We're chaining little Jim Perry to a "Welcome to Massachusettes" sign, right where all the MA people are crossing the border into NH to do their tax-free shopping. Help us free him and escape to NH! We'll be holding signs like "NH tax freedom!", "Escape to NH", "Free Jim Perry" with FSP url. We'll be handing out FSP literature to the MA shoppers. It'll be on Jan 16th, 2pm in Nashua. We'll get some maps and such out soon.

Little Jim Perry? LITTLE? I'm 6' 4" for crying out load... Little?
HAR HAR HAR!
;) Jim P. ;)
We will bring a couple of "white boards" for signs so we can change the signs from the Mass side to NH. :)
How about this one for next to the NH sign? "Honk if you love NH"
Cool idea.
On the FSP forum, fisher wrote that there is some kind of camera system which will
be photographing the area where we plan to do our stunt.
This is a long shot but I wonder if there is a way to stage this so that it is easy
for those cameras to see and for viewers to watch in NH.... Are there really
enough viewers for it to be worthwile? Also I'm wondering how many viewers there
are who watch the traffic video these cameras broadcast (is that what they do, they
broadcast it? )
Interesting. Maybe we could point people to the webcam sites. 8)

Are there traffic cams on 3A at the border?
Kat was thinking that we could come up with a custom flyer for this event. Maybe we could make something specific to the FSP and MA residents.
Does someone want to whip up something? Otherwise Kat will design a simple one. :)

I am heading down to the DMV today to officially get my driver's license in New Hampshire. I called ahead and they said I must turn in my old, MA license. I asked if it were okay to cut it up before they took it, they said I could - only after seeing it. They also asked why... so I told them my story... they said they couldn;t blame me and will give mt eh scissors to cut it with!
LOL
JP
Take some pictures of that and upload them to the NH Underground wiki or anywhere. :)
OK how about we add something to the "escape from MA" protest... Jim let me know if you'd be willing to do these things:
Once Jim crosses over into NH how about we have him do "five things in five minutes" which would be forbidden on the other side of the border.
Some of my ideas are:
) Drive 10 feet without a seatbelt
) Ride 10 feet on a motorcycle without a helmet
) Rip up his Mass Income Tax form
) Buy something without paying sales tax
) strap on a gun
) pump gas while checking his oil. In mass you can't do that because they've banned those little chit things that keep the nozzle trigger depressed. What are those things called anyway...

In my case, an empty water bottle . . .
We need to have one person at the NH border holding everyones guns and let them all strap them on when they get back to NH. 8)
It might be hard to put those all in 5 minutes. Maybe just stick with the big ones.
*Strap on a gun
*Tear up a MA tax form
*Drive without a seatbelt
*Ride a motorcycle without a helmet
all of these can be quick and on camera (right at the border) if they are there.
(Since we are going to a mall afterwards to party and hand out flyers) Buy something sales tax free

Well, I got my license yesterday. I official wait in line to submit my application was only 20 minutes... compared to the normal wait time of 2 hours backin Massachusetts.

We've got a little over a week before this event. Let's make sure we're all ready.
L'il JP, will the press releases go out this week?
I'll be responsible for getting JP's chains.
Hopefully everyone who shows can bring some FSP material to hand out. I will come up with a event-specific flyer, unless Jim's got something already.
Lloyd, are you available for this with your big sign and bolt cutters?
Seth Cohn offered to bring his cam and film the event.
Can someone volunteer to find out where the Nashua cams there can be viewed, if anywhere?
Can someone in Nashua drop by there and make sure there's a good sign to strap L'il JP to?
What else do we need?

Lloyd, are you available for this with your big sign and bolt cutters?
Yup!
For those that are scouting out the location:
Where should Lloyd park his van?
Where should we all park while this is going on? Should we park clear of the area to give visibility or should we all park right there to add to the insanity of the scene?
Hey JP,
Could you create a flyer that we could hand out during the chaining portion?
I have not created a flyer... which location are we doing this... the State Highway 3 or Route 3A? Anyone want to come by perhaps tomorrow Friday to scout the area with me?
JP
Is there a way jim could cut up his MASS DL during the press event? Or does that cut-up have to be done at the DMV?
Jim I have a Glock and holster you can use if you want to do the gun part. I'll plan on making sure that happens for you even if I can't be there (assuming you are cool with putting it on as we've been discussin). I do think we should concentrate on Jim rather than having 5 of us all trying to strap on guns at the same time....that will just complicate things without making for improved pictures.
We need to get the word out about this thing...those of you who can please spread the word via the email addies you have and by using the "be the media" guide at
http://freestateproject.org/about/essay_archive/BeTheMedia.php
Usually I do this but will not be able to do as much as usual this week because of work; also I have to work the day of the event so can't be there in person :(
We're going to need to let MA media know about this, especially in the towns near the event. Can I get a confirmation from someone that jim is in fact going to do 4 things in 4 minutes that are illegal in MA? Are we all agreed that this is a good thing for him to do?
I'll work up a press release if one does not already exist, should have it done today.
Hey I don't see a hwy 3a on the map near the NH border...did you mean Hwy 3 entering Nashua? At exit 1? about 1/3 of a mile west of Pheasant lane Mall?
Here is a rough version of the release, fill in holes where you can, makek suggestions, Jim lemme know if you are willing to do the things advertised here:
Man to "break" 4 MA laws in 4 Minutes
Jim Perry of ____ has always resented the many rules and taxes that regulate his life in Massacusetts. But on Sunday, he will do something about it.
In celebration of his 20th birthday, Jim will stage a colorful "escape." Chained to the ill-named "Welcome to Massachusetts" sign, Jim will break free and make a symbolic dash across the New Hampshire border, where he will finally become a free citizen.
Once in the Live Free or Die state, he will do four things in four minutes which would be illegal just a hundred yards to the south. These will include strapping on a pistol and ripping up his Massachusetts income tax forms.
Jim and his friends, part of a movement known as the Free State Project, hope his example will inspire other Massachusetts freedom lovers to make the escape as well. They are hoping to lure a total of 20,000 pro-liberty individuals to New Hampshire as reinforcements for the state's Live Free or Die culture. 6300 have signed up so far and at least 70 of those have already made the move.

We shouldn't do this on the freeway. We should do it on 3A Daniel Webster Hwy/Middlesex Road so we can park legally and be able to cross to the NH side safely and easily. We need the local Nashua guys to scope it out to see exactly where we should park and such.
Do we want to park on the side of the road to create more of a "scene"? Or all park at the mall so there is good visibility for sign holders and poor chained JP?
Kat will make the flyer JP. :)
We can promote this through the FSP, but JP needs to be the media contact for this one. :) I know you hate the spotlight, but what can we do?

Jim Perry of Nashua
<<Jim Perry of Nashua>>
That sounds strange, how can you escape to NH if you are Jim Perry of Nashua? Can we list you as Jim Perry of ____, MA or would that be inaccurate?
OK so this will be just a cross the street from Pheasant Lane mall, on the west side of the mall but on the east side of Daniel Webster (AKA Middlesex Road) ? And can I get confirmation ASAP that my press release is accurate and ok otherwise? I need to start sending it out soon to other web forums. I won't be writing any LTE's about it though.

This is basically JP party, so he can make the call about how the press releases look like. :)
Jim,
For more ink, the Salem Evening News (Salem, Ma.) might like to get a Press Release with a little local spin. Maybe include somthing like this:
One time Salem resident Jim Perry to make great escape . . . another (long time)former Salem resident, John Connell, joined the FSP in 2003, wrote a love song to New Hampshire called "Let Me Call You Home" on the 4th of July of that year, and headed for the boarder in early 2004 . . . Connel will participate in the Perry escape.
John Connell can be contacted at 603-890-0356.

Jim, Give me a call.
So Jim et al ... what is the final verdict for the actual location of the chaining to MA and freeing in NH?
3A is safe, but might not have big signs to use a backdrops. Hwy 3 has big signs, but has some complications. This is a puzzlement.
It is your call JP. I just want to set it in stone, so we can get the word out.

Bah! I'll end up killing myself on that! How about this: let's have someone give me a ride up on the motorcycle and then when we cross the border, I take off my helmut...?
JP
Sounds better :)
Here's a list of ways NH is different. No many of them could be used visually:
No income tax
No sales tax
No capital gains tax
No inventory tax
No tax on machinery or equipment
Some of the least restrictive gun laws in the nation
No helmet law
No seatbelt law for adults
No mandatory auto insurance
No regulation of raw milk sales
Some of those might be useful on the flyer.

If a sign is the only problem keeping us from doing this on a safe, busy highway, I can make a Welcome To massachusetts sign. I would need an image of an actual one. We can burn the sign, later, perhaps at the porcfest!

If we keep burning the icons of socialists, we may give new meaning to "YOU'RE FIRED."

What do you think JP?
I think that a "Leaving Massachussets" sign or a "You are now escaping Massachussetts" would work. We could design our own if that will be easier. :)
Now Escaping sound more... FUN!
JP
Should Lloyd make a sign that says "Now Escaping Massachusetts" of his own design using any symbols he chooses?
If we use enough signs, we could stage all of this on the Eastern shoulder of Daniel Webster Highway as people escape North out of MA into NH. :)
How does that sound?
I could design my own sign, but, a sign based on Massachusetts existing design would be more subtle, thus adding impact.
I like that idea, Lloyd.
I like the idea mimicing the real sign like you said Lloyd. We will try to find the states signs.
Another one "Now leaving Taxachusetts"
I still don't have enough info about this thing to even write an LTE or call talk radio promoting it. Main questions I still need answered are: Where precisely will it be
and
will Jim be able to do four things in four minutes that are illegal in MA? (specifically ripping up his MA income tax form, riding without helmet, driving without seatbelt, strapping on gun)
Once i know these things I can advertise this and so can others but its getting late.
I don't know exactly how many things that JP can do when he gets to NH.
We can give him a gun to strap on.
He can go into the mall and spend money sales tax free.
He can drive a car without a seatbelt.
He can ripe up or burn MA income tax forms
Not sure about motorcycle ride without helmet
Hey JP-
I think we should decide today where exactly we are going to be doing this, so people can plan.
My vote is for Daniel Webster Highway at the boarder. We could do it all on the Northbound side of the road. :)
I don't think ripping up Form 1 is illegal . . . but it is symbolic. Of course, if JP still works in MA, he goes to Form-1 NR . . . the Taxation with No Representation form.

I have Boltcutters and, maybe, a little chain, although I'm not clear how the program to chain 'Lli Jim and release him is supposed to go.
I do think it would draw more interest if we chained him up on, say, Friday and released him on Sunday. ;D

SUBJECT: Freestater Breaks his Chains from Massachusetts
Contact: Kat Dillon, Director
Email: kdillon@freestateproject.org
Phone: 603-357-2049
Website: www.freestateproject.org
Jim Perry is fed up with high taxes and the nanny state in Massachusetts. He had decided to join the biggest freedom movement in the country, the Free State Project* and break his chains. To symbolize this event, he will chain himself to a "Leaving Massachusetts" sign. Freestaters will then break his bonds and release him into New Hampshire. Once there, he will celebrate some of the freedoms one immediately gains when crossing the border: he will destroy a MA income tax form; he will drive a car without a seatbelt; he will openly carry a handgun, reveling in the freedom to protect himself and his loved ones. Members of the Free State Project will be there to welcome him to the state and cheer him on.
Date: January 16, 2005
Time: 2pm
Location: Alongside Route 3A (Daniel Webster Highway) , Nashua, NH at the MA border
* The Free State Project is a plan in which 20,000 or more liberty-oriented people will move to New Hampshire, where they may work within the political system to reduce the size and scope of government. The success of the Free State Project would likely entail reductions in burdensome taxation and regulation, reforms in state and local law, an end to federal mandates, and a restoration of constitutional federalism, demonstrating the benefits of liberty to the rest of the nation and the world.

SUBJECT: Freestater Breaks his Chains from Massachusetts

Sounds good.

I have ZERO interest in self-promotion, but if you want the Salem Evening News (probably the most read paper on Boston's North Shore) to cover this, all they need is the local interest stuff. Jim is a former Salem (Ma.) resident. I was born and spent most of my life there.
I did not wright my song for anyone but myself! But, I gave it to the FSP in the hope that (as many suggested) it might be useful. If it is mentioned that it can be found on the FSP site (perhaps with the link info), it just might get a few people to go there. Many folks around Salem would recall the (nick) name "Jack Connell" from when I played in a band (and played hockey, etc.) down there.
The other (weekly) paper there is the North Shore Sunday. I have been on the front page (with color picture) of both of those papers before: the SEN for the first Jury Rights Day, and NSS (standing out in the snow, dressed in colonial looking garb, protesting) when Clinton spoke in town. So these two papers might remember me. And, the SEN may remember Jim from LTEs.
Use me if you chose.
Without the local interest stuff, I think they will not cover this. With it, I think they will.
Thanks John, I'll send some info to the salem paper, mentioning you and jp.
Too bad we don't have some sort of prisoner/stripes outfit for JP to wear! Then he could slip on "free" clothes when he got to NH.

Jim,
For more ink, the Salem Evening News (Salem, Ma.) might like to get a Press Release with a little local spin.? Maybe include somthing like this:
One time Salem resident Jim Perry to make great escape . . . another (long time)former Salem resident, John Connell, joined the FSP in 2003, wrote a love song to New Hampshire called "Let Me Call You Home" on the 4th of July of that year, and headed for the boarder in early 2004 . . . Connel will participate in the Perry escape.
John Connell can be contacted at 603-890-0356.
You have this right?
Oh, and knowing how much we all like playing with fire, did we think of fireworks?
That PR looks GREAT to me!
Should send it to the UL as well. Should go nicely with those "Live Free or Die" articles they just wrote.... ;D
JM
Don't forget about the Eagle-Tribune!? Lots of Massachusetts exposure!
I spoke briefly with Steve Billingham, at the Eagle-Tribune, this morning.? He's the reporter who covers the Nashua area and is familiar with the FSP through other stories the Eagle-Tribune has written about the FSP.? I told him what was going to happen on Sunday and asked him if he would be interested in covering it.? He said he would be interested in receiving your press release, Kat, so he will know when, where, how, etc.? He said you can send it to:
sbillingham@eagletribune.com
Eagle -Tribune Publishing
100 Turnpike St.
North Andover, MA 01845
Phone: 978-946-2000
Fax: 978-685-1588

Eagle-Tribune Publishing has got its pulse on the northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire region. The company publishes Massachusetts daily newspapers The Eagle-Tribune (Lawrence), The Salem News, the Gloucester Daily Times, and the Daily News (Newburyport). It also owns a handful of other daily and weekly papers in the region.
Thank you Patty! I sent it to him.
Here's the revised release, for anyone who wants it:

Jim, I got chain that is coated in yellow, so that it would show up from a distance well. If you wear dark colors, it will help people to see it.
No one has contacted me from the media about it.

How would it look to put a slash through Mass and at an angle paste Tax over it?
You seriously rock, Lloyd!
I love that sign. We could use that one over and over. :)

Its a thought, but, would lose it's subtlety.
Lloyd, I cried with joy when I saw that! Thank you so very much!
JP
Yikes! Can anyone in the Manchester area arrange to pick up Seth's video cam from him today? He can't make it Sunday, but will let us use his camera. His email is sethcohn (at) gmail (dot) com
Great Job Llyod! ?I go for the subtlety.
Jim, ?Do you have any N.H. state flags in stock? I would prefer to buy one from you. ?But I need one for Sunday - as I am going to a birthday party - and I won't have time to make a nice big "Happy Birthday/Welcome Home" sign. ? ;)
(If you have a "Don't Tread On Me", I'll take one of those also.)
Let me know . . . and, I'll see you at the party on the border. ? 8)
"Does JP have a NH Flag?" what kind of question is that....he probably has his home wallpapered with them. ;D
You can count on that, Russell.
Good point! ?But, I must have one for a party that I'm going to.
All I have right now is a very faded "Don't Tread On Me" flag, and a (standard size) "PORCUPINE XING" sign.

I will have a Gadsden Don't Tread and a NH flag for you!

This is right near the Pleasant Lane Mall?
Yes. I plan on arriving about 1:30 to start setting up. We'll be on the main road outside the mall. Should be pretty visible with signs and stuffage.
BTW, I'm going to print out about a hundred of these. If anyone else could get some printed, it would be real helpful :)

Any ideas for good signs to hold up while Jim's chained?
CUT THE CHAINS OF STATISM
SAY NO TO STATISTS
STATISM = BONDAGE
STATISM SUCKS !
I HAVE A DREAM
FREE JIM
Oooh thanks, I think I'll do "Cut the chains of statism"
I like those John....so when are you getting to the event?
Does anyone know a motorcyclist that can drive JP around helmetless for a bit?
I did 3 signs:
Escape to NH (freestateproject.org)
Cut the Chains of Statism (freestateproject.org)
Honk if you Love NH (freestateproject.org)
My ever-faithful daughter is still coloring on them :)
(To the tune of Wizard of Oz)

Speaking of which, see you all soon!.
Wow, that was alot of fun. Thanks JP, for the entertainment!
Yep Scott, it was loads of fun. Yesterday was my best birthday yet. (Except for the time at my sixteenth birthday party that my dad's van randomly blew up causing the fireworks to go off.... that was great!)
JP
Good to see so many people there. I didn't even know JonM was going to be there. I loved John's big yellow flag.
Here are some of the photos...might add more later.

My plan is to write up the story of freeing Jim from MA, and since we didn't get any media coverage, I'd like to spread the story+photos around the internet as a recruiting piece.
Here are some more images that, fortunatly, I am not in.

Let me know if there's anything you would add or change. I'll be spamming internet sites with it soon. It's already up on the FSP website, BTW.
Great Piece Kat, except for the part where you didn't mention:

I think it is in there somewhere.

OOps!......I mean.....
Oh sure, it's mentioned along with a bunch of cardboard signs!
That's it Kat!
Attention everyone, we are all meeting at Kat Dillions house to protest her family because she forgot to mention Lloyds wonderful sign in her article write up! 10AM tomorrow morning in Keene!
LOL
JP
If I'm not there, go ahead and start without me.
Oh goodie, party at my house!
OK I've sent out the write up from this event to about a hundred libertarian and conservative forums/email lists. We've gotten maybe 300 new hits on the photos page, so people are reading the article and checking out the pictures. If you want to help and send it out to more forums, by all means :)
