Snow already?!? :o
Heh, it's alright--I lived in Michigan for 3 years, so I'm used to snow coming earlier than in NJ.
It was a treat in NJ if we got snow by Thanksgiving. Some years, though, it didn't come until after Christmas.
This year feels like "a week before Thanksgiving" at the latest.
Sunny here.
Theres been snow on the ground here all week! :)

Currently 9 degrees F... my electric heater had it so hot in here I thought I might be in Brazil.
I cant tell exactly how much but it looks like a few inches
27 deg here and NFS!
Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb (actually a wet washcloth) across my head......
It was 11 degrees here and no snow..... ;D (I think)
Jumped back into bed.....to cold for me... :P

How's the snow in Hartford, Lloyd?
I don't think it has started in CT yet. According to the radar the snow is here, but, aloft and not hitting earth, whatever the Hell that means. As a matter of fact there is a large Brushfire near the airport in New Haven.

Their forecast for upper north east is to be fairly cold till May.
Just got back in from plowing the driveway... nursing some kind of cold too.
This is one of those storms I'll end up plowing three times so as for it to not get too deep for the ATV.
Came back in with ice all hanging from the whiskers on my face. ;D
6-8" here so far I don't think it will turn to rain like they said .... at least I hope not
Our apartment door opens outward and we have no easement or canopy or anything overhead, so I spent most of yesterday evening fretting about 2" of snow in front of the door... Of course, it's probably good that I did so as I didn't have to manage 6" of snow butt up against the door, but we got far less snow than I was expecting.
It doesn't help that my back is about 2 wrong bends/twists from being thrown out.

Ch'kah! Yeah... I'm glad I wasn't out at night at all! It started snowing up here around 5:30ish... and it stuck REAL fast.
We baked cookies last night!
Today, however, I'm going to venture up to Plymouth. I need to get out of the apartment, I think.
I did 2" of snow three times also thinking if I waited too long it would get too wet for the blower. We used the blower on an additional 3-4inches just before dark. The stuff out there looks white, but, I know it rained all night, so.....I'm very afraid to go out.
Time to go sledding... my neighbor called me and told me NOT to shovel he will be by later with the snowblower!!!!!! ;D
no rain here .... just a bunch of snow
We got more than a foot... here I am on my second time plowing, it was a lot heavier.

Don't even think about it; Phil is adorable! :smitten:
Man, a combination of drifting snow and my friendly neighborhood plowguy :angryfire: left my car half-buried in snow. I had to dig around the tires just to get out of my parking space. I think this is the most snow I have seen since I moved to New Hampshire. :eastsnow:
The dog is absolutely loving it. We got about 18", which makes it just under his torso. He is bounding around the yard with the kids.
maybe a foot here
Just after I wrote, he got out of the yard. The temporary radio fence is partially above ground, and must have broken. He got about 20 houses down before we coaxed him close enough to grab him back.
Very scary with cars on an icy street, but he's safe now.
My neighbor has taken it upon himself to plow my driveway... today he ripped apart the wire and disabled the fence. I managed to twist the ends back together but I will have to do a full repair once the snow melts.

Big fat & beautiful New England flakes falling at a nice pace in Salem tonight. (Mixed with rain.)

No, no typo. People actually eat beans at breakfast around here. I haven't figured it out yet.
I have never heard of such a thing.
I am boggled.
I saw that in Mexico. I've never seen it here.
Hash browns don't really exist, either. At least not my definition. Most breakfast potatoes here are chunks of deep fried potatoes, overly fried at that. Occasionally they are grilled and that is better. Some places offer "hash browns" that are just the deep fried patty things like McD's has. To get shredded potatoes, gently grilled, I have to go to Denny's. Not many of those around either.
Don't even think about looking for grits.

How's that Error, it looks better, right? Thanks! Maybe you can start up a computer tutoring business on the side of your other business? I checked out your Homeland Stupidity site and it is totally awesome! I didn't want to post on your new forum because I figure you get enough of me here. ::) So your site is basically for people to get up to the minute news and then some, right?
I have to start writing my books that I want to write but I want to write one with my twin sister because when we put our heads together we come up with some great stuff!

Tomorrow: Heavy snow during the morning will give way to a mixture of rain and snow during the afternoon. Some sleet may mix in. High near 35F. Winds E at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precip 90%. Snow accumulating 5 to 8 inches.
UGH! I'm not sure I can shovel all our houses by myself.

Welcome to NH everyone!
I left to go pick up my girlfriend from work at around 10:45... I didn't get to the Hannaford in Plymouth until 11:15 (that's less than a 10-mile drive)... the interstate was really nasty and I was stuck behind those big plow trucks. I saw two people off the side of the road. It was a beautiful dawn around 6:00am, though... the sky was a pale rose color. :)
Yikes, just rain here,
Hope all will be safe up there.

Whew, it was nasty on 93! Big trucks kept passing us and it scared me. Then I nagged Rick as usual and was telling him how to drive so he was nervous and it made him drive worse. I could just swear he drives in the other persons lane all the time but I guess my eyes are fubared because we don't get hit. I always tell him, "Rick there's a truck coming, ( I think it's an OCD thing since the accident). I'm always like this :confused2: when he drives and I say, "mommy, help me". Like he doesn't see these huge trucks, poor Rick he really has to love me I guess.
Oh my gosh that reminds me of such a funny story! I always dodge frogs in the road and scream if they jump. So my friend, kids, and her kids, were in the van we were driving on a back road at night and zig-zagging all over to not hit the hundreds of frogs on the road and I'm screaming, she's pissing herself laughing, the kids were saying, "WEE!" like they were on a roller coaster it was so funny!
Looks like what could be a Hell of a storm coming on the weekend :o

First snow :)
Not much up in Campton, it's mixed with light rain.
It was snowing here in Northwood until about 9am, then changed over to rain... I still firmly believe that it shouldn't snow before my b-day! (Having grown up in Jersey, it was a little less likely to snow before the 21st of this month)...
No snow, but high winds knocked some trees down, and we lost power for a couple of hours.

Promissed myself that (as I reclaim my health) I'd get back to the trails on a more regular basis, and start heading for the "deeper" trails (which I've been missing for too long), BEFORE the snow starts this season.
Well on Tuesday morning, with reports of rain on the way, I headed for Trail D - which I hadn't seen in well over a year. And wouldn't you know - - - as "fate" would have it, no rain - - - the snow began. ;D

We will miss you at the winter events. It won't seem the same without your smiling face. Maybe your mom can save some snowballs in the freezer for you. See you in the spring! :)
Maybe we can take a snowball with us, and then when she gets off the plane in Denver, we'll nail her with it!
Enjoy the jetsetting lifestyle Kira. 8) Post some pictures from your adventures. :)

That was the year we moved. A short time later I went down south to pack and move our stuff... I was cutting the grass in 100 degree weather.

Well, I can see how Elizabeth couldn't mow the grass down there! :o
It's finally snowing here in Minnesota today! It looks like only 4 or 5 inches, but enough to get excited about if you own a sled or a snowplow. I really love driving in the snow...a LOT. More than any reasonable person should.
Every time I tell someone I'm moving to NH, they always get wide-eyed and say something like "how are you going to handle those cold NH winters?" or something like that. They don't seem to understand that I like the winter. I live. In Min. Esota. How bad can NH possibly be in comparison? I did hear from one friend that the snowfall in NH is pretty high, so maybe that's what these people are always talking about? It snows a good amount here, but I can't imagine NH being as cold as Minnesota in the depths of an angry January.

NH weather is much milder than MN, I can attest to this fact! There were winters in MN in my memory where it didn't get above zero for weeks on end. Last winter here I can't remember a day where it got below 20 above. The summers are milder, too. Minnesota summers are often unbearable, but here it's pretty tolerable.
The winter shouldn't be too different. The two states are pretty much on the same longitude.

I'm seeing more problems with condensation.
Warmer air holds more moisture than colder air. When the warmer air is cooled, the water comes out of the air.
The air moving across the Great Lakes picks up water, if it is colder on shore when the moist air arrives the water will condense out of the air. If it is colder than freezing, it will become snow.
It's the same problem the Chemtrails Guys have. :_snowball__by_darkmoon3636:

That is pretty funny. Do you know why they think that? The polar weather is much more likely to reach MN and it is likely to stay there longer. Maybe they thought you were moving to Mt. Washington, as it is known to have the worst weather in the world.

It's slowed down up this way, (Campton). I got up early this morning and made sure we all got showers and filled tons of pitchers with water for us and the animals, filled the tub to be able to flush the toilets. We still have electricity, I'm surprised with the wind bursts, I have candles, lighters and hand cranked radio all set.
Rick is out shoveling away and doing his annoying driving the cars back and forth a million times. ::)

Looked like an accident report. Can't collect insurance without one.
I drove a big heavy cab in the early 70's. I was coming up Rt. 2 in East Hartford entering the exit for downtown Hartford, a long left hand curved overpass. I didn't give any thought to the rain, the cold or the overpass. A guy was jumping up and down waving his arms. I hit the brakes trying to steer out of the skid, failed and spun around and hit the side of another car that was across the road. I crinkled in the side of their car quite a bit. I got out and checked on the older couple. They were ok. There were three other cars that had hit each other beyond them.
A state cop pulls up. He steps out of the cruiser and falls flat on his ass. He got up and flipped open his book asking what happened. Then, what sounded like a bad crash took place on whatever road was immediately below us. We all got some kind of pass due to conditions. I guess he got our names, I don't remember. My victims and I limpted to the cab company and the night manager talked them into a settlement.
Man, Russell and I got sunburnt yesterday. It's supposed to be 74 here today.

As of yesterday, total snowfall in Concord -- the community where data have been kept the longest -- was 19.8 inches short of the 19th-century record of 122 inches.
New Hampshire could see 8 to 12 inches of snow before the storm tapers off by noon in southern New Hampshire and by 4 p.m. in central and eastern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

my mother always called me a brat so maybe Lloyd is onto something.
Hey Ivy I spent 30 years enduring the winters on Buffalo NY and the lake effect shit that never stopped.
and winter from late Oct to April/May...and it never fricken thawed out.
I paid my dues.
Here in Colorado I am spoiled with the dry air, 300+ days of sunshine a year and shorter winters.
The biggest difference is in the humidity here in CO. Here when it is 35 degrees and the sun shining you do not even need a coat. It s nothing compared like Buffalo where that moist cold air chills your bones.
So umm..enjoy the freezing cold sloppy weather back in NH. hee hee..spring is coming tho'
Kola
Well we got enough snow to cover the ground.
Then it changed to rain and washed it all away. ;D
Broke a part on the plow, shoveled X number of tons of snow, about the time we start to feel bummed we remember it's just the cost of living here in heaven. Everyone else is downstream.
Beautiful mild day.
William had fun jumping off the snow cliffs. :)

it's not snowing
the snow lemmings have jumped
it is absolute evil.
if i hear one word about a 'drought' this summer, i'll go postal on the motherfucker
Well, we need the rain, you know.
Every year that we don't get much snow they say its bad for farmers. I hope those fucking farmers are happy this year :P
Lloyd, trust me, farmers are never happy with the weather...they just like to bitch, continually cry broke and collect gov money and cruise around in their cadillacs with longhorns on the hood.
kola
I'll be happy about all the snow when July rolls around. Until then, I hate it.
I hope it is gone by then
PorcFest is gonna be real chilly if not.
PorcFest nights are supposed to be chilly. For **** sake; it's not even Summer at that time.

they'll most likely be bitching into july....cuz the fields are gonna be quagmires until then...
they'll most likely be planting a tad late...
AND, who knows what kind of a rain season we'll have this spring??
oof.
It is really not the snow, but the soil temp. Even after the snow is gone, we have to wait. Its why so many use black sheeting to cover their beds... it helps bring the temp up.
What the heck is this?
I want snow, but I want it in NH. We spent the weekend in shorts and t-shirts at the park. It was 75 degrees Saturday.
People here question why I want to move to NH: "It's too cold up there!" And I respond, "There is nothing colder than 35 degrees, freezing rain, and windy. Give me -10 and four feet of snow any time!"
Anyone here ever read the book 'Centennial' by James Michner?
Yes, it took me a hundred years to read, though.
In the part of the book covering the 'dustbowl' drought in the 1930's there is this woman fighting the blowing dirt coming into her house. She keeps pushing it out, but, it is relentless, dirt everywhere, coming in the house, day after day, coming up over the windows. I think she kills herself. I'm not ready for that yet, but, winter isn't over :P

this has been one of the most evil winters we've had in a while.

It didn't accumulate here, but friends about 140 miles away in Arkansas got over a foot last night, and still snowing this morning.

Sorry, 90 degrees in the shade just isn't for me, I don't care how 'dry' the air is.

The GW theory claims that regional weather anomalies such as unusually cold periods are caused by climate change. That may or may not be true. It also sounds like the reasoning religion uses, not science.
I think we ought to be promoting Global Warming as the only global answer to the scourge of snow.

Except Global Warming is blamed not just for hot weather but for increases in violent weather nowadays. Hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, &c.. See how they've always an answer and it always result in the
DOOM? ::)
All in all, I believe there's some truth to climate change. I also believe climate change is basically eschatology for secular society.
Hurricanes, Tornados, Typhoons - Let's repackage those as Ocean Breezes.
Melting of the polar icecaps = safe voyages for passenger ships
Polar Bears dying = Chances of being attacked by a Polar Bear dramatically decreased!
New York City underwater = Ending urban blight
You've got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative.

Huh?
What characterizes a lot of faiths is their unfalsifiable nature—any attempt at presenting opposing evidence can be explained away by omnipotence of the faith's deity, or the idea that logic doesn't apply, or similar. Scientific theories are supposed to be falsifiable—that is, a theory is constructed based upon available evidence, but if evidence comes to light that contradicts the theory... time for a new theory. When GW advocates are able to label virtually every aspect of the modern environmental condition as being evidence of global warming, GW theory becomes unfalsifiable—and moves from science to faith.
Since weather and climate are relative (climate being the long term average of weather), a regional weather anomaly if long enough would in essence be a climate changing event.
While the theory would suggest that an increase in solar irradiance, or an increased retention of thermal energy, would change regional weather patterns.

The actual theory as put forth by
global warming climate change advocates is that the increased temperature translates to increased energy in the atmosphere, which translates to more violent weather throughout the world in general—including monster snowstorms among other things. This does sort of make sense, but I begin to be suspicious because the theory has such a catch-all nature. It's as if they were casting about since the 1970s
trying to come up with a theory that couldn't easily be challenged, and they finally did it. The theory is simply too convenient.
Yes, this is a grossly
unscientific counterargument, but since the issue is already so politicized by the other side, I tend to trust my own paranoid political intuition more than scientific rigor.
My main question is, Is Global Warming going far enough? I mean, even the most radical projections don't show the planet warming by more than a few degrees. I'm sick of this ice age. Let's try to get back to how it was when the dinosaurs were here. Increased heat doesn't mean that life can't thrive. On the contrary, we are still living off the oil from the massive amount of carbon-based life that thrived during that period. So let's try to go back to that time. That was nice. It might even solve our peak oil problem. ;)

My poor truck looked like a giant salt pile... I did take the plow off it and managed to find a car wash down in MA that didn't have a 50 car line so 13 dollars later it was clean for 5 minutes till I started the 30 mile ride home.
My wife bought me the truck for a wedding present, and for the first few months when it sat in the yard with the plow on it waiting for snow, we joked that she just dropped 26 grand on a plow and it would probably never snow again.
Boy were we wrong! 16 months and a winter and a half later, the truck with 9000 miles on it has seen more than it's fair share of snow, and if I don't have to use it again this winter it is fine with me! I bet right now the truck is conspiring to evict the Porsche from the garage so it can go hibernate for the summer.

Yup, my reaction was pretty much about the same as yours. I'm sick of snow and ice! We went to the parade in Plymouth and it was really coming down, it was pretty but a 1/2 hour of it would've been plenty for me. :P
I worked a double, so at 4 am this morning I
look out side and it is snowing hard, like some one

it turns to all rain. A deluge of rain but rain.
And what do we know about rain class?
That's right rain don't stick to the blade of your snow shovel. ;D
blizzard
i think there is like 6 inches out there, but it is on the move
We have close to a foot on the ground...
It was really nice this morning, cold enough to be fluffy and still get traction.
Now it is warmer and starting to turn to rain... I hate wet snow... I wish that southern warmth would stop at Pat's house. ;D
My car is buried up to the driver's side window, thanks to way the snow drifts around my motorhome. Lesson learned.
The snow was wet and about 6 inches in Winchester... snow blower had a hard time moving it all. :)
We didn't get much wind here either.
It looks to be about 8 inches in Grafton, and the snowblower was resting warmly in the basement, apparently on strike, as we tried to shovel enough snow out of the long driveway for Kat to be able to return from work.
I got about 9 inches of powder at the Freehold, and assume the snow plows have walled me in at the end of the driveway; I got too tired walking there to actually look. :P Now the snow is coated with a layer of ice. I already told my boss I won't make it in to work tomorrow, since the only way I can clear the driveway is to spend some time not WORKING during daylight hours. :homework:
We'll see how much of what the nice man at Lowe's told me about "augurs" and "priming" and "checking the oil" and "don't stick your fingers in there" I retained. Will there be blood on the snow? Will I ever be seen again?! Will my emaciated, fingerless corpse be found in a snowdrift next spring? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of California Grrl in the Woods of New Hampshire! :happy1:
It's exciting (dangerous to the machine and people) when the snowblower shoots out rocks. Be careful where you point the discharge chute.
Your story would make a great screenplay. ;D 8)

Ummm...
Lindsay is stuck at the bottom of the hill. The Element won't climb it, it just keeps sliding.
I can't get out of the driveway because it's not plowed. This isn't bad planning, I swear! Someone came out to plow and the plow truck got stuck.
This could be interesting.
Do you need help?
Well... Yes, we did.
Lindsay got stuck at the bottom of the hill, and one of our neighbors (someone we haven't met yet) let us park the car at their place. Lindsay and her hung out for a bit.
Then, Artie got an armada of tractors here to rescue the plow truck and plow the driveway.
So, we're all set now. It was exhausting and... interesting. Lots of folks do stuff the Grafton way up here in Grafton. :P

I'm familiar with winter. I grew up in Michigan, and while I'm young, I had plenty of winter driving experience.
It's bad when it's "just cold enough" to snow. Pressure causes snow to melt, and the cold of the snow causes the water to freeze as ice. Ice = slippery. :) When it's really cold, it just poofs around the road. :)
What I was NOT expecting was the snow to hit like this. I think this is the third snow of the year (and ironically, 2 of 3 happened when I stayed the night in Keene...) and BAM, my car is buried. I expected some time to get used to it, to get a feel for how things would fare. Guess I was wrong. :P

I'm not sure if that was intended to be towards me, but Lindsay did provide a bit of non-monetary compensation for the lady who invited her in. She also speaks pleasantly of her, so it's possible she may have made a new friend as well. :)
The guy who plowed the driveway has a history with both Jerry and myself and I will most certainly trade favors with him as he's done for me.
Neighbors watch each other's backs, and while there are certainly exceptions, it seems to be a pretty strong meme here. Today, I needed more help than I offered. It won't always be that way. :)

Some times it's enough just to make it home in one piece.
Took a run at the big hill coming up the mountain and some city slicker was stuck 3/4 way up... we would have made it, but ended up having to try and back down... ended up in the ditch... miraculously between two people pushing and me doing some wild ass maneuvers spun the car around... a controlled slide back down... waited 2 hours for the sand truck to come by... one more balls to the wall run at it and somehow made it up. Rain on snow on top of ice... that was fun. lol

I had something like that today!
Lindsay has just got off of work, and she had an.. um... appointment?... with a new friend. We spent a few minutes on the phone debating how we would get home with the snow.
So I went out to get her and as we plugged along Hardy Hill, the car started spinning, and then gently sliding down the hill.
It took me two attempts to get up the hill in various gears (Thanks Yahoo! Answers!) but the second attempt I menaged to get JUST far enough that I stopped where a pickup was also stranded with their flashers on.
I hopped out, with someone else pulling up behind me and causing an embarassing roadblock. The other stranded guy and myself decided we'd trade pushes to get up the hill. So since I was blocking the "proper" side, we pushed the Malibu up the hill. It was tough, and still snowing like crazy, but we got enough to get the car over the crest and into the driveway. The third guy hopped in and pushed too; I suspect we'd have gotten stuck again without him.
So then we tried pushing the truck out, and even with three of us, it failed. Rear wheel drive. :(
Anyway... New Hampshire snows suck ass, but the have a really strange way of introducing neighbors to each other! There's always a silver lining, I suspect!
Is there not so much snow elsewhere that chains would be too much trouble? Or is there enough to keep them on for a while?
The little storm that Kevin is talking about came in fast and was very slippery. Two guys left the compound left here after it began. They were sliding going down our road. When they got down to Rt. 4 they saw a guy slide off the road into a snowbank, helped him out and returned home.
Gak, glad you all are OK, TomSawyer! And glad I didn't have to go anywhere yesterday! I did a 180 at the bottom of Bullock's Crossing on Hwy 4 during the last storm. No ditches for me though.
A 5 gallon pail of sand to spread for traction and a shovel are handy to keep in the vehicle for getting unstuck. The Grafton landfill has a pile of "free" sand. Just think only about a week to go before winter is "officially" here. No snow adventures count until it's winter...State law. ;D
my neighbors laugh at me for going out and keeping up with it. They're all old and frail and I was figuring they'd come out and ask me to shovel their snow too. They just watched and waved (and chuckled). . . just as I get done, they open the shed door and the mother of all snowblowers comes out and morphs like a transformer. They were done their whole driveway, stairs, etc in about 10 minutes.
these people are professionals.
I don't really mind it all that much, I love the view from inside but not on the road. I saw a guy spin out and wanted to help him but if I stopped I would have been in an even worse position. Sometimes you can stop and help push, sometimes it's every man for themselves.
Our town (Barnstead) also has a pile of free sand by the "town shed". I filled 2 5 gallon buckets there this morning.
We keep two tube sands in the bed of the truck at all times. Once last year at Ron's place in Deerfield, I got stuck and even my 4 wd didn't get me going again. We broke open one of the tubes under the tires and it worked like a charm.

Here's how to give me a heart attack in five easy steps:
1) Advertise snow plowing services.
2) Don't return my call.
3) Wait until a storm comes along that drops several inches.
4) Wait until I am using the snowblower to clear my own driveway.
5) Walk up my private drive, *behind* me, while the snowblower is running and I'm wearing ear protection, and suddenly appear at my elbow.
:Dragon_Ball_emoticon_by_Wereg
haha weatherscan showed the 5 day forecast.
Sunday: Snow
Monday: Snow Showers
Tuesday: Snow
Wednesday: Snow
Thursday: Partially Cloudy/Snow Showers
Friday: Expected Snow
...
This little snow is a bit more annoying than a massive snow storm.
I agree with Kevin.
Friday vs the Storm
Friday scores points for clearing the driveway
Storm scores points for sliding the TANSTAAFLmobile into the woods and keeping a rearview mirror as a souvenir
Winner TBD (it hasn't stopped snowing yet....) :-\

He was handsome, but he's also married and should consider himself lucky he didn't get shot. You may have heard my shriek of "Jesus CHRIST!" out in the Monadnock region when I suddenly saw a strange man standing at my elbow.
did he say"no ... but thanks for the compliment"?
about 5 inches since the start of this storm
snowblowers and 2 inches of snow at a time don't mix well
i need a little snowblower

it sure looked nice this morning though
That's not a complaint Russell, it's like Shazzam. You yell "Jesus CHRIST!" and he appears and he kicks ass or stops a crane from falling on you.
It's never worked for me, I don't think he likes me.
Suddenly a hansom stranger appeared at her elbow. "Are you married?", she asked shyly. "Yes", he said.

I called a business five days ago and left voicemail. Three days later, Snow Plow Man calls me back. The first thing he says is "My WIFE gave me your message." He then says he won't tell me how much he will charge to plow my driveway until he has taken a look at it first. He was supposed to call back later that day, but never did, that day or the next. I figured he didn't like the looks of my driveway. :dontknow: Turns out, he forgot. Now that he has seen it, his rates are quite delightfully acceptable.
Ordinarily I would try harder to word the above to ward off the inevitable double un-thunders, but I'm just too tired to bother. It's been a rough day. :coffee: I'm sleeping in tomorrow and the snowblower can... how does Becky Thatcher put it... "eat shit and die". ;D

My picture is too big to upload here and I'm feeling to lazy to resize it. The snow is now so deep that the only part of my porch that's visible is the hand rails, and snow is starting to cover the windows.
Pic of that probably tomorrow.
In case you don't hear from me again, it's okay. I've got enough bread to nourish me through the winter. :)

I had not checked the forcast, but I knew that the ground had thawed again so, I moved dirt on the North North East/East North East corner of the church today. Now I see possible snow in the forcast for the next 6 days. I think I could be (almost) done (just in time?) working on the outside of that, "the coldest and wettest," corner of the building until ... well we'll see.
Also, my ankle may never be quite the same again but that did not stop me from buying two (forward and goalie) used hockey sticks ... And, I don't know how far I'll make it, but look forward to snow shoeing again. I haven't been on them since last February ...

And the wind.
This building makes the strangest noises when it is windy.
Its kind of interesting and makes me think about how very differently people respond to such noises.
I've never experienced anything like this before. But, I've never actually been sitting quietly, in such a big old (1798) church building, sitting so quietly, alone, thoughout a storm, quietly listening to how the building is responding to the first of winter storms. Very strange and interesting indeed.
Then I here a racing (kind of whining) engine and wonder what the heck is that all about. I can't tell from which direction it came. And then again, and its gone.
When I look out back at the rail trail I realize it was the sound of snowmobilers at play.
Winter definitely arrived today.

Rather than getting all worked up and depressed about "Too Long Winta," how about a bunch (or a few) of us get together and make a great big big snow man, or lots of little snow people, or both?
Don't say that its not worth it because they won't last long. That's part of the point: It won't last long.
Let's just turn it into fun while it does last.
We could do it here at Peaceful Assembly Church later today or early tomorrow – or maybe both.
We can even put them near the north side of the building, in the shadow of the church where the sun won't get them.
WHY NOT? When we are given lemons we make lemonade.

Or course, it sucks that our local Easter forecast is for heat and humidity and no precipitation.

Started snowing here at 1130 pm.
Coming down hard but just now starting to
stick on the grass, it will be an annoyance.
Did I ever mention I hate snow.
About 8 inches here. When I got up 1/2 hour ago the cats were holding their knees together so I shoveled out the 'Cat Door'.
It's a funny feeling, being back in Jersey (though still pretty darn cold, because I'm in a building without much centralized heat)... In my Free State lair I had hopes of acceptance pulsing through my veins, warming me. In NJ, I'm shivering from defeat...
It can't possibly be snowing, anywhere, as there have been no power outages in suburban, Maryland, the power outage capital of the world.
Today the grass is green the roads are black
the only thing white on my part of this island
are cocaine and crack.
Such a poet!
This is a classic Pat K screen cap...
;D
We received about a foot of snow last night... Power out from 9pm till noon today.
Really pretty and probably the earliest we've gotten snow cover since living here... usually Thanksgiving time frame for first significant snow.
Not sure if Winchestershire lost power haven't been able to make contact yet.
31.4 inches in Jaffrey, according to today's Foster's Daily Democrat
Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KBCraig: LOL :D

Has anyone heard from the Winchester folk?
We got our power back about 7:15pm.
The snow was about ten inches deep, and very heavy.

Yeah, it's been lightly snowing off and on for a few hours now, but it's melting as soon as it touches down.
With this and the four frosts we had last month I'm beginning to suspect that summer is almost over. ;D
Thanks, now I am regretting getting the lectric back.
It snowed last night... it's still snowing.
It snowed a bit here too.

Get Rhythm
Little shoeshine boy never gets low down
But he's got the dirtiest job in town
Bending low at the peoples' feet
On the windy corner of the dirty street
Well I asked him while he shined my shoes
How'd he keep from getting the blues
He grinned as he raised his little head
Popped a shoeshine rag and then he said
Get rhythm when you get the blues
Hey get rhythm when you get the blues
It only costs a dime just a nickel a shoe
Does a million dollars worth of good for you
Get rhythm when you get the blues

It's not so tropical in southern tropical Grafton today.
The yardstick shows it's 19 inches on the front porch.

Back and forth between the northern air and the southern air. I actually prefer the northern air because it means clearer and drier conditions. It's when we get stuck with the front over us that the wind and precip. happens.

Alcohol makes you feel warmer, but it's a vasoconstrictor, meaning it shuts down limb-saving blood flow to the extremities.

I bought a trap house about a year ago, and it has been sitting empty since then. The copper pipes were stolen, but I had them replaced with PEX last week. I haven't hooked up to town water yet, because I didn't plan to heat the house this winter. It should only take a day to get water turned on if needed. It is in a no zoning town, so no certificate of occupancy is needed. Anyways, if you decide you don't want to live on public land in a tent, I have a house that is sitting empty. It's full of lead paint and asbestos...but it's not a tent.

Mary had a guy with a four wheeler plow our drive before I got here. It had built up to about 12", which was no problem for our truck, but was a barrier for visitors. I snow shoed yesterday for the first time in a long time. Just a short walk to replenish the bird feeders with suet. Fell once and floundered around in the snow, trying to look like I meant to do that, got covered in snow... wished it was spring.
The Chickadees found my antics funny, I think they were laughing at me...but the little ungrateful buggers leapt on the suet within seconds of me putting it out there. Who said there's no such thing as free lunch?

I had hoped to visit Grafton before the first snowfall. Looks like I'm too late.
Our first frost is coming tonight... dang it's a changing'.
During today's crazy weather we had a "blizzard" of wtf snow for about 30 seconds. Then it changed to sleet, rain and sunshine all within a few minutes.
We have about an inch tonight, but it's only 32 degrees.
Reports from the road:
- Winchester: Snow? What snow?
- Royalston Rd. Fitzwilliam: OMG SNOW EVERYWHERE!!
- Rest of Fitzwilliam: Huh? Melting on impact, may as well be rain.
- Jaffrey: Sleet! It cuts!!

Here in Erie, PA we are sitting on top of the Golden Snow Globe National Snow Contest Snowiest US City over 100,000 again but we are 22 inches below our normal snowfall and it is a beautiful sunny day, no breeze and it is quite pleasant out.
Last night it was -26, and today it got all the way up to zero. Low of -23 tonight, then spiking up to 44 and heavy rain on Tuesday.
70 degree swings suck, no matter if it's from 40 to 110, or -25 to 45.

Most of the time it's quite nice...except for waking up in a house where the temperature inside is 43.1F degrees! But if your wood is dry, the house is warm in no time. And I have charred the butt in many a robe by standing too close to the wood stove. William will say "Mom, your clothes are smoking, move away from the stove!"
I love having a wood stove.
I've never lived for more than a week or two at a time in a location where a fireplace or woodstove would be a nice thing to have. All I know is I hate hot weather.
I had a wood stove when I lived in Grafton. I was always afraid the toddlers would get burned, but it never happend. It was nice to have heat when the electricity went out for two weeks in the middle of winter.
I have been on oil heat for the last 6 years. Well, oil and electric because each 1000w grow light kicks out 4000 BTUs of heat. There were a couple of years when oil was so expensive that I didn't even turn on the heat. My bedroom was around 45F all winter.
Now that oil is cheaper, I keep the thermostat set at 58F. It's 56F in my bedroom right now.
It's -6 outside. I am about to use it to my advantage, and do some ethanol cannabinoid extraction.
I've been slowly turning up my AC/not turning on my heat to keep my apartment cooler and cooler, and so far I am comfortable in 68 degree temperatures. And everyone here thinks my apartment is ridiculously cold :)
Clearly I need to work that down a little further :P
So, I guess I shoulda bought that used snow blower for sale on that guys front lawn last week.

I consulted my potential answer chart and thought, should I answer this question as if my son is the subject or the snow blower guy is the subject.
Here's the snow blower guy as the subject. "Why would my son break someone's arms over a used snow blower" ?
Here's my reply if my son is the subject. "No, but if he doesn't come shovel me out, I will".

Winter tires are more important than 4WD. And studded winter tires are amazing.
What are winter tires? Do you actually keep different sets of tires for different seasons?

Winter tires are the same as snow tires. They have different tread patterns and a "softer" blend of rubber to grip better in cold temperatures, but that means they wear out quicker.
If your budget allows and you travel to work daily, you're smart if you have two sets.
I'm mildly amused that you would imagine that I know what snow tires are when I don't know what winter tires are. Here. This might help you better grasp my level of understanding when it comes to precipitation of any kind.

All weather tires on A front wheel drive vehicles seem to do ok in the winter if you don't let the tires get bald.

Regarding Trump's America First bombasts, he said, wait until the next time the little guy in Korea becomes belligerent and Trump calls China for assistance and they say, "Call Taiwan."
The other was, he said Trump is indeed the great uniter. Tomorrow (Saturday) there will be a bus going from Philadelphia to Washington for a protest that is jointly rented by a Jewish group and a Muslin group that have previously never had anything to do with one another.

I have no idea how much we got, because it was drifting so much.
The uncovered porch rails had about 4"... but there was also that much on the covered part of the porch. The travel trailer had maybe 6" on top, but the vehicles had more like 10, and the driveway ranged from 8-15".
Probably on average, we got about 8 or 10 total.
It was light and dry and easy to move.

Our oldest and his wife planned to come for Christmas from Fort Drum (Watertown NY), which is on the east end of Lake Ontario.
When the weather hit just as they were heading out Friday morning, they drove for three hours and made it 60 miles before turning back. If they'd made it to VT, it would have been even worse, because VT has an after-the-fact theory of plowing roads.
So, we had a merry Christmas (and happy birthday for the special princess), and got to see and/or speak to all our family via video or phone.
We're sitting at -13F right now, and Thursday's high will be -3~ish, with a low that night of -20 or lower.
No snow at those temps. ;D
