I don't think he's compromising.  It strikes me that he votes what he actually thinks.  Why compromise on one issue?  Seems like he's taking a strict constitutionalist route, and that might conflict with libertarianism sometimes.
Someone can abide by the US Constitution, but seek its amendment on clauses that are socially/economically restictive.
His main problem is with the Federal Reserve System, which was considered unconstitutional by at least a few of the Founding Fathers from the southern agricultural States. Oddly enough the US Constitution was in and of itself illegal.
It swept aside the Articles of Confederation mostly to the benefit of those southern agricultural States.
