In Your Head Chain Letter

Someone started a chain letter about the holocaust using my National ID Parlor cartoon along with another cartoon that I haven't seen before. I'm not sure how to feel about it. I hate chain letters and generally disapprove of them. I'm definitely not going to forward it along. On the other hand, maybe people will hear about my website. Then again, maybe they'll have a bad taste about my website from hearing about it in a chain letter. ...sigh.

David

Prolly not a good thing.  Chain letters are illegal due to occasional fraud.  And of course it is a federal issue, because it is done through the post office.  I would disavow the letter, particularly if they are asking for money.  Just my .02.

Kat Kanning

Guessing that Dale was talking about an email chain letter.

Umm, I think he means chain e-mail letter.

you can let people know that you didn't start this chain ... I don't think you can do much about it right now

Ya, I'd post a nice big disclaimer on the front page for a month or 2. And if there's anything really inflammatory or incorrect in the letter, I'd let the people at Snopes know what's up (You'll probably get plenty of traffic from their site as well - good side benefit). That way, you can generate more traffic, and show an effort to distance yourself from any fanatical cause.

Here's a quick cut and paste of it. It's talking about the holocaust, which is fine. The only thing offensive about it is the chain part, IMHO. The second part is a direct copy of my post along with the cartoon. Both cartoons are actually attachment; not links.

IN MEMORIAM - 60  YEARS LATER
Please read the little cartoon carefully, it's powerful. Then read the  comments at the end. I'm doing my small part by forwarding this message. I  hope you'll consider doing the same.

                      In Memoriam

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended. This e-mail is  being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million  Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered,  massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian  Peoples looking the other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran  , among others, claiming the Holocaust to be "a myth," it is  imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who  would like to do it again.

This week, the  UK  removed the Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Muslim population because they say it never occurred.

This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easy each country is giving into it.

This e-mail is intended to reach 40 million people worldwide!

Join us and be a link in the memorial chain and help us distribute it around  the world.

Please send this e-mail to 10 people you know and ask them to continue the  memorial chain.

Please don't just delete it. It will only take you a minute to pass this  along - Thanks!

What the Germans did not see coming in 1930 Germany,  Americans do not see coming in 2007.  Americans have the duty to question all anti Constitutional laws!  Call your Congressman about the Patriot Act, Real ID, H.B. 1955 (S.B. 1959)etc.       http://anarchyinyourhead.com/2008/01/14/national-id-parlor/

States will have five more years to implement a National ID according to this article. I can't help but be skeptical of how serious a security issue it can really be if we can afford to wait five more years.

There are two Easter eggs in today's cartoon. Roll over the image to find them.

Oh ok, I jumped the gun and made the assumption it was being used in a piece of Holocaust denial propaganda. This has a good positive message to it, is helpful to you, and there's really nothing you can do about people forwarding it. Since there's another comic attached, it's obvious you had no part in compiling it. Feel flattered you're being shown on par with one of the most popular comic strips in america :-P

Kinda makes you want to believe in intellectual property, doesn't it... when you discover someone gratuitously misappropriating yours :)

Caleb

That's the great thing about being a pacifist! You get to believe in things again. I just don't believe in using force for any reason, so there's not much I can do to stop things from happening, but I can finally believe in them again.

I believe in intellectual property rights! Whew. That felt good. I believe in intellectual property rights! Wow! Still feels good.

I believe in intellectual property rights.

Wow! It even feels good in 20pt font in lime green color.

The libertarian can't enjoy this feeling, because if he says that he believes in intellectual property rights, then he has to justify using force when someone violates them, and that's not a molehill he wants to climb.

Caleb

I would just enjoy the fame, dale. No one is going to think you wrote the chain mail.

Not so fast, Caleb!  I am not a pacifist (though I had started to cross over, then subsequently retreated); I do recognize intellectual property rights, but I do not hold that they must be, or even ought to be violently enforced.

I do believe in physical self-defense, if necessary, as a last resort.  Violent action taken after the threat has passed, such as employing violence to force restitution, is something I do not agree with.

No, I don't believe in any such thing as misappropriation when it comes to "intellectual property". Misrepresentation, however, might bother me. That could be a case of fraud, whereby someone does harm to me with lies. I wouldn't feel justified using force even then. I would just try to repair the damage using the truth. This doesn't seem to be a case of that at all though. Whoever made this, quoted me verbatim. And like Caleb said, it was mixed with another post by another cartoonist so few people should think I started the chain mail. I have no problem with it.

Yup.  I like Non Sequitor.  Great strip.  I saw that particular version when it was originally published.   8)
