Any musical types want to make up some campfire songs for porcfest?
PICK ME!
I write folk style music & even a few covers. I would love to bring my guitar & sing ;D
I dig the hell out of camping....not so much with writing or singing but I love to listen ;D
Every body circle to the left every body circle to the right.
Wait who is in the circle and who is on the board........
We have a new mission statement every one applaud........
Well maybe not. Unless I drink alot at the camp fire. Nah that would never happen.
Go for it, musition :)

Would you like me to repost the two songs I posted on the FSP forum? Or do I need to come up with fresh material?? I probably will anyway, sooner or later.? So much useless talent...? ;)

You have two? :o
I only have one, and it's almost two years old. ;D
My song is very easy to play and sing . . . A, G, & D. (That's it.)
Can't get much easier than that.
If you like it, play it (or just sing along.)
Send it to me? I wouldn't know what to do with it :) I was just throwing out the idea (here cause someone told me Chris wrote folk songs). Bring them to porcfest?
Here is a song I wrote. I stayed up half the night. Couldn't get it out of my head.
Kat, can you post MIDI files on your site? I have a copy of a Lord Franklin MIDI that could be included. The tune is very beautiful.
A Place I Call Liberty
(To the tune of Lord Franklin)
In every dream, there's one thing I see,
A special place in which I want to be.
It is a place I pray I will live to see.
A place I call Liberty.
I've often thought what this place would be,
Where you can be just what you want to be.
It wouldn't matter if you were not like me.
A place I call Liberty.
Where their's respect and civility,
And you have full rights to your property.
A place where trading markets are really free.
A place I call Liberty.
A place to build a community,
Of simple folk who just want to be free.
A place where you can teach your family.
A place I call Liberty.
Now if you dream of a world that's free,
We'll turn these dreams into reality.
We'll make a world that's built upon liberty,
A place we'll call Liberty.

Wow, Alan! Yeah, if you send me a midi, I can get it up for you, so to speak.

;DYikes! Never a dull moment without comedy with this group!!!
John's song was awesome last year at the porc fest- remember it well, despite the beer intake.
Alan's reads well - but I don't know the melody, so this lullaby singin' Mama of four makes it up as I go along.
What about "talent night" at the porc fest? Maybe next year as the "docket is full" with events. I'll play tambourine to anyone's song...and sing along....
Cheers!
Margot
Listened to the midi - great sound!!
Let's do a sing along Friday night at campfire of choice!

Dare I say 'kumbaya'?

Dare I say 'kumbaya'?
Well you sure can, but excuse me if I hurl.
Here's another wonderful song from Alan:
Heed The Call Of Freedom
by Alan Milner
To the tune of "Early One Morning"
Heed the call of freedom
It is sounding can you hear it?
It is now, or it is never,
Lift your voice, join in the call.
Freedom is calling you,
Answer what you will do.
It is up to you,
The call has sounded now stand tall.
If Liberty is precious
Help defend it or you'll lose it,
Don't let tyrants take it from you,
Raise your voice when freedom calls.
Freedom is calling you,
Answer what you will do.
It is up to you,
The call has sounded now stand tall.
Join we now together,
In our quest for freedoms riches,
It is now or it is never,
Lift your voice, join in the call.
Freedom is calling you,
Answer what you will do.
It is up to you,
The call has sounded now stand tall.
It is up to you,
The call has sounded now stand tall.

The Legend of Shorty Dawkins
by Alan Milner
Come, gather round, and here this tale,
Of Shorty Dawkins my old friend.
He enjoyed a mug of good brown ale,
The ale, it caused his end.
A legend in the North Country,
The tales of his exploits are legendary
Like the time he stared down a bear cub,
Then sat down for some grub.
Oh his fame it spread far and wide,
His friends all felt such pride,
Just to know Shorty was a joy,
He was a good old boy.
The children all yelled with glee,
When Shorty came to town,
For they knew it was rare to see,
Old Shorty with a frown.
Hoo-ray for Shorty Dawkins,
Hoo-ray for Shorty Dawkins,
Friend to all in the North Country,
Came to town to get some ale,
His thirst it never fails,
So into Caleb Johnson's Bar Shorty went.
Three cheers for Shorty Dawkins,
Three cheers for Shorty Dawkins,
Round after round they consumed that day.
And the one who drank the most,
Was Shorty, that's no boast.
His thirst was legendary
Most ev'ry day.
Now the tale of Shorty Dawkins turns real sad,
It's because of all the ale he had,
As he left the bar he felt nature's call,
And stepped into the alley.
At that time, the Millinocket train came through,
And it hit poor Shorty in the back-side.
We regret to say there is nothing left,
Of poor old Shorty Dawkins,
Of poor old Shorty Dawkins.
Thats just what Shorty wanted every one to think.
Shorty Lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it! Why all this hostility toward that timeless musical masterpiece, Kumbaya? Perhaps someone could revise the complex words in the song to apply directly to the Free State and its Porcupines?
Those of you who were lucky enough to be at the Circle of Liberty last year may remember that it was preceded with song-singing and guitar-strumming earlier in the evening. Then as the mood mellowed and minds inflamed with the ingestion of more free state spirits...the Circle was born! The only problem is going to be getting the people back from the NHLA dinner that evening. But the actual Circle of Liberty, with assorted perorations, catcalls, and heartfelt statements of brotherhood and sisterhood in liberty, started *late*.
Condon,
It's sort of like hearing "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie. It is a good song but enough all ready!
[it would be awesome if somebody brought a banjo to PorcFest!]
East Bound and Down*
(all apologies to Jerry Reed)
East Bound and Down
U-Haul wheels a-rollin'
And we're gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go
And a short time to git there
I'm eastbound, now
Watch this Porcupine run!
It's New Hampshire or bust
California can eat my dust
Let it all hang out
Cuz we got a run to make.
This ol' government is abusive
And sweet liberty seems elusive
But we'll get it back
No matter what it takes....
East Bound and Down
U-Haul wheels a-rollin'
And we're gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go
And a short time to git there
I'm eastbound, now
Watch this Porcupine run!
*For the benefit of those who did not spend formative years in the South and therefore may actually not know the theme song of "Smokey and the Bandit" (not to mention recalling exactly where they were when they heard that Elvis died), here's a sound clip for the melody of this song:

Good, Friday. ;D
I have this really good song I found. I can't decide in my mind whether my new lyrics should be about a Winter Snowfall, or perhaps a Lament On The Death Of Shorty Dawkins. Anyone have a preference?
Snowfall! :)
Welcome to the Underground forums Tim! (if that's you...or even if it isn't!)
Glad to have you here.
I have a guitar with which I have pretended to play and sing for the last (gulp) 37 years. It's had some damage to it but is a rare kind 'not made that way' anymore (Gibson J-45) so I had it restrung and I'm now practicing once again.
I haven't 'performed' in a while so I tend to be shy and may end up just strumming to myself in my hotel room, but, you never know what you people might get me to do.. Hahahaaa....
Oh and nix to kumbaya, ugh! I'm more into Maia Sharp, Mindy Smith, Jimmy Eat World, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, Dido, and Kathleen Edwards (free song of the week on iTunes!) which I was practicing last night... And my mandolin player/backup musician and I are getting electrified soon....guitar-wise that is!
Hello CNHT! I look forward to hearing you play some day ;D Maybe we'll sing a song or 2 together this summer, eh?
Can't wait to hear you guys :) This porc fest is gonna be fun!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!! Only if I have a suitable partner! My late husband and I used to love to dance and in fact met in ski country at a party...Hey seriously, we should practice before we make fools of ourselves eh?
I would invite those who like this idea to email me off board and I'll tell them what campsite I'll be at and for what days.. not good to post that stuff here....for safety purposes.
Here is a song that Shorty wrote. I found it in some of his papers. If I remeber right, there are more verses. I'll post them when I find them. I'll send Kat the MIDI I made of the music.
Plant Some Freedom
by Shorty Dawkins
Gonna plant some Freedom now,
Don't know where, and don't know how,
But I'm gonna find a way,
And I'll start, this very day.
When I meet some honest folk,
I will free them from their yolk,
Cut those chains that hold them back,
From that freedom that they lack.
Let them see what they can be,
If they choose a life that's free,
You be you, and I'll be me,
That is how, it's meant to be.
Gonna plant some Freedom now,
Don't know where, and don't know how,
But I'm gonna find a way,
And I'll start, this very day.
If you want to join me now,
Pick a field and start to plow,
You must sow before you reap,
Plant your hearts and plant it deep.
If you would be free,
Then just come along with me.

I'm also attempting to write a song too...
It's going to be called "Don't Tread On Me"
In searching for, and finding music to use (I only write lyrics), I am amazed by the amount of songs that are actually redos of old folk songs. Small changes, and presto!
You guys are great!
You've got me taking one off of the back burner . . .
I'm not too good at this but . . .
I started to wright one when NH was picked . . .
I can''t seem to bring the song (dream) to a close . . .
The dream got interupted/turned into reality - NH is home.
Oh well. All is well.
Shorty's midi posted above with lyrics.

You know, speaking of 'old favorites', after hearing the song "America the Beautiful" sung at a breakfast the other day I was inspired to start playing it. Then I got curious about whether there were other verses we don't usually hear and when I looked it up found that there were indeed many verses, a few of which even refer to liberty as the law, and freedom. It's actually quite applicable to today, just like the Constitution.
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion'd stress
A thoroughfare for
freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law. O beautiful for heroes prov'd
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life.
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev'ry gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
Back to this old thread!
Since you guys got me interested in playing again, I have been having the most wonderful time jamming with my bassist/mandolin player (from 39 years ago)!!! It's a shame he can't come to the Porc Fest with us...we feel like we're in college again just having a good time!
In any case we've been diligently practicing.
Here is a sample featuring his mandolin work:

Pretty music!
The New Boston NH 4th of July celebration has an AWESOME fiddler's demo/contest. Last year it interfered with Ed's lumberjack demo but this year it will be scheduled differently.
You just can't imagine the music that can come out of kids as young as 8 or 9 years old not to mention the pros from age 22 and up.
