Re " 'We live in a sea of rabies' " (Monitor, Page B2, Oct. 1):

On Sept. 18 I heard a weird, animal-type sound from my bedroom. I looked out my window and saw a "not normal" looking raccoon in my yard. I ran down the stairs and grabbed a laundry basket. I proceeded out the door and put the basket over the animal. I looked closely at the poor creature, and I could tell that something was obviously wrong.

My girlfriend called the police and after waiting more than 10 minutes trying to hold this evil-looking creature, I was forced to let it go. It chased me into my back hall. The police showed up, and I told them they had taken too long - the animal by then might have been out with a new career and a family.

What I saw was this: The animal's eyes were dripping a reddish liquid, his eyes were cloudy, he had a clear fluid dripping out of his mouth, his fur was rough and mangy looking, and the noises he emitted were that of something from hell. Needless to say, the raccoon is still free, if it's even alive. May have been rabies, maybe not. I tried.

Try a little harder.

I think it was Romak/Richard/VPRE...probally out boozing it up and got lost on the way home.

But yeah, Jim, a weapon would have come in handy. BLAMM! Plunk!

Just one shot would have eliminated 3 posters in this forum.
