I've tried to download the KFP draft but never get any document.  It opens Acrobat and grinds for a while with a blank screen, then says "Stopped" on the status bar.  I can download other pdf files with the browser, just not the KFP.

I personally can't stand the Adobe reader plug-in - saving all PDFs to a local drive first cuts down on a large number of annoyances. If you know how to configure your browser to always save PDFs instead of trying to open them within the browser, you might give that a shot. With Firefox, it should be as going under Tools > Options > Downloads > View & Edit Actions, then changing all the PDF items to "save to disk".

I just don't install the plugin. It never works right anyway and makes Firefox crash too much for my liking.

TackleTheWorld

Nixed the plugin.  Still can't download to disk.  Error says:
Adobe Reader
There was an errpr opening this document.  This file cannot be found.

It sounds as though your browser is still trying to use the plugin. Did you go through the file association actions for your browser? (Details for Firefox above.)
