It's down below the water and takes a living
toll the hot metallic Hell, that the sailors call the Hole.

This is the " old school" light off I mentioned.

I'm guessing that's not a submarine. It looks really roomy and has a huge flat floor instead of a little metal gang plank to walk on.

Pat K

Yeah Dale, last I knew, they were not
starting diesels or Nuclear  reactors with a torch. ;D

I was lucky the "firing alley" on the ship was even wider
and had better lighting.

Sailors sure like to yell a lot.

Yeah hard to imagine, me being so quiet and all.

Pat demonstrated his voluminous vocal power during the fireworks display this weekend.  It's awesome.  I see where he could fit into that environment.

So PatK, what is a MM doing lighting off a boiler? In the five years I was a MM I didn't put one foot in there - them BT's is crazy!

I decided gas turbines was much cleaner and cooler so spent the next five years doing that.

Well Pat the answer to that is=there are no more BT's.
With the whittling down of conventional steam ship,
they consolidated every one into the MM rate.

I was on a gas turbine ship for a day, it was much
cleaner and cooler, also a 15 min check list to light
off sure beats the standard 12 hours to bring the boilers on line.

Yes BT's are crazy. I was once asked by an XO why we were
so crazy and had bad attitudes.

I said well think about this. When people get in trouble one
of their punishments is to be sent to the place WE go to work
everyday.  ;D

Boiler Men =Heaven don't want us and Hell is afraid
we'll take over.
