QuoteQuesada said he wanted to readers find their own meaning in Cap's end.

Here's mine: The authors of the comic are unfortunately falling into the mistaken belief that our government only "went wrong" after September 11.

All that has changed is that so much of the aggression formerly directed outward toward other nations is now being directed inward toward the United States' own citizens, in the form of political oppression and civil liberties violations. Captain America was nice propaganda for the U.S. government fighting the Germans, Japanese, and Communists—but no longer?

America, at least the ones that the founders endowed us with, was dead before the Cap was ever printed for the first time.

Some will say the Republic died after 9/11, others look back to the undeclared wars in Vietnam or Korea, or back to the New Deal, or the War of Northern Aggression, etc. etc.

To those that truly want to figure out where we went wrong, it gets depressing to dig back deeper and deeper into our past and continue to find more and more dirt.

When the Constitution was created is most likely the earliest date you can say it started to go downhill. That was the first power grab by the federal government, justified because the Articles of Confederation government was seen as ineffective in light of Shay's rebellion.
