Any new movers to the 'greater metropolitan Keene area', feel free to tell us, if you would like to be public.
I'm now in this area. I don't quite know how I got an internet connection, but I did. It is very weak though. I had a heck of a time trying to get on. :)
Good idea for this thread.
Welcome to the southwestern corner of The Shire
So, how many free staters (total) do yall have round there?
I moved here to Keene February 9th, 2007.
:D
not sure exactly .... let me see
I would say that about 20 - 30 people have moved to our part of the state.
Can this be a sticky?
Does Peterborough count as "Keene Area"? :icon_pirat:
I consider Monadnock Region the Keene area, so yes, I think.
Then I am here to announce that I moved to the Keene area with my daughter June 1st 2007
Hoping for the rest of the family (wife and 3 more kids...oldest isn't coming) next year, same time.

It's hard to believe that it's almost been an entire year that I've been here.

I don't think so. I have a small hatch back car and what ever I can fit in the car I will take. Naturally this means no furniture or large items. Thanks for the offer though. :)

Awesome. Welcome in advance to what I like to call, the greater Keene metropolitan area. ;D
Suggestion, When you know for sure, post in advance if possible that you will be at social sunday, and there will likely be a larger than normal crowd for a traditional meet n' greet.
If you have wifi on your computer, you can usually find an open signal in many places downtown.

Thanks David. I will know better next week when exactly I will arrive and I should be able to have a firm date in mind.

Alright, I am going to be hitting the road Saturday, Dec 1, in the late morning/afternoon and plan to arrive on Sunday afternoonish. I don't know exactly as it will depend on how long I take a snooze at the mid point and those sorts of details. 16 hour, 1000 mile drive according to Google maps. See you all soon ;D

Have a safe trip. Good to see another Porc on the move.
I have arrived! I would have liked to make it to the Social Sundays but the weather had different designs. I left in a snow storm in Wisconsin and ran into rush hour traffic in Chicago, ice and slush covered roads in Ohio and beyond that it was smooth sailing. Google Maps picked a series of toll roads which took their toll on my wallet but I found the roads to be in good shape, cleared of snow and mostly salted. Driving through Vermont was a treat while the sun was up.
;D
Glad to hear you made it safely. 8)
;D 8)
When I drove up last Feb I found the toll roads to be in much better condition than the others.
Good to hear you made it safely.
Welcome home, JJ! Looking forward to meeting you soon... :)
I plan to move to Keene on April 1st, from Salt Lake City, UT. Will take me 35 hours to drive there. I am bringing a friend to help me move, we are going to drive the whole way without stops, well, other than gas and food of course.
I am very anxious to get out there!
I know its probably a little early, but if there are any free staters that expect to have a room available around that time, let me know. I will be doing the room mate thing until I can find land to buy and build my house.
Anyway, see you all in about 72 days. :)
Cool :)
35 hours? .... could you video yourselves outrunning the cops :)
Hehe, well, not sure I want to engage in a police chase in a lifted 4wheel drive with everything I own in the back. But I do have an HD camera, so if it comes up, I will definitely get on that. ;)

It's in a near downtown 3 bedroom apartment, I and another person (non-liberty activist, but seemed some what interested) currently live there.

I left you a private message about this. I know people new to the forum don't always know about private messages though so I thought I'd post here as well. The messages are really discrete. There's a tiny little number that appears next to your messages in the links up top. If you aren't looking for it, it's very easy to miss. I've gone weeks sometimes not realizing someone left me a message.
Hi Everyone.
I never did learn where everyone was from when I met you at Porcfest '07 or by lurking in the forums. But I have a ride offer to Keene this Jan. 19-21 and would like to meet with others. I'm interested in chatting about areas in NH and low cost properties for my move. I am putting out this request hoping for an offer to be hosted for a couple of nights to talk and meet.

HI all - I just joined the FSP recently and am planning to visit the Keene area in a few weeks to check it out. From what I have heard & read, it sounds like it may be the place for me and my partner. I have been where I am for most of my life so it will be a big step to actually get out of here, but I am certainly looking forward to it. In the past few years here in southeast VA we have gained great things like face-scanning cameras on sidewalks, license-plate photographing at intersections, and city council trying to ban any sort of public gathering in "their" new town center park. We also have the state govt wanting all kinds of ridiculous fees like thousands dollars for "speeding" and new tolls on old highways.

The Keene area folks are hosting a bus of visitors from Porcfest (http://www.freestateproject.org/festival) on Tuesday, June 10. We'll show them around with a tour guide, feed them pancakes, and maybe get them to help with some building project. It will be a good time to visit. Hope to see you soon.

Thanks. The tour sounds interesting - If I can get there by that date, how would I get in on it, and what is the cost? Is this exclusively for Porcfest registrants or anyone in Keene on that date?

The bus is a porcfest attribute. But you could follow the bus once it got to Keene. We have some insiders on the forum that could tell you when and where it will be. New folks are welcome at the events on the calendar. (http://nhunderground.com/forum/index.php?action=calendar)

I would repost this question over on the Free State Project Forum (http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0), but I will go out on a limb and say that I doubt they would turn anyone away from buying a ticket for the tour as long as there's room on the bus for you, and there probably will be. I don't think they'll insist that you get a Porcfest registration. On the other hand, if you're in NH during Porcfest, why the heck wouldn't you want to go? :D

Since I don't know anything about the geography of the city or anyone in it, I probably should get on the bus rather than try to follow it around. But I have no problem paying a reasonable cost for the tour if it will help introduce me to the area. Otherwise I don't have much more than a map and some articles to go by at this point. I'm not sure if me and my partner are registering for the other events/festival so I will just assume not for now. Anyway, if anyone can tell me more about meeting up for the bus tour, it would be helpful. Once we get there and have a chance to look around, we can figure out what is where. If anyone can recommend a decent motel also, thanks!

Small compared to where? I was thinking that Keene was a urban city with a downtown and some amount of sprawl. I wonder if there is an art district there. Is it the kind of city that would have an 'alternative' nightclub? I am vegetarian, would I be able to find good places to eat there? Is there an infoshop or would anyone know what I was asking about.

meaning .... it would not be hard to follow a touring van/bus .... as in if you are in downtown ... you can see all of it at once

Coming from the urban sprawl that is Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida, I consider Keene a small town. It is a remarkably vibrant small town, though -- probably in part because it is a college town.
I am not aware of an actual art district, though downtown Keene does have an artsy feel to it -- again, largely due to college kids' influence. Probably the closest thing to an alternative nightclub would be the Ceilidh House Pub in nearby Westmoreland. I am not a vegetarian, but I get the impression that vegetarian fare -- as well as organic -- is abundant in Keene. It also has a thriving farmer's market, twice weekly.
Kat says that place is good.
The salad place on main is awesome too.
Don't know about "moving" to the area but definitely checking it out. I'll be in the area (from Arizona) on the 7th and would like to meet with some freestaters. Also, if you could direct me to a nearby campground or rv park that would be great. We'll be staying a few days till porcfest but won't be returning on the bus tour as we'll have already completed our personal bus tour. ;)
I've always thought this campground looked nice, but haven't stayed there:

If you're still going to be in Keene on Sunday, there's a picnic in Ashuelot park at noon and then Social Sundays at 4:00 at Vendetta bar. If not, I bet we can arrange a get-together on Saturday.
Hey - I am planning to come up next week as well! I hope to check out all of the places that were recommended and explore the area a bit. Anyone know of any places with cheap weekly rates (non-camp ground)? If I do go ahead with a move sooner than later, will need a place for the short term - presumably a few weeks - until I can find a more permanent arrangement.
-Paul in VA
How long will it take to get to porcfest from there and when will you guys be leaving? Is there a caravan or procession or is everyone going it alone? We're heading due east through NY on the 90 right now!
About 2 hours. Don't know about any caravan, though.
Paul: sorry don't know about places with weekly rates.
Arrived in Keene! The park in Swanzey looks nice but it's further outside of town than I was hoping for and in the wrong direction (it doesn't help that we're getting 6mpg, ugh). Anyone got a spot we can park overnight? No hookups required.

If you can't find a place, the walmart on winchester Street is prolly a safe bet. I have heard they allow RVs to park in their lots. It is right off of 101/ rt 9, go north at the two lane roundabout. Good Luck!
Maulotaur, the Valley Green used to advertise weekly rates of about 200 dollars. it is right off of west street, close to the Hannaford shopping center. Big green building.

Arrived in Keene!
That's great...I also arrived but had a lot of problems with finding a place to stay (no RV). Due to the 'drug abuse awareness conference' going on here at the college in Keene, there are apparently no rooms available in any of the three major motels. Someone actually suggested that we go back to Brattleboro and stay there! I ended up spending the majority of my first day driving around the county until I saw some signs about a christian conference and decided to return to the Main street area for a late dinner at the Thai restaurant (which was really good btw). I also checked out the green disaster...I mean valley motel. They could not seem to decide on a rate to charge me and wanted to negotiate as I was exiting so that did not work out. Anyway, we ended up getting the last vacancy in a very expensive hotel right at the circle. I was told that all rooms are reserved here tomorrow too. So it looks like we will have much less time to check out the city than I had planned. My new plan is to go to Manchester since it is a larger city, and have a better chance of finding reasonable lodging there (?) Then if we can stay a few more days, we're hoping to drive up to the Porcfest on the weekend.
My apologies, you are the first to report on the Green Valley, I was unaware that it was a problem. :o
I hope you have no further problems. In manchvegas, or brattleboro, or elsewhere.

Aloha gang!
I'm flying into Boston next Monday morning.
There were plans in place for a FSP friend of mine to pick me up but something has come up and I need to make adjustments.
If someone is heading towards Keene from the Boston area on that day, maybe we could get together and share the ride and expense.
I am working on renting a car at Logan but I thought it might be fun to catch a ride if the opportunity were there.
I'll be happy to pay for gas, lunch or whatever if anyone's available.
Once in Keene, I'll also be looking for a space to stay until PF.
Nooks, crannies, corners and couches are all cool. I'm relatively quiet, don't eat much and only smell a little bit. ;D
I'll be happy to generously compensate any who care to tolerate my presence for the week.
I'm really looking forward to poking around town and meeting everyone! (looking forward to = can't effing wait!! :P )
I've reserved a spot at Rogers starting on Sunday the 19th.
If I've managed to acquire wheels by then, I will be happy to offer rides there. If not, I might just be needing a ride. We shall see.
Mahalo guys and I'll be seeing you soon!
