The only option I can see is the death penalty.
God bless America!  :-[

FARMINGTON, Mo. - It's a hefty price for a pastry: A man accused of stealing a 52-cent doughnut could face time in jail.

Authorities said Scott A. Masters, 41, slipped the doughnut into his sweat shirt without paying, then pushed away a clerk who tried to stop him as he fled the store.

Must've been a desperately underpaid cop  :D

I don't think you blame the cop - you should blame the judicial system.

Mandatory sentences can be good in one way - bad in another.

For instance, I have no problem with harsh sentences for those that commit crimes with a gun.....because I think that gun crime effects those of us who are responsible gun owners because people want to restrict our right to own/carry a gun. Defend yourself or your property with a gun....but when someone sets out to commit a crime against another individual with that gun and I say punish them to the fullest extent.

On the flip side of that is the example posted in that article where obviously it was not armed robbery and prosecuting as such is utterly ridiculous.

Propensity for pastry... check.

Use of excessive force... check.

I think you're onto something! :P

On a more serious note, this is today's world. Rap sheet on everybody. Divide and conquer. "I don't care if you have to alter the English language, just get out there and bring me a headcount!" It's that word manipulation we need to be seriously moved by. Anybody that doesn't see this word manipulation as traumatice secretly believes that "they" won't one day twist a word and come for them.

All cases should be individually decided.
I hate mandatory sentences. One size does not fit all.
