The author may just be misunderstanding what "link:" searches actually return. A search for "link:www.example.com" returns sites linking specifically to http://www.example.com/. It does not return sites linking to pages within www.example.com. You need to actually type out a page's whole URL to find sites linking to that specific page. Try it yourself:—

link:www.jraxis.com
link:www.jraxis.com/atheism/simulator

Whereas a search for "www.example.com" returns all sites containing that string, including sites containing more-specific URLs that contain that string.

A Google search for the popular site 911truth.org doesn't even list that site in the results  :dontknow: I don't understand enough about the internets to know if that is deliberate or not.

It comes up as result #4 for me. Specifically, http://www.911truth.org/911rtt/presentation-dvds.html does, with another result indented under it, and a "More results from www.911truth.org" link which brings up 849 results when followed. That they're fourth, however, most likely means someone else is gaming Google's relevance system to get higher results for "911truth".
