.
man .... that sounds complicated. I know that Graffy can get to Sunapee Lake .... I don't think he can get to the slopes.
