Ex-officer files complaint against Big Sandy police

Former Big Sandy police officer Barry Cooper, now with KopBusters.com and NeverGetBusted.com has filed a complaint about the Big Sandy Police Department with the Upshur County District Attorney's Office.

Cooper also said that he will announce his candidacy for Texas Attorney General on Monday.

"It is our hope that Big Sandy does not become the 'poster child' for what we plan to do to wayward public officials," Cooper said. "But we will employ any and all tools we can find to demand accountability."

In his complaint, Cooper alleges that the Big Sandy Police Department failed to comply with open records laws.

He said that he faxed an open records request to Big Sandy City Hall on Jan. 28, and that there has been "no written, verbal, electronic response to the request as required by the 10-day provision in state law. Furthermore, no response has been given handing over documents requested from the City of Big Sandy (i.e., the Big Sandy Police Department)."

The complaint was signed by Cooper and Joey Dauben, both representing KopBusters.com.

In his complaint, Cooper states that the original Open Records Request was faxed on Jan. 29, and the City of Big Sandy confirmed receipt on Feb. 2. He said that the city secretary said that it was then sent to the Big Sandy Police Department.

In his request, Cooper asks for a copy of a video tape, audio recording or other audio/visual recording of a Big Sandy Police Department officer in an incident at a Big Sandy park involving Cooper and his wife Candi in 2008.

He said that the incident involved a Big Sandy officer threatening to shoot Cooper and his wife, "which subsequently resulted in an ambulance being called."

Cooper also requested copies of documents relating to an incident at a gas station in which an unknown officer "picked a fight with Barry Cooper by refusing to shake his hand and commenting that Barry was diseased and shouldn't be touched."

He also asked for records relating to a traffic stop involving Cooper and his wife.

Cooper also wanted results of the Big Sandy police chief's investigation into these matters.

He also requested salary information for the department.

I'll pass through Big Sandy in a few weeks when we go to the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler.

I'll let you know if I see any campaign signs.  ;)
