I thought gambling was illegal in NH?

QuoteIf New Hampshire legalizes casinos, the taxes they collect from them can alleviate some of the pressure to pass an income tax we've seen lately. Maybe they can fund the public education system off the casino bad-at-math tax instead of stealing $363,000,000 from property owners.

Don't kid yourself.  Any money poured into education from a gambling system will not alleviate the educrats' appetite for money by one dime.  This is an old trick, it played out in Illinois (where the lottery was supposed to fund education.  It did, but educrats decided it should be in addition to money they get from the general fund.)

Usually this is accompanied by a lie claiming the money was misdirected and thus the educrats need more.  (After all, if the money was misdirected, why ask for more?  Why not just ask to NOT have the money misdirected?)  In the case of Illinois educrats perpretrated the bald-faced lie that lottery money was not spent on education.  When confronted with proof to the contrary, they then claim that an equal sum was removed from the general fund (a claim without merit).

If you hear educrats clamoring for a lottery/casinos as a "solution to the education funding crisis", run for the hills!

Is this someone reasonable we can work with
No.
He's pretty in-your-face and not a person around whom consensus is likely to be built. He attributes his virtually safe seat to his cable access TV show (which I must say, is pretty good). He's posted on NHFree once or twice, so he clearly seeks controversy :)

Yup. State-run gambling is bad, bad, bad news!
Indeed, it's the only thing more corrupting than state-run transportation.

There's a difference between state-run and simply specially-taxed casinos, no? I don't want to see them running the things any more than any other government service monopoly.

And I just had another thought about this: Perhaps the taxes on (privately run) casinos could make up for the federal funds the state were to lose if laws like this one were repealed. In general, financial independence from the federal government is going to be necessary before a lot of laws can be finally be done away with—all the highway-related crap comes to mind in addition to that sex-offender law—and something like this might be a means to that end.

I'm not aware of any "state run" casinos.  The ones I've seen were run by private businesses granted local monopolies in exchange for being raped over by the state taxman.

In Illinois, casinos are run by private companies (though so inefficient, annoying and bureaucratic one could easily think they were state-run).  In Wisconsin, they're run by the local Indian tribes (We call 'em "Loservations")

The only downside of getting away from the federal government is that it would be used as an excuse to impose an income tax.

The Hudson Kiwanis club owns a Bingo hall.  It runs 6 nights a week, and during one of the events the prize if you get bingo in under a certain # of balls is over $70,000.  It's been carrying over for a while.
