GOP: No pre-NASCAR vaccines needed
By LISA ZAGAROLI
McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON -- Being around NASCAR fans requires no inoculation.

That was the word Thursday from Republican officials after they learned that a congressional committee's Democratic staffers had advised aides to get vaccinated for hepatitis and other diseases before visiting NASCAR events in Concord, N.C., and Talladega, Ala.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said his committee aides were visiting healthcare centers, detention facilities and other operations where they could be exposed to communicable diseases. He said the immunizations were routine for healthcare workers.

"Democrats should know that there is no preventive measure yet designed to ward off the blue-collar values and patriotism that NASCAR fans represent," said Linda Daves, chairwoman of the North Carolina Republican Party. "If they aren't careful, they just might catch some of it."

Republican Rep. Tim Walberg, whose district includes the Michigan International Speedway, said Democrats must not understand the phrase "rubbin' is racing."

"To suggest that vaccines are needed to attend NASCAR races is insulting to millions of hardworking Americans who love their country and the smell of burnt rubber," he said.

The brouhaha began when the House Committee on Homeland Security decided to study public health preparedness at mass gatherings. They advised aides to get immunized for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus and influenza before going to the UAW-Ford 500 in Talladega last weekend and the Bank of America 500 this weekend in Concord, N.C.

The committee is examining whether the Homeland Security Department is coordinating with state, local and private law-enforcement and healthcare responders to prepare for possible mass emergencies.

Rep. Robin Hayes, the North Carolina Republican whose district includes Lowe's Motor Speedway, complained in a letter to the committee's chairman about staff members feeling the need to get vaccinated before visiting his hometown.

Hayes and Thompson exchanged words in a CNN interview. Thompson told Hayes he "ought to be ashamed" of himself for using an effort to protect workers for a "few minutes of fame." Hayes encouraged people to come to Concord, noting, "We got our shots when we were born."

Unlike a sporting event such as the Super Bowl, which draws about 70,000 people for a few hours, major stock-car races can draw 200,000 to 300,000 fans or more, many of whom camp on-site for several days.

Also, NASCAR is privately owned and directly employs some of the security personnel who are in place on race weekends.

Republicans said the suggestion of vaccines usually recommended for travel to Third World countries showed that the Democrats were out of touch with real Americans.

You have to stay for several days because that's how long it takes to get in and out! :)

Wow, Rep.'s are really grasping for straws, eh Anything to keep their constituents frothing and off their backs I guess.

Perhaps the fans should get immunized as well, almost sounds like the feds may turn nascar into their own petrie dish.

It the Dems who said that politicking at race tracks could be germy....the Reps laughed at it.

Of course you can get colds and stuff more often in crowds --- I've not had one cold since I retired -- but that's normal.

It was the Reps who twisted the incident into a political statement.

Of course the Rep's lauged at it, they have a long standing of disavowing or unbelieving anything that can't be seen with the human eye; unless its some old guy with white hair who sits on some throne up in the clouds  ::)

I honestly do not see how advising people, ( who will be studying health issues)) to get vaccinated is derogatory. Since when is taking precautions a bad thing? I've spent some time in the "Nascar belt" and to make such a suggestion is not wholly unfounded.

The Reps.'s are struggeling on all fronts and they need to distract people from more important issues; thats all I see going on here, just more political maneuvering.

The spineless and ineffective Dems are a totally different can'o'crap.

Or maybe its just a ploy to get morons to actually get vaccinated so they can load their bodies up with mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, and a host of others. Heavy metals in your body is sooooo good for you.

Uh if the shoe fits....wear it, I say! The Democrats are elitists, even though  traditionally viewed as trying to make us think they are the party of the 'poor' people, (perceptions here, but not reality) the party that is empathetic to minorities, the party that is non-discriminatory, and so forth, and this just points out they are not. We call it 'limousine liberals'. 'Do as I say not as I do' types. You know, like John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi? Nancy is always whining about unions, yet she doesn't employ one single union member in her vast multimillion dollar vineyards.

I mean which party's candidates have raised the most money in this presidential cycle, which party had the biggest booths at the fairs, and now which ones suggest people who attend NASCAR might be full of diseases?

Look I've worked at NASCAR many times and never felt the need to get vaccinated beforehand. It's nonsense.

Some people get flu shots, which I don't believe in. But other than that, unless you plan to kiss people you meet at NASCAR, or drink from their cups, what on earth do you need a vaccination for?

This is nonsense. They are simply pointing out what is an accepted truth -- Democrats are often hypocrites when it comes to sticking up for the common person. Of course they love to perpetuate that perception. Everything is perception. Don't fall for it.

Sorry, I'm not getting drawn further into this topic other than stating that both of the parties are equally corrupt and dysfunctional in their own ways.

Dont see any reason to beat a dead horse as we obviously have two different perspectives.
