Her birthday is coming up, and her aunties and Nana can chip in also. I don't want one that has a crappy battery system(this always seems to be a downside, I guess) and not too complicated in order that uploads are too time-consuming.

The one I have (Canon FS100) has a ridiculously long-lasting battery.  It's also relatively small.

One downside of it is it has an automatic lens cover.  You might think would be good, but mine is now stuck in the "open" position.

Another downside is that the only way I found to be able to upload my vids to YouTube was by buying Pinnacle Studio ($50).  It's a nice, straightforward piece of software, but it's not as simple as some of the cameras where you can supposedly just offload them straight to YouTube.

I've heard good things about the Flip Video Cam -- it's very small, and has decent quality (Christina Heller really likes it).  I don't know about the battery life though.  I know some of them use standard AA or AAA batteries so you could always just have some of those on hand.  I also don't know anything about the ease of doing uploads from it.

I got an FS100 too, I like it a lot.  It's pretty simple to use and I've not had any problems battery wise in the least.  I didn't know about the lenscap staying open so thanks for that Will.

here is my post from a while back:

I just bought myself a FS-100 by Canon

It's small, has a flip out window with the ability to turn it 180 so you can see yourself in the window.  It has settings for different lighting and is pretty easy to use even for a novice such as myself.  I like the weight. . .it's a flash memory one. . . takes a SDHC card which seems to go quite a ways. . . I took a bunch of pictures last weekend up in the White Mountains

4 settings, even I can figure it out. . . one for pictures, one for video, one for video review, one for picture review.  Zoom on top, as well as the shutter for the camera.

so it's small. . . I like its size. . . . and it takes great pictures and video

all of that. . . a case with extra battery, a SDHC card, and the camera (comes with strap, battery, remote control-cool)

$525.  I love it.

>I've seen these for less than $350 now, go figure.

It could be that I was routinely using it for hours on end in sub-freezing weather.  It often got stuck "part way" (you can see that in many of my later videos as a dark fuzzy band on the bottom for a few clips before I realized it), before finally sticking (apparently permanently) in the open position near the end.

Hey Will!   :hello:

I actual think I read your review over at Amazon! Malena and I pored over hundreds of reviews over at Amazon, and we read a few things about the Canon that made me shy away from it. The flip camera's seem to suck after 3 months, I was considering.. So we ended up with a JVC. I don't have a MAC, and it seemed like a lot of the bad reviews stemmed from that?(I forget now) Oh, I think it was the low lighting complaint.. if the jvc is disappointing, then I'll switch to the fs100. Thanks so much!

:thanks:

I bought it mostly for interactions with bureaucrats.  .  . it's fun to take pictures with but I'm dying for a good digital slr. . . I think I might use 1/3 of my refund to get one.  A lot of people have been telling me to get into photography and I always liked it.

I've always bought Canon products and never had much of a problem, but they are quite expensive.
