I read the whole article and the above comments seem correct. His main point seemed to be that technology separates us-personal car, TV, internet, headphones- rather than uniting us in the good old-fashioned days of yore.
  I've always wondered if those who long for the good old days know how bad it was back then. Sure, you grew your own food, after months of backbreaking work, hoping that pests or weather wouldn't destroy all you worked for. Sure, the Doc made housecalls with his little black bag, but the list of things he couldn't treat would be quite lengthy.
  Personally, I'm pissed at the SLOW progress of technology, especially in the space and energy fields.
