And don't forget--It's "the marketplace of ideas"!  So YOU didn't supply enough incentive for them to do what they said they would do.  And your complaining about it is just you being petty and disruptive . . .

I may be petty and disruptive in your opinion.   Most people would consider this thread petty and disruptive.
The fact remains that if someone treats me or someone else poorly I don't have to deal like them just because they claim to be pro liberty.

I have lived in this community for over two years now.  I have seen the good, the bad and the down right ugly treatment of other people and a complete lack of respect for others individuals liberty.  The majority of people I know here are wonderful, caring, responsible individuals who I treasure.  I have a large pool of wonderful friends here in NH.

There are a small group that seems to be growing that either forget or ignore that personal responsibility goes hand in hand with liberty.   I do strongly feel everyone is free to live the life they choose.   They also have to live with the consequences of there choices.   I am also free not to have people in my life who I regard as reckless, self destructive, irresponsible, and deadbeats.  The worst are those who are disrespectful of others property and claim they can do so because they shouldn't have there right to liberty impeded.  Your right to liberty does not supersede my liberty on my private property.  These types of people are disliked by so many Porcupines they most often move out of the state.  I get tired of them creeping in and causing damage to community and the cause of liberty here in NH.  They waste precious time and resources.  These are the people I avoid.

I will not contact with people I have not had a chance to get to know or references don't come back favorably.  I have avoided lots of trouble this way.  Many call me a bitch because there are somethings I will not put up with and I am good with that.

I thought with all those italics, no one could possibly mistake the tone I was writing in for anything other than the intended sarcasm.  I was agreeing with you!
The major problem in this movement right now, imho, is the way people will behave in all manner of negative ways, and then try to excuse themselves on ideological grounds.  I keep hearing the above-cited "marketplace of ideas" dodge, and it just makes me lose respect for the person resorting to it, and gets me wondering why I even bother . . .
My least favorite excuse--I'm sure you've heard it, too--finally wore such a blister into my brain that I had to write a song to salve it:

JUST LIKE THAT
COPYRIGHT F 2010 by Sam A. Robrin or whoever the hell it is who writes these things. Go ahead and use it, but if you make a little money on it, I want some!

Free Staters use
A certain phrase
   With overrehearsed facility
To help excuse
What's really laz-
   Y irresponsibility.

It often seems there's no escaping
   Folks who act like flibberti-
Gibbets when it comes to shaping
   Plans to foster liberty.

"There's just no organizing
   Individualists," they sneer--
Which view would be surprising
   To most business owners here.

If we can feed and clothe and house and
   Shield folks from the weather,
Seems the hoped-for twenty thousand
Could work out a plan together.

Displaying fierce activity
   Might help improve the stats.
But *Titter titter* *Tee-hee-hee*
   It's just like herding cats!

"They're putting us on trial.
   Come by at 6 tonight.
Let's start planning while
There's time to get it right."

But A had tickets to a game,
   And B was buying pot;
C said legal ploys were lame,
   And whoops, D just forgot.

E and F play cards that day,
And G goes to a bar.
H said we're done for anyway.
   (With that approach, we are.)

Chances are, we'd win if we
   Got organized, but that's
*Titter titter* *Tee-hee-hee*
   Just like herding cats!

                                    MORE . . .
In making their persuasive points, Free Staters invest ample
Reliance on a singular historical example:
Turn back to 1955, a bus ride in Montgomery,
Where great ends were achieved without apologetic flummery.

"Rosa Parks has gone to jail."
"She sat to take a stand!"
"You know what such events entail."
   "A bus boycott is planned."

"Get callers on the wires!"
   "We have just three days."
"Print fifty thousand flyers."
   "Plot distribution ways."

"It's time to speak out for our rights."
   "Ask drivers to form pools."
"Map and point out pickup sites
For rides to jobs and schools."

They toppled the hegemony
   Of racist Dixiecrats.
It wasn't *Titter* *Tee-hee-hee*
   "Just like herding cats."

Humor has its uses,
But be careful how you ply it--
If it props up weak excuses,
   Then you're endangered by it.

(And, come to think of it,  I showed this song to someone who, even with all the transliterated laughter, didn't recognize that ... I was being sarcastic!  Maybe I should forget this writing nonsense, and just take up knitting . . .)

porcupine kate

Thank you for agreeing with me.
Sorry I missed the Sarcasm.  :-[

I do like the song.
We need more doers and less Philosophers.

If you take up knitting I'm looking for nice warm sweaters with no wool in them. ;)

MaineShark

I don't think it's a lack of doers.

It's a surplus of un-doers.

The old business axiom of three and eleven applies... if you make a customer happy, he'll tell three others, on average.  If you piss off a customer, he'll tell eleven others, on average.

Someone out there lying, cheating, or stealing is undoing things four times faster than someone doing good work.

Well, as long as we're kvetching, I also came up with this one:

THE FREE STATE PROJECT LIST  ("I've Got a Little List" from The Mikado)

COPYRIGHT JA 2010 by Sam A. Robrin or whoever the hell it is who writes these things. Go ahead and use it (hey,I lifted the melody), but if you make a little money on it, I want some!

If the Free State Project gets too big, and that concern needs fixing,
I've got a little list;  I've got a little list
Of people I could nominate for early eighty-sixing,
It's not like they'd be missed; they never would be missed.
There's the non-participant who "knows" why everything is wrong.
The lyricist who thinks we want to hear his latest song.
420 folks who can't make meetings, being high on drugs.
Idealists approaching crooked cops to offer hugs.
The guy who won't leave tips (out of revenge for being brissed?)
Could dissipate like mist,  And never would be missed.

I'm making quite a list; An ever-growing list
Of who would not be missed.  Are there some names I've missed?

The dolt who isn't where he said he'd be, and doesn't call.
And every "mutualist"—Is squatting on my list.
There's the sports fan who usurps each meeting talking basketball.
It's not like they'll be missed;  They never will be missed.
The prig offended by your activism asking, "Why do
You destroy the movement doing things unlike the way that I do?"
Politicos campaigning who declaim how we've incensed them,
And if we don't all bloc-vote for their issue, we're against them.
The net nut who sends films about bizarre acts with a fist--
These clods I've booed and hissed--They never will be missed.

I've gathered quite a list;  It's one extensive list
Of folks who won't be missed.  Not one would much be missed.

The PorcFest drunks who stagger up and vomit on your tent.
"Anarcho-socialist"?  Put that guy on the list!
And new movers still unclear on concepts such as "work" and "rent"--
They really get me pissed--Their names go on the list!
Names like--  Well, I mostly know them by their FreeKeene Forum handles.
I'd get on lists myself now if I started any scandals.
Besides, the KPD might ask, and you know what they're planning.
As far as they're concerned, I guess we're all named Russell Kanning.
We're self-motivated here--I'm sure you, too, have got your list
Of who would not be missed.  You know who won't be missed.

That's quite a little list; A great big little list!
Of who would not be missed; Take aim, they won't be missed.

ENCORE VERSES:

Those racist, foul-mouthed FTL and FreeKeene forum trolls--
All right, we get the gist! I've put them on the list.
Religious types who hope eventually to save our souls:
So gently Judas-kissed--Unlikely to be missed.
The quislings who'll insist the million minions of the State
Will give us all we ask for if we'll just cooperate,
And the lout who thinks inaction makes him holier than thou;
We need a dozen like him—not the hundreds we have now!
Buffoons who only screw up in their ardor to assist.
They never would be missed; Let's see if they'd be missed.

A lengthy little list; An ever-growing list
Of folks who won't be missed.  They never would be missed.

There's that nebbish neocon recruiting for the GOP.
The birth conspiracist--You'll find him on the list.
The Randian who hangs on every word of Leonard P.
Who of them would be missed?  Would one of them be missed?
The philanthropic chauffeur who provides abundant seating,
Then sails past exits, gets you lost, and makes you miss the meeting.
The satirist deriving schadenfreude and high hilarity
From skewering his friends and colleagues in some so-called "parody";
I-- Um, He makes the list!  (Oh, how could I resist?)
He never will be missed.  Throw bricks, he won't be missed!

That's not the only list.  I'll bet you have a list
Of folks who won't be missed.  We know who won't be missed.

That seems excessively pessimistic and indicative of a belief that the evil is more powerful than the good. At worst, they're evenly matched.

It's not that "evil is more powerful than good."  It's actually quite the opposite.  Most folks at least try to be decent, so when they are cheated or stolen from, they feel a strong duty to warn others.  If you buy tires, and the store treats your right, then when your friend mentions needing tires, you'll likely tell him about your good experience.  However, if the store cheated your and damaged your car, you'd likely go out of your way to warn others to avoid that tire store.

And the usual ratio that is used for that is three referrals for every good act to eleven complains for every bad act.  It may vary a bit from market-segment to market-segment, but it's fairly consistent as an average.  And I don't think there are any markets where the ratio even approaches parity.

It's not evil.  Just natural desire to warn others.  That's why it's important to do good, but critical to avoid doing evil.

AidaB, Lauren, and I have been discussing assembling some sort of music event, so do be in touch about that.  I still want to make professional-sounding recordings and rehearse crowd songs for spontaneous demonstrations.   The problem so far is related to what's been discussed already: expression of interest but lack of follow-through.

Undead thread has been resurrected!

In all seriousness, though, I just poisoned my well last month.  Dumped one heck of a lot of concentrated chlorine pellets into it.  That killed off a lot of the iron bacteria, thus dramatically improving the water quality, once the well was flushed out.

Those of us who actually know wells, know that wells need to be periodically poisoned to maintain their health and remove contaminants.
