Title: 5/21 fundraiser in Keene
Post by: dawn on March 06, 2005, 01:09 PM NHFT
Mondanock Educational Options Fair
5/21 from 9 - 1 at the Keene Recreation Center on Washingon St.

We are inviting private schools, homeschool groups, curriculum vendors, etc. to rent space to share their info with the public. Entrance will be free. There will be speakers, a bake sale, used book (video, games too) sale and stuff for the kids to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Wow!   :o  You guys girls are all over this!

Is this the beginning of the Keene Liberty Scholarship Fund chapter?  ;)

You're trying to focus on the Keene area, is that correct?  Should I call private schools around that area and promote the event?

Let me know who wants the list of contact info for private schools in NH and I'll send it to you in Excel format.

What does a local chapter mean exactly?
We could have one up and running after this event. 8)

It means that all money you raise remains in your local area.? We will take care of all the legal and financial issues.? You do the fundraising, with all the help we can give you, and you forward the money to Tony Lekas who will create an account for your chapter.? It's pretty simple actually.? :)

People are more likely to donate to a local cause rather than a statewide organization.? That's the whole idea behind it.

Most local funds will probably be controlled by activists because they have an interest in this cause.? School-based funds, run by schools offering scholarships to their own school, will appeal to their interests!

How about we set it up so that whatever money is raised by our stuff in this area will go to a scholarship for someone in this area?

Sounds good.  How large of an area are we talking about?  Would you like to be the Keene LSF or a larger or smaller area?  You need to come up with a name for your area (with "Liberty Scholarship Fund" in it) and a definition of the area you'll be covering.

We're setting up a meeting soon with a few private schools on how to create their own school-specific LSFs.  Send me your contact info and we'll set up a meeting to help you create your own town- or region-specific LSF.

I think this fair will appeal to peopl e within Cheshire County. That may be too broad, but OTOH, if it's only for Keene, then it could be kind of a bummer for schools that come from outside of Keene that wouldn't be eligible to have their students apply for the scholarship. Hmm, probably not too much of a big deal either way. Or even limit it to Keene Area LSF - naming the surrounding towns of Keene?

Regarding printing flyers, as soon as someone develops one, we would love to have a bunch of them printed to start distributing. Thanks for the offer!

Maybe we should start with the whole region and then let parts of the area make their own groups. It wouldn't make sense to leave any school or individuals out right now. :)

Here's the flyer for the edu fair.  If you're in the Monadnock area, it'd be helpful if you could print a few out and place in libraries, store bulletin boards, etc. :)

Oh, we're going to have a used book sale.  If you've got books you'd like to donate, I can collect them to sell at the fair.  All proceeds go to the Liberty Scholarship fund :)

BTW, I picked up a used copy of the book which (I believe) Ayn Rand called "the most evil book ever written." ?However, I don't think I'll be donating that one.

One never knows when we'll need a little somting to get a fire started . . . "We can no longer afford freedom" says b.f.skinner . . . so it sounds like something to put with my camping gear.

Kat, I have quite a few more books, I can bring up.? I wasn't sure if they had to be 'education' oriented or what.
I have a lot of old Sci Fi paperbacks and a ton of mysteries.? Probably some more stuff.
Are these OK?? What will you do with the ones you don't sell? (Dawn, has a BIG, dry basement! ;D)

Had you not read that before? ?Or just a re-read?
I donated/distributed/sold several dozen copies - - - back in the day.
That book was a turning point for me. But that might just tell that I am younger than Llyod (and maybe Pat?) - but older than many.

Never read it before, no.  It was good.  I agree with him 99.999% :)  I was thinking of writing to him and asking him to come to NH.

Lloyd:  other books are fine.  I'm not sure what I'll do with the ones that don't sell.  Maybe sell them to a used book store or return to donators, if that's what they want.  I'll probably buy the liberty oriented ones myself.

Yes, the cases. I forget how many were supposed to come in a case but remember getting at least one exta in at least one case . . .
When I first read that book I put it down somewhere in the middle of it (for about two weeks) because I knew that if this was true - and it clearly is - that my outlook and actions needed adjusting . . . obviously I picked it back up.  (How am I doing so far?  :))

Some years later I gave a copy to guy at work for his wife to read . . . she was a speed-reader, and the next morning he had a mesage from her - that I should read Atlas Shrugged . . . I took Ayn Rand (whom I had not gotten around to reading) off the shelf  . . .

Anyway, interseting that a former (what was he) Secratary of Treasury would write the forward to Ringer's book . . .

I'm going to be working a table there Saturday. I'll be promoting (and selling) the book that I edited in January, Phenomenal Physics by Dr. Russ Harkay of Keene State. It's a 400+ page guided inquiry approach to physics through simple home experiments perfect for home schoolers. We'll also have an expanded edition out soon, which will also contain question sets to go with each section. People who buy the current edition will be able to get the question sets e-mailed for free. I'm also going to do some promotion of my upcoming book, The Light of Alexandria, and tutoring.
Could probably bring some books up with me if you need it and they can get here, Kat.
See you all then!

312 Washington St., Keene.

If you're heading north on Main, veer off toward the right off the traffic circle.  Washington is the street with the police station on it.  The Rec. Center is a big brick building on the left, several blocks past the traffic circle.

Well... I have actually survived quite nicely being in the same vehicle with both you and JP so I would have enjoyed the opportunity to do so again, but alas you have "responsibilities" elsewhere.   ;) . Good to know you take yourself, eh hem your duties seriously.

Of course it is. She can't apply to someone else the same makeup she would apply to herself. She can sell that same makeup for customers to apply to themselves. But if she should apply to someone else the same makeup she would aply to herself, which is the same makeup the customer could buy and apply to her own self, it suddenly becomes punishable by a year in jail.

Hence my smiley.  ;D

We had a nice time at the Educational Fair today.  We got to spend time together which is always a plus.  I got to talk with Mike on the way to and from the fair and our talks were good.  It is nice to get a chance sometimes to have smaller groups sometimes and be quiet and know what people are thinking about deep subjects like Ghandi and such.  I know that he (Ghandi, not Mike  ;) ) isn't someone I can talk about in larger crowds, but get me off to the side and then I can get deeper on a subject.

All in all, while we didn't get the turnout that we would have liked it was good.  It is always good when we are working together for a common goal.  JP gave a good little talk on why we should get the government out of the education business and give the choices back to the parents and why they are perfectly capable; and refuted the excuses that people have made for years as to why it wouldn't work.  It didn't change the minds of several people there, but perhaps it gave them food for thought.  I felt he did a fine job and he did get a nice round of applause.   :-*

I appreciated everything everyone did and I am sure that the feeling is mutual.  After all we are the mutual admiration society.   ;D

I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces again soon.  Hugs!

This is great!  We're definitely on the right track!  It's better to do these types of events regularly than to overanalyze your actions and wonder what should be done.  Experience is more important than education!

And as for you Pat, we wish you cjavascript:void(0); ;)ould have been here too.   :D  And as for Ghandi, you don't have to know anything about him, you would have been very welcome in any conversation whether you knew anything about him or not.  I didn't know much about him until a few weeks ago when JP and I went to Kat and Russell's and watched a movie about him with them and Kira and Dave.  He was inspiring to say the least.  I can see why Mike wants to pattern his civil disobedience after him.

Oh and by the way Pat, it was nice "visitin' with ya" and Dave too of course, after Mike's protest.  Didn't want you to think I forgot about you.  I am just not much of a poster on here lately sorry.   ::)

You would be surprised at the wisdom of Dilbert, Pat.  Prediction 15: In the future, technology will continue to make our lives harder and many of us will be delighted about it.  A truism if I ever heard one.  LOL   ;)

:DHi all - I know this is a little late, but I got some pictures up on the gallery about the fun we all had at the EdOptionsFair!! Yes, the turnout was less than stellar, but we have learned from that and are moving on to the next time. Unfortunately I made no money for the LSF (none at all actually...) from the face painting, but it was fun! Thanks to all my human canvases!! And NO I did NOT have a license to paint faces!!  ;D

All the rest of the books came home to my alcove over the garage and will be put in my neighborhood sale for LSF. Thanks guys for loading up my van!
Well, enjoy the photos everyone!
See you all hopefully on the 4th of June!
