Title: A Voluntary (music CD) Production?
Post by: John on February 11, 2007, 04:49 AM NHFT
I have been asked enough times and by enough friends; so it is overdo that I put out a call.
I've been asked to put my folk songs onto a CD, which, to me, sounds like fun.  But, I need help.

First of all: I haven't had enough material to make a CD.  (I really only had one original song as of PorcFest 06.)  Then, inspired by conversations in Lancaster, I decided to look for (and commit (in my heart) to) inspirations for more songs.

Inspiration, as you know, is all around!  (Previously, I had neglected some great opportunities.)  Well, I've begun to harness (just enough (in my heart) to put it into a few songs) some of the inspiration folks in NH give me - and I now have a few more songs.

With new songs came more questions regarding a CD.

Towards the end of last year (06) I said that in 2007 I'd take a look at the possibility of creating a CD.  Now, being it is well into 2007, you can figure that I'm looking at how to get that started.

Among the first things that came to mind is that others have songs to.  Well, why should a CD have only songs by one artist?  Other folks have songs to - - - and some of them are even already recorded!
Maybe some folks would like to contribute a song (or more) and then we might have plenty - - -maybe even too many.

Another thought followed:  How would one coordinate - without getting into all the legal crap that would only get in the the way of getting this art published?

Ever hear about "V" for Voluntary"?

I'm thinking about a music CD that will never be sold.  Those who like the CD will be encouraged to give a voluntary gift (of whatever they think the CD is worth to them) to whatever organization or individual they think deserves some support.

Individuals contributing to the production of the music CD might have their favorite (nonviolent) cause printed (right next to their name, if they choose) in the credits.

I hope to begin this project soon.  Any/all help/ideas are welcome!

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD  - or SAID - THAT "TODAY'S FREEDOM MOVEMENT REALLY NEEDS MORE MUSIC"?  Let's start.

Let's start -now.

Great ideas John... 8)
I think that art appeals to the heart and reaches people on a different, more powerful level... it is also timeless, having a long shelf life.

Kevin aworldnervelink might be interested in being the recording engineer. I would volunteer to videotape and photograph some of the sessions. :)

Any ideas on a title for the album?

Way too many (which is good) at this point ---big surprise I'm sure.  The original title idea (where it may eventually come back to) was "Calling You Home."

Now I'm just having fun with lots of ideas and I'm totally open.  Even the ideas for cover art are way open.

I was originally thinking of using one of my nature pictures . . . also thought of the title "Sign of the Times" (done in stencil style lettering). . . then thought of throwing it open to suggestion. . .

Yes, I can record it... I am already working with Rocketman on some of his folk rock.

I will also contribute a song, but it sure won't be folk.  >:D

John -- maybe sometime you will come over and jam with us....we can back you up. We are electric but we can soften it I'm sure! I have a couple extra acoustic guitars, and one extra really nice electric one. I can back up folk with picking style, as I did folk music since 40 years ago. Rock is new for me, but I'm liking the power and loudness of it...

;D

We are getting the basement ready, have the drum set almost done being put together, have a rug coming, and of course there is a fridge for the beer!
I have two amps as well.

Thank you!  And I don't expect style will be a problem at all.  Most folks like (or at least find interesting) a variety of styles.

Maybe the glue that holds it all together will be some sort of (very, very loose) theme of oh-I-don't-know Liberty, Justice, Freedom, rebellion, friends, family, fun, New Hampshire (or at least New England  :D ), guns, beauty, Peace, Love & Understanding, etc. etc.

Thanks Jane!  But maybe rather than you all softening everything, I step it up into my old Rock-and-Roll mode for a song?   :o   I "think" I still have some of that left in me.
Maybe one or the other - or both?  This will be fun!

Wow.  I didn't know there were so many musicians here.  I've been working on some stuff but no folk music.  I've been planning on doing my own thing, but maybe I could contribute a track.  As my musical tastes are very eclectic, I've been working on different styles (blues, punk rock, hip hop etc...).  I think the message of Liberty should be in the mainstream more than it is and most political music borders on Socialist tendencies.

Question - why don't you want the music copyrighted?  It's easy enough to do and not expensive.  You wouldn't have to sell the music; but if it's not copyrighted, some unscrupulous types could basically steal it and copyright it then you'd really have some legal problems...

I don't know why anyone who writes music would not want to copyright it. I don't write, I just copy other people's songs...

I have no problem with people copyrighting their material.  In fact, I'm thinking of seeking permission from one libertarian organization whom I've recently been told has rights to a song I might want to include.
I have no idea (yet) if they have any "official" copyright, but that doesn't matter to me.  A guy who recorded it years ago told me (when I contacted him about using it) that they have the rights to it, and so that's cool.

We will only use material on this CD that we clearly have the right to use.  This is a Voluntary Production.

All material approved, so far, for potential use are original works by people known to me personally.

I had a very short practice session with one guitarist/singer tonight.

I'm quite hoping that she will be the one to join me - as the female voice - on a little blues tune called "Free State Project Blues."

Wow.  I'm happy to hear that.  I didn't know William was up for recording yet.

Tell William that I am looking for help on this project, and would love to have him volunteer to help with the chorus on one (or more) of the tunes.

Specifically, I'll (definitely) be looking for a variety of voices to sing (and I think you know where these fit in)  "And if you don't like him, you won't like me either . . ." and/or, "And if you don't like her, you won't like us either . . ."

Whether one already has recorded their songs or not is not so important.
However, if one already has their song(s) recorded, it may cut down on other production efforts.

BTW the reason I ask about museition's photos is that - as coincidence would have it - she and I took some pictures of essentially the same subject matter within days of one another and she managed to capture precisely what I was trying to, in several.

Speaking of photos, does anyone know of a HIGH QUALITY photo of that brilliant rainbow that splashed into the valley at the end of Porcfest #1?  While it was a uniquely dramatic sceen, my pictures of it aren't worth considering as cover art.

Well I just spoke to John on the phone and told him he's on my list of people to call who would be interested in having some fun.....we're busy getting the cellar set up to accommodate more people. The drum set is huge and takes up a lot of space...I'm behind schedule on this due to not having felt well... but I haven't forgotten those who have said they would like to do this...I did not know you liked to sing, but, the more harmony the better!

John,

Heard you on the FTL podcast today. I have been working on a song based on Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.  The idea is to give a description of all the main protagonist in verses and then have a common chorus echoing objective reasoning.  I'm still working on it, just started tonight because I was inspired by your phone call to Ian and Mark (and about 6 beers).

Of course describing John Galt's exploits would be the last verse before the final chorus. I was thinking Dagnie Taggert, Hank Reardon, and Francisco d'Anconia for the verses.

Well, I read this and  find this interesting.
I am a vocalist - with a CD for sale on Amazon and other places, but I dont think that my vocal style would fit this project at all :(. My musical partner and I produced all the songs ( all originals ), music, lyrics, mastering and even the CD cover art. Everything was made in NH - with amazing pictures taken at the North Beach NH. If you want to see the album or hear samples, please go to:

I sing and currently teach voice at a performing arts school. I can write and sing a killer smooth harmory to anything-- rock n roll, r&b, folk, jazz any style -- really.

I am very busy with life, but let me know if you need back-up vocals and I'll make the time.

Hi I'm new to this forum but I heard your idea on ftl and I wanted to see if I could get involved. Your idea is similar to what I wanted to do which was get a bunch of pro liberty bands and musicians together to make a compilation cd. My buddies and I have probably about two songs that are polished enough to record. We're in Indy so we would have to get them recorded out here and send them. So I was wondering how many band/musicians you have for this project and if you would have room for us or if you would even want us on there. I'll check back later and see what you say. thanks, Liam

Welcome to the forum Liam, and thanks for coming over!

I'm thinking we still have room for more . . . need to figure out the details.

I suggest going ahead with recording.  The "worst" thing that could happen IF we were to run out of room is that WE WOULD BE ON OUR WAY TOWARDS A SECOND CD!   :o  Now, how "bad" would that be?  ;D

This could turn into something big - like an ongoing project to bring out the music that today's Freedom movement already has (apparently hidden just beneath the surface)  - - - and to foster its' growth.

Not sure how comfortable I am with being called "polished."  I'm just some dude who's trying to support Liberty & Justice . . . All I did in my "presentation" was take the time (and I sure need time, as I currently only have about 15 minutes of actual music I'm comfortable playing publicly) to describe (for those who might not know) what each song is about, prior to playing them.

I admit that I gave some prior thought about how to do that (I decided on chronological order) ; and I'm glad I did, particularly because there were lots of NEW folks.  I value your opinion, and I'm glad it worked.

One of the really fun parts of the night was when I went outside of my normal routine to specifically try and help support the AltExpo.  (Word is that that worked to.)

Anyway, thanks for your kind comments.  It was a pleasure to finally meet you - in person.  Thanks for bringing your guitar to.  I'm thinking we'll talk soon.

John sounded good as he closed SAT night's FTL show.

Thanks! I'm so glad it worked.

FTL live is not set up for live music, but hey, we are all friends so we gave it a try.   8)

When I listened to it on the podcast, I thought it sounded like we had planned/practiced it.  BUT WE HADN'T.  That was just the real, raw, last 2 verses of "The Free State Project Blues."

I'm thinking Ian and Mark must be masters to have made it fit perfectly into to the closing adds.

THAT WAS FUN!   :)

I can do keyboard, and I've got some chops in the voice department...

most of my keyboarding is freestyle... (kept me alive through college--we're not talking money, here)... my vocal style is probably somewhat more classical, though I haven't done much singing lately and am probably out of shape, somewhat.  :-\

yeah, i'd love to see any and all of you at a show sometime! as far as the cd goes, i'll have to think about it. i feel a little melodramatic saying this, but i've always been pretty hesitant to blend music and politics. it's actually been bothering me for a long time, the question of whether or not i should keep the two separate or blend them together. it's a very difficult question for me. for instance, i've been tempted to say something about the smoking ban at shows...but would that spoil the purity of a good rock show? especially since most of the people in the bars i play are completely FOR the ban? im thinking of incorporating "mind your own business" by hank williams into the set and dedicating it to john lynch.

Hey Jared!
I just left you a little comment on your myspace :)
Long time ago, I decided to not blend music and politics. That's the decision I made a while
back and I am glad I did it. Actually, I love to let the people connect in their own way with their
own interpretation of the lyrics I wrote. It's all up to their imagination... :)

Nice music on your site!!!

I'm taking the opposite approach... I am totally blending music and politics. I may be the first musician to quote Ludwig von Mises!

EXCELLENT!  And it fits/works VERY well within the album concept.  ;D
This CD is definitely going to work.

I've got one more schedule adjustment to make it through, before I can settle down and pull this together.

THANKS Kevin!

p.s.  I have a "working" album title, but we may want to set up a collaborative freedom artists networking web site before saying the name.

Cool Kevin. Although I was watching the visualizer in iTunes while listening and I almost had an epileptic seizure.  ;D

I like the voice... the piece kind of had a taste of NIN to it. The Mises part might have been a little too far down in the mix (at least in my low end headphones)  :)

Thanks for the inspiration, I need to do more of the creative stuff it always helps lift my spirits.

Here are links to some stuff... what can one guy do with GarageBand?
I'm kind of happy with these, but they need to be gone over one more time (at least) before I can live with them.

Cult of the Lawyers (http://www.politicalgraffiti.com/nhfree/music/cult_of_the_lawyers-WORKCOPY.mp3)

First They Brand You (http://www.arafwchnawr.com/music/First_They_Brand_You.mp3)

ICEmen Just Doin' Their Job (http://www.politicalgraffiti.com/nhfree/music/ICEmen-Just_Doin'_Their_Job.mp3)

And the tune that kind of kicked this whole process off
Dada Orwell's Gimmee (http://www.politicalgraffiti.com/nhfree/music/Gimmee_Dada_Orwell-REMIX.mp3)  (my unsolicited REMIX version)

An index of other instrumental stuff that is a little more uplifting. (http://www.arafwchnawr.com/music/)
Some of which has been used in the  Free State Activism DVD. (http://www.soulawakenings.com/underground/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Free_State_Activism_DVD)

These are all GREAT!! They would make great pieces for FTL to use as transition music or for Mark and Ian to play for fun when the topic applies. I can see them using a cut of Dada's "Gimmie Your Money" quite frequently ---

Oddly enough, NIN has been one of my favorite bands for the past 15+ years (although With Teeth was a disappointment and I haven't heard the new album yet).

The middle part is deliberately mixed low. First, I wanted a slightly dramatic effect and to get people to try to figure it out. Second, I'm not sure of the legality of quoting the text as I did. Can you imagine a bunch of frumpy Austrian economists worrying about having to sue a musician?

;D Those darn "frumpy Austrian economists".

Cool, I think the arts are a powerful tool for affecting people. I would love to see more creative stuff... I just know we have a bunch of frustrated artists lurking out there, make something to express yourself, not just music projects.

QuoteWow, lyrics that aren't slurred into obscurity.  I like that.

This is also the direction I'm going.  I have 1 song that's ready to be recorded and I've quoted Ralph William Inge, Thomas Paine and the Declaration of Independence.

Unfortunately I can't record anything because I don't have an electric guitar & amp, bass guitar & amp, a drumset or a drummer.  Plus I have no recording equipment.  So it may be awhile before I can contribute to the disc.

The quote seems reasonably small enough to be fare use.
But two ideas:
1)  We simply footnote the reference in the credits!  (I think that that would be plenty (and quite fare for such a short reference) - but I'm no expert on the issue.)
2)  Email the owner of the intellectual property and ask permission, if that seems appropriate?  (I think this would be unnecessary - but again I'm no expert on the issue.)

I contacted the owners of some intellectual property (one song written by one person, and recorded by another (who told me that a certain great Liberty oriented (501C3) organization "owns the rights to it") that I wanted to use, but . . . Well, it ain't happening - yet.  And that's OK!  Maybe they will be contacting us for inclusion on CD #2?  ;D  (Or #3, etc.)   ;D ;D :o

I just listened to the new Nine Inch Nails album (Year Zero) on the way out to Portland. It's much better than the last one and has some catchy tracks on there. It's practically a concept album as all of the songs are about the descent into an Orwellian society... this crowd should love it!

Now I have an excuse for weak vocals.  ;D  They are weaker than before, but maybe I can fix that to!
Other than that, I expect that my overall health (body/mind & spirit) is much better than I might have expected a year ago - even before my repeated exposures.
I'm taking lots of extra - restorative - rest this winter.
