Jim and Lauren's Barn is going up!
I've had many people offer to help with construction.
Well if you would like to help us raise the walls or shovel some dirt, or grill some cheese sandwiches before the whole thing freezes over come on out!
Saturday 30 Sept. and Sunday 1 Oct.
Daybreak to Sunset
Then Pizza!
Call for directions 603-239-8506
Warning: We have been warned by the local building inspector to cease and desist our unpermitted renovation.

When? :)
Yah, when?
Saturday, 30 September.
saturday, crap
Sounds fun ;D
It will be big.
What time can we arrive in the afternoon and still qualify for the pizza? ;)
Do you need us to bring tools? Shoot, I think I left my shovel in FL.
We'd be proud to help. :)
I wish there was a way that I could help with the barn! Do you have some land that you are going to cultivate? How high will the property taxes be on the land you've purchased?
I'm doing a research project right now the economic history of the U.S., specifically on dozens of geographical case studies of individuals from different professions during the Great Depression, how inter-independent living resulted in starvation and death, how independent living resulted in survival, how businesses adapted new strategies similar to some we've seen recently out of India's economic revolution, and which taxes must be immediately eliminated during the next depression in order to allow independent living alternatives once again which are currently highly discouraged in this country.
Just as the colonial British in South Africa, the U.S. has--arguably on purpose--created specific taxes that are working to destroy the possibility of independent living in the U.S., and the result will be disastrous during a depression unless one's desire to live independently becomes respected by the government.
The greatest economic fallacy of our day, that may end up causing millions of Americans to starve to death during the next depression, is that progress is measured by material wealth, regardless of those who have no desire for it, and thus the ultra-consumption culture is fed and manipulated to grow, through various artificial government regulations and taxes, at great expense to those who wish to live independently.
I think a major decade-long depression is a necessary and highly beneficial event given the existing current culture of ignorance, arrogance, laziness, and ultra-consumption; but in the current environment, the next depression may become an extremely disastrous case of democide unless people throw off regulations and taxes that prevent independent living.
Interesting post Mike .... but I think we are just going to be doing some construction. ;)
Construction in Winchester beats the pants off of government destruction.
What kind of stuff will we be doing/what tools might be helpful?
Hah! I found my shovel. I may not be very handy when it comes to construction and carpentry, but I know how to shovel! ;D
The main event is planned to be framing and raising four exterior walls.
But there could be installing of insulation, carrying bricks, and/or filling dirt around the foundation.
Bring warm clothing and work gloves.
We could use all the shovels and wheelbarrows you can muster.
Our local town selectman, Sue, has offered to upgrade our lunch from cheese sandwiches.
Oh boy, I hope it's barbeque weather. :sunny:
It's always BBQ weather, well unless it's raining really hard.
We can bring a wheelbarrow and shovel.

Oh, forgot to mention,
We got a cease and desist warning from the local building inspector Wednesday.
(renovating a home without a building permit) :blah:
So those unwilling to take part in an act of civil disobedience should not volunteer.
>:D
Well this changes everything...
I cannot be involved with this project, following all the rules is a requirement with us. ;D
OH really- Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Rut-roh. Pat's getting ready to install a boiler for you!
Woohoo! Even more fun!
Oh WELL then - is that what they say?
I'm thinking that helping my friends is MUCH more important than my schedualed 12+ hours of overtime (I'm sure someone "can" grab/cover that for me). All I'll need is that cheese sandwich & some direction.
I might not be all that smart about some things (maybe my freeinds will help me with those) - but I have PRIORITIES!
" . . . the existing current culture of ignorance, arrogance, laziness, and ultra-consumption . . ." I don't know. Maybe.

It is good to be buying and building in Winchester. Here is some real estate talk from a place I moved out of ... Santa Clarita http://thehousingbubbleblog.com/?p=1461 $600,000 for a 3 bedroom house? Ack!
Life is good for us peasants in the backwoods of NH. :)
I see a brick "bucket brigade" in my future on the 30th.
We can make this a 2-day event, Sat and Sun.
So more people can attend.
Whoa, guest quarters are a bit cold..and unfurnished... and 25 yards from a bathroom. :-\
In consolation we can have a pancake breakfast for overnighters :)
I'm sorry, but I'm forced to move this thread to "Civil Disobedience" in the name of honesty and openness. :jailbird:

And now you've gotten a written cease and desist? What a liar! If they require building permits that was bound to happen so I don't know why he misled you. All they care about is taxing the hell out of you really.
I remember when I built my house, their description of it was nothing like what the house was really like.
He said well now I'll have to come over there and look. So I made him come in and see it so I could get an abatement.
I guess he thought I'd back down, which was silly because you can't lie about how many rooms you have...
I eventually got about $1500 off my taxes.

Our system of taxation does NOT encourage people who maintain their property. It is punitive.
It does seem that homes are kept decidedly shabbier here than other parts of the country. It is confusing to us furriners when we see shabby, we think, CHEAP. NOT!
Cathleen
They also have crummy houses in South Central LA full of bullet holes ..... and they still are $600,000. I am sure Bill Grennon can explain. :)
Dawn had an explaination for the cease and desist warning.
Jim had a letter to the editor published recently that recommended Dawn for state rep.
Her political adversaries are trying to admonish him.
I think the government should cease and desist. It's not nice to threaten people. >:(

I've always like the mixed homes you see as you go along a road. You can see a nicely kept Mobile Home, a house covered with 'house wrap' going on 5 years, a nice old colonial, a great barn, a car up on blocks, a nicely manicured small house, a possibly, abandoned old house. I love it!

Absolutely! It beats the hell out of rubber stamped "planned communities"!
I love diversity, and I especially like the laid back attitudes. Maybe I will paint my porch and maybe I won't. The tax situation discourages any sprucing up.
Cathleen
Some good points here about our current tax meathod discouraging sprucing up, I'm going to start a new thread to discuss.
I guess we will be breaking Lauren out this weekend and building the house next weekend.
This is still on. I think we might ought to make it a potluck meal, though. I can bbq there, but I think Lauren was to be in charge of the food prep. We'll have to wing it.
We're hoping to devote every Saturday while Lauren's in jail to helping build her house.
We talked to Jim about this on Saturday. His only concern was cooking for all of us. When we told him we would all be cooking for ourselves or whatever, he liked the idea.
This is something we can do for Lauren/Jim since our hands are mostly tied in actually freeing her and such. This could also be theraputic for Jim .... actually accomplishing something. :)
Yeah we had already been planning on preparing food... :campfire: :bacon: :smoke:
I can almost smell the apple pies cooking. :)
I am concerned about Lauren and Jim being cold and uncomfortable this winter... it's time to get their shelter closed in before the snow flies. :tent: :pitchfork:
I was planning on climbing at Rumney this weekend. This might shape up to be a great weekend.
Got a spot for two more tents?
I am not sure where we could have extra people tent for this event.
I think they will get it buttoned up. We just might be able to get the whole next outside shell done. :)
Message me for directions. I have a little map made up.
Jim needs a small strip of foundation finished off (They had already done 3/4 of the bigger building). He is putting all the cement blocks in place and then plastering mortar on the outside.
So we can mix/pour cement on Saturday and put all the blocks in place from what I have seen. We should be able to accomplish alot on Saturday. :)
BBQ has already been poured/built by Lauren. That is how she practiced her mortaring skilzz.
It sounds like the reporter from Time will be at this event. So if you're itching to jump in front of a camera, here's your chance ::)
For the big barbecue, please bring something for yourself for the grill and perhaps some drinks, snacks. Several ladies have volunteered to make salads of various sorts.
Let's have some fun and do something for Lauren! :)
Will it be just cement work or woodwork? I need to know what to bring. Anyone in contact with Jim?
No woodwork as far as what we talked about last night. You could call Jim.
We will be moving earth, blocks, food.
If I had his number
Here's the official invite. His number is on it.

Come HOME,
Well, I stayed more or less anonymous at PorcFest, but I'm "cleared" to come up and help with the barn raising. I'll call (Jim's?) number on the flyer this afternoon. It is a few hours drive from RI, I haven't decided if I'm leaving tonight or early tomorrow.
I'll find a shovel somewhere...
I hope to meet everyone, "Dave from New Hampshire" included.
It's too bad Lauran won't be there this sounds like a lot of fun. :'( Well at we can surprise her with a nice finished house when she comes home :bigparty:
Yay, Dan! ;D
Dave didn't say anything about attending, though, so I don't think he'll be there. :-\
I had to work more than twice as hard as usual on my overnight shift last night, and I cannot safely keep going :( . . . sorry to back out of this, but I don't want to get hurt or hurt anyone else.
Get some rest, John!! :)
We might do this again in a couple of weeks.
Had a great time at the shindig... lots of progress. :)

I think just enough Beer was drunk as people had to travel. ( I think I should have just stayed up there for a few more days. I was missing the NH high as soon as I got up today) Lots of work was done, Mark was not bored ;D though he may be a little tired today. He and Ian wrestled with bags of cement that were almost as heavy as they are. William was a ball of energy and shares Russell's burning gene. The women were kicking butt every time I felt tired, I just looked at them and sucked it up. I was glad to see Jim smile alot during the day. The footing got poured and smoothed by Jim and Whip, block was moved into position and walls backfilled with sand. Lloyd braved falling into the hole many times, to supervise the dumping of it. The only thing missing was Larun brave Lass that she is.
How about we do some work at Shorty's basement on Saturday the 7th in the morning?
We could then visit the IRS office in Keene at noon and hit them with water or whatever hits our fancy at the time.
Then we could relax at our house with whoever is left.
With Lauren in jail, I can't get too excited about anything but getting her out or building their place.
Maybe we could do some stuff on Monday the 9th with PatK.
Saturday the 14th is open right now also.
Okie dokie, ;D
We got some stuff done there this afternoon. We finished off the last of the new foundation and poured one corner of the old part.
We will go there Saturday 10/7 and do more of the same.
Good job, knew I should have just stayed around.
Well ... it is so weather dependant .... we have to plan to try to help .... but then get thwarted by 2" of rain.
So right now ..... Saturday 10/7 in the morning
Monday 10/9
Saturday 10/14
On Saturday some of us can head to Shorty's place and build forms, move rocks/dirt/sand, and lay cement. Some will head to Keene for waterballooning at Noon.
At the end of the day Sean is cooking for us at our house.
If anyone can think of better ideas or changes of plans then let me know. :)
If the weather is bad we might be able to do some at Shorty's but not cement. Then we can hang at our place or something.
We got some done today. Tomorrow should be a repeat. It feels good to do something while Lauren rots in jail.

Partly cloudy forcasted for Sat. I have some metal cutting blades and a crappy skillsaw for cutting rebar. Many hands might be helpfull doing the rebar, forcing the cement down the little holes. I'm guessing the cellar will still have water in it.

Of Murphy's Law fame ie. "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong." (And at the worst possible time)

We will head over to shorty's in the morning tomorrow. :)
We are coming over, Elizabeth made an apple pie dog stomp pie.
We should be over about 10:30, some chores to be done in the morning here. See ya there. :)
It is gonna be cold outside. Our car's horn keeps chirping every once in a while .... I am guessing it is protesting against the cold.
The calendar entry says "cement laying", but I guess we can only hope for form building today.
William and I went over and helped Jim pour more concrete.
Beautiful day, and a good time moving Porc. Manor along.
We are planning on doing more on Saturday... not sure if we can make Pumpkin Fest.
Anyone else that wants to help is welcome to join in the construction. :)
I will be headed there tomorrow morning with more seeeement. Hollywood might be able to join me later.

im impressed the way you all have come together to do what needs to be done .screw the permits >:DI recently did some civil disobedience my self by pulling a culvert out of my road and replacing it without a permit .In Order for me to get a permit i wouldnt have just had to pay for the permit, pipe and fill, but also they told me i needed to get a wet land scientist and surveyor to the tune Of about $20,000 which i cannot afford so it was either civil disobedience or walk half mile to my house all winter. TITLE LXIV
PLANNING AND ZONING
CHAPTER 676
ADMINISTRATIVE AND ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES
Penalties and Remedies
Section 676:17-b
676:17-b Local Land Use Citations; Pleas by Mail. ? A building inspector or other local official with authority to prosecute an offense within the scope of RSA 676:17, and who, prior to or at the time of serving the summons, elects, pursuant to RSA 676:17, V, to charge the offense as a violation, may issue and serve upon the defendant, in addition to the summons, a local land use citation as set forth in this section. The defendant receiving such a citation may plead guilty or nolo contendere by mail by entering that plea as provided herein. If such a plea is accepted by the court, the defendant shall not be required to appear personally or by counsel; otherwise the defendant shall appear as directed by the court. The following procedure shall be used:
I. No local land use citation as set forth in this section shall be served unless the defendant has first been given written notice of the violation by the municipality. If the notice involves or includes a decision which may be appealed to the zoning board of adjustment pursuant to RSA 676:5, or to the building code board of appeals pursuant to RSA 674:34, such notice to the building code board of appeals pursuant to RSA 674:34, such notice shall set forth a reasonable period, as provided by the rules of the respective board, in no case less than 7 days, within which such appeal shall be filed after receipt of the written notice, and the citation shall not be served until after the end of such period. If such an appeal is filed, further proceedings shall be governed by RSA 676:6.
II. The local land use citation shall contain:
(a) The caption: ""Local Land Use Citation, Town (City) of ___''.
(b) The name of the offender, and address if known to the prosecuting official.
(c) The statute, code, ordinance, regulation, provision, specification, requirement or condition the offender is charged with violating.
(d) The act or circumstances constituting the violation.
(e) The place of the violation.
(f) The date upon which the offender received written notice of the violation by the municipality.
(g) The time and date upon which the violation was witnessed subsequent to such written notice.
(h) The amount of the civil penalty as set forth in RSA 676:17, I(b), which is payable by the offender for each day the violation continued subsequent to such written notice, up to a maximum of 5 days' violation charged in one citation.
(i) Instructions informing the defendant that the defendant may answer the citation by mail or may personally appear in court upon the date on the summons, and instructing the defendant how to enter a plea by mail, together with either the amount of the penalty specified in the citation, or a request for a trial.
(j) The address of the clerk of the district court, where the plea by mail may be entered.
(k) A warning to the defendant that failure to respond to the citation on or before the date on the summons may result in the defendant's arrest as provided in paragraph V.
(l) The signature of the prosecuting official.
III. Defendants who are issued a summons and local land use citation and who wish to plead guilty or nolo contendere shall enter their plea on the summons and return it with payment of the civil penalty, as set forth in the citation, to the clerk of the court prior to the arraignment date, or shall appear in court on the date of arraignment.
IV. Civil penalties collected by the district court under this section shall be remitted to the municipality issuing the citation. Whenever a defendant (a) does not enter a plea by mail prior to the arraignment day or does not appear personally or by counsel on or before that date or move for a continuance; or (b) otherwise fails to appear for a scheduled court appearance in connection with a summons for any offense, the defendant shall be defaulted and the court shall determine what the civil penalty would be upon a plea of guilty or nolo contendere and shall impose an administrative processing fee in addition to the civil penalty. Such fee shall be the same as the administrative processing fee under RSA 502-A:19-b, and shall be retained by the court for the benefit of the state.
V. The court may, in its discretion, issue a bench warrant for the arrest of any defendant who:
(a) Is defaulted in accordance with the provisions of paragraph IV of this section;
(b) Fails to pay a fine or other penalty imposed in connection with a conviction under this title which a court has determined the defendant is able to pay, or issues a bad check in payment of a fine or other penalty; or
(c) Fails to comply with a similar order on any matter within the court's discretion.
VI. For cause, the court in its discretion may refuse to accept a plea by mail and may impose a fine or penalty other than that stated in the local land use citation. The court may order the defendant to appear personally in court for the disposition of the defendant's case.
VII. The prosecuting official may serve additional local land use citations, without giving additional written notice or appeal opportunity under paragraph I, if the facts or circumstances constituting the violation continue beyond the date or dates of any prior citation. A plea of guilty or nolo contendere to the prior citation shall not affect the rights of the defendant with respect to a subsequent citation.
VIII. Forms and rules for the local land use citation and summons shall be developed and adopted by the New Hampshire supreme court.
IX. This section is not intended in any way to abrogate other enforcement actions or remedies in the district or superior court pursuant to this title, nor to require written notice as a prerequisite to other types of actions or remedies under this title.

From my earlier interactions with, LeRoy, I must beg permission from the town elders, so that what I do to My property inhances thier needs, wishs and pockets. I must also tear down one of my two abodes (that as those of you have seen, are quite sumptuous) after I have begged permission to do so.
I already had verbal permission, from LeRoy, to do everything that I have done so far, because it inhances my property value and thus thier pockets.
A well thought out letter to the editor in response to the article... did they even try to get your side of the story. Is their photog that bad or is it a hatchet job. Is this anyway to treat decorated veterans? Is Live Free or Die just a quaint old saying?
Every town has their petty tyrants and busy bodies... these folks need to get all the attention they deserve.

I found a really cool website -- called the Winchester Informed Citizen (http://www.winchester-informed-citizen.org/) that appears to be dedicated to exposing government abuses in the Town of Winchester.
While the Town of Winchester's official website contains almost no information of any value, the WIC offers all sorts of documents, etc. scanned as PDF files, including the Town's zoning ordinances (http://www.winchester-informed-citizen.org/).
It appears that you are accused of two violations:
(1) Article III, Section B: "No more than one (1) building or structure
shall be used for dwelling purposes on any single lot." (emphasis in original)
(2) Article III, Section F: "
Building Code: The Basic Building Code (BOCA) (IBC) as amended, Fire Prevention code (sic) as amended, and the Life Safety Code as amended, adopted by reference as permitted by RSA 674:53 (sic), shall apply.
The first accusation is obviously crap -- if the idiot code enforcement officer had merely read the title of this post ("Barn Raising in Winchester), he would know that what is being built is a barn, not a dwelling.
Furthermore, RSA 674:53 does not say what the building code says that it says. If they had bothered to read the RSA, they would know that the authorization for such an adoption by reference appears at RSA 674:51-a (enigmatically titled "Local Adoption of Building Codes by Reference").
As for the second alleged violation (the International Building Code), there is no statement of "[t]he facts constituting the violation" contained in the Cease and Desist order (such a statement is required pursuant to RSA 676:17-a(I)(b)).
You should file an answer ASAP: RSA 676:17-a provides:
Quote
V. Within 20 days after the date of service, any person upon whom the order is served may serve an answer in the manner provided for the service of an answer in a civil action, specifically denying such facts in the order as are in dispute.
and
Quote
VII. If an answer is filed and served as provided in paragraph V, further proceedings in the action shall be governed by the rules of the district court. If the order is sustained following trial, the court shall enter judgment and shall fix a time within which the corrective action shall be taken, in compliance with the order as originally filed, or as modified by the court. If the order is not sustained, it shall be annulled and set aside. If it appears to the court that the order was frivolous, was commenced in bad faith, or was not based upon information and belief formed after reasonable inquiry or was not well-grounded in fact, then the court shall order the defendant's costs and reasonable attorneys fees to be paid by the municipality. The clerk of the court shall mail a copy of the judgment to the persons upon whom the original order was served.
LOL...that was Dawn who did Winchester informed citizen.
This is why we need a PORC as Code Enforcement Officer. You would not have received this...
I will work on getting a Porc as code enforcement in every town in NH so we will be free.
This code enforcement officer reminds me of one from Kansas who turned out to be the BTK serial killer:

Met in our secret lair and discussed strategies... ;D
Standby for some fun, if things come together as I think they will. >:D
A few tidbits:
Section 676:17-b applies only to being taken to court. (I don't think fines can be levied without a conviction.) Nice catch about someone who is wrongfully cited being able to collect damages.
There are numerous "problems" with both cease and desists.
The attack on Jim was part of a 2-year assault on the infamous Sue Newell, the Free State Project, libertarians and anyone who doesn't think a handful of "elites" should control everyone and all the public money raised from taxes and fees.
The Winchester power elite hate the Winchester Informed Citizen site, because it exposes them for what they are. Sue Newell is co-web mistress of the site.
The Sentinel editor has been a gleeful partner in the villification of Sue Newell and is not the friend of truth.
A "free" sticky buns party for all who have been wronged by Leroy might be a lot of fun. The town will probably haul out its "permit to hold a function" form.

If you want to post or email the dimensions, I and/or possibly someone else could try to draw up something. I would need L & W of the building and new foundation. Hieghts of second floor, overhang, where the upper roof facet meets the lower facet and the top of the building. Also some detail of the change in the roofline on the RT. 119 end.
At least one of Johns images give a good view of the Ashuelot Rd end. I know I spelled that wrong.
I wonder if he's come around to the Underground and embraced freedom and the right to be left alone?
Anyone who is willing to back-off like that and admit when he's wrong can't be all that bad.
Either that or he's afraid of Dada hanging out in his office all day not saying anything or Russell and Kat throwing snowballs at the side of the building.
Hey, thanks Lloyd. I may have to take you up on that. I have made some rough drawings. I'll take them in tomorrow and see how bad Leroy hates them, and proceed from there.
That's how we spell Ashuelot here.
Didn't Joe (Maineshark) say that he's got architecture experience, and can provide drawings?
I've recently been approved to use the title of "Licensed Professional Engineer" in NH. So don't pay for one, if the zoning board wants a structural analysis. Send me a copy of the drawings (as-built, proposed, whatever) and I will check them and affix my oh-so-official stamp.. provided it's a sound design ;) Seriously, PM me if that becomes necessary.

Hey Spencer, thanks for the sketchup.google. That's a cool program. I didn't have time to master it before seeing Leroy. He did accept my hand drawings.
I recieved my written apology and a Building Permit. It cost me $288.00. Who's the winner? The written apology was nowhere near as contrtite as the verbal one was.
Lauren's going to bury me in the basement when she finds out I payed money to allow some to let me build my own house. But It will give her a reason to come home.
I'll need certified people to sign off on the electrical and plumbing, someday.
I bet you'd look good in cement.
I was imagining more an Edgar Allan Poe bricking you up... don't worry Jim, if you show up missing I'll listen really carefully for your scratching and dig you out.

Jim has done fine with the cement so far - and fortunatly all cement will be gone soon.
You'll have to get clarification from Leroy, but I think you are allowed to do your own plumbing and wiring, excluding the "box" for the electrical connection, which you already have. If not, I'll bet we can come up with someone with a license to take care of the "details."
The point is that the cease and desists were ordering you to stop doing something you handn't started. You have put the town on notice that you pay attention to things like that.
Thanks for being a bud, Roger. Keep an eye on Kat for me. She's being inscrutable.

BTW, if you folks have ANYONE out that way (say within a half-hour) who is 100% Pro-Liberty, running for state office, and needs help, I NEED to know (80% will do). Please PM me.
THAT WOULD GIVE ME A BIG REASON to be out that way during this election season. I made a promiss to be available to do the political thing, and have taken a week off from work for that specific purpose.
If I get out there this week, you can "probably" ;D also put me to work as a laborer on a nice Home.
Otherwise, I'll be back out soon after.

I Just got an apologetic phone call from Leroy. He said he will swap me a my sketch of the building for papers recending the 'cease and desist'. I guess its back to worrying how the buildings going to look.
Can't we just make a full scale model o nhis property made from wood, cement, and nails?
If you want to post or email the dimensions, I and/or possibly someone else could try to draw up something. I would need L & W of the building and new foundation. Hieghts of second floor, overhang, where the upper roof facet meets the lower facet and the top of the building. Also some detail of the change in the roofline on the RT. 119 end.
At least one of Johns images give a good view of the Ashuelot Rd end. I know I spelled that wrong.
I made a 3D model of the house on a program called sketchup.google.

And another view.

Looks good, Jim. Sketchup is pretty cool. You can scan in a hand-sketch, then draw your computer shapes right on top of it.

government permission to do just about anything/everything?

My (voluntary ;D) report (to the voluntary team) is that so far what I have seen indicates the crew seems to have a high regard for the well being of each other.
Please continue to look after each other.
We were wearing your green helmets the other day...
It was nice to have our noggins protected. :)
Do remember to choose a designated security officer and disarm each other according to OSHA regulations while you're working. ::)
Lloyd, Caleb, William, Elizabeth, Jim and I got things moving forward on the stud walls.
Sue stopped by to deliver her infamous "sticky buns" (I'm now officially addicted). ;D
We got the termite shield and insulation on top of the foundation. Lloyd engineered, and we built some heavy duty saw horses to mount Jim's groovy new miter saw (I'm envious, nice tool).
Took a little while to get a rhythm going, but we got two wall sections build and raised. Man, those are going to be strong walls. 2 x 6 16 in on center.
We also poured another section of foundation in the back room.
We ended the day around the BBQ grill. Sean stopped over and ate chicken and we had a good time.

2x6's 16" on center is standard construction in NH. Allows for greater insulation in walls.

TM...
To the fortunate small group of initiates who first experienced this wonderful treat... well it has already reached mythical status.
First created in Winchester, sometimes referred to as the frontlines of the NHunderground freedom movement. This cross species collaborative effort is a closely guarded secret that can only be experienced by frontline forces.

'It's Sister Jennys Turn To Throw The Bomb'
In an anarchist's garret, so lowly and so mean
Oh, smell the pungent odor of nitro-glycerine.
They're busy making fuses, and filling cans with nails
And the little Slavic children set up this mournful wail.
Oh, its Sister Jenny's turn to throw the bomb;
The last one it was thrown by Brother Thom.
Poor Mamma's aim is bad and the Copskys all know Dad,
So it's Sister Jenny's turn to throw the bomb.
Sister Jenny took the bomb and started off.
"Oh, mind you now," said Mamma, "to blow up Templehoff."
And so the party waited, while the dawn turned into day,
And the little Slavic children set up this mournful lay
Oh it's Brother Ivanovitch's turn to throw the bomb.
Sister Jenny's gone the way of Brother Thom;
Poor Mamma's aim is bad and the Copsky's all know Dad,
So it's Brother Ivanovitch's turn to throw the bomb.

We are going to have the UN Flag Burn there. Maybe even an appearance by Shorty.

Elizabeth has me in leg irons over here at slave labor camp. :(
Can't make it. ;)
Tell her if she lets you go there is a book in it for her.
Well, she let him go. In time to watch us finish making the biggest beam in Winchester, and drink beer. When the giant beam is in lace, the wall framing will be compleated and we can move on to making up the roof as we go along ;D

It all Jim's fault I forgot the book... he makes me drink his beer. ;D
It's true. I made Rodger drink beer. I am bound by an unwritten law and by the ten thousand years of human tradition of offering a traveler a cool drink when entering ones home (or Barn). And Rodger, faultless in his submission to another age old law, excepted the gift, because it was a gift. You shouldn't turn down a gift, it's rude to turn down a gift, it's like look, it's absolutely f'n free, I thought you would like it, why don't you just throw it back in my face and give me a bloody lip. Of corse that could lead to other things, so Rodger drank a beer.
So, when Rodger was done with that one, I offered him another one, I didn't know he was a bottomless pit. But then, I didn't care. And we got to talk'n and Rodger forgot the book.
So it is my fault. ;D
I am sorry, but it is going to happen again.
If we all just did what we wanted and broke unwritten laws there would be anarchy and people would have to ask for a cool drink and that would just not be right.
I hope Elizabeth will forgive me.
Yes it is true I only have two faults... I am humble and polite. ;D
Any plans for this week? Thurs or Friday look good. Partly sunny
Friday looks very good for Barn Raising, if people want to put up rafters. We have a lot of positions for people who might want to cut lumber, assemble rafters or install rafter assemblies.
Roof sheathing and wall sheathing needs to be installed.
We can also have a funneral for Nick and see a movie that evening. :happy1:
Did anyone call Nick's girlfriend?
;D
Chime.
We will probably be there. I should be able to help some.
No precipitation predicted for the next 5 days now...althought it looks like it's about to snow.
Thursday looks like the next good day. Today would have been great. I was sweating cleaning out the garage! Sat in a nice warm breeze.
What a great day.

I was working on the Barn, in my tee shirt, and I was sweating. :tshirt:

Barry White & Chris Rock Lyrics - Basketball Jones Lyrics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Artist: Barry White & Chris Rock Lyrics
Song: Basketball Jones Lyrics
Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones
Got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooo
Yes, I am the victim of a Basketball Jones
Ever since I was a little baby, I always be dribblin'
In fac', I was de baddest dribbler in the whole neighborhood
Then one day, my mama bought me a basketball
And I loved that basketball
I took that basketball with me everywhere I went
That basketball was like a basketball to me
I even put that basketball underneath my pillow
Maybe that's why I can't sleep at night
I need help, ladies and gentlemens
I need someone to stand beside me
I need, I need someone to set a pick for me at the free-throw line of life
Someone I can pass to
Someone to hit the open man on the give-and-go
And not end up in the popcorn machine
So cheerleaders, help me out
{cheerleaders sing repeatedly...}
(Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones)
(I got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooo)
{while Tyrone Shoelaces sings/speaks...}
Oh, that sounds so sweet
Sing it out
C'mon Coach Booty, Red Blazer, sing along with me
That be bad, honky
Yeah I want everybody in the whole stadium to stand up and sing with us
Oh yeah, sing it out like you're proud
All right, everybody watchin' coast-to-coast, sing along with us
Bill Russell, sing along with us
Chick Hearn, sing along with us
Chris Schenkel, don't sing nothin'
Oh, it feels so good
Gimme the ball I'll go one-on-one against the world, left-handed
I could stuff it from center court with my toes
I could jump on top of the backboard, take off a quarter, leave fifteen cents change
I could, I could dribble behind my back
I got more moves than Ex-Lax I'm bad
I could dribble with my tongue
Here I go down court, try to stop me
You can't stop me 'cause I got a Basketball Jones
Here I come
That's my hook shot with my eyebrow
Yeah, I could dunk it with my nose
I'm, I'm bad as King Kong, gimme the ball
I'm hot, I'm hot as..., I'm hot as..., I'm hot as... uh
Uh, uh, uh, uh
(Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, Basketball Jones)
(Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, Basketball Jones)
(Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, Basketball Jones)
(Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones, Basketball Jones)

I have enjoyed SR since it ran as a short story under a different title. The film is great. It plays on one cable network or another every couple of weeks. When I come apon it while grazing, I invaritably, watch some of it. Can't stand the scenes where innocent people are hurt or murdered(or, inprisoned for that matter), but, other scenes: Beer on the roof, The escape, The Warden realizing his goose is cooked, Red finding the money, and the last scene are all great. I guess they had to end it where they did, but, I wanted to see more. How does Red adjust to freedom? Why is the wealthy Andy working on that piece of crap boat?........

Quote from: Tom Sawyer on January 30, 2007, 10:10 AM NHFT
Dog gone Russell and his beer... that guy has a real drinking problem.
What, does he spill it all over himself?
What a shameful waste of beer.
No just all the salty language and bawdy drinking ditties.
Here is the ditty Russell taught me while we were learning to drink in Bishop School.
THE SEXUAL, LIFE OF THE CAMEL
The sexual life of the camel is stranger than anyone thinks,
At the height of the mating season he tries to bugger the sphinx,
But the sphinx's posterior orifice is clogged by the sands of the Nile,
Which accounts for the hump on the camel and the sphinx's inscrutable smile.
CHORUS:
Singing: Bum titty-titty bum titty-titty-titty bum,
Bum titty-titty bum titty-titty bum. Aye.
Singing: Bum titty-titty bum titty-titty bum.
The arse hole is here to stay.
The sexual life of the ostrich is stranger than that of man.
At the height of the mating season she buries her head in the sand.
When along comes the male of the species and sees this great arse in the air,
Will he ask if it's male or female or does he really care.
?CHORUS
'Twas Christmas eve at harem and the eunuchs all were there,
Observing the vestigal virgins combing their pubic hair.
When the voice of Father Christmas came echoing through the hall,
Asking what would you like for Christmas and the eunuchs all answered balls.
?CHORUS
In the process of civilization from anthropoid down to man,
It is generally held that the Navy has buggered whatever it can.
But recent extensive researches conducted by Darwin and Ball,
Prove conclusively that the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.
?CHORUS
But theorems were meant to be broken as in the postulate written above.
Regarding the plight of the hedgehog and the boundaries of sexual love,
For a crafty ol' naval bugger left his memoirs to Harvard & Yale,
Simply stating the fact that the hedgehog can be buggered by shaving his tail.
:occasion14:
Awww, that was beautiful. I especially liked the semi-porcupine reference.

We will not be hosting a movie night here tonight. The party will just have to keep going at Lauren's. :)
Caleb and I will be watching the game tonight.
We are heading out in a little while.
Gathering together tools I imagine I'll be there about 10:30.
We got something done .... and had fun.
Those Kanning's are some fine snow shovelers. :D
Thanks to everyone for all the help and generosity.
Everyone made my day entertaining with all their witty banter and amazing feats of skill.
Roger and Lloyd were in a framing frenzy, we couldn't get them to stop.
Cathleen and Don installed mega-shelves.
Russell and Kat shoveled snow and brought in firewood.
William and Kira helped fetch and carry things.
Elizabeth made mac & cheese supreme even though she had a sore throat.
Our town elders who brought sticky buns.
(Thanks especially to Cathleen who brought yummy fudgy moist brownies. Chocolate... drool.)
Wow... we truly are wonderful people aren't we. ;D
;D 8)
Hey I wanted to say thanks to Lloyd for the cool handmade wooden toys... :)
He amazed us with one were he balanced 6 nails on the head of the seventh nail. 8)
William is really enjoying playing with the toys... thanks Mr. Danforth. :)
Your welcome. Lauren, I found my keys. You canstop looking ;D
Tomorrow, 2/20/07, we will be laying a cement pad for our furnace fuel tank. For anyone who would like to come by and laugh and point or help out, the cement truck will be arriving at 1:00 pm.

Thanks to Russell and Tom Sawyer for each bringing a car-load of helpers.
Thanks to the Midget, Error and the Unnamed Teenager for coming along.
I'ts always a good day when no one gets hit with a out-of-control chute or embedded in concrete.
When the cement truck got here the serious construction folks jumped into the mix and shoveled it into the corners.
Most of us were just mesmerized seeing concrete pouring out of a big truck.
Ayuh, we New Englandas are easily entatained. It helps us get through the long wintas, Ayuh.
:) glad all went well.
But what do you mean there was no bodies
buried in the cement!!!
That's just not right, in fact in some NY and NJ area's
a body in the mix is required by code.
Just because we didn't TELL you there's a body in the cement doesn't mean there isn't one! >:D

nope
Was he the guy with the clipboard complaining about some missing papers? Uh... nope, never saw him in my life.
Anyone interested in doing anything this Sunday? I'll be passing thru after the LP. Perhaps some others will be too.

Thanks Lloyd... we have a good bit of gravel down for our driveway and with the steep grade it's not bad. The town road gets pretty badly rutted this time of year. But after this snowcover is gone it will dry out nicely.

See what happens when Freedom is allowed to get out of hand. Don't you know that the "regulations" say that when you "screw up" (and that is a direct quote from the Regs.) like that, it means you have to SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN until a "proper inspector" gets out to that site. Because - as we all know - accidents NEVER happen when folks have people looking over their shoulders.
It may be weeks 'till we can get a "proper inspector" out to that site in the wild west. Then, we'll need to see that you have had "proper paperwork" to help your friends. (Do you have proper "I Like To Help My Friends" papers?) We can't just have friends helping friends - and taking scrapes and bruises - without the "proper" paperwork; don't you know?
Oh wait! I'm looking at the wrong set of Regs. here. Please carry on.
And I hope everyone (especially the women and children) works/plays safely until I return!
BTW - The Regs. allow me some discretion here :o and I'll need to asses a fine!
We'll call it a paperwork fee, because we know how some folks don't like fines.
When I make it out to the wild west, I'll expect to collect at least one sticky bun and maybe a glass of juice. Then we can put this matter behind us.
;D
The irony of the situation was as Jim was sliding a ceiling joist, we had made by sistering two 2x4s, over I saw some nails stinking through and was saying we need to do something about that so that someone doesn't cut themselves on... ahhhhhhhh, thud. ;D
So see my safety fetish lead to the accident.
See, that's why we all NEED "proper" safety people. THEY can make the "important" decisions about what is safe for us and what is not.
Had you SHUT DOWN the entire operation for maybe "just a few months" and done a "complete" safety study, this MIGHT have been avoided. BUT REGARDLESS, we could all "feel" good knowing that all "reasonable" efforts had been exhausted . . . and that any injury was not the fault of the people looking over our shoulders.
Anyway, if I may paraphrase my dear departed grandmother (and I always loved her attitude about such matters): "I hope you didn't break the ladder. Please be more careful next time. We don't have that many ladders." >:D
We only had to torque the ladder a little to make it right, although I don't know if it has been tried on a level floor.
We threw in the whole kitchen sink yesterday.

And yet there was Roger climbing up and down the ladder with a sticky bun in each hand, one in his mouth and the stains from a forth coming thru his shirt pocket! It was sad. Sadder still, I ate one sticky bun. Probably a weeks worth of carbs!

That's right ladies and gentlemen, now you can escape your over-stressed computer infested lives.
Hi, I'm Facilitator and like Tom Sawyer I've discovered the stress-less and reinvigorating past time of the simple construction worker.
Imagine the simple joys of working with manly construction tools. Tools that have as their most complicated instruction, "Do Not Point At Face".
Imagine yourself carrying a well worn hammer and a nail gun, banging wood together, while advocating you current super-intelligent theory.
Now you can have a stress free day, working in the company of people who understand your varied views on life.
It's the Porc Manor's Fantasy Construction Camp.
You can sit, stand or help out and the boss doesn't mind. You can work on a project that doesn't have a time table, anyone who's really in charge or even a real plan. It's totally stress free.
So come on down and get both a physical and an intellectual rejuvenation at Porc Manor's Fantasy Construction Camp. ;D
Please!....Please!....Please!
Tell me where I sign up!
;D
I feel better already...
Now if I can come down off the days adrenalin, I'll go to sleep. ;)
You forgot to mention the Sticky Buns.
the good part of computer work .... no slivers
;D
We had a good time today...
Made progress, the rain held off for most of what we wanted to do.
Thanks to the duke and duchess of Porc Manor for their gracious hospitality. Chicken on the grill by the fire, followed by fireworks. :)
William had a good time...
Lauren took us on a bike tour of the local roadkill porcupine. ;D He was very impressed, if not a little spooked by it.
Kira and Kat's buried treasure was something he was very proud to show his mom.
Nice to see the crew and the later guests. :)

Saturday June 16th, more Barn Raising Fun at Jim Lauren's.
This maybe your last chance to have fun before Porc Fest.
Watch in amazment as a Barn is constructed before your very eyes.
Stand in awe as the wisdom of The Great and Power Danforth is apply to every angle and every feature as the barn rises.
See the nimble Roger prance from beam to as each roof rafter is placed.
And we are having steaks and BBQ Chicken.
Let me know if you don't want beer. ;D

Somebody else's Mrs. makes the sticky buns.
We have a tentative promise of sticky buns for tomorrow.
Until I have firm (I mean warm gooey) evidence, I cannot commit to this project.
I have to go with my union rep. Russell on this one...
No sticky buns... No work... ;D
Although I am ambivalent about eating the tasty, but, carb laden sticky buns, I hope they show up so I don't have endure Roger when he can't get any. Todays invitation to the: 'No Plans-No Class' construction school is crimping my Fest Prep time.
Hey Jim
Should I bring my miter saw?
Yes :)
We finished all the rafters today. Hooray!
Thanks to all the hard-working helpers.
Hope the food and beverages offset the sweating and straining and the dropping-of-boards-on-feet of construction.
We can put up the ceremonial last roof sheet on Wednesday when the Porcfest tour bus is visiting.
The barn and barn raisers are so beautiful I may cry.
:crybaby2: :flower: :grouphug:
;D 8)
It looks good ... we got a lot done today before the showers. :)
A good time and good grub :)
It is really starting to look like a house. 8) Well the shape of a house at least.
The band practice was suprisingly successful...

We had a bus load of Porcs stop by. A pancake and sausage feast featuring the World Famous Sticky Buns and real New Hampshire maple syrup. Sam Adams agreed to run as the female Libertarian Candidate for The Governor of New Hampshire. And we got more of the sheathing up covering the rafters.
Thanks for all of the great help on the house today. I'm happy to meet a lot of new faces.

For those folks that just can't get enough speechifin' the President of the Underground will be giving the Keynote Address.

The President of the Underground is scheduled to speak from 7:15am to 8:59am. :soapbox: :glasses7:
And then he will be speaking all day long. :blahblah:
Press should arrive early.
Now guys, let me talk to ya...
I wonder how El Presidente feels about being usurped by a 6 year old?
Did we use the diebold machines or paper ballots this year?
I think we drew straws.
I think mine was a flavor straw
when was the primary?
I feel like I somehow missed all the fun of primaries conventions and then a general election.
I say we start all over again.

Who was in charge of sending Russell an absentee ballot when he was in the 'hoosegow' ?
I think you're going to have to take that up with our balloting committee.
But, they will need to form a quorum
I second the motion.

Too bad... try drying well with a hair dryer. Sometimes clean water can be dried out and things will work again.
The hair dryer idea is a good idea, but the water filtered through asphalt, dryed leaves, bat crap and insulation. It was a very teak brown before it soaked everything. :shithitsthefan:

Participants need rubber boots, which I will supply if you will give me your shoe size by Thursday night.
Be prepared to be dirty.
The project should only take about three hours, after which we will have a sumptuous meal.
As an additional entertainment highlight we will give Porc Manor's premier showing of "Dr. Strange Love". :happy1:

Calling all able bodies to help the Duke and Dutchess of Porc Manor get a proper concrete floor. Sir Jim will need to conserve strength for the most important task of putting a nice finish on the concrete. The thing with concrete is there will be a peak demand of effort, cause "concrete waits for no man".
Hey Jim... I was thinking about a longer chute for the concrete, do they offer that or should we build something? Should I bring our two wheel wheelbarrow?

Also, if you're coming, it'd be helpful to let Jim know, so he can set his mind at ease that he'll have enough guys to do the job.

Kat and I can be there. I can do wheelbarrowing or moving cement (while in the mix). I have my own rubber boots.
This will be the last big thing that happens at Porc Manor. Everything after this can be done by 1 or 2 people at a time. If you want to see a lot of progress in one day this is the day. There will be at least 1000 square feet completed. :)
